WaPo Whacks Corsi, Reports Swift-Vet Book ‘Also Widely Disproved’

On the front page of Thursday's Washington Post, reporter Eli Saslow took on the new anti-Obama books in a story headlined "New Books Aim to Unweave the Obama Narrative." For his part, Saslow writes as if it's his job to simply present the Obama narrative on the front page of the Post as news, like his gooey piece lamenting how Obama's radical black church was feeling "marginalized and vilified" over the Jeremiah Wright controversy. Saslow quickly reached the verdict that the book was widely disproved, and so was the Swift-boat veteran book from 2004:

Corsi's "The Obama Nation" lacks major revelations and has been dismissed by Obama's campaign as a series of lies from a serial liar. Parts of the book have also been disproved by the mainstream media. In 2004, Corsi co-wrote "Unfit for Command," in which Swift boat veterans criticized Sen. John F. Kerry's Vietnam War record. That book was also widely disproved.

Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, has started a Web site to help discredit these tactics on Obama's behalf.

But this kind of slash-and-burn judgment clearly disregards what the Washington Post itself reported in 2004 on the book as it emerged. In an August 22, 2004 story in the Post (that the networks tried to talk past, according to Brent Baker's Cyber Alert), reporter Michael Dobbs pronounced himself unsatisfied with either side's account of an alleged firefight and rescue of Jim Rassmann, a man who constantly made the rounds on Kerry's behalf saying Kerry saved his life throughout 2004:

"An investigation by The Washington Post into what happened that day suggests that both sides have withheld information from the public record and provided an incomplete, and sometimes inaccurate, picture of what took place. But although Kerry's accusers have succeeding in raising doubts about his war record, they have failed to come up with sufficient evidence to prove him a liar....The Post's research shows that both accounts contain significant flaws and factual errors."

Dobbs still tried to offer Kerry the benefit of all the doubts: "But although Kerry's accusers have succeeded in raising doubts about his war record, they have failed to come up with sufficient evidence to prove him a liar."

That's a little more nuanced a verdict than Saslow now denouncing it as being "widely disproved." But Saslow isn't done writing an editorial in the guise of a news story.

Then came the vast right-wing conspiracy section of the article, where it's suggested that an army of bulk-buyers and ideological goons are creating a best-seller outside the credible mainstream:

Corsi's book and the others like it have found their largest audience inside a conservative echo chamber, reinforcing the divide between supporters of Obama and those of his challenger, Republican Sen. John McCain. The anti-Obama narratives are the creation of conservative authors, pushed by conservative book clubs that buy in bulk to drive up sales and publicized by right-wing bloggers. Corsi said he attempts to expand beyond that audience by aggressively marketing to independent voters and those who supported the presidential bid of Democratic Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

It's always amusing when a newspaper like the WashPost or the New York Times – which could host a parlor game of "Find the Republican" among thousands of employees – suggesting someone else lives in an ideological "echo chamber."

Saslow also pressed the Obama narrative by suggesting that, gasp, these authors have an agenda. (When you're a Washington Post reporter, you can write an Iraq War book titled "Fiasco" and not be seen as having an agenda.) They didn't try to hide it:

Authors of the other anti-Obama books were similarly forthcoming about their motives. They wanted not just to analyze Obama but to debunk him, they wrote. In the introduction to "The Case Against Barack Obama," [David] Freddoso says he felt compelled by duty: "As it became clear that he was going to win the Democratic nomination for president, it seemed irresponsible to stand by as so many were offering admiration, piety, even worship to -- of all things -- a politician. Because the idea of Barack Obama as a reformer is a great lie."

That quote comes from the second page of the Freddoso book, so Saslow didn't have to read more than a few paragraphs. Saslow can't find the time to interview Freddoso, although he did talk to Corsi:

"The problem with running a campaign that's based on cult of personality is that cracks in the grandiose facade of Obama's life become very damaging," Corsi said in an interview. "That's where you can get a reader's attention and have substantial impact."

Wrapping it up, Saslow went to "literary experts" to assuage liberal worry-warts that readers of the new books won't be so gullible as to swallow them whole:

Readers of the new books are forced to differentiate on their own between bias and biography, between facts and fictionalizations, literary experts said. It is a task most readers have learned to manage. "Readers aren't as gullible as they used to be," said Tom Smith, a biography scholar at Pennsylvania State University at Abington. "One thing we've learned so far with biographies in the 21st century is that every book is going to be one person's take."

Even as Saslow wrote about attempts to "unweave Obama’s narrative," he doesn’t really explore how Obama’s autobiographies are also "one person’s take" that force readers to choose between "bias and biography." Just like with John Kerry, the liberal media usually sees two narratives: the dominant Democrat/media narrative, and the "widely disproved" conservative "echo chamber.

PS: The Post doesn't just tut-tut liberal-exposing books when they're written by conservatives.

Disproved?

I don't think voters agreed with the disproved line guys.  Proved for the corrupt media would be the New York Times hit piece on McCain's affair?

Not disproved, just denied by Kerry.

It ended up as a "he said - he said" argument and nothing could be 'proved' by that. It did serve to remind us of his testimony to Congress and what he said about his fellow troops that he could not have had any first hand knowledge of. That was slander and rumor mongering for his own benefit and that in itself served to disqualify him from the job of President all by itself.

Obama has some similar issues to deal with that he is choosing to try and ignore and cover up instead of explaining himself. Same action, same result.

Corsi's overall point is well worth concidering even if some of the specifics turn out to be wrong or mis-construed.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

I knew nothing about Kerry till he came on the Presidential scene, and took an instant dislike of his seeming arrogance, but felt I should let him either earn my respect or scorn. When I saw video of his testimony before Congress in 1971, he earned my neverending scorn.

Who's The Serial Liar?

I think the serial liar in all of this is Obama.  His flip flops and outright lies have all been covered up or ignored by the lame stream media.  Now they're going bonkers because their chosen one is being outed for what he is, and is not.  The media hate it when the truth is told about the loser left-wing candidates they always support.  By the way, what exactly was "disproven" about Corsi's book on Kerry?  It was supported by hundreds of Vietnam vets who served with the bum.  Like it did for Kerry, it's all slipping away from Obama . . . and thank God it is.

I wish my book...

was as "widely disproved" as the Swift Boat book was, because I would love their sales figures!

Winning the debate

John Edwards denied the affair. Did that disprove it?

There's a difference between showing up to play and winning the game. Just because the critics of the Swift Boats showed up to deny the accusations against Kerry, the media interprets that as winning the debate.

What started as "stories in dispute" quickly became "most people believe" and now it's a slam-dunk "widely disproved." When you don't challenge a liberal's memory, very soon the liberal will clearly remember how they saved the world.

I still cherish the moment when Reagan addressed the Republican convention, and noted that our friends the Democrats were talking about how we won the cold war. To which Reagan answered, "whaddaya mean we?"

I haven't read the new Corsi book, and I don't much plan to. I'm already against Obama for what he's already said and done (or failed to do). The same with the Swift Boaters against Kerry. I was against Kerry long before they showed up, so I didn't care whether they were completely accurate or not. However, it's revealing how stridently these liberals and Democrats have been attacking everything about the book except the actual accusations. It's all ad hominem: ("He has an agenda." And worst of all: "He doesn't worship Obama!" Perish the thought.) See how threatened they are by all of this. And when I hear how disingenuous are the "proofs" against the book, it makes me inclined to think they're very worried about the charges within.

"...the liberal will very

"...the liberal will very clearly remember...." Another example is how Harry Reid claimed credit for all of the money charities received when Rush auctioned off his letter.

"Fighters are fun but bombers make policy"

If the whole Swift-Boat

If the whole Swift-Boat thing was so 'widely disproved', how come Kerry is not in the White House now?

Apparently the definition of

Apparently the definition of "widely disproved" is "disliked by Kerry supporters."

how do we stop the bald faced lies?

I am soooooo tired of these talking heads just outright lieing on the public airwaves. I'd like to know how we can challenge them and when found lieing, cost them millions.

Nothing of any consequence was ever disproved in the Swiftboat veterans book or statements. Lurch has still not collected on T Boone's milllion dollar challenge and he has still not released all his military records. So show me where it was "widely disproved".

Bulk Buyers

"Conservative book clubs that buy in bulk", is that one of the lib talking points now? I recall a resident lib used that TP recently regarding this book. Bulk buyers? May I ask, how lame is that? Are they claiming book clubs are buying up stock just to drive up sales reports? To what end? Might it be that people will eventually read all those books?

I mean, who would buy more books than they can sell/read, unless it was a total narcisist who likes to look at him/herself on the book jacket?

Gee, I hope they didn't pull a hamstring with that stretch.

Bulk Buyers TP- Yes it's

Bulk Buyers TP- Yes it's actually been around for a while. Just laying dormant. It was used on the Stephanie Miller show this morning. I guess when you subscribe to Nat'l Review, Weekly Standard, Newsmax etc. you can receive it as a gift.

WaPo is LYING

Unfit for Command was not widely discredited as they say today in their article trying to discredit Dr. Jerome Corsi for his book on Obama.  Very little if anything in the book was discredited.  Dr. Corsi  uses significant numbers of footnotes and has done research on these subjects.  All can be looked up and most if not all are based on public information.

I would defy WaPo to discredit Dr. Corsi's book on Obama.  I would bet of 4 pages of footnotes, they would find no more than 2-3 items that their "fact checkers" could refute if that many.

WaPo should be ashamed to call itself a newspaper for the lies they publish as truths saying something was wrong or discredited when in fact it wasn't.  All opinion, all lies.

All good points,

All good points, Kevin.

But wait, listen! What's that noise? Sounds like people marching. Hundreds of them

Ah, I see them now. It's the MSM, reporters, editors, all goose-stepping past the reviewing stand. Everyone is in perfect step, a stern look on each face. Each MSM reporter and editor is carrying a weapon: a laptop computer. Each is proudly wearing a "Vote Obama" pin on the left front of their uniform.

What a sight!

And look! There's George Soros saluting the MSM marching by. He's very, very happy.

As someone calls out, "Eyes Left!", all the MSM marchers look left and smartly salute Soros as they pass by the reviewing stand.

And it's not just a dream, is it?

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

It seems to be a common

It seems to be a common theme, and it apperantly doesnt matter what the context is. The media will pick up the banner of "Widely disproved", or bought in bulk to drive up sales refusing to beleive that people (or trying to explain to us, that people) are not really buying this book.... or to stick with the theme, "Consensus of scientists", "Indisputable Evidence" etc. without ever actually showing us the proof or evidence they just spout that its there and move on.... "The debate is over" apperantly about wether Corsi's book has any factual merit or not as well............

Widely disproved

SWIFTBOATED: TORPEDOED BY THE TRUTH
Just like Edwards' affair, Clinton's shameful segenerate behavior, Uncle Teddy's alcoholism and all the other low-life activities of the dims---disproved my ---!

I blogged about this

I blogged about this yesterday:

It is really amazing what the media has managed to do:

Unlike Obama, John Kerry had a couple of decades service in the national goverment, much of it as a party leader, to put distance between himself and his very active anti-Vietnam War activism. (Not to say that activism was wrong (or right) - it was just part of Kerry's record and a dated part)

But, in the post-9/11 world with the US engaged in war, Kerry decided to make his record as a soldier in the Vietnam War a major selling point in the campaign ---- which should have automatically made his service in the military and --- his strong and active condemnation of his fellow soldiers after he left Vietnam --- something of active inquiry by "investigative" journalism...

Instead, what the media produced --- was a full-out assault offensive (to play defense for Kerry) against those who dared to investiage the very thing John Kerry's Vietnam War service cheerleading put into play.

That did not do enough to help Kerry win.

But, it has successfully --- created a mechanism to shield all future Dem candidates:

Whenever the media deems something unworthy of coverage because it harms one of those candidates --- they can throw up the "swiftboating" shield.

It is better than a battery of Patriot IIIs...

I'm a third of the way through the Obama book, and it isn't my cup of tea. It is a broadside attack - the type that doesn't really just leave no stone unturned - but picks up any stone large or small and hurls it with full force. That takes away from credibility for me - but --- as Newsbusters wonderfully points out, the media has no problem with such broadsides against the Bush administration - like the frequent positive promotion of any book that follows the "Bush lied, people died" line from the liberals.

Also, though the book isn't the kind of thing I like, it has the same validity as a book as any of those others:

It sources its information as plain as day. And it draws from material any reasonable person doing an investigation would draw from --- much of it from the press itself.

It is basically a detailed examination of Obama's autobiography (a book I haven't read).

Although it is clearly written by a guy looking for any and all dirt on Obama, it does bring out some key items that I am sure the media can't touch: for example, how Obama's attempt to connect his birth to the Kennedy legacy, because his father got a scholarship to come to the US to study and thus met his mom, won't fly historicall - or how an Obama speech connecting his birth to the Civil Rights marches in Salem won't fly either. --- which was reported in the press -- but which this book attempt to put in a legitimate bigger picture context --- the legacy connecting angle and what it might mean about other aspects of the biography.

A good porition of the book likely points out some legitimate problems in the Obama narrative, but much of it, for me, is "I don't really care" or "that isn't very significant" material.

It does have legitimate points - and some of those points are made in a way that the media can't touch.

Others are the type the media might brush aside as innuendo and unproven - but are circumstantially compelling - the best of which so far for me is the arguement:

that all the American investigative media sources he uses that looked critically at claims about his past that Obama had made in his autobiography and in the campaign, sources that look into things like whether or not Obama ever went to an Islamic school in Indonesia (something I don't care about one way or another) , or tracking down some of the key figures in the biography who can verify (or not) central claims in the book) --- all those articles --- the author says - came at a time when Hillary was considered the hands-down favorite to win the nomination --- but dried up once Obama's growing support called that into question.

That sounds like something Newsbusters can research (if they haven't already)....

Much of the first third of

Much of the first third of the book might be gunning to turn over every single rock could cast any slight shade of doubt on Obama's personal history --- but the broad stroke argument it is trying to make is still clear and valid - and doesn't really need all that mud-slinging:

It argues that Obama's biography, from what the book shows, wants to claim the legitimacy of Obama's anger as a black man in America, clearly to connect him with a greater public in American society ---- and that that doesn't quiet work given the reality of his background.

I lived in Honolulu for 3 years. It is by far one of the best places a mixed race kid could ever hope to grow up - besides the weather and surf and laid back atmosphere, there are mixed race kids all over the place. There weren't many blacks, but whites weren't exactly non-isolated. Honolulu has one of the most diverse ethnic mixes in the country. I wasn't nearly as much a minority there (as a white guy) as I was in Korea, but I was a minority pretty much whereever I walked. Pretty much everybody was -- if you consider things like how the East Asians were themselves divided between the Koreans, Japaneses, Chineses and mixed race East Asians, and that is just considering the East Asians all around.

I can't speak for the elite high school Obama went to. I can imagine it would be heavily white, but as the book notes, going to an elite high school on an island in the Pacific isn't exactly like going to a public high school in Chicago or New York City or Atlanta.

Obama's racial anger

I recently read Corsi's book and reading the sections about Obama's childhood (taken from HIS OWN autobiography) what we have is a kid whose white mother was a 60's hippie rebelling against her parents, who chose to hook up and have children with drunks who abandoned her and the children.  When his mother left him in Hawaii to go back to her drunken husband in Indonesia, he was finally raised by his white grandparents, who scrimped and saved to send him to a VERY exclusive private prep school in Honolulu, then to Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard.  While he lived with his grandparents, such was his hatred of white people that he was forced to drink, smoke pot and snort cocaine, which apparently he continued to do through college.  After all, there weren't any black girls at the Punahou School for him to date.  Keep in mind, this was from HIS OWN autobiography!  All Corsi does is bring it to our attention (since we are unlikely to read Obama's autobiography.)  So now that he has spent his LIFE nursing a ridiculous hatred of white people brought about by his horrible, deprived childhood; and has worked through his "community activism" and church affiliation and political actions to act on this hatred of white people, Jerome Corsi is to blame for pointing it out????

Also, how come in 2000 the Dems waited until right before the election to bring up an ancient drunk driving arrest for G.W. Bush to try and hand the election to Gore, but I don't hear ANYONE talking about the self-confessed pot- and cokehead Obama.  Wow!  The Dems will look to ANYBODY to lead them...  But, oh yeah, I forgot.  WE ALL smoked pot and snorted cocaine in high school...

The most important impression I got of Obama from reading his autobiography and Corsi's book was that this is a man who is in serious need of a shrink.  Get Over It,  Barry!!!

Note, how the drive by

Note, how the drive by media go on and on about how the Corsi book is "widely disproved" but fail to give specific examples.  The reason that they don't is that Corsi carefully created end notes for each and every accusation against bambi (aka 57 states). Nearly all of the end notes may be looked up on the web and the reader can then make of it what he or she will.

That is why the drive by media won't give specific examples.  The last think that they want you or I to do is take one of their examples as "disproved" and find out that it is quite the opposite.

Meanwhile, the Corsi book is debuting on the NYT Bestseller List #1 this weekend.  That bulk buying think is REALLY working . . .

I'm about half way through

I'm about half way through the book now -- and it hits its stride when it gets to Obama in high school in Hawaii and onto how he got to Chicago and his work there before becoming a member of the state government...

The media is going to have a hard time "disproving" the bulk of the material - because it is an analysis of possible implications of associations and activities. Most of the factual material is about what mentors Obama associated with did and said:

...if the media can prove the author is making that stuff up - I'll buy them all a round of beer.

If they are going to "disprove" his analysis of the meaning --- they are going to have to do something they refuse to do: dig into the associations and argue a different analysis.

They have shown with the Rev. Wright case (and in fact, looking back, all of these associations the author is bringing up) ---- they would prefer the defensive measure of -- silence.

They got away with a mixture of the two with Wright -- have gotten away with it so far. They let a little evidence out and then told America it didn't matter and wasn't like it looked - let's move on.

And then threw up the wall of silence again.

If this book catches on at all --- if it is able to generate national interest despite their bashing and shallow out-of-hand dismissals ---

--- they are in trouble.

The book still isn't my cup of tea --- but it connects dots. It connects these items that have popped up nationally despite the media's attempt to keep them buried.

The media has gotten away with isolating stories around the norm of a wall of silence. Maybe it will be able to isolate this book the same way.

If not, they don't have much of a defense line beyond that. Given the playing field they are desperate to avoid, that playing field Obama's past, I don't think they stand much of a chance by legitimate means...

(The book would have been better if better editedand the dot connecting had been kept under control and more focused on a couple of central themes - instead of more of a scatter-gun approach)

Well this should connect

Well this should connect the dots succinctly....

Pass it on to others who may need to be enlightened...

I've not cared for Corsi in the past

His insistence that GWB was selling us out on this north american corridor and signing our independence away to some kind of a hemispheric union rather like the european union.    He is a 911 truther.  but you know what.  I like it when the left is hoisted on its own petard.    so fire away mr. corsi.  I don't much care.  Although i do hear that his book makes a good case against BO using BO's own words.
