Rev. Wright's Words Sting, But We'll Skip Quoting Them?

The Washington Post touts a Jeremiah Wright article on its front page today, so readers are instructed to turn to the Metro section. The headline there reads "Reverend's Words Stir Debate on His Creed." Only the reporters never quoted a single word of Wright's. What kind of Stupid Reporter Trick is that? So what readers get is fulmination over the reaction to Wright's words, but no idea of what those words were. The Post also used the words "liberation theology" almost always without quotes, even when citing its cousin, the Latin American Marxist variety. William Wan and Hamil Harris began:

Bobby Henry was angry when he first saw the now-famous snippets of sermons by the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. playing over and over on television. He considered the uproar over Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor an attack on a man of faith and the black church.

But he also wondered: Who is Wright, and what is the religious movement, known as black liberation theology, that shaped his ministry?

Henry, a Bowie lawyer and member of Jericho City of Praise in Landover, got some answers watching an interview with Wright that aired Friday night on PBS. It was Wright's first lengthy public discussion of the debate that flared last month over his comments, which some labeled intolerant and unpatriotic.

Now wouldn't it help to know "some" labeled it unpatriotic to scream "God damn America"? Or "some" would label it "intolerant" (no, how about "kooky") that the government invented the AIDS virus as a tool of black genocide. But Wan and Harris were trying to write a calm explanation of what Wright wanted people to know:

In Friday's interview, Wright said that the terms " 'liberation theology' or 'black liberation theology' cause more problems and red flags for people who don't understand it." At its core, black liberation theology is an interpretation of Scripture as a gospel for the oppressed, identifying God and His promise of salvation with the plight of black people throughout history. It is akin to the liberation theology movement popularized in Latin America in the 1960s by Catholic priests agitating on behalf of the poor.

Wright explained that Trinity, the church where Obama said he embraced Christianity, is a place where members come "for encouragement, to go back out and make a difference in their world. To go back out and change that world, to not just talk about heaven by and by, but to get equipped and to get to know that we are not alone in this struggle, and that the struggle can make a difference . . . that we serve a God who comes into history on the side of the oppressed."

The black church is a "sanctuary" from American oppression, we're told once again. But doesn't the Washington Post understand that the term "liberation theology" should cause problems when Wright it basically insisting that God has sided with blacks (and definitely not with oppressive whites) in the United States, as if blacks are living in an American Apartheid? That God has chosen to side with the African-Americans and against the alleged American Afrikaners? To many whites, that sounds like a massive insult, the kind that shouldn't be embraced by a candidate who's been sold relentlessly by the media as a racial unifier.

The rest of the story is interesting -- and the Post even quotes from an interview it was granted by James Cone, the guru of "black liberation theology." But it never goes beyond very vague discussions of whether preachers should focus more on personal piety or society's guilt.

It never really delves into when the sermons preach racial division, and the odd idea that a Christian minister would preach against forgiveness, and in favor of  holding on to your resentment and hatred. Or when churches veer off into Conspiracy Theory Land, like when Obama's church newsletter published an open letter to Oprah from Ali Baghdadi, and Arab activist and advisor to the Nation of Islam, decrying Israel and South Africa building an "ethnic bomb."

UPDATE: Post political reporter Shailagh Murray offered an odd answer in her online chat to an inquiry on the Metro story, that following Wright too closely could put the country in a snake pit:

Arlington, Va.: How can your newspaper do a whole story on Reverend Wright's theology and whether it's controversial and without quoting from his sermons? Why aren't they asking the range of black ministers quoted whether they agree that America deserved Sept. 11, or that the government created the AIDS virus as a tool of black genocide?

Shailagh Murray: What we are experiencing right now is a category five case of culture clash. The question is where it all leads -- into the snake pit or into some form of enlightenment.

Sunday

Yesterday changed everything concerning the issue of Jeremiah Wright as a political issue for John McCain.

Wright rantings at the NAACP dinner may have caused Obama permanent damage even for the Democratic nomination. I lost count how many times Wright recited Obama's name - emphasizing "Hussein" each time.

McCain was upset with the speech and hit on one section. McCain said "It's beyond belief (referring to his mention of the Romans). And then of course saying that Al Qaeda and the American flag were the same flags. So I can understand, I can understand why people are upset about this. I can understand Americans, when viewing these kinds of comments, are angry and upset."

Then Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugnan said: “By sinking to a level that he specifically said he’d avoid, John McCain has broken his word to the American people and rendered hollow his promise of a respectful campaign.  With each passing day, John McCain acts more and more like someone who’s spent twenty-six years learning the divisive, distracting tactics of Washington.  That’s not the change that the American people are looking for.”

BUT from FNS interview with Chris Wallace Obama said Wright was fair game!

OBAMA: . . . . . The fact that he (Wright) is my former pastor I think makes it a legitimate political issue. So I understand that.

This is fair game and is a campaign issue for McCain and he had better use it. If the Obama media endorsers continue to try and bury Wright's words then those media outlets become irrelevant.

Justification

So the black church is a haven from American white opression. OK. So then the white church can be the same for white people. We can preach politics from the white pulpit without fear of the IRS. Sounds good to me. All we are talking about here is equal time, equal treatment. For the last 40+ years, we the white population have been told that we are supposed to feel guilty for ill treatment of a certain group of people. I have never bought it. I respect someone because he earns my respect, not because I am forced to. For me that will never change. Go ahead pass laws that force me to 'act' respectfully of everyone. Force never has worked to make a human give of his free will. Force and free will are in opposition to each other. You earn my respect not by getting in my face. You earn it by doing the right thing. There is a book which tells you all about the 'right things'. Take time to read it.

gotta make a livin'

Some people sell real estate some people sell excuses - Rev Wright sells the latter.

"But it goes to 11"

Wright Is NOT a Reverend

Here's the goal ...

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Here's the standard ...

James 3:2

... If any man offend [cause to sin] not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

Here's the judgment ...

Matthew 12:35-37

(35) A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

(36) But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

(37) For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

"If the good men are silent only the wicked are heard." - Edmund Burke

Justification

For them it is not necessarily about what the scripture says. They justify their direction with the idea that 'they were oppressed, mistreated ..yadda...yadda'. So the black liberation theology kicks in and all rants are justified. Meanwhile 'no one' has the cohones to step up and say there just might be some inconsistancies here.

Their blame is misplaced.

When will they put this point out?  Never.  If they blame their African brothers, there will be no benefits here.

Noli habere bovis, vir!

I knew it was a bad idea

To let that whacky whacka-doodle out in public again.

I agree and also think that

I agree and also think that anything that comes out of Wright's mouth is hatred. I think he's big outh is going to make Obama the loser. Not that I care either.

For some reason I stopped

For some reason I stopped on FNC and watched the whole speech last night.  He started by saying that his speech was not about politics.  Then he proceeded to use inuendo and humor to talk about how bad Bush is and what candidate (Barack HUSSEIN Obama{his emphasis, not  mine.}) he was going to support.

Noli habere bovis, vir!

A repost: I just watched this

pompass ASS in C-Span

He is truly a comic strip. He is no CHRISTAN and his so called church is a farce.

And I am referring to "his" church nation wide.

This so called Church of Christ is not a holy Church. Look at the top of their church as in their leaders.

This is not a black man, he is a dark man with an extremely dark soul. Very Dark man.

WHO IS OBAMA???

Personally, I think the dark side of Obama is his WIFE!

Cut from same cloth

This is Barry's ilk. They are all cut from the same cloth. They are communists. They want to "change" everything about America, particularly the capitalist system which, in their twisted minds, "oppresses" the masses. Blacks are "victims" of a system which encourages individualism over collectivism. The shame, however, is that so many of the "victims" follow people like Barry, Jesse, Al, and the Rev.Wrong to their own demise. (Michelle tells them all to go into public service, while she, herself, becomes the "administrator"). None of these "leaders" is "poor" himself. This is the ultimate end of communism. The "pigs" on Animal Farm take over and live the good life, while the beasts of burden get nowhere.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

OK, don't tell me y'all weren't thinking the same thing.

LOL.. excellent!

→ Juan Williams

Juan Williams ripped Jeremiah Wright to shreds with his commentary after this morning's speech.

Williams suggests Wright is purposely submarining Obama's campaign so he can say "See how White Folk are?"

MSM and Wright

In the 1990's it was the MSM providing cover by the endlessly repeated phrases: get over it and move on as to Clinton.

Now, as to Wright, the new phrase is "taken out of contect." Rubbish...many sites have COMPLETE audios or videos of his diatribes. What he says in them is far worse that the snippets usually seen...read/see/watch the whole sermons...

If

If european-americans would just get over their guilt feelings and start acting proud again. YOU built America -- not anyone else -- YOU! America is unique in the whole world and YOU did it. Were others around? Sure! Did they create and design and plan it? NO! Euro-Americans did though.

Stop being ashamed of your heritage. Look at what they created, designed and planned. Stop buying what others are trying to sell you. YOU ARE GREAT!
