When the national political conversation turns to excessive nastiness, will the media remember The Huffington Post? On Bush's last Memorial Day as Commander-in-Chief, Democratic activist Bob Geiger posted an article titled "Dead Troops Remembered by President Who Had Them Killed." Bush is a murderer? Geiger says yes: "Make no mistake about it, George W. Bush is as responsible for the deaths of those men and women as if he himself had fired the bullet or set the IEDs that ended their lives."
What's interesting is that your usual Huffington Post blogger doesn't have anywhere near the same amount of hatred for the people actually shooting our troops and setting the IEDs. Geiger kicks it up a notch to suggest that your usual murderer has more class than the President: "Even a garden-variety murderer would be unlikely to make an appearance when the victim's family is observing the anniversary of a loved one's death."
Geiger began:
Yes, that's a harsh headline for this piece.
But I'll ask you to forgive me because, as a Veteran, there isn't a day on the calendar that causes my hatred -- and I do indeed mean hatred -- of George W. Bush to bubble over the top more than Memorial Day.
"On Memorial Day, we honor the heroes who have laid down their lives in the cause of freedom, resolve that they will forever be remembered by a grateful Nation, and pray that our country may always prove worthy of the sacrifices they have made," reads Bush's official Memorial Day proclamation, issued by the White House on Thursday.
The Chickenhawk-in Chief says a lot of things that make this Vet's blood boil but stuff like saying that he prays "...that our country may always prove worthy of the sacrifices they have made" is almost vomit inducing.
This statement comes from the same man who himself began dishonoring the sacrifices of all Veterans in such huge ways in March of 2003, when he invaded Iraq behind a veil of lies and deceit and started spilling barrels of military and civilian blood to start a war with a country that posed no threat whatsoever to our national security. These stirring words of remembrance come from an administration that began with a stolen election in 2000, which goes entirely against what I was taught way back when I was in the U.S. Navy, which was that part of the "way of life" we were protecting was symbolized by the ability of all of our citizens to have their votes counted.
It would make sense that to be a thorough Bush hater, you must believe Bush stole the election before he became that supposed garden-variety murderer with no class. Later in the piece, Geiger expanded on Bush the Murderer:
According to the Defense Department, we have now lost 4,082 men and women in Bush's war of choice in Iraq and we should not allow the man who sent them needlessly to their deaths to lead our nation today in mourning their loss. Make no mistake about it, George W. Bush is as responsible for the deaths of those men and women as if he himself had fired the bullet or set the IEDs that ended their lives.
And before the right-wing hate mail starts flowing in my direct I'll admit that, yes, you are probably right that if Bush said nothing today I might notice that as well. But here's the thing with so many of us Vets: Memorial Day is not an abstraction to us. Too many of us knew personally and can remember the faces of a few whose untimely deaths we mark today. Some of us actually even saw them killed in battle.
So, we do indeed take Memorial Day very personally and I for one would rather that Bush say nothing at all than to issue hypocritical pronouncements and give an insincere, flowery speech in honor of our war dead when he is personally responsible for the most recent we mourn today.
Even a garden-variety murderer would be unlikely to make an appearance when the victim's family is observing the anniversary of a loved one's death.
The least Bush can do is stay in the White House today, keep his lying mouth shut and understand deep in his craven soul that the next day the Congress should declare a national holiday is January 20, 2009, the day he leaves office and his days of dishonoring our war dead are forever done.
In its almost comic nastiness, Geiger's post recalls the old Saturday Night Live fake political ad about the Cuomo Chainsaw Massacre of 1968, showing a chainsaw heading up into a crotch with the voiceover "Mario Cuomo: He's a murderer!"
PS: A fellow Bush-hating blogger approves of Geiger's post and admits the ardor of his ill will toward Bush: "If he was walking across the street and I was driving my car…I just don’t know if he would make it."

May 27, 2008 - 09:13 ET by BruzillaI agree with Geiger's premise but not his logic. The truth is that Bush is responsible to those deaths, just as any President is responsible for the deaths of the troops they put into harm's way. This reality is probably the worst burden any President faces, and one that needs to be strongly considered when selecting a President. A military isn't around just to give people jobs to do or look pretty during parades or inspections. They are around so they can go blow things up, kill people, and get killed themselves from time to time. Any president has to accept the awesome responsibility that they may be called upon to "murder" one, a dozen, hundreds, or even thousands of their fellow Americans in the name of looking out for America's interests. If they are not up to that task, they have no business being President.
I remember watching an episode of the second Star Trek show, and one of the female officers wanted to be in command of the ship but had to pass a test. She kept failing a simulation of some reactor failure where there was no way to get someone inside the thing to fix it without killing them. Despite her best attempts at researching the data she couldn't find the right fix to save the ship. In the end, she finally realized that the only way to save the ship was to send one of her best friends to a certain death, and once she made that mental leap she was found fit for command. I thought that was a very telling program about the price of being in charge.
Did Bush "murder" those guys, in that he is directly responsible for their deaths? Yes, he did. But that's what being a President is about and why you never want some weak-knee tough-feely person in the Oval Office.

May 27, 2008 - 09:35 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveUsing the word murder as Geiger did is very provocative language and in my mind it is disrespectful to the responsibility that sits on a president's shoulders as you have described.
"Murder" is not an appropriate term to use to describe the responsibility that the president holds. Murder is a crime.
I am sure none of our presidents have considered this responsibility with any degree of levity. I am also sure that if we could ask our fallen heroes if they were "murdered" by their president, we would be answered with a resounding "absolutely not!"

So does Geiger's article
May 27, 2008 - 09:18 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveSo does Geiger's article qualify as "hate speech" then? He said he hates George Bush. I'm just curious...the left likes to throw that accusation around rather wantonly.
"Make no mistake about it, George W. Bush is as responsible for the deaths of those men and women as if he himself had fired the bullet or set the IEDs that ended their lives."
The above quote is ridiculous. Geiger can't seriously say that unless he believes that every sitting president that has started or continued a war has murdered the men and women that have lost their lives in battle. Does he even think about what he's saying before he says it?
The left just misses the entire point of the all-volunteer military. No one has been forced to go to war since Vietnam.
Also, Memorial Day isn't about the war in Iraq, it is to honor the sacrifices of all military men and women that have ever served and sacrificed for our great nation...and most especially those that made the ultimate sacrifice, including Geiger's friends he saw die in battle. So if you're not happy about the war in Iraq, you can still honor the fallen heroes from past wars, and those that were lucky enough not to see combat. Memorial Day is about celebrating honor and sacrifice, not about selfishness, egocentrism and politics.

Who Is Bob Geiger?
May 27, 2008 - 09:22 ET by StephCGiven the number of phony soldiers that have been paraded before our eyes, I have to wonder. I did a quick Google search trying to find out from where Geiger claims his veteran status. A quick search turned up nothing although there was a blog at agonist.com for him with the short bio listing who he was but veteran wasn't among his accomplishments or qualifications.
Now, that doesn't mean I don't believe he isn't, it just means I question it. How many times in the last year have phony soldiers come forward and made claims and hate rants for leftist propaganda purposes? It's a fashionable thing to do it seems. So, if somebody knows for a fact that he is a veteran, I'd appreciate the telling.
Other than that, I'm offended. I'm offended by the left's revelling in the holiday when they spend 364 other days of the year bashing the military. This Webb crap bill is just the democratic way of buying votes. Where was any good feeling toward the military last year or the year before or the year before that.
How about the lies Clinton told about Iraq. If Bush lied where was Clinton's justification for bombing Iraq? Or how about Bosnia? That's okay, I guess... as long as it isn't Bush.Oh, and as far as 9/11 are we supposed to forget it was 5 years in the planning just because it happened after Clinton left office?
I was a military spouse, then the mother of a soldier in Iraq. I was part of the experience of Clinton's gutting of the military. I was part of the Gulf War from an overseas perspective of having to inspect my car for bombs every morning before driving to work. I spent yesterday angry and bitter over the posturing of those who have done nothing but demoralize our heroes.
Or how about this? There are more people killed in Detroit in less than a year than there have been in the entire Iraq War. We should pull out of Detroit... the war is lost... the criminals have won... (considering everything is morally relevant, why not this?).
On top of that, we have this hypocritical Congress saying Iraq isn't doing enough and I'd like to know what yardstick they're using to make that judgment because if they're comparing Iraq to themselves, Iraq has done four times as much toward governance in one year as Congress has done in almost two. We have 3 Senators campaigning for President. I bet all three of them are still drawing paychecks for governance they're not doing while asking for a promotion. And let's not forget the rest of the Congressional boobs. Instead of doing the work they're paid to do, they're busy holding inquiries to find someone else to blame for it.
Sorry for the long rant but I'm about sick of this government in its entirety... and the media. Maybe it's time to wipe the slate clean and start completely over with every office in the nation. Think they might get the hint, then? The media is committing suicide so it will eventually take itself out of the picture.
What's really Sad is this Vet buys the type of propaganda
May 27, 2008 - 09:39 ET by Dee Bunkthat was responsible for making average citizens spit on Vietnam Vets when they returned home. He's developed this strong hatred for a man based on propaganda against Bush that is similar to the type of propaganda against soldiers from Vietnam.
Don't these people ever learn a lesson? Doesn't the false testimony (proven to be fabricated exaggerations) of people like John Kerry give them any clue? Politically motivated people lie about their opponents because they want to have power. If evil motivations are the only thing that explain this war then there had to be a hell of a lot of evil Dems in on the conspiracy.
The only truly evil thing in America involving this war has been the willingness of rational people to forward kooky conspiracy theories and cause devisions in our country based lies that have no rational justification. Are the lies for some greater good of Peace? No. They are for one reason and one reason only - to gain power. This guy is either an evil partisan, or an easily duped simpleton.
The difference between a bar and a pub
May 27, 2008 - 09:47 ET by KC MulvilleIt's obvious that Geiger's hatred is simply a train of thought that's run off the tracks. It's also clear that this guy doesn't spend enough time around people who disagree with him. When you have regular conversations with people of different political views, you restrain yourself from painting opponents as mindless, evil henchmen of sadistic devils. When you don't have any contact with political opponents, it's tempting to demonize them. The less contact you have with them, the easier it is to de-humanize them. Pretty soon, you have visions of your opponents carelessly and wantonly plotting all kinds of evil, and you ... you alone ... must cry out as the voice of sanity to the corrupted world.
That's why we need pubs in this country, and fewer bars. (I'm only half joking, to be honest ...)
Bars are just holding pens for morons. Instead, we need some place to have useful conversations. Pubs are crucial to the mental health of a society. Perhaps they may have even prevented Geiger from this runaway paranoia. Hey, it may be too late for Geiger, but maybe there's some other bitter guy out there, who just needs a human face to restrain his anger. You never know.

May 27, 2008 - 10:06 ET by ricklailI found this article from today's Jacksonville Daily News interesting. I don't what bases the 2nd MEF involves. If this is true then how many say from Fort Bragg have been killed in motor vehicle accidents. Have we lost 4,000 men and women in uniform to deaths other than combat since the war began? Be interesting to know.

May 27, 2008 - 10:51 ET by ahusserI just wonder if this country could ever again launch any military action that lasts over two weeks without being "mired" or suffering even 1 casualty without the runocrats whining, crying and being hysterical. By today's standards we would have been unable to fight WW II and would have had to pull out after Guadalcanal or earlier. We, as a nation, apparently lack the will to be a major power in the world anymore. Why would any seemingly sane government of any country wish to be allied with us if after a few casualties we cut and run and leave them in the lurch and many of our so called citizens on the left actively give moral aid and comfort to the enemy.
Personally I don't believe we should be the world's policeman because I don't give a s##t about Bosnia, Rwanda, Darfur, Tibet, Sudan, Myanmar and all the other cess pits around the world ad infinium unless U.S. interests or security are directly involved or we are threatened and/or attacked. Too Many Geigers
May 29, 2008 - 21:48 ET by Rush FanUnfortunately, there seems to be too many Geigers full of Bush Derangement Syndrome (BDS) in everyday life. Recently, a woman in the Tai Chi class I attend at the senior center approached me after class. Now I had never talked to this woman before. After a brief chat regarding our class she turned the conversation political to the war in Iraq. With the same old rhetoric I had heard and read before, she stated how “Bush had lied us into an unjust war”. When I told her that I supported the President in removing the tyrant Saddam Hussein she became quite agitated. Our conversation went downhill from there when she said to me matter-of-factly that Bush and Cheney were directly responsible for the attack on 9/11. I had read about ‘9/11 Truthers’, but to find one in my class at the senior center took me aback. She seemed so nice and sane on first impression.

Liberals are too secure to hate the enemies of the US
May 27, 2008 - 15:25 ET by jefflebowskiFace it, anyone that wasn't an adult during the Cuban Missile Crisis has really ever felt scared from an enemy of the US. I remember hearing my Mother speak of it. Sure, 9-11 was awful but how many of the US population did it touch? Most have never been to the WTC site since (I did and all I felt was rage!).
Since we are so secure as the world's only superpower, the left turns within for it's hate. They refuse to acknowledge that there is real evil in the world that wants to see us killed. Since the left's hate of country is greater than hate of enemy, they turn their wrath to anyone who disagrees with them. If we ever were attacked on a large scale, I have every confidence that the liberal left would do nothing but stand by and die while cursing the US. As for my friends and me, lock and load!
Maybe when that day comes and liberals find that the enemy doesn't sort us out by liberal and conservative...only as Americans..they will see the repulsive errors of their ways. Until then, we can expect more pathetic commentaries such as found daily on dailyKos and that tool Huffington woman's blog.

Our car trunks back then were bigger than a lot of cars are today so it held a lot. I even mapped out my route to my planned destination, a family home on 12 acres with only a narrow private road.
