We're Not In Recession? ABC Finds It Hard to Swallow

Photo of Tim Graham.

Facts are stubborn things, but not as stubborn as ABC in describing our current economy as in "recession." The day before the government revised second quarter economic growth up to 3.3 percent, Good Morning America's food segment on Wednesday morning carried the graphic "Recession Recipes" as co-host Robin Roberts and weatherman Sam Champion chewed on chuck with chef Sara Moulton. (The R word was never used by the noshing news staff, just on screen.)

Scott Whitlock noted ABC's insistent "Recession Rescue" coverage earlier in our non-recession.

There's nothing like a good

hearty beef stew made with chuck!  Welcome to the real world, Robin...you don't have to make such an ugly face about it ;-)

But why does it FEEL so bad?

Because the media and liberals want The Narrative to be that the economy is falling apart.

The economy is one huge poker game, in which people gamble according to what they think the other guy is going to do. But when everyone is afraid, no one puts any money into the pot. They fold, even when they're holding good hands. The Democrats are telling you about Big Oil, Big Medical, Big Insurance, because they're trying to tell you that the other players are all holding four aces, so you might as well fold, you don't have a chance.

The economy does have problems. But the trick to running a market economy is to trust the market. The market rewards wise risks, but punishes imprudent ones. The banks and mortgage industry played poorly and recklessly; now they're paying the penalty for it. Good. They should. And the people who put their money in schemes too good to be true (0% rates!) now pay the penalty. Punishment is part of the game.

The Democrats tell us that the market is rigged against you. Like children, they complain that any punishment is UNFAIR!  Time to grow up, Left.

and - oops - the 2Q growth

was higher than expected?!?!  No No No You won't hear a word about those figures!!!  It's "R" time, whether we like it or not!

Perfect

Perfect screen capture.  Very nice work.

So, because they came up

So, because they came up with budget recipes, that means we're in a recession? This is worse than their anecdotal "evidence" of their interviews with some down and out people that's somehow supposed to prove we're in "hard times". It must kill them that it's still technically incorrect to use the "R word".

McNotObama '08

Well they should be

Well they should be choking.  The country as a whole is not that shabby EXCEPT for CALIFORNIA (1.4 mil unemployed) who loves all those illegal aliens (sanctuary city movement) so now they have 23.3% unemployment in El Centro lumped on top of the tax and spend policies they are so fond of.  Way to go liberals, shall we bring back the misery index?  The other notable exceptions would be Michigan, shock another Blue state, with high unemployment (461,000), high taxation, unionization and failing schools.   Finally, let's not forget Illinois another Blue state with high unemployment (507,000), unionization and high taxation.  That's over 2.3 million people unemployed out of 8.7 million nationally.

Libs must be proud of their accomplishments and now if they just can keep that drilling ban in place they may be able to prop up the price of oil even further, one more push should put the economy in a real recession.  Ya think the price of gas going from 2 to 4 dollars a gallon might have something to do with it?  Nancy Pelosi's 2006 broken promises????  Didn't she and the Democrats PROMISE to bring DOWN the price of gas??  Tell us Nancy, how is $4/gallon cheaper than $2/gallon, it must be that liberal math...

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, starving the poor one gallon of ethanol at a time. Fill your tank with E85 and cull a village.

scott, you are right on

scott, you are right on the money.  These numbers are shocking and the liberal media are doing their darndest to blame it on Bush.  It shows that they are more than just partisan, they are campaigners for the liberal ideology, New York politics from New York news organizations.

Republicans are nearly equally to blame in Michigan and California.  Here in California the Republicans seem to have lost all fire in their bellies.  The governator has turned into a big liberal which is not worth protecting or defending.  They should be out touting these numbers until they finally sink in.  Liberalism doesn't work.  It can sound good on paper but in the real world it fails every time!

I Ran The Numbers

I just ran the numbers.  Michigan, Illinois, and California account for 20% of the nation's population and 26% of the nation's unemployment.

I have always wondered how

you can "sleep with the enemy" - I guess the Kennedy outlook has finally rubbed off on the big tough guy after all!  Too bad, I was hoping he had enough testosterone to ward it off.

MSM Econ 101

Democtratic President and 6% unemployment = fantastic job creation based on strong economy and high tech miracle environment boistered by centralized government incentives and enlightened public sector/private sector coordination.

Republican President and 5% unemployment = hamburger flipper economy with the vast majority of middle class America living paycheck-to-paycheck meager existences.

you're not accounting for the time lag

All this recession talk and stupid 'how to' shows for the down and out are merely a little ahead of real time. Once our saviour The Obamesiah is elected all this will be very useful and accurate.

Au contraire,

Au contraire, mon cherie!

(I'm practicing my French...you know why.)

When Obama is elected we may have 8% unemployment, but the economy will be fantastic and people will have meaningful careers, instead of hum-drum paycheck-to-paycheck existenses.

Recession chile?  Try milk and honey and mana from heaven, (ie, the Federal Government).

Economic hardships?  Temporary obstacles put in place by the Cheny/Bush administration.

What is all this fuss about facts?!?

Here are the only facts that count: George W Bush is President, and Cheney is Vice President.

For a liberal that is the causes of a [personal] depression.

They cannot say, without revealing their psychosis, that we are in a depression; but they can project their frame of mind somewhat by saying that we are in a recession by fudging the truth just a little bit, which for a liberal is no problem at all.

Impunitas semper ad deteriora invitat.

Robin the "Recession" Monger

She DID say "recession" in her tease to the segment, as they went to commercial break.

Hey Robin! Why let the facts get in the way of a good story.  Just go and ruin whatever credibility you've ever had!  Sam too!
