Bozell Column: Lewis Black, Anti-Catholic Hack

Photo of Brent Bozell.

Lewis Black is a stand-up comedian. His shtick is foam-flecked fits of rage and profanity. Amazon.com advertised one of his DVDs by promising "There's eye-crossing, teeth-gnashing, raspy-voiced yelling, and liberal use of the F-word." In his show at Washington’s Warner Theatre, Black complained the Kennedy Center refused their facilities on the grounds that he dropped F-bombs 42 times in his first hour-long HBO special.

With a record like that, it should be no surprise that he’s a star on Comedy Central, that venomous Viacom property that markets mockery of everything polite, charitable, and (especially) holy. Black is the star of a brand-new Comedy Central show, named "The Root of All Evil." Comedians act like prosecutors, with Black as judge, trying to determine which of two allegedly evil forces is worse. The battle for the debut episode: Oprah Winfrey vs. the Catholic Church.

This is the same hate-spewing channel that mocked the Pope on "South Park" and skewered Catholicism on the holiday special "Merry F—ing Christmas." Now, on the cusp of the Easter celebration, it’s Catholic-hunting season again.

Attacking religion is a constant staple of Black’s act. His 2005 autobiography was titled "Nothing Sacred," with a cover photo of him splayed across a statue of the Virgin Mary with a blazing halo around his head. He has another book coming out titled "Me of Little Faith." ABC’s "20/20" marveled at his angry jokes last year, like this: "The New Testament God is really kind of a great guy. He is, especially when you compare him to the Old Testament God -- who is a prick."

Black clearly delighted in starting his new show by trashing traditional religion. He began the premiere by talking about Jane Goodall, who lived in the African wild with chimpanzees: "I put on trial all the things that make me understand why Jane Goodall spends her life hanging out with monkeys instead of people."

There was no nuance of delicacy in his anti-religious bigotry. "The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus," he said with a sneer, putting text on screen under Jesus that reads "Our Founder and CEO." Black continued: "He made St. Peter the right hand of God, leaving both of God’s hands free to bitch-slap heathens and sinners." A big hand then crushes some Indians. He continued: "When not blocking social progress, the new pope cruises Vatican City and gives offensive lectures about other religions," upsetting Muslims, Jews, and Wiccans.

The comedian-prosecutor dropping invective on Catholics was Greg Giraldo, who confessed up front: "As a product of twelve years of Catholic school, I will argue that the Catholic Church is the root of all evil. I will do so while feeling guilty and scared, and that guilt and fear, your honor, is exactly why the Catholic Church is the root of all evil. Well, that and a few other things, mostly the boy-[molesting], but also the guilt and fear."

Giraldo didn’t seem out for laughs, just for dumping a crate of hate from his childhood: "The Catholic Church is also evil because it has such a grip over the mindless masses that they’ll wait in line, thousands of them, in the rain, just to get a glimpse of a pork rind in the shape of the Virgin Mary. Then there’s the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary! God impregnated Mary. We have a whole religion based on one woman who reeeeeeally stuck to her story."

Giraldo claimed the church "infantilizes its believers. It’s creepy to call someone Father when he’s not my father, especially when I’m sitting on his thumb." But Black also mocked Catholics from the opposite direction, joking the church lacks devout believers, that Oprah fans vs. Catholics was "a battle between devout worshippers....and the Catholic Church."

Giraldo mocked Pope Benedict’s clothing: "The Pope to me is a hypocrite, in his Prada loafers and his ball gown. How can he condemn homosexuality when he dresses like he’s on his way to Nickel Cosmo Night at the Veiny-Shafts Tavern?"

Of course, Giraldo had to drag out the Spanish Inquisition, making jokes about how the Church invented waterboarding for the current administration, and tortured thousands with tools named the "head crusher," the "breast ripper," and the "Judas cradle."

Comedy Central also touted a phone poll where viewers could vote for which side they thought was closer to "the root of all evil." The audience at home picked the Catholic Church by a margin of 54 to 46 percent. I hope the phone pollsters at Alltel Wireless never want another Catholic customer.

And Geraldine Ferraro is

And Geraldine Ferraro is persona-non-grata for saying that Barack Obama is the frontrunner because he's black.

Well it's good to know that we have our priorites straight.

I'll have to let that be all...I've already posted one rant this AM....

Wow, this is just terrible.

Wow, this is just terrible. Just makes me want to watch CC much less than I already am.

I never really watched the CC because every time I did, I never found anything funny. I watched a few minutes of Lewis Black a couple of years ago on HBO I think. I didnt find him particulary funny. Stupid, yes, but funny, no.

Just another dirtbag...

I Googled this guy and can't seem to find him going after Islam like he is the Catholic Church...hmmm, a coward, I suspect. Dirtbags like this guy know a Muslim would put a bullet right in the back of this head if he dared criticize Islam the way he goes after Christians. Big brave fellow. Bill Donahue, Cathoic League has a response to this, dated yesterday, read it here.

yep

Make no mistake about it -- Christians, who are taught by "Their CEO" to turn the other cheek, are an easy target, and mocking them and their deeply held convictions is a cowardly act, plain and simple.  Not only that, but the secularized society does not disapprove of it -- Christians, especially Catholics dare I say, are the one group of people that the chic entertainment industry can mock without suffering any real repercussions (although there would be real repercussions if folks just stopped putting money in their pockets...)

Don't forget

Toss in evangelical Christians and Mormons.  They're Hollywood Approved Targets too.

You'll never find anybody

You'll never find anybody going after Islamists like they go after Catholics and evangelical protestant denominations. After all we wont burn down their houses and threaten their famillies.

Which kinda begs the

Which kinda begs the question: How come a Republican comedian hasn't come up with some killer Islam material?

Same reason

Bullets are bullets, balboa. Islamo's don't care who is committing the blasphemy. I wouldn't talk about anyone's religion in a negative way and I would not listen to such a person. The point here is that this guy chooses Catholics because he is a bigot (I think) and he KNOWS no one is going to shoot him. He must know that an Islamo would track him down and do just that, with a smile on his face. Would not matter where he lived. For that I call him a coward. If this guy were talking about Allah, I would certainly condemn him also.

Do you think the day is coming when Catholics and Christians join forces with Muslims? Will that be a good day? I don't know...your thoughts?

I don't for one minute think

I don't for one minute think that Lewis Black is a bigot. He probably chooses Catholics because he's most familiar with it, as well as Judaism, obviously.

I have a hard time believing you'd condemn him for making fun of Islam.

Wasn't there a counrty in

Wasn't there a counrty in Europe that was making cartoons of Allah and the whole world got bent out of shape about it?

that's why they have very thin skin, and making a mocking cartoon just crosses the line.

You underestimate

The evil of Oprah! ;) IIRC they got her for giving poor people new car-income as part of a car company ad, which as a side effect also gave them tax bills. For angry comedy I like Doug Stanhope better than Mr. Black, but it's all a matter of taste concerning tasteless humor, I guess.

So they got a new car for

So they got a new car for the price of the tax on the car.  Sounds like a great deal to me.

Hey, me too.

But they also got an introduction to that most-pure of evils, the IRS! These folks, sadly, are not used to constantly thinking about their taxes, so my guess is they got a relatively-rude awakening.

I was in the process of editing my comment but couldn't.

Everyone thought she had bought the cars to give away.....it wasn't until days later that the truth came out...and people did complain that they had to pay the sales tax on the cars... Well you know, since the Oprah didn't actually pay for the cars, the least she could have done was kick in the sales tax.... ;-).

So, was the car considered income and did the people have to pay income tax on it too?

They are taxable income

The cars would be considered a gift to the recipient.  They are essentially considered income in the amount of the fair market value of the vehicle and would be taxable as ordinary income.

Comedy Central = Bigot Central

I stopped watching CC a long time ago, but I heard about this before checking Newsbusters this morning because I'm also a member of Bill Donahue's Catholic League. I thought these lines taken from the email that Bill sent out to CL members this morning put things in perspective rather well:

"No group in the U.S. sexually molests minors more than public school teachers; their rate is estimated to be 100 times that of Catholic priests (see the work of Dr. Charol Shakeshaft.) Moreover, the teachers unions still make it near impossible to fire a molesting teacher. Yet it wasn’t the public school industry that was labeled evil by the show, it was the Catholic Church."

I'm not sure it's the sheer

I'm not sure it's the sheer numbers that anyone's concerned about.

So tell us, bal, what is

So tell us, bal, what is "anyone" concerned about?  The cover-up, like that which goes on in the public school system?  The protection of a professional class, like the teachers of our impressionable youth?  Or was that just your snark reflex acting up again?

Without recognizing the ordinances of Heaven, it is impossible to be a superior man. - Confucious

I think it's the fact that

I think it's the fact that people who are supposedly dedicated to a religion, that are supposed to be ambassadors, spokespersons, for God, who preach to others about how to live their lives, could molest children.

Spare me your new-found

Spare me your new-found hatred of hypocrisy.  You always seem to find a way to claim "no big deal"  when it's your ideology's ox getting gored.

Without recognizing the ordinances of Heaven, it is impossible to be a superior man. - Confucious

What in the world are you

What in the world are you talking about? I was explaining why people might be more concerned about priests fondling kids than teachers.

And when I say 'no big deal,' it's usually because someone's having an overdone hissy fit.

Huh?

So tell us, which teachers would you rather have fondling your kids?

Wow that's SO not what I

Wow that's SO not what I mean. Forget it.

Actually Bal, Someone

Actually Bal, Someone supposedly dedicated to educating children and then molesting them, isn't much less offensive than someone doing it who is supposedly dedicated to religion. Molestation is about as bad as you can get, no matter what your calling is supposed to be.

Their's a counter-hypocrisy

Their's a counter-hypocrisy going on here, namely that secular individuals, along with public learning institutions, who devote their lives to the education of children, are somehow off the hook, are held to a lower standard, whereas church clergy, and a church institution, are somehow required to be perfect from the secular lens!  If you are going to hold a priest to a "higher standard," then you really have to hold a teacher to the same standard, because a universal "higher standard" would have to apply to everyone.  While God may very well hold a priest, who knows better, more accountable than a mere teacher, who doesn't know better, we have to be very careful about us making ourselves God in assigning relative culpability in judging others.  Methinks that much of the reason for the media onslaught against the Catholic Church is to dimish her moral voice and credibility in the world -- the secular media and Hollywood know this, and they seek its destruction.

Let's get one thing very straight here: The Roman Catholic Church, when compared against any other secular human institution, has a vastly superior moral track record, by several orders of magnitude.

Depends on who you ask.

Are we including the church's less than stellar moments such as the Inquisition, the Crusades and things like the sale of indulgences and other gems that brought about the Reformation?

Re-read what I wrote --

Re-read what I wrote -- nowhere did I say that the Catholic Church is a perfect institution -- I said just the opposite, in fact.  But I did note in the last paragraph that when compared to secular institutions it compares quite favorably, and I stand by that.  The Catholic Church has done far more good than evil in the world, and I think you will find the majority of people out there, especially the world's poor and oppressed, will testify to that.

I'm not dedicated to a

I'm not dedicated to a religion. I am however, a servant of the Most High God, and saved by the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

I dont believe I've heard any caught and convicted child molesters preaching Jesus, unless it's to win favor with a judge and jury. Wow...

A mainstream COMEDIAN who is Jewish does anti-Catholic rants.  That's really news their, Brent.  Seriously, was this topic really worth your time?  Next we'll hear that Ellen is gay.  There's some news.  I usually love ya Brent, but this posting was a total waste of time.

Imagine

Imagine the reaction if a Catholic comedian made vicious remarks about the Jewish religion and mocked their religious icons.  And, of course, we all know that Muslim jokes are off limits to anyone.  Why are Christians in general and Catholics in particular always fair game?

It's been done.

http://www.comedycontact.com/catholiccomedians.html

Several of those comedians have made jokes about jews. I imagine there were a few who wanted some cheese to go with their whine, but most people shrug it off. It's an act.

And comedians do muslim jokes. This has been hugely popular:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uwOL4rB-go

The answer the nuns gave us

"Why are Christians in general and Catholics in particular always fair game?"

Because we can take it.

Isn't that what a remote is for?

Almost all comedians rip on one group or another. That is nothing new. If you don't find it funny change the channel.

And southpark skewers EVERYONE and EVERYTHING, not just catholics or religion. Sometimes it's hilarious sometimes it's not.

The episode about hybrid Pious cars was a riot.

Sorry, I'm Catholic, and

Sorry, I'm Catholic, and don't take offense to Lewis Black at all. He actually mocks his Judism in his shows. I happen to enjoy his humor, even though I don't agree with him.

We have to lighten up and take this for what it is...a comedy schtick.

:o)

I'm with you. You have to

I'm with you. You have to be able to laugh at yourself.

And in Lewis' latest show, he goes off on Muslim terrorists, and actually says we need someone like Ronald Reagan back in office.

There are ways to poke fun

There are ways to poke fun at the shortcomings of a religion in a less offensive, invective-filled way. I'm sorry, but where do you draw the line at what a comedian can say and not provoke a justifiably offended reaction? For instance, would you be offended if we brought back minstrel shows, or would you dismiss the resulting controversy with, "we've got to learn to laugh at ourselves"?

Modern minstrelism

There are some who consider gangsta rap modern minstrelism because it degrades and stereotypes blacks.

"Especially is this a tragic lesson about the disrespect for human life and dignity so characteristic of gangsta rap. For not only does this street subculture destroy life, it disrespects it and deforms it. It has no real appreciation for human dignity. Thus, it not only consumes its adherents and savages women verbally and physically, but also deforms its own members turning them into shameless modern-day minstrels. Many have become minstrels who wilfully reduce themselves and their people to stereotypical images of man and woman as their genitals, the ignorant parading on the platform of illusions of knowledge, and the self-deforming name-caller addicted to the illusion that his oppressor's words are his own and that he is singing about reality rather than the deformed racist version of it.

Within the context of this tragedy, however, is a costly and compelling opportunity for the Black community to revisit the issue of gangsta rap and the issues which surround it, issues of violence, mutual destruction, misogyny, modern-day minstrelism, standards of artistic and social responsibility, and the awesome toll all this is taking on the Black community and our capacity to free ourselves and to live full and meaningful lives."

Comedians still make fun of black people, they just don't do it in black-face.

Line-drawing is a tough

Line-drawing is a tough call. I'm not a big fan of being controversial just for controversy's sake, and I can't say for sure where I think that line would be.

So, since you don't know

So, since you don't know where that line can be drawn, can you really in good conscience take exception to the offense the people here may feel concerning Black's and Giraldo's language towards the Catholic Church?

Sure, because it's my

Sure, because it's my opinion. I can understand people being offended, but I don't think they should get too worked up about it.

God should have made an 8th

God should have made an 8th mortal sin:

VIII:  Thou shalt not whine.

You can understand that they

You can understand that they might be offended, but shouldn't "too worked up about it"? It's not like people here are rioting in the streets. I suspect you think that people getting upset about their church being mocked and ridiculed is the far worse transgression. One day, I hope you know the feeling of being offended, it might help you understand.

Just curious.

Have you actually seen this guy's act or just what you've read here?

No one is forced to watch or listen to something they find offensive. I've seen comics make jokes that I thought were in poor taste or unfunny. It takes less time to change the channel than it does to get all worked up about it. But maybe that's just me.

It's just you.

It's just you.

LOL

I guess I have better things to do than let somebody upset me by subjecting myself to their inanities.

I find what Olbermann says offensive. Therefore I don't watch his show. Problem solved.

mv,Seriously, we all

mv,
Seriously, we all realize that one can just "change the channel". Still, wouldn't you admit that it's not unjustified to be upset just to know that there are people out there who make a living by saying some very offensive things about something that may be so central to their lives? I'm not suggesting that he be censored. I'm just saddened that such bile goes on out there - and is considered uproarious entertainment by some people.

I'm amazed too...

at what passes for entertainment. And popular culture has gotten coarser but I don't let that get me down. I'm not thrilled with it because it has bred some truly brain dead people.

But to me the bottom line is do I really care what that person says? If it's a loved one or a friend then obviously I do. But if it's some schmuck on tv or the radio it is usually a resounding NO.  They are nobody to me and can be tuned out.

Besides I have real issues to deal with in my personal and professional lives that affect me directly. What some paid talking head says has no effect.

Some people are saddened

Some people are saddened that rock 'n roll still exists.

Hush your mouth

ROCK RULES!!! ;)

/head-banger til I die

Then everyone should lighten up

Gee, Amos and Andy was just comedy schtick too.  Maybe we should just bring back that show too.  Then we could tell all those Negroes to just lighten up and learn to laugh at themselves

Actually that was tried...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amos_and_Andy

"Until recently, the television show had been released only on bootleg videotape versions, but by 2005, 72 of the 78 known TV episodes were available in DVD sets.

In 1978, a one-hour documentary film, Amos 'n' Andy: Anatomy of a Controversy, aired in television syndication (and in later years, on PBS). It told a brief history of the franchise from its radio days to the CBS series, and featured interviews with then-surviving cast members. The film also contained a select complete episode of the classic TV series that had not been seen since it was pulled from the air in 1966.

In 2004, the now-defunct Trio network brought "Amos 'n' Andy" back to television for one night in an effort to re-introduce the series to 21st century audiences. Its festival featured the Anatomy of a Controversy documentary, followed by the 1930 Check and Double Check film.

And there is no shortage of comedians who make fun of black people. My favorite has to be Chris Rock's http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Rock:_Bring_the_Pain

"There's like a civil war goin on with black people and there's two sides. There's black people, and there's n****s. The n****s have got to go...I love black people, but I hate n****s, boy. Oh, I hate n****s. Boy, I wish they'd let me join the Klu Klux Klan. Shit, I'd do a drive-by from here to Brooklyn.[5]

Mocking and laughing are not the same thing

I have a friend who has absolutely no sense of humor. None. Some people are born blind, and this guy was born without humor. He has developed a curious habit, though. When he sees other people laughing, he forces himself to laugh, because he'd be embarrassed to be seen not laughing.

I think of my friend when I see an audience laughing at a bad comic on TV. Late night TV is filled with comics trying to become the next Seinfeld or George Carlin. Most of the amateurs who show up have nothing to offer. And yet, they show the crowd laughing. The crowd laughs ... just like my friend, because they think they're supposed to. To make up for the lack of real jokes, the really bad comics try the "attitude" approach, where they rant against the world. Sam Kinnison was one of the very few who could pull it off, and even he could only manage it for so long. The rest are embarrassing. Of course, you know the comic is bombing when he makes the gratuitous reference to dumb George Bush. It isn't really funny, but the crowd laughs ... because they think they're supposed to.

Lewis Black has an act. He has an "attitude." What he isn't, very often, is funny. He tries to substitute attitude for humor, and most of the time, it doesn't work. Most of the time, funny is a surprise. You're not supposed to be able to predict the punchline. I can see every one of Black's routines coming from a mile away.

So, why the hell should I allow this hack to mock things that I hold sacred? Because he has an "act?" Because he's a comic and that how you're supposed to treat a comic? Nah ---

KC, So, why the hell

KC,

So, why the hell should I allow this hack to mock things that I hold sacred? Because he has an "act?" Because he's a comic and that how you're supposed to treat a comic? Nah ---

What you're all asking for is censorship.

I thought you were anti-censorship.

If the political left & right were TRULY anti-censorship.

There'd be no McCain-Feingold, no "Fairness" Doctrine, and no various other things (starting with the speech-regulation arm of the FCC). Both sides want to censor eachother with my tax dollars while claiming to be anti-censorship. It doesn't go so well these days, obviously, but they have not given up yet.

Not at all

You're posing a false choice between sitting silently while this jerk insults people, versus bringing the weight of the federal government down on the guy. Those aren't the only choices. How about a third choice, which is the avenue we've been pursuing here?

Namely: bringing the mean-spiritedness of this clown to public awareness. We can enjoy the same freedom of speech that he uses. If he wishes to insult us, we can easily (and without any involvement of police power) just bring the pettiness of his insults to light, and showing others what a creep he is. Other can decide for themselves.

Big difference.

The supposed horror towards

The supposed horror towards nuns and priests by adults who went to Catholic schools as kids is an urban myth, played up by comedians for years. I went to a fairly strict Catholic school and I'm never sure what the horrors were they are talking about. My friends who also attended Catholic schools agree. There were nuns and priests that were better than others - the same as in any eduacational institution. This has been so overblown just to get a cheap laugh.

Speaking for myself

  • I went to eight years of Catholic grade school.
  • I went to four years of Catholic high school.
  • I went to four years of Catholic college.
  • I joined the Jesuits. I went to three years of Catholic graduate school for philosophy, and one year for theology studies (before I left the order).
  • I lived with fellow Jesuits, most of them priests, for eight years.

In all that time, I was never once ... never once ... touched or abused in any way. There was never a moment of innuendo, or suggestion, or anything inappropriate ever said to me in the twenty-five years of being surrounded by priests and nuns.

Do you know how unattractive that makes me feel?

Now, there, there. I'm sure

Now, there, there. I'm sure you were every bit as attractive as the next student. It's just that, even early on, you had a stature that commanded respect... :)

Seriously, do you recognize the horror of parochial schools as described by some of these comedians and celebrities? I went to a strict Catholic School in the South, where the nuns had names like Sister Lucina and Sister Mercy. These women weren't push-overs, but neither were they torturers. We had one priest whose breath could be ignited, but he was harmless. I maintain that many of these horror stories comedians use about their childhood are exaggerated for laughs. The molestation scandals came way after the trend to bash catholic schools, nuns, and priests was well under way - beginning in earnest with the play and movie "Sister Mary Ignacious Explains It All For You".

We actually learned things

I went to Catholic school for 8 years in the sixties and I did not see abuse of students in any way.  Several of the sisters there were very strict, but guess what; we learned that life had rules.  We learned real Math, History, English and Science.  We learned to be polite and respectful to others.  We regularly tested 5 grade levels higher in standardized testing and those of us who switched to public school in 9th grade were immediately placed in the more challenging courses.  Most of all, we learned there was something greater than ourselves.  Thank goodness our education system has made such great progress away from those backward times…

Different perspectives

Nuns whacked my knuckles with the yarstick, and backhanded me a couple times. No big deal. On the other hand, I know a few classmates who got the same treatment, but they curse the nuns to this day, as if they were assaulted in a prison camp. I took it as nothing, they took it as the end of the world. I think they're childish about the whole thing, and they probably think I excuse them too much. What a wondeful world, isn't it?

Some of us grew up liberal, and the rest of us just grew up. Period. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I went to Catholic schools

I went to Catholic schools all my life, including college and was never molested by a priest or a nun. And no one in my family was. I know it exists, so I'm not saying it's a myth, but please don't lump all Catholic clergy as child molesters. They're not. The thugs that did do this were in a minority and it was blown out of proportion by the MSM. So, that's where the anger should be, not at Lewis Black.

Mean humor for mean people

So much of comedy these days isn't funny.  As one of the above posters said, attitude (along with cheap shock value...I'm looking at you, Sarah Silverman) is often a substitute for humor.

Sometimes, even something potentially offensive can hit the right mark and be funny.  But it takes skill and nuance to pull it off.  There is nothing skillful or nuanced about this guy.  He's there to hit the pinata with a Pershing missile for bitter lapsed Catholics, cranky atheists/agnostics, and anyone else with an ax to grind with the Church.  Naturally, this will make you popular with the showbiz community.  The more that Bill Donohue or Brent Bozell or any faithful Catholic gets annoyed by these things, the more of a darling he becomes in Hollybabylon.

It's a career move.

Ah, see, I agree with you

Ah, see, I agree with you on Sarah Silverman. I don't think she's very funny, but just says outrageous things. (She and Kimmel deserve each other.)

I can't stand Sarah

I can't stand Sarah Silverman, and if she's on, I change the channel. She's not my cup of tea, and neither is Kimmel.

Turn the channel

It's comedy, folks.  Not life or death.  Turn the channel if you don't like it.

I'm as Christian as they come and I seriously don't care.  Let the guy make his jokes and dedicate your time and energy to stuff that actually matters.

At least Comedy Central has South Park

Now there's a show that regularly skewers Islam.  Sure they rip on Catholics too, but at least they're an equal opportunity offender.  Come to think of it, South Park is actually one of the most conservative (right leaning libertarian) shows on tv.
