Spiked? Reports of UN Peacekeepers' Child Sexual Abuse

Rush Limbaugh highlighted this report the other day on child sexual abuse committed by United Nations peacekeepers from the charity Save the Childrren UK. He called it's the UN's "Abu Grab." This report came from Edith Lederer of the Associated Press:

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed "deep concern" Tuesday after a leading children's charity said it uncovered evidence of widespread sexual abuse of children at the hands of U.N. peacekeepers and international aid workers.

The report by Save the Children UK, based on field research in southern Sudan, Ivory Coast and Haiti, describes a litany of sexual crimes against children as young as 6.

It said some children were denied food aid unless they granted sexual favors; others were forced to have sex or to take part in child pornography; many more were subjected to improper touching or kissing.

"The report shows sexual abuse has been widely underreported because children are afraid to come forward," Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of Save the Children UK, told Associated Press Television News.

"A tiny proportion of peacekeepers and aid workers are abusing the children they were sent to protect. It ranges from sex for food to coerced sex. It's despicable."

At the U.N. headquarters, spokeswoman Michele Montas said Ban "is deeply concerned" by the report.

"We welcome this report. It's fair, and I think it's essentially accurate," Montas said.

If the UN welcomes this report as fair and accurate, why wouldn't the media do the same? Doesn't it care about child sexual abuse? Or does it matter who the accused abusers are? Why wouldn't this be just as newsworthy as sexual abuse by Catholic priests, who are also "a tiny proportion" of their kind? Do the media feel that the UN is too sacred to investigate?

Editors who want to spike the story might highlight this part of the AP report:

Ann Buchanan, an Oxford University expert in statistical attempts to quantify rates of child abuse, said the topic is so taboo it is virtually impossible to come up with reliable numbers. But she said the new report provides a useful starting point.

"This will never be a statistical study," she said. "We'd call it a pilot work exploring the start of an issue. All the research shows kids don't make it up."

Buchanan, who directs the Oxford Center for Research into Parenting and Children, said the biggest obstacle to accurate numerical studies of child sexual abuse is the reluctance of children to come forward and tell adults they have been taken advantage of.

The AFP wire service added this to a broader story on UN peacekeeping:

And New York-based Human Rights Watch accused the UN of covering up allegations of embezzlement against Pakistani and Indian UN peacekeepers implicated in alleged arms and gold smuggling while serving in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The UN denied the charge.

The UN -- after turning a blind eye for decades to cases of sexual abuse by their troops -- recommended in 2005 that erring soldiers be punished, their salaries frozen and a fund established to aid any women or girls made pregnant. But this proposal was not accepted by member nations.

Why do our media focus so intensely on alleged abuses by American troops, but not the UN's peacekeepers? Political bias seems like the obvious answer.

Essential Liberalism

Liberalism is the religion.

The U.N. is the Vatican.

U.N. workers, soldiers, etc. are the priests, monks and minions.

Conservatism is Satanism.

Talking ill of any of them is sacreligious.

You know, I'd be laughing

You know, I'd be laughing if this wasn't such an accurate assessment of leftist mentality.

"The UN -- after turning a blind eye for decades to cases of sexual abuse by their troops -- recommended in 2005 that erring soldiers be punished, their salaries frozen and a fund established to aid any women or girls made pregnant. But this proposal was not accepted by member nations." Anyone who knows me can attest that "blast" is about as close to cursing as I typically get. That said, I'm going to make an exception for this situation: Why the hell are we still supporting this corrupt, bloated, infectious pus-bag of a bureaucracy?! Even when the a$$holes running the place get their heads out long enough to launch a "humanitarian" mission, they still inevitably bring hurt and harm on the poor folks receiving!

Okay, I've got that out of my system, and in case it wasn't obvious, I HATE the UN with a vengeance. No organization in history has ever done more harm across the globe than that monstrosity (sure, some regimes perpetrate massacres, but the UN actively opposes efforts to stop those acts and do away with the perpetrators, not to mention horrific events like the subject), and still we send our tax dollars to fun them. It has to end.

"Why do our media focus so

"Why do our media focus so intensely on alleged abuses by American troops, but not the UN's peacekeepers?"

I don't think it is liberal bias anymore. I think it is simply because the media hates the United States and everything it stands for. Why else would they praise dictators, radical Muslims, eco-terrorists, socialism, homosexualism, racism, abortion, morals, illegal entry into the country and our military who's goal is to protect the United States and it's ideals and interests.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

I've also come to that

I've also come to that conclusion.  It's not bias, it's basically lying.

Did this make the NY Times front page 32 times?

The UN -- after turning a blind eye for decades to cases of sexual abuse by their troops -- recommended in 2005 that erring soldiers be punished, their salaries frozen and a fund established to aid any women or girls made pregnant. But this proposal was not accepted by member nations. (emphasis mine)

I knew that the UN was aware of these atrocities, but I had no idea that 1) there was a proposal to address this, and 2) that it had been rejected.

This is an absolute travesty.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.

This is a challenge to Curator

Mom_Rox:

A most excellent point.  Curator and I have been having a debate on the liberalism of the NYT and their obvious blatent decision not to cover GOOD News gained by the military in Iraq.

My obvious leading point is that the New York TImes had 42-48 consecutive covers dealing with Abu Ghraib.  Yet has not covered the postive news such as the presentation of the Medal of Honor to each awardee until the last possible minute, and then it does not put it on the cover.

One of Curator's points is usually "Well, the person recieving it posthumously is not a local..."

Well, the UN is located down the street of the NYT and has yet to cover this story.

The only thing we can ascribe this to is that the editorial staff approves of the UN thus does not cover their scandel to the same level as Abu Ghraib.

Fairness dictates that since these crimes committed by these soldiers dwarf the crimes of Abu Ghraib, the NYT MUST put at least as much front page coverage on this story.

But they wont.

Has anyone ever heard of

Has anyone ever heard of anyone being formally accused, tried, and convicted by the UN?  Does anyone want that to happen?  I sure don't.

This would mean that the UN has usurped every member nation's soverignty.  In fact, this is the aim of some - that the UN should be the ultimate arbiter of right and wrong on the planet.

Yet, if we rely on the UN's member nations to accuse, try, and convict, the majority of nations would never do so.

In fact, the United States ought to use these incidents to urge member states to inact laws that would protect those that can least protect themselves.  Further, the United States ought to make it contingent to membership itself.

The facts are that the United States pays for over 1/3 of the cost of funding the UN.  The majority of the member nations are run by murdering thugs.  They already hate us.  Force them to inact these laws or to hell with them.  Either they withdraw from the UN or we do.

UN got it's morals

from the LDS church in Waco, TX.

Did you mean the Branch Davidians in Waco, Tx?

or the FLDS Church in Eldorado Tx?

Never mind.  I don't see the UN committing suicide by Reno.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Serious mistake you have made

The members of the LDS church in Waco, Texas would be very offended. Being that the Church of Jesus Christ has a biblical organization of oversight so would every other member.

Media twisted

It's amazing that this isn't news on every station and news site. I fully understand why yet would like to see more conservatives bring this up. McCain should be talking about UN abuses through the campaign. We pay tons of money and let them run free in NYC so the UN owes the world to police itself.

Dee Bunk put a great forum

Dee Bunk put a great forum thread on about this last week when this first came out...I posted what I felt about all of this there...so did others.

Gawd... I wished we would get out of the filthy U.N.

Hey Dee, if you see this thread this week-end, I was wrong, this did at least get quite a lot more attention than I ever thought it would in the msm...not enough, but at least it was mentioned on about all networks that I saw...good job gal.

Thanks Tim for bringing this up today too.

Yeah, I'll remember this

Yeah, I'll remember this the next time it's suggested that we should be taking direction from the U.N. on anything.

P 16 1/32 page Chicago Sun Times

There were reports in the NYT and Chicago Sun Times on the day the report came out. They were so deep into the page it was unbelievable. Switch UN troops with US troops and see where the placement would be.
