PBS can be satirized easily as the network where people display their satisfaction with their own intellectual sophistication, as opposed to those rubes who rely on other networks for their information. On Tuesday night’s Charlie Rose show, Newsweek editor Jon Meacham warned Rose to prepare for an anti-Obama onslaught in the wake of the Jeremiah Wright video clips, a gathering ‘partisan narrative’ from Republicans that is crude, xenophobic, and increasingly racialized. The new code word for Obama will be "exotic," code for black and foreign and perhaps Muslim.
Meacham, like many others, was wowed by the sophistication of the Obama speech. "I hope that translates," he said, because the Democrats are apparently the Party of Sophistication. "We should feel good about the country in the past few months because we've had a pretty serious political conversation about what we -- at least on the Democratic side -- about the nature of things. But it is sophisticated and it is nuanced," which means "most people" with simpler minds will just conclude "there's some crazy minister that Obama had to distance himself from who said these outrageous things."
The segment came about 38 minutes into the hour, and included this exchange:
ROSE: So he made the speech today. What’s the consequence?
MEACHAM: I think I agree with – I think the tactics are not great for him. If one wants to construct a partisan narrative against Senator Obama as being too exotic, I would get used to that word as a new code word.
ROSE: What does "exotic" mean as a code word?
MEACHAM: I think it means black. I think it mean means foreign. I think it means "What’s this Kenya stuff about?" I think it means, it has to do with that Muslim dress photo that flew around. It has to do with Mrs. Obama remarking that this is the first time she’s been proud [of America] --
ROSE: So you think it's a gathering narrative?
MEACHAM: Sure, sure. If you are running against a formidable African-American candidate, and you have a minister who has said ‘God Damn America, ’ and you have the videotapes, always dangerous [grins broadly], you have, I think there's a real risk that the campaign becomes increasingly racialized.
ROSE: Okay, but so Senator Obama, he steps forward and says, look, I have, he explains it as you suggested he did. He secondly says it's not my views. I didn't say this. I didn't even hear this!
MEACHAM: It’s interesting. There was one moment in the speech where he says did I hear things with which I disagreed, yes.
ROSE: Yes, but he basically said he hadn't heard ‘God Damn America.’
MEACHAM: Right, right. But I think, this is a very, what he did today was very sophisticated. This is a very interesting argument. It's about the nature of institutions, the nature of our history, it’s about the nature of balancing absolutely understandable resentments with the need of any human society to move forward as best one can.
I hope that translates. I think actually we've had a very -- we should feel good about the country in the past few months because we've had a pretty serious political conversation about what we -- at least on the Democratic side -- about the nature of things. But it is sophisticated and it is nuanced. And most people, I think a lot of people will hear there's some crazy minister that Obama had to distance himself from who said these outrageous things. I think he did everything he could possibly do in this speech within the bounds of his conscience not to go too far. But politically I think we liked the speech. I think people who are interested in the history of these things will applaud, and rightly. But tactically, does this help him win Pennsylvania? I doubt it.
Rose also interviewed Reverend Floyd Flake, a former Democratic congressman from New York.

McCain's Move
March 19, 2008 - 18:22 ET by Kuso JijiMcCain can cease the opportunity right now to expose the phony that Obama is
by repudiating racism from wherever it comes from; white, black,
hispanic, asian etc…
Obama failed to live up to his "Uniter" billing by blaming his black
racist pastor’s comments on America. Using American slavery,
segregation and discrimination to argue that black racism is
understandable equates to racism itself and sends a message that black
people cannot be held accountable.
If McCain acts swiftly, he can take the only thing that Obama has got going for him; the race card.

Who incited whom?
March 19, 2008 - 19:03 ET by PawpawNI've posted this elsewhere, but needs to be here also. Who incited whom?: What did his speech explain, other than "I'm a politician and want to be powerful and President, so I'm going to appease everyone in a short speech!" Overlooked in the whole thing is he did not say GOD BLESS AMERICA! Here's more on my take: Yesterday's speech did more to set back race than anything in the last 14 years-only OJ did close to the same. We now know that churches are spewing hatred of America, hatred of the white man, hatred of corp America, etc. The candidate of UNITY has now shattered the fragile layer of race relations by never totally distancing himself from words of pure hatred. His statement of not agreeing is too simple. If you stay in a room full of fleas, you are not able to keep all the fleas off! When you continue in an environment that does not change, it changes you, you do not change it. Really what he said just reiterates some of what Repubs have said for years-programs to make things better do not work. We the people believe it is people that make things work, not government! He spouts about how the blacks and lower class whites have been put down by the rich-this is hatred speech. Some blacks and whites have rose to monetary status because they did not believe they were to be kept by the government, but that they could, with the will of GOD and their own hard work, succeed! He talked of lines in the emergency rooms of hospitals of people without insurance. They don't have it because they won't pay for it! Not because it isn't available! He brings up Dr King, well, to borrow from someone else, BHO you are no MLK! And what did the ASHLEY story have to do with anything. 14 years ago, let's see, Bill Clinton in WH. Poor Ashley's mother had cancer[I'm sorry for her and her family], and he says she lost her job because she missed work and lost her health care. Well if she had health care, it would continue under Cobra for a certain period of time. Ashley ate relish and mustard sandwiches. Did not any church know of Ashley and her mom's fate. My church helps those in need. It's supposed to be a story to inspire, but I read a sign recently that said, "Aspire to inspire before you expire!". Good words to go by. The Ashley story has too many missing components. I've love to know more, know why no one helped in her neighborhood, church, etc. To finish his story he says the elderly black man says only "I'm here because of Ashley", but never really explains it-was it because she went to his home and said come out, or was it because she related the story to him, or just what? The speech was void of any real substance. Lost in it all was his use of the church to talk politics-thought DIMs wanted no "church and state"! He constantly threw in GIVEAWAY programs while saying welfare state has harmed us-total contradiction in own statements. If Rev Wright's statements weren't so bad, why did the website of the church take off some of their mission statement, etc.-again total contradiction. He stated all churches get into talk like this-never been to a church in my life that does and if they did I'd leave! Says he could have just moved on and not addressed this-he knew that was politicial suicide-again total contradiction. He says stagnant wages-where, didn't we increase minimum wage, because of unions, etc, people get raises every year. He says jobs shipped overseas, well how about the reason why-UNIONS. Didn't talk about overseas jobs that come here-take Toyota, & others for example-total contradiction. He spewed hate talk himself about conservatives and Reagan Coalition, etc.-total contradiction to his supposed message. Why say "a candidacy as imperfect as my own." Looking for sympathy vote! Then again went in bad welfare state then straight into govt giveaway programs-total contradiction. Said Rev Wright had CONSERVATIVE ideas-wow, where did that come from-TOTAL CONTRADICTION! When he said "We have a choice in this country", he went into listing OJ trail, Katarina, etc., all statements to inflame, racial statements-total contradiction to his message! He spoke of shuttered businesses-but failed to note reason they're shuttered is because they did not keep up with technology, not becuase of anything bad-TOTAL CONTRADICTION. He talked of HOMES taken away-they were taken away because the people tried to live over theimeans!-total contradiction. His perfecting the USA statement lost the fact that we will not be perfected till we put the past behind us, learn from it and go on-the Old Testament is history, we learn from it-the NEW TESTAMENT gave us JESUS CHRIST and how to live. He ended on some story that had no beginning and no end-no story. And never a GOD BLESS AMERICA! That's one man's opinion!
Right now, I would be willing to settle for a GOP plot, period.

My shameless, I mean, shameful confession
March 19, 2008 - 21:40 ET by Jack BauerI have a shameful confession to make.
For more than 20 years I have belonged to the United White Value Church. My white vicar and mentor has said many things with which I disagree, such as Jesus was white. White is right. And other sentiments based solely on his cultural upbringing during the 1950s and 1960s when the white man (or THE MAN) reigned supreme.
But I can no more disown him than I can disown the white community. I can no more disown him than I can my black grandmother -- a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of white men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe, such as "Yo honkey, ya knows ya can't dance fo' shit."
Sorry grandma, but I gotta throw you under that bus.
Meacham wasn't asked..
March 19, 2008 - 21:48 ET by pbthinkerI notice that Meacham wasn't asked where the media has been all year. Since Obama announced the media, who should have been vetting him as a candidate, has been so busy fawning over him they didn't bother to ask the critical questions.
They want to make this issue about race but that's the last thing this is about. To me, and I have yet to see this question asked either, it's about leadership and character. If he disagreed with the pastor, why not engage in a debate. A leader would have tried to debate this issue and present his views, to the congregation instead, Obama just sat there and wouldn't have said a word condemning his pastor, if all of this hadn't come to light. What will Obama do when confronted with a Chavez? Will he, since he just sat there and listened to his pastor put down our country, just agree with Chavez that we're just not worthy of respect?
It's obvious his wife must believe some of the Reverend's rhetoric, so can the Senator be far behind?

Considering Michelle Obama owns a controlling interest in 100% of what he's interested in probably a few times a week, I'd say it's safe to say he ain't too far behind. (Unless he's going the Spitzer route)

I think, therefore...
March 20, 2008 - 09:00 ET by misterbee241I think it means, I think it means, I think it means. Doesnt this stupid fool KNOW anything? That's the problem with liberals - they preface EVERYTHING they say with "I think" or "I believe." They dont actually KNOW anything - that would too absolute and therefore judgmental.
You listen to HIllary, or Bill, or Obama or any other liberal wacko and see if I'm not right. It's always "I think" or "I believe." As Sgt Schultz used to say - they know notting!

Talk about Code Words!
March 20, 2008 - 12:15 ET by CobraManPBS seems to be loaded with “code words.” Here’s a small list of the ones used in just this one installment:
Exotic = outside the norm; something the masses are afraid of
Partisan Narrative = disagreeing with Liberals
Gathering Narrative = continuing discussions and/or examinations of controversial subjects and/or statements despite Liberal insistence to stop
Radicalized = see Gathering Narrative
Sophisticated = see Exotic
Translates = Accepted as fact without further debate and/or examination
Nuanced = Constantly evolving and/or contradicting statements
Tactically = following a pre-designated script or outline
There are many more “code words” embedded in Liberal media. Feel free to add your own.
One More
March 20, 2008 - 12:24 ET by CobraManHere’s one I missed:
Consequence = Adverse effect upon Liberal ideals and/or agendas
