Cam Edwards at NRANews.com passed along these stories to me tonight. Did you see New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin acting a little too silly with a rifle in front of photographers? It looked like he was going to shoot his police chief. (Video here.) The New Orleans Times-Picayune apologized for the uproar over the photo, saying the mayor did not deliberately aim at the chief.
From WFAA-TV in Dallas comes the latest story of an armed citizen rising in self-defense, even at the age of 80 (complete with video):
Two men obviously thought James Pickett, 80, was an easy target when they showed up at his home on Saturday with a knife.
"He just came through that door, stabbing and beating," said Pickett.
Captain Clint Pullin said it looked as though the men wanted to kill him.
But before you worry too much about Pickett, learn a bit more about him.
He's a WWII veteran, former firefighter and lifelong John Wayne devotee.
In short, even at 80, he is someone you just don't mess with.
What the men didn't know is Pickett had taken a pistol and put it in his pocket before opening the door.
"He jumped and turned and I shot him," Pickett said.
The two brothers, Paul and Holden Perry, ran but didn't get far before calling an ambulance.
A bullet just missed Paul Perry's spine.
"The only problem was I run out of bullets," Pickett said.
A neighbor describes Pickett as a "hero."
Worried about retribution, friends are sticking close.
Both brothers face assault, burglary and robbery charges.
Deputies assure James Pickett they aren't likely to get out of jail anytime soon but he isn't worried.
"I think I'm a ten times better shot than and he is... But they best not come back," he said.

Gun clowns
February 15, 2008 - 23:21 ET by Lame CherryI have yet to see a liberal who knew what to do with at gun without Theresia Kerry tommy gunning the crowd.
It all points to the fact they have no idea what to do with power and are irresponsible once they get it.
If one can not handle a gun, they should not be in government, media or in America.

Liberals should NOT handle
February 16, 2008 - 10:39 ET by misterbee241Liberals should NOT handle firearms, PERIOD. I'd bet Nagin had no idea how to check that weapon to see if a round was chambered. We can only hope somebody around him did.

WHAT?!?? Does he think we're all stupid?!?? It's RIGHT THERE in the photo! Oh, but he had no intent to fire. What if I did that to a cop, huh? I don't even think if I had a cop for a close friend I'd be able to get away with that kind of clowning around.

And isn't the one of the first rules of firearms to NEVER point a gun at someone in jest?
rules of firearms
February 16, 2008 - 11:03 ET by doug1950Yes it is, never point a gun at anyone unless you intend to use it on them and always assume a gun is loaded. That was possibily one of the most irresponsible acts. We constantly tell people guns are not to be played with...Period! Both of them ought to have their heads cracked together for being patently stupid. That is precisely how many people get accidently killed by another person unfamiliar or irresponsible with a firearm; then the Brady Bunch want to ban all guns because of it, saying "See, we told guns are evil and kill people." I have loaded weapons in our home and have yet to see one jump out of a closet and shoot someone. They are lucky they did not break in here. I wouldn't be greeting them with a 22 cal. peashooter.
of course
February 16, 2008 - 00:22 ET by bigpapathe media thinks we're all stupid... and if you or I did that we would be on the ground and in cuffs...
As far as Mr. Pickett.. God bless him and may we all learn a lesson... that's why I have a CCW...

Regardless of Mayor Nagin's
February 16, 2008 - 02:08 ET by sixgunRegardless of Mayor Nagin's intent, a person as ignorant of firearms as Mayor Nagin is, he should never have handled the weapon in the first place. If the "unloaded" weapon had of gone off and killed the chief, it would lead to another round of "ban the weapons" by the MSM. As far as Mr. Pickett is concerned; Congratulaions!!! How many bullets do you need?

February 18, 2008 - 14:33 ET by masslibertarianAnd there is no such thing as an unloaded gun!
Some of those that want to confiscate citizen-owned guns...
February 16, 2008 - 05:02 ET by on-the-rocksseem to be ignorant as to how to properly handle a gun, as well.
I haven't seen the Nagin photo, yet, but I recall a news photo of Diane (sp.?) Feinstein at a news conference a few years ago, standing on a platform, holding an "assault rifle" (maybe an AR-15) at waist level (pointed at the crowd) - with her right index finger INSIDE THE TRIGGER GUARD, while talking to the assembled media and onlookers.
Most of the crowd was oblivious to the Senator's ignorance and the danger presented by the way the "good Senator" was holding the gun, rather they were enthralled by her "words of wisdom" as to why we didn't need such weapons to defend our homes.
I don't know if anyone had the good sense to holler "Will you please point that damn thing at the ceiling?". Probably not.
Here's the photo

Thanks for the link
February 16, 2008 - 14:32 ET by on-the-rocksIt had been a few years longer than I realized. Sorry I had the gun-type wrong. The photo I saw was taken from in front of her and her index finger was definitely inside the trigger guard.

Brief Internet search reveals nothing yet.

Most of the posters have it
February 16, 2008 - 11:00 ET by ArchConservativeMost of the posters have it exactly right. Never point a firearm at anyone unless you intend to use it. I don't care if it's been checked 100 times, you don't do it.
If this was a Republican mayor doing it, he would be splashed all over the MSM and run out of his job. But since he's a minority, a (d)emocrat, and the mayor of one of the most corrupt cities in the US, he's given a slap and a pass.
New Orleans deserves what they get. If they had a Haley Barbour they would have already been up and running months and months if not a year or so ago. But they elected Nagin and Landreu so I cannot feel too sorry for them. Elect better next time Big Easy.
And by the way, it's too bad that the gentleman from Texas didn't kill those two. Now they will be supported by taxpayer dollars.
You support the troops by supporting the mission! If you don't support the mission, have the guts to say you don't support the troops.
Is it just me or ...
February 16, 2008 - 13:44 ET by blogonatordo these two look like a couple kids playing guns, I can hear them saying, "Bang, Bang ... you’re dead." That's entirely the problem, since they (liberals) have no clue how to handle, use, or appreciate the purpose of firearms, they project that no one else does. They figure since they (in all the superiority) can't get their heads around practicality of firearms then there could not possibly be one. After all if we the keepers of all that is good and right in the world are incapable of acting appropriately with a firearm how can those evil and wrongheaded conservatives conduct themselves responsibly with such a dangerous instrument. God forbid an individual be empowered to take responsibility for (protecting) himself. We can not have people acting independent out from under the protective thumb of government. Imagine if liberals had as much difficulty handling a car as they do a firearm.
