The John Edwards love-child story is picking up steam in Edwards' home state of North Carolina. Both the Charlotte Observer and the Raleigh News and Observer (not conservative papers) picked up a dispatch by Lisa Zagaroli of McClatchy Newspapers:
No father is listed on the birth certificate of a child who a tabloid newspaper claims is linked to former Sen. John Edwards.
The document doesn't help to clear up repeated allegations by the National Enquirer that the N.C. Democrat had a sexual relationship, and later a baby, with Rielle Hunter, who had been hired last year by Edwards' presidential campaign.
The certificate, obtained by The Charlotte Observer on Thursday, shows Frances Quinn Hunter was born Feb. 27, more than two months after an Edwards aide claimed to be the father. Andrew Young, a former Edwards campaign finance director, claimed paternity in a December statement from his lawyer, posted at the political blog mydd.com.
Apparently, Edwards refused to answer questions the Charlotte Observer was attempting to ask after he waved off reporters at an AARP poverty event in Washington:
Edwards emerged near the rear of the hotel with two men. When approached by a Charlotte Observer reporter, Edwards said, "Can't do it now, I'm sorry" and quickly walked past.
Asked about the Beverly Hilton, Edwards said "sorry" and got into a waiting car with the other men. Asked twice more to address the Enquirer story, Edwards was silent until the car doors were closed.

August 1, 2008 - 15:45 ET by BlazerDrudge is reporting that the child of Reille Hunter, doesn't list who the father is on the birth certificate. Andrew Young claimed he had a tryst with Hunter, that she was pregnant with his child. He also was purportedly offering support to her and providing a home in an exclusive gated community in N.C., the same neighborhood he lives in with his wife and children. Why isn't Young listed as the father then?

August 1, 2008 - 15:46 ET by acumenThe good news is that Johnny-two-Americas (or is it two-families) political career is finished.
Should he decide to pop up again there will be no escaping the unanswered questions that will continue to dog him.
Fathering a lust child on the campaign trail while your wife is fighting cancer back home is not the same thing as staining an intern's dress at an Oval Office pizza party while the wife is perusing FBI file in the other room. You're toast Johnny....

Not really bal, the fact is, it's true.
The lameness imho lies with the MSM who dished alot of dirt out when it comes Larry Craig, Mark Foley and Newt, outright fabricated a story of a supposed McCain affair, but refuse to give any acknowledgment to the misdeeds Mr. Edwards and his ilk.

"Fighters are fun but bombers make policy"
You make a good point, but
August 1, 2008 - 16:17 ET by sarcasmoAt this point, because of the 'net & comedy-not-news coverage, I think it's safe to say the Edwards love child scandal is sticking despite the efforts of some on the media left. Combined with Drudge coverage, probable Limbaugh coverage, and sites like this one, I'd say the fear of a continued blackout on this one is over. At this point, by following his lawyer instincts & saying nothing, Edwards is if anything stretching out his own scandal, and the Enquirer hasn't even released any of their Benny Hill video yet.
The jesters of comedy have, once again, saved the day for their news divisions IMO by giving the Enquirer story the credibility it obviously deserved. Indeed, comics probably deserve some sort of award at the next MRC get together. Idea: Ignore Leno/Letterman/etc. themselves and instead invite all their writers to the bash, along with the National Enquirer reporters who first broke the story, of course.

I think the difference (and I see it as key) is The Today, GMA crowd and evening news audiences haven't heard much if anything about it. I believe these comprise a significant segment of voters--not that he is up for reelection. But when the "culture of corruption" language is bantied about it sticks on the Repubs but not the Dems.

Of course, being covered
August 1, 2008 - 16:33 ET by Chris NormanOf course, being covered almost exclusively as a joke by late night television comedians nationally, takes a lot of the sting out of it as a serious news story. Which helps Edwards - somewhat.

August 1, 2008 - 16:52 ET by acumenSomething else I have discovered in this thread.
It appears that to at least one commenter, divorce is morally equivalent with adultery. Which leaves me to wonder if this is an attibute they would be willing to share with their wife. Or better still; is this an attribute their wife shares with them? If so, I don't agree....but I do understand how one can be so flippant about Johnny's lust child.
Journalism is dead
Playing Devil's Advocate
August 1, 2008 - 18:28 ET by ElyasNot that I necessarily agree, but I think it wasn't a moral equivalent argument but ethical argument. It's more of a timing thing for the divorce with Newt.
For example when I broke up with my high school girlfriend my timing was horrible. It was two days before her birthday, she had broken her leg a week before, and her dog was hit by a car and killed. After I helped her bury her dog I was like, "Um, also I don't think we should go out anymore"
Looking back on that, I could see how divorcing someone when they are dying from cancer would be as ethically wrong as cheating on someone.

August 1, 2008 - 18:43 ET by HumanEventsObama should be thanking The National Enquirer so much for finding this out about John Edwards before he might have selected him as his running mate. For then it would have also been Obama who would be finished. (And hopefully Obama "inflate your tires and tune up your engine to save as much energy as drilling for oil" will be finished anyway. The latest polls are encouraging for John McCain).
Not only is it disgusting and ridiculous that the MSM would be so biased for the Democrats that they continue to ignore this for so long, but in this internet age the truth still gets out, of course. So what in the world are they thinking? Just a matter of time before it gets too big, John Edwards makes a non-apology, and the MSM finally has to report on it. So by delaying the inevitable, they accomplish making themselves look like the Democrat Party biased people they are. And they do not accomplish protecting Edwards' political career. He's toast. Stupid MSM. Guess they're so insanely in love with liberal Democrats that they just can't help themselves.

August 2, 2008 - 00:52 ET by DoktorFrankenWell, I've read just about as much as I need to (or can stand) about this hugely undercovered story. Since Edwards' political career is kaput by now I see no reason why this matters to anyone anymore. Except, of course, for the parties involved - especially the child.
Not that I'm not curious or that it might matter at a later date (DNA test, anyone?), but I've got more pressing things to consider at this time. If I hear about a possible VP or Cabinet post for him, then I'll jump in.
DoktorFranken
August 2, 2008 - 02:47 ET by Rush FanI don't believe you will be hearing of any cabinet post for Mr. Edwards after this affair. He will most likely return to his law practice and 'channeling the dead' during his birth-trauma cases.
Ann Coulter wrote a nice piece about his 'specialized' legal skills back in 2004.
