Obama Wows at Journo Convention: 'He Touched Me!'

Barack Obama returned to Chicago Sunday and made an appearance before the UNITY minority journalists' convention (including the whole soup of black, Latino, Asian, and Native American journalist solidarity groups.) The Chicago Tribune's Swamp blog found some journalists were restrained, and some were not:

At UNITY, the applause was restrained, after organizers reminded conference participants that the appearance was being nationally broadcast and they should make every effort to maintain "professional decorum."

Still, Obama received a standing ovation from many in the audience at the start and end of his appearance. There was also a rush toward the stage after his speech, as Obama shook hands and signed autographs.

One journalist was also overheard wishing him luck, while another squealed, "He touched me!" as she left the ballroom.

Obama offered up his support for "affirmative action" programs, and addressed the idea that he's dissing Muslims and he dispels rumors he's a Muslim:

"This is a classic example of a no win situation, right?," he responded. "So, I try to correct something that is false, and then people say, well why are you correcting this thing in a way that isn't sufficiently, ah, well, let me put it this way: first of all, I have repeatedly on various occasions said, I am not a Muslim, but this whole strategy of suggesting that I am is indicative of anti-Muslim sentiment that we have to fight against. So, maybe you haven't see those quotes, but they're out there and I have said them on more than one occasion....I just don't like the idea of somebody falsely identifying my religion...If you were a Muslim and somebody consistently said that you were a Christian, I suspect that you would want to have that corrected because that's offensive to your faith. I think my credentials on supporting Muslim Americans are very strong."

Obama reminded the audience that he spoke out against discrimination of Arab Americans in his 2004 Democratic national convention speech in 2004.

"I have visited mosques here in my community, repeatedly, and met with Muslim leaders on a wide range of occasions," he said. "So, what I would ask is that I am treated like other candidates in terms of expectations, and that people look at my entire record."

Obama was asked a follow-up question on whether he could have gotten as far as he has, had he been a Muslim.

"That's a hypothetical that I don't know how to answer," he said. "I will tell you this that the American people are more tolerant and more open minded than I think a lot of the pundits give them credit for."

Isn't it embarrassing when journalists cheer wildly for a candidate? On Saturday, Kelly McBride, a media ethicist for the Poynter Institute, declared it was not something she would disparage or discourage. She began by recalling she was shocked and offended when a Florida reporter asked her about journalists losing objectivity around Obama:

And now I am about to eat crow. Barack Obama is coming to the Unity Convention on Sunday morning and many of the journalists who will still be in Chicago are likely to provide him with an enthusiastic reception.

"It's going to be euphoric," predicted Glen Barbour, a former NBC newsman who now works for Orange TV, a local government information channel in Orlando, Fla.

"I wouldn't be surprised if Obama's enthusiastic welcome goes over the line," said George Rede, Sunday opinion page editor at The (Portland, Ore.) Oregonian.

"He's going to say some cool stuff that's going to get people very excited," said Dalton Walker, a reporter for the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, S.D., who saw a lot of Obama during the run-up to the South Dakota primary. "I hope it doesn't turn into a rally."

Obama's crowd of journalists at Unity may be a bit small, given the flight schedules of many of the journos who booked their trips home before the candidate announced his Sunday appearance. But if the more than a dozen interviews I did here on Thursday are any indication, Obama can expect a wholehearted welcome. By Monday, media critics will be tsk-tsking and pointing to the liberal bias of all journalists.

I won't be one of them.

After my conversations with Unity participants, after hearing the stories of how hard it still is to make progress toward equal representation in our newsrooms, after listening to journalist after journalist describe why she got into the business (because she thought she could make a difference), I'm not going to be the one to tell them to sit down and mind their public image.

CNN and Wolf

CNN and Wolf Blizter certainly provided an enthusiastic build up for the speech.  CNN also wondered why John McCain would use not appear before such a crowd.

Can Wolf Blitzer been named official Obama Cheerleader?

He Touched Me

Weird, just last night I was asking my German mother to tell me about her mother's experience witnessing the rise of Hitler.  Here's a quote from last night: "some people who were able to shake or touch the hand of Hitler would not wash their hands for days afterwards!"

While I am not comparing Obama to Hitler, I do wonder about the messianic pyschology of the followers.

You tell a story about your

You tell a story about your German mother and Hitler and people not washing their hands, but you're not drawing comparisons?

You're missing the point

Of course, you are missing the point.  What are the pyschological factors at play with the FOLLOWERS?

Something you could have

Something you could have asked without playing the Hitler card. But you're not making that comparison...

 It's hard not to draw

It's hard not to draw that comparison bal. Unless you can find a political equivalent on the right for comparison, but throughout political history most people who have benefitted from a "cult following" ended up being murdering leftists.

It's hard not to compare

It's hard not to compare Hussein Obama with Hitler? Really that's your argument?

Nope, not really

Nope, not really bal.

Both were followers of seperatist racist ideaology.

Hitler: Nationalist Socialist

Obama: Black Liberation Theology

Like Hitler, Obama is a charismatic orator who has a penchant for speaking in grand venues drawing tens of thousands of enamored cult-like followers.

(Obama will also hold a rally and speech at Invescoe Mile High stadium at the DNC convention)

Like Hitler Obama wants to restructure the state economy and nationalise it.

Both were illegitimate children and felt alienated and had problems with identity and a sense of belongness growing up.

Like Hitler, when Obama sought the political spotlight he chose to turn his back on the family that raised him to embellish the father and the fathers family that didn't, due to racial or ethnic inconvenience.

Like Hitler, Obama moved around much as a child.

Hitler was a convert to National-Socialism after reading a book his father had written about the Franco-Prussian war.

Obama wrote a book lavishing praise upon his absentee father, an abusive drunk, womanizer, economist and Communist.

Hitlers mentors were Anton Drexler and Dietrich Eckhart.

Obamas mentors were the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Frank Marshall Davis.

Hitlers early political years were spent in Munich a hotbed of Nationalists determined to crush Marxism and undermine the Weimar Republic.

Obamas early political years were spent in the Hyde Park park area of Chicago a hotbed of Marxists determined to crush Capitalism and undermine the United States government. (Bernardine Dohr, Bill Ayres)

A key element of Hitler's appeal was his ability to evoke a sense of offended national pride caused by the Treaty of Versailles imposed on the defeated German Empire by the Western Allies.

A key element of Obamas appeal is his ability to evoke a sense of offended world pride caused by The United States and it's war on terror.

Hitler created the SS his "personal protective squadron" or "Sheild Squadron", a para-military that had more political influence than the regular german armed forces and the Gestapo.

Barack Obama, 6-2-08: "We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

Absolutely no comparison

Berlin . . . large crowds . . . cult following . . . Mein Kampf, excuse me, Dreams From My Father . . . no, I guess there's no comparison here.  I just can't figure if David Axelrod is Goebbels or Goering.

Except Hitler was big on

Except Hitler was big on extolling the virtues of the Fatherland and the Aryan Race, right? And as you guys are so quick to point out, Obama hates America, and has yet to announce his game plan for creating a master race.

Hey Balboa

Hitler hated America as well...and never said anything about a master race in the beginning...hmmmm....sounds like you're the one comparing Obummer to Hitler

Hitler in the beginning

So "in the beginning" means pre-1925 when he published "Mein Kampf"

Common Bal, nobody said

Common Bal, nobody said anything about a master race! It was about the cult-like following he is getting, the same as others in the past that didn't pan out so well. That's too far of a leap considering what was posted.

"Nuke 'em 'til they... oh hell, just shoot 'em!"

Just furthering the

Just furthering the comparison to its logical conclusion...

And the conclusion is

And the conclusion is how??? You are making a HUGE leap! So it's logical that Obama will make that leap?? Uh, I'm from Earth, don't know about you, you seem to want to leap from this to that with no reason whatsoever! Nobody said anything about a master race but YOU. I think that would make YOU a racist! I din't say it, no other poster said it, just YOU! Take a chill pill and READ what was said. It was all about the cult-like following and how it aped past followings in the press. Earth to Bal, wake up! Don't jump the shark so fast... we didn't. We are just showing how past things similar to the cult-like following apes those in the past. Don't jump to BS conclusions. We didn't say that.

"Nuke 'em 'til they... oh hell, just shoot 'em!"

I was facetiously making the

I was facetiously making the jump for you.

I think the point can be made, easily, that Obama has a following that is bordering on cult-like status. But including Hitler in the conversation, and then claiming that they're not making the comparison, is ridiculous.

not quite

You're still avoiding the main issue. You agree that it's dangerous to fawn this much over a politician...we use examples of Hitler and Chavez to demonstrate exactly how dangerous and what can really happen.

can & bal

Yes, exactly. Bal, we're not calling O-Force-One Hitler. Libs (many, many) ARE calling Bush/Cheney Hitler.

The stark difference.

No, the point was that his

No, the point was that his following is similar to those in the past that ended up, well, not so good. Nobody called him Hitler, unlike those who have called Bush the same. It's the crazy, cult following that is similar! That's the point! Many politicians have, in the past, had the same following. Obama is not Hitler, we know that, he isn't Pol Pot, we know that, but his ideas are similar, I.E. socialism, communism, etc. Nationalism isn't the cure. Higher taxes, nationalisimg everything...etc. We don't want that. He isn't Hitler or Stalin etc. He just has the same ideas! Goverment control on everything... hello, no! This country is great because of free enterprise, period! The govenment needs to leave us the hell alone and let us succed or fail on our own without their interference! We made it this far we can make it without their interference! Period!

"Nuke 'em 'til they... oh hell, just shoot 'em!"

That point would have been

That point would have been fine if it had not been made this way:

Weird, just last night I was asking my German mother to tell me about her mother's experience witnessing the rise of Hitler.  Here's a quote from last night: "some people who were able to shake or touch the hand of Hitler would not wash their hands for days afterwards!"

If you're gonna make the comparison, make it. But don't make it and then say you're not.

Bal, I see your point,

Bal,

I see your point, but if the person's mom was German and saw the rise of Hitler, they can't say "It was just like the rise of Musolini" or "it was just like the rise of Stalin", etc.

Lol Free, like he wouldn't

Lol Free, like he wouldn't have taken offense at Mussolini or Stalin also. I think bals main issue is, Hitler is strictly off limits and reserved for the left in referring to conservatives.

I know that. So the person

I know that. So the person shouldn't have said "Oh, but I'm not making the comparison" right after they...made the comparison.

 So your issue isn't with

So your issue isn't with the comparison being made, which isn't very hard with any dictator past or present, only that the person shouldn't have said  "Oh, but I'm not making the comparison" ?

Kind of like this:

Your fat, not that I'm saying your fat or anything.

Correct. I'm not a big fan

Correct. I'm not a big fan of the Hitler comparison, but it does apply to some extent.

um no

While I am not comparing Obama to Hitler, I do wonder about the messianic pyschology of the followers.

Translation: I'm not saying Obama is the next Hitler but it goes to prove adoring crowds can be gullible.

Bal I really think you're pressing an issue where there's no "there" there.

can, it's hard not to draw

can, it's hard not to draw those comparisons concerning Obama, although I would go with Stalin rather than Hitler.

The truth is, whenever a political figure has achieved a "messianic" or "cult" like following and has achieved "demagogue" status thanks to the media, it has not throughout history ended up very well.

With both Houses of Congress and the media in the tank for him, if elected, two hot button issues that will be tabled for sure will be the "fairness doctrine" and the 2nd amendment.

Shutdown opposing speech and make the populace unable to defend itself from tyranny. Remember it's only an atrocity or an outrage if the media says it is.

agreed

In the height of Carter's popularity he was never viewed as a rock star, and Congress wasn't run by the San Fran Nan.

yep

There are few people left (especially in America) who can actually give a first hand account of the rise of a famous dictator. That story didn't come up to say "hey let me make a random comparison to Hitler." The article is about people wanting to be touched - the story was about someone who personally saw the exact same thing in Germany.

Well said Rukus, and along

Well said Rukus, and along with those ideas he would have both Houses of Congress and the media in the tank for him. The sky's the limit.

Turkmenbashy

Or, my very favorite: Turkmenbashy.

Whoever casts a vote for Barack Obama is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against him is nothing more than a moral coward.

come on Bal

I understand the point there. It's not that Obama is anything like Hitler - it's a comparison to the reaction of devoted fans. Treating any politician like a rock star is dangerous, be it Republican, Democrat, whatever. Politcal power simply doesn't belong in the hands of someone who can "do no wrong" and I'd say that even if the shoe was on the other foot.

Hitler, Chavez, and all the famous dictators of times past had one thing in common: they were charismatic, charming, likeable politicians who turned voters into crowds of adoring fans. Thus when you see people fawning over a presidential runner like this, it should naturally turn your blood into ice.

Think about if you saw Ann Coulter running for president and she was giving "historic" speeches before thousands of swooning people, and the media was saying they felt tingles and calling her a rock star. Wouldn't you be scared?

Annie tingles

She give me tingles just standing there... or sitting... or walking....

... that Obama will not be able to deliver on the expectations he has set up and/or allowed other people to derive from what he has said (certainly not what he has done).

He will eventually be a big disappointment for all. With this much pride and even worshipping, the likelihood of big scandals and fiascos is huge. Unfortunately the likelihood of such things happening is much greater after the [actual] inauguration than before the election.

Oddly enough the MSM will probably not be disappointed. After all, they are not responsible, are they? I could say 'shades of Clinton,' but indeed it looks as if Obama will put Clinton in the shade.

Impunitas semper ad deteriora invitat.

I Agree

Let's see how much impunity he has after he is elected and where it leads. I shudder at the thought.

SOBama is a citizen of the WORLD

who happens to be an American, who is a member of the G Damn America Church for 20 years, who's wife believes "America is just plain mean", and who is "for the first time in her adult life proud of America".

Oh yea this is the UNITER who went to the UNITY convetion which represents MINORITY JOURNALISTS.

Yea, I get it!

Hitler spoke of the Volks. He was not referring to Catholics or Jews!

He united the mindless young and segregated the population. And he scared the hell out of everyone else. He divided young and old with his soaring rhetoric. He divided families and set neighbor against neighbor.

Hitler and SOBama are alike in the way they speak sweet nothings to unthinking hords.

"This is OUR TIME. Together we can CHANGE"

Is he referring to changing the WORLD or simply changing AMERICA?

He attempts, as did Hitler to separate by suggesting that those who are not with him might be racist and not to be listened to.He even says it with a smile.

Or worse, they are Conservatives.

He is a scary SOBama.

If you can't see it or hear it, OMG

Advocacy Journalism generally not journalism

The problem with journalism is that too many people go into journalism to save the world instead of to accurately and objectively report as many facts as possible.

"Advocacy journalism" is a conflict of terms.  One can be an advocate or a journalist - not both.  Why?  Because an advocate has already made up his or her mind, while a journalist must be open to the possibility that common wisdom (or PC POVs) on any given issue might be incorrect.

Precious liquid...

Apparently you guys missed the reference one  German female reporter made  regarding Obambis sweat.

She gushed about working out near him in some Gym.  His voice!  Ooohh..

He was wiping sweat off with a towel and a drop of his sweat hit her on the cheek.   or as she put it...A drop of his "precious liquid" landed on her cheek.

Uh....no...no...I'm not gonna go there..but I think we all thought about it.

Precious liquid?  Is this not worship? His sweat is "precious"?

Sounds like she had a minor orgasm at its touch.

Or maybe an "Obamagasm"
