Brand-new prime-time MSNBC star Rachel Maddow told the San Francisco Chronicle last week that while Republicans wanted gay people steam-rollered "out of the country," she thought the Democrats were worthless and weak. "I don’t think the Democrats have ever fought the culture war."
Chronicle media writer Joe Garofoli interviewed Maddow for a podcast from the Republican convention in St. Paul last Thursday. Maddow said Sarah Palin’s Wednesday night speech seemed drawn from Pat Buchanan’s 1992 address in Houston. Garofoli nudged the self-described lesbian into repeating her line "I was 19 and I felt my country was declaring war on me."
When asked the difference in the cultural battles between then and now, she replied: "At the time, I think the ascendant right wing was really looking to change America by steamrolling out of the country people they felt like were anathema to their idea of American values. Now I think there is a more self-conscious idea that they’re saying they want to do that, so as to create a divide in the electorate they can exploit for political gain."
When the subject turned to the Democrats, she pounced:
I don’t think the Democrats have ever fought the culture war....Whether it was 2004, with the anti-gay-marriage initiatives, whether it was 1992, with the rhetoric and the aggression we saw there, whether it was standing up for abortion rights, the Democratic Party has been sort of an ally, a here-and-there ally to progressive causes. But they havent led the charge. I mean, when have the Democrat led on cultural issues? Right now, the Democratic nominee for president, Barack Obama’s against same-sex marriage.
Garofoli changed her tone slightly when he suggested "He and McCain have very similar positions." She protested that:
McCain’s, honestly, is much worse. McCain says that he thinks that gay people should be allowed to enter into legal arrangements, legal arrangements that reflect their relationship status. McCain’s is essentially saying that he believes gay people should not be excluded from American contract law? Well, thanks! We didn’t know that was an option, that you might want to exclude us from that. Really? That’s your big, that’s your big olive branch? That, you think that, what, we should be able to drive and own pets, too? Obama and Democrats have generally been nicer about it, but they haven’t been leaders. They haven’t even been leaders of the defense. They’ve just been trying to stay out of it. And I still see them doing that this year.
Later on, she claimed there were no sexist questions being asked of Sarah Palin – apparently, none of them had anything to do with her pregnant daughter Bristol or whether she could be vice-president and raise her son with Down syndrome. In a nod to her radical-left Air America base, Maddow also fretted about the "militarization" of big-city police massed against protesters since the riots in Seattle at the end of 1999.

September 10, 2008 - 22:30 ET by rammingspeedThe Democratic party goes only so far in support of "progressive" ideas because they know they'd lose every election by a landslide. They can barely win when an election is handed to them, as it is.
So-called progressives are extremists. They alienate more than they draw in. Call Hannity and Limbaugh extremists if you will, but they draw in multiple millions every day, while progressive pushers are mostly ignored.
The public makes choices based on what makes sense.
WE were Playing Defense
September 10, 2008 - 22:32 ET by exLibIt's the right who was playing Defense in the Culture War.
GW Bush's claim to fame is that he took the fight TO the dirty rats, and they came back biting, kick, scratching, low blows, you name it.
As far as I know, nobody saw Roe V Wade coming, or Prayer thrown out of school or the Bible Thrown out of school. It was all done in the dark of night, under cover.
Why does the left hate Bush so much? He brought the fight out into the light, he exposed it for what it was.
The militant homosexual left had the country right where it wanted them, ready to give up everything and then....
Along came Rove and Bush and brought the issues to the people and all across the country people voted it down. Even in Massachusetts We voted it down.. I mean we weren't allowed to vote it down because idiots voted in a Democrat Governor with an already all Democrat Congress and the Party of Personal Freedom said we can't let the people vote on this issues.
Not to mention the law breaker mayor in San Francisico who thinks he's above the law and the "god" of all that's right.
What a Joke.
What the hell is she talking about...?
September 10, 2008 - 22:40 ET by superconWhy do lefties always talk as if they are one step from being rounded up for an internment camp?

Oh gosh...I wish we could do that.My list would be huge.I would start with the leadership of the DNC.But seriously. What is she talking about? She makes it seem like there were gangs of roving Republicans chasing her down the street and hurling insults on the orders of Newt Gingrich and Jerry Falwell. It never happened.Gay people have more protection than a bald eagle.
Why must lefties always exaggerate the pain that they have had to endure at the hands of evil right-wingers? I'm not kidding. All ever they do is complain how someone is always keeping them down or shredding the constitution or stepping on their rights. It gets tiresome.
They're a whiny bunch.

Culture war
September 10, 2008 - 22:46 ET by cocodrieThe left-wing extremists have declared war on normal America. They are busy redefining the english language and destroying morality. I have worked for many homosexual decorators that describe themselves as gay, but they are the most unhappy and petty people I have ever met. Also on their agenda is the redefinition of marriage to include two persons of the same sex, maybe even a person to a pig with lipstick. This is only the beginning. To the democrat whackos four letter words include Christians, conservatives, pro-life, guns, truth; the list goes on and on. The radical kooks have declared war on us and it is a war of personal destruction.
Dems invented the culture war
September 10, 2008 - 23:33 ET by JerryDems never fought the culture war???? The Dems invented the culture war. It's how they get votes. Isolate a group and convince them that conservatives hate them, but if they'll just vote democrat, they'll be taken care of. Gays, blacks, hispanics, women, youths, welfare receipients, etc.
When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).
Agitate, Agitate,
September 11, 2008 - 00:51 ET by mastersofdeceitAgitate, Agitate, Agitate
Not sure all the blame can be placed on Dems, but I'll get to that in a moment.
But your post makes a good point about the invention of the culture war. From Stonewall to targeting corporations and institutions like the Boy Scouts or even Disneyland and anyone else down the food chain; it was agitate, agitate non stop. Go all the way up through the courts, put people in office for the cause (that would be the Dems you speak of) until every "right" possible and accomadation can be given.
Push everything possible and then demand that one last thing that eludes them, marriage. And then guess what? Yet again another play out of the commie/street agitator playbook. Turn around and say "Aww look how mean this "right wing" or republican people are being to us" or "We didn't start this, they did." Of course the "culture war" is what going on 40 years so they are counting on no one remembering things and the brainwashing of the new generations.
And guess what all this agitation from fools like this guy maddow and their inky ilk has brought us to? Here, I will give you some recent, and I mean like last 72 hours recent, examples.
ONE
TWO (note the street agitator language "no prayer, no work", could you imagine 250 Christians chanting this outside their job?)
THREE

You get the idea. If you want to send a thank you card you know where to send it. Maybe MSDNC can hire Michael Savage back to you know provide some balance.
Let us Prey...er, Pray
September 11, 2008 - 01:20 ET by Kimberly#2 is most telling (an article about 250 Muslim workers seeking additional break time for prayers during Ramadan from their company, JBS Swift & Co.). I would imagine Christians have no problem praying at their jobs every day, because most of them have learned to, you know, just pray to God instead of rolling out prayer rugs, facing Mecca, loud chanting and gesticulations, etc. Even Catholics know how to make the Sign of the Cross quickly, send silent prayers upward, one more SotC, and move on.
But since it's the Muslims who want special accommodations, they just expect everybody to roll over and cave to their demands, just like their left-leaning friends in the media, the courts, and Democrat-controlled legislatures always do. Somebody should remind these 250 walkouts that this is a private business, which means that they can make their own work rules as long as they stay within state and Federal laws. In most states, there is no "right to work" and as such, if you refuse to do your job for any reason, your employer can fire you. Your employer would be fully within his/her right to say, "You want extra break time for prayers during Ramadan and you won't be doing your job at that time and you won't make up the time lost? Fine. Take all the time you want because you're fired -- now, go pray about that."
Yep. I walk around praying
September 11, 2008 - 02:34 ET by mastersofdeceitYep. I walk around praying all day privately in my head. : )
Maddow
September 10, 2008 - 23:45 ET by KC MulvilleOnce again, one wonders why MSNBC went looking for a show with better ratings, turned to ... Air America? You know things are bad when you look to Air America to improve your ratings.
Speaking about coercion ... the vast majority of Americans have said, repeatedly, that we don't want gay marriage. Maddow's reply to the fact that majority rule is ruling against the idea of gay marriage is to complain that the Republicans are trying to "divide the electorate." She's angry at the majority for being the majority.
Gay marriage advocates are prime examples of cognitive dissonance. The reason they want gay marriages to be recognized is so their relationships can have the benefits of social approval. But society doesn't approve of them. So, those in favor of gay marriage want to legally force society to approve of their relationships. That's how they'll get social approval.
MSNBC ... where logic is on holiday ...
What is a Rachel Maddow really?
September 11, 2008 - 00:10 ET by Lame CherryI really didn't grasp Maddow's analogy of the GOP using a steamroller on sodomites to get them out of the country in her observation.
The reason being, a steamroller is meant to crush things on the spot and are not a transporation device.
and as one might notice, a steam roller does not float, so would Maddow have gays holding their breath under the ocean as they made the long voyage under the sea.
or was Maddow on a north south axis in meaning the GOP was going to export homosexuals to Canada and Mexico.
Unlike most people like Maddow not speaking for entire groups or acting like I know what entire groups are up to, I do know this Conservative wants a better outcome from gay people than defining their entire lives by a sex action. That is as ludicrous as defining yourself by if you eat chips with salsa or plain.
Gay people are suffering from a great deal of trauma and the worst of it is the left politicizing them and telling them to go kill themselves by acting out.
That is not a very caring thing to tell anyone to go and do no more than telling a child to play in the street knowing how dangerous it is.
I would have liked Maddow to explore Barack Obama's bisexual nature as Chicago gay dictates if one's wife will not perform certain oral acts a male goes out and finds Lawrence Sinclair to service him.
Now that is a relevant subject instead of keyholing the GOP into an idiot analogy which instead should have had a ship as ship them out or steamroller burying the opposing view that killing oneself by sex is not a good thing.
As for Democrats, never fighting the culture war, there was never a culture war. There was a morality war of dolts contending it was ok to treat women as lipstick on pigs, euthenizing sick people and old people and Bill Maher all lathered up by the images of it all attempting to overthrow the common good of preserving life and finding a better way for people to deal with all the problems all people must overcome in not acting out in their weaknesses.
