Soldier-Spurning, Christian-Mocking Columnist Signs Up Grandma for Obama

It’s probably not surprising that a columnist who’s boldly liberal enough to declare "I don’t support the troops" and mock Christianity as a "death cult" would talk family members into supporting Barack Obama for president. In this week’s Time magazine, columnist and "humorist" Joel Stein writes about how he worked to convert his liberal Hillary-favoring grandmother in Fort Lauderdale into an Obama voter and puzzled over how Obama can win over Florida Jews. He was "elated" he won his grandma over for Obama:

As I sensed Mama Ann was changing her mind for no good reason, I started to wonder what my good reasons for supporting Obama were. Did I really think that he'd get us out of Iraq all that much faster, that he could actually deliver health care to everyone or that he'd erase the anger between the parties and races? This is a guy, after all, who is no better than I am at stopping his grandmother from saying racist things. Sure, I like that Obama makes people feel optimistic and willing to give, but if I really liked that, I'd have a better attitude toward Scientologists. The truth is, I like Obama because he's young and eats arugula and knows who Ludacris is. Because he's the closest thing to the person I'd really like to vote for: me.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Feeling pretty good about that self-realization, I asked Mama Ann if I had persuaded her to vote for Obama. "Yeah," she said. I was elated, until she added, "I'm fine. I have to go for blood work again. They keep me waiting for an hour. I'm all sunburned like a berry. I get in the water, and I forget to get out. I get in conversations."

I rephrased my question, this time much more loudly. "Yeah," she said. I cautiously asked why. "You gave me his good qualities. You ought to run for something as a politician." That's when I realized Obama's Florida strategy should be based on the fact that a Jewish grandchild is never wrong. He needs to set up phone banks where kids call their grandparents, say they're for Obama and just talk nonsense, as I did. Even if it doesn't work, would it have killed them to pick up the phone?

Joel Stein was also the columnist who mocked Christians by proclaiming "Jesus was just a cool guy everyone liked because he died young. And even 16-year-old girls eventually take down their James Dean posters." Stein doesn't think you're ever too old to put up an Obama poster.

Stein's identity

"A Jewish grandchild is never wrong" The irony of this statement is astounding. Maybe he doesn't realize millions of Jews, all of whom were someone's grandchild, were wrong. Dead wrong.

Simply astonishing he would manipulate his obviously addled mother to vote contrary to her own interests. Because Obama knows who Ludicris is?

Did Stein Mention this to his Grandma

I wonder if Stein read his grandmother the following?

In a free-ranging interview with the New York Times, Obama described the Muslim call to prayer as ‘one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.’ The Times's Nicholos Kristof wrote, Obama recited, ‘with a first-class [Arabic] accent,’ the opening lines of the Muslim call to prayer.

Allan, I read the article,

Allan,

I read the article, thanks for the link.

Did you see that (we are sooooooooo superior to you in the red neck south)..

“Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”

I bet all of those people that have had their heads cut off heard that same call to prayer before the last night of their life..

I thought the same thing

I thought the same thing when I read his piece, but then I thought of all the Republicans who loathe McCain yet are willing to support him just because he says he's a conservative... even though they know he isn't.  Are these folks any smarter?

If there's one thing for sure about this election, it's that it's exposing a whole lot of stupidity.

McCain

There are only two choices in this election. One candidate will raise taxes,  fill  our civil service ranks with left wingers,  appoint social activists to the courts and attempt to redistribute income.

The other candidate  has a wife who owns a beer distributorship.

The choice is clear.

I see three candidates in

I see three candidates in this race.  Two will do all the things you list AND keep the borders open, give amnesty to illegals, approve new gun control laws, adopt carbon credits and embrace global warming nuts.  And one will not.  It seems to me that the choice for conservatives is clear - Bob Barr... yet many are allowing themselves to believe that Barr can't win and that McCain, who's got a record of tossing anyone or anything uder the bus when it serves him, will suddenly change his ways, and that it blatant stupidity.

Republicans have actually gotten to the yellow dog status that the Democrats have held for so long, and will blindly vote for anyone who claims to be a conservative regardless of how rediculous that notion is.  That's how Bloomberg got elected in NYC, and look at how well that turned out.  Now McCain is proving that Republicans can be fooled twice.

yet many are allowing

yet many are allowing themselves to believe that Barr can't win

Probably because he can't? Besides, where the hell does Bob Barr stand at the present time? I think last week he was saying how great Al Gore was and defending global warming "solutions" by the Democrats. What type of libertarian or conservative is that?

Of the candidates out there, McCain is the most conservative (which is not saying that he's a conservative, mind you) and has the best chance of winning. "Barr" none. :-)

“There are no easy answers' but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right.” - Ronald Reagan (1964 Republican Convention)

And thank you for making my

And thank you for making my point.  Any candidate in the race has a chance of winning.  The only difference is the mindset of the electorate.  Barr may have his faults, but he has always been a very consistent conservative on most of the key issues that conservatives care about.  McCain has a well-documented history of being disloyal to Republicans and conservatives, and a strong tendency to compromise on issues to further his political career.  Yet... because he is the Republican nominee... many Republicans are willing to vote for him for that reason only.  They will vote for him even though they know he is very likely to reverse most of the positions he is taking now, and will be a huge disappointment for them.  There is a word for that mindset... stupidity!  The Dems are doing the same thing with Obama.

I agree that Barr doesn't stand a great chance of winning, but he's the only candidate that reflects my views, has done so consistently, and who I feel will continue to do so after the election.  I think that anyone who would vote for someone they know will screw them over is just as stupid as this kid wanting to vote for Obama because he's the candidate who is a kid like him.

if mc's wife replaces him

if mc's wife replaces him on the ticket - then I'll vote Republican

she's already been a highly successful president

Journalism is the opium of the liberals

I understand your point on

I understand your point on principle and you're right when you say any candidate in the race has a chance of winning.

I could also win hundreds of millions of dollars by buying lottery tickets. In fact I could maximize my chance of winning millions in the lottery by investing my entire income in it this year. But does the fact that I could possibly win really make that a rational course of action?

It seems that history is

It seems that history is always destined to repeat itself.  It's even sadder when the "history" in question was only 16 years ago -- the closest we will ever see an independent candidate win (a staggering 18% of the popular vote), and even then, HRP wasn't able to get even 1 electoral vote.  We were left with the Worst President of the 20th Century for 8 years, along with his spawn continuing to swoop around like winged Nazgûl, wreaking ongoing havoc on the political landscape (e.g., his socialist "life-partner" HRC along with Nobel Laureate Algorista).

Sorry, but I'm no longer an idealist when it comes to POTUS elections....

That's how Bloomberg got

That's how Bloomberg got elected in NYC,

Again, compared to Mark Green, even Bloomberg looks more conservative.

sigh

A third candidate will never win.

Remember Ross perot?  Remember how he LET CLINTON WIN?

McCain is wrong on some things, but he actually has a chance of winning, and is right on ALOT OF THINGS THAT MATTER.

Sure McCain has a chance at

Sure McCain has a chance at winning, but why?  He's no more a Republican than Obama is.  The only reason he stands a chance of winning is because Republican voters have adopted the same "yellow dog" mentality that we have always criticized Democrats for.  When Clinton was re-elected in 1996, despite all that was known about him, and Dem voters would say "I know he's a scumbag but I'm voting for him anyway", Republicans looked at them in wonder saying "how can you possibly be so blind as to vote for a guy you don't like?"  And now here we are in 2008, and we have a guy who's built his political career on screwing over conservatives, and we now have lots of Republicans saying "I know he's a scumbag but..."  And a lot of these folks are the same ones laughing at Obama voters and calling them morons for being willing to vote for a guy who'll do little for them.

but then I thought of all

but then I thought of all the Republicans who loathe McCain yet are willing to support him just because he says he's a conservative... even though they know he isn't.  Are these folks any smarter?

I'm reluctantly supporting McCain, not because he says he's a conservative, but because he has been demonstrably more conservative during his career than Obama has ever been.

Actually, it's not debatable. All you need to do is look at their voting records. At his worst, McCain has been a moderate (which I'm not happy about), while Obama has been a pedal-to-the-metal liberal.

Agree completely

I don't understand where this "so called" debate over Obama being more conservative than McCain comes from.  it's "ludacris".

;)

I've never seen the

I've never seen the conservative tag attached to Obama.  What the debate is really about is now Liberal McCain.  Lots of people seem to forget that he tried to backdoor his way into the Democrat party back in 2001/2002, and if Jeffords hadn't jumped the gun and taken away all of McCain's enticements from Daschle, McCain would have a (D) after his name right now.

Nobody has forgotten. He's the worst Republican candidate of my lifetime because of it. I wish Thompson, Romney or almost anybody else won the nomination.

However, as bad of a candiate he is, he still votes more conservative than he does liberal. That's a fact. At worst, he's a wishy-washy moderate. At least up to this point, he's not Arlen Spector or Jim Jeffords before he jumped ship.

Well here is my logic: about

Well here is my logic: about Mc Cain and Obama.

I know that there are some holes in it but I believe we have to look for the future. Mc Cain shows every day that he does not worry about our votes. He believes in: “where else can they go” theory. So he concentrates on the left and middle.

I have a different idea, if Mc Cain gets in, he is the head of the party, he will want to push his agenda, the Republicans in the House and Senate will be forced to go along, (look at the last immigration bill) so any left leaning bills will never be stopped. Who is there to do it? The Republicans? They will follow Mc Cain’s lead. The Democrats? Never.

If we are the party out of power we will fight to stop legislation put up by Obama, (look what is going on with offshore drilling).

The problem with this is a few things, one the war. That is one spot that Mc Cain is strong on. The other is judges, that is yet to be seen. He said that he did not like Roberts as a choice.

One important point, if we cannot filibuster then all is lost.

If........ that’s a big.. “IF” Mc Cain picks a real conservative VP and only stays one term, I will vote for him.

If he picks someone like Liebermann (on the short list) like I saw on Drudge then no deal.

I know that there are some

I know that there are some holes in it but I believe we have to look for the future.

As long as you know there will be much more pain with your approach.

Myself, I'd rather fight for the soul of the party in the primaries. Much less pain with similar longterm results

I know there will be lots of

I know there will be lots of pain. The primaries are tilted in a way that gives us a more liberal winner in early states. I’m not sure why we cant have a one day vote for the entire US, it seems to work in November. It also keeps one party from meddling with the other one. Like they did us early on, and then when we kept Hillary in longer then she should have. Every 4 yearsthe candidate lives in N.H. and Iowa, we in N.C. never ever get to see them. Don’t get me wrong I don’t want non- stop people knocking at my door but it would be nice to hear a speech or go see them.

I think that if Mc Cain picks a solid conservative, and tells us that he is running for only one year, then I can vote for him. Otherwise I will vote for third party.

Aside from the war in Iraq,

Aside from the war in Iraq, there is just about nothing that McCain and Obama disagree on.  Guns, abortion, global warming, taxes, immigration, etc.  They are both in favor of doing things in all these areas that Conservatives oppose.  The only difference is to what degree they will do things.  Take guns for example.  Obama would be in favor of gun bans, McCain is in favor of more moderate restrictions.  What's worse for us is Obama's extreme positions probably won't make it through Congress, but McCain's more moderate ideas will, which actually makes him the worse of the two.

But I notice you keep wanting to keep this a two-candidate race in your mind, where your only choice is between McCain and Obama.  Are you so conditioned to the norm that it's impossible to see you have a third, and more attractive, option?

But I notice you keep

You know damn well a vote for Barr is a waste vote. Why are you pretending it's not?

As I pointed out to Sarcasmo last week, if we had a Condorcet voting system, I would pick Barr or another third-party candidate first. In that type of system, a third party has a chance. They don't with the current setup, however.

If you want to vote for Barr, knock yourself out. I won't even call you stupid. With that said, if you really think a President Obama is basically a President McCain except for the war issue, then I don't know what else to say.

What A Pain

I have an older brother who is exactly like this guy, and I'll bet there are many of us on this blog who also have relatives like Stein.

My brother decides something is the correct something. He will then badger you constantly until you agree with him. Eventually, you force yourself to lie and tell him he is right. He will then crow that you have finally seen the light, and then demand you tell him why you think that something is the correct something. It is verbal bullying, and it is tiring. Family holidays become a major pain, so I can imagine what it is like for the Stein family get-togethers. I would bet everyone can't stand him.

I realized all this when I read this line from his column:

'I rephrased my question, this time much more loudly. "Yeah," she said. I cautiously asked why.'

Stein: "C'mon grandma, why don't you like Obama? You're not gonna vote for McCain, are you? Obama is great, he's like God, only better! He's going to save this country. C'mon grandma, will you vote for Obama, for me? Please?"

Grandma: "Yeah, whatever, putz."

Stein: "Hey, everybody, listen to this! Grandma is finally seeing the light!"
I rephrased my question, this time much more loudly.
"GRANDMA, ARE YOU GOING TO VOTE FOR OBAMA?"

Grandma: "Yeah."

He then badgered her until she would make something up and explain why she was going to vote for him, thus vindicating Stein's superiority.

Way to bully your grandmother, jerk.

Stein, if you are reading this, I'll tell you the same thing I told my brother. "Get help, buddy, sooner rather than later. Go find a shrink tomorrow."

And yet, he is an Obama fan, for reasons he can't quite explain. Something about "change" ;+].

But he sure enough is a graduate of one of our great Ivy League colleges. Dumb as a stick, through and through..

The major media report only half the news. Why are they surprised they have only half the potential audience?

Stein proves yet again that it's all about self-affirmation.

It's all about Joel Stein for Joel Stein. Everything revovles around him. He even bullies his grandmother into agreeing with him to make himself feel better about is choices. Then asks his grandmother "why", as if he still can't decide for himself. But as long as grandma says she agrees with me, then I must be a "good person".

Yeah, Joel. You're so 'good' that had it been a child instead of your elderly grandmother, you might be accused of child abuse in some states.

"That's when I realized Obama's Florida strategy should be based on the
fact that a Jewish grandchild is never wrong. He needs to set up phone
banks where kids call their grandparents, say they're for Obama and
just talk nonsense
, as I did."

Nonsense, yep, thats the word I would call it. My parents, born, raised, and bred Democrats, finally saw the light about ten years back. They realize the Democratic Party they knew no longer exists. Socialism and fascism has taken its place and most older Democrat's hold views comparable to moderate/liberal Republican's. The Constitution guarantees life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Doesn't mean you'll achieve happiness, but you can pursue it. I don't remember anywhere that provides language or text to establish a nanny state so your wishes will be granted by the government (that only works for Disney).

The re-education of America is almost complete, within a generation or two. Our kids are taught not to be responsible for themselves but to rely on the government. Please don't place all the blame on the school systems as parents are the major contributors. Best example I can give you, next time you go shopping, watch the kids running around the store and see what happens when they want something and mommy or daddy says NO. Don't worry about wanting to smack the kids for their behavior, smack the parents instead. We're teaching them at a early age to whine and cry until they get it.

This boy needs a reality check. Maybe a return to the land of his forefather's for start. I'm sure they would be more than happy to enlist him into the Army for a few years... about 30. The blood of too many patriots has been spilled for us and we shouldn't give it up without a good fight.

As for the putz's wanting to vote for Barr. Please give us a break. Most conservatives will gladly remind you that they will be holding their noses when voting this year. Barr does not have a snowballs chance in, yep that place. Voting for him will give another vote to Obama.

During this time with political correctness at its zenith, I reserve the right to let you know you're an idiot.

If I vote for Barr

I'm voting against both McCain & Obama. Period.

Acting entitled to my vote while at the same time calling names isn't exactly a proven way to get my sympathy, either. Quite the opposite, actually. If you want me to vote for the statist (or the socialist, for that matter) I'd advise just a bit more respect, if not outright ass-kissing, if you want to have a snowflake's chance in hell of success. Got it?
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Who's looking for sympathy?

Bob Barr doesn't have a chance and you and I both know it. What I'm looking at is the bigger picture. Since my choice was not selected during the primaries I've been forced to make a decision. Do I want to help elect someone who really has no regard for this country and the Constitution and thereby help him select possibly two liberal Supreme Court Judges? Help his party reshape and reword the Constitution to fit their needs? Or. Do I hold my nose and go for the best bet to help stop it. I don't have to provide no "outright ass-kissing" as you state, or sugar coating. For me the choice is clear. If you want to vote for B. Barr, more power to you. Just please, don't come back later and complain when the nanny state wants to control your life even more than they do now.

During this time with political correctness at its zenith, I reserve the right to let you know you're an idiot.

You don't have to provide name-calling idiocy, either

But you did. Look, at this point, I'm undecided, but all this attitude that Republicans own my vote because I happen to be a fiscal conservative, after Bush's record, turns my stomach. Since you're voting for the statist candidate, how would you like it if I called you a statist? Not so much, eh? So adjust your own behavior accordingly. You don't have to kiss ass to show some respect. Try it. And the idea that the coauthor of McCain Feingold, if he wins, won't increase the nanny state is laughable. If he does it or if Obama does it, I'm likely to bitch about it just like I do now, so get used to it.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Sorry, still laughing

Call me what you want as it won't matter. The truth of the fact is people will vote for whomever they want. If they wish to provide their vote to a third horse in a two pony race, go for it. There is no adjustment needed on my behavior. I spent numerous hours working hand in hand with others to get my guy elected. He lost, so did Barr. The question I like to ask is how much time did you spend? Everyone, to include Democrats know John McCain is a RINO, nothing more, nothing less. That said, there is only two individuals on the ballet this November who will have a chance to be elected. Bob Barr is not one of them. The original comment listed was not even directed towards you. Your only retort is to get flustered on the word Putz's.

Back to my question that is directed at you. Do you like to sit on the sidelines where you think its safe or do you get involved? We're 12 days into August, how many faxes have you sent to state reps to explain their actions (or lack of)? How many times have you participated in a political rally of any type? How many times have you participated in any type of action group in calling for change? Have you even joined in just once since the beginning of the campaign? Just how much time did you spend promoting your candidate?

During this time with political correctness at its zenith, I reserve the right to let you know you're an idiot.
