Pundits Play Up McCain Win, Play Down Romney Win

The Republicans had two contests for delegates on Saturday, but many pundits played the game of playing up the hotly contested race, and playing down the "little-contested" race, even though they equally count at convention time. In this case, it also means playing up media favorite John McCain and playing down media un-favorite Mitt Romney. Here's AP reporter Tom Raum:

Among Republicans, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney cruised to victory in the little-contested GOP Nevada caucuses.

But McCain's victory in South Carolina could shake up the GOP contest and give him political grasp. McCain won in New Hampshire but placed second to Romney in Michigan.

This kind of punditry, assuming McCain's victory is the one with the "grasp," ignores the actual delegate count. According to CNN on Sunday morning, Romney has 72, McCain has 38, and Huckabee has 29.

PS: On Fox News Saturday night, William Kristol (a leading McCain booster in 2000) claimed McCain's chances at the nomination now were "better than 50-50," while Romney's were "about one in four."

McCain's chances at the nomination now were "better than 50-50," while Romney's were "about one in four."

In what parallel universe??? I'm not sure how the "delegate" thing works, but I'm pretty sure more is better, so on what basis does Kristol make that prognostication???

Oh, I see, now; Kristol, a leading McCain booster in 2000.

Scientific data. Got it.

The MSM want McCain or

The MSM want McCain or Schmuck-a-beee to win the nomination because they believe that Hillary or Obama will beat the hell out of them. I agree with that, but I also believe that the MSM could live with liberal Republicans like these 2.

If you believe the MSM are biased, & you believe that they try to lie to you in order to push the agenda they want, you should almost always go against the very people, places, or things they are pumping up. Since they hate Mitt, Fred, & Rudy, & talk down their chances & ability to be President, ask yourself why? That alone should make you put these 3 guys  at the top of your list. You just need to figure out the order.

"Here I come to save the day!"

Romney Dog is here, ignoring him won't make him go away. It's not just the pundits, the press is breaking out the champaign for McCain. One story claimed that McCain & Hillary were Saturdays big winner's. They ignore Mitt's lopsided blowout in Nevada and the fact that he practically tied with southerner Fred Thompson in South Carolina. The way I see it, Mitt received 22,000 votes to Hillary's 5,300. THAT'S A HUGE STORY!

Crash

FYI

Mitt did recieve 22,000 raw votes but the media didnt report raw votes for the dems. The 5,300 is some kind of district delegate count. Her real vote was much higher.

"I don't want 'change', I want my money's worth!" Me

Well whack me with a tally stick! I'll never understand why we can't have the straight raw facts.

I am a fan of Bill Kristol,

I am a fan of Bill Kristol, but it seems he is even caught up in all the media hype. The conservatives haven't had much of a chance to vote in any numbers yet. I think it is quite silly to be placing odds at this stage of the race. Settle down Bill, settle down.

It is obvious what the MSM is doing and why they like McCain

They give Fred no coverage at all throughout the whole primaries and they under report Romney's winnings. Romney won Wyoming, Michigan and Nevada and came in second in Iowa and New Hampshire. Now imagine if Obama had done this. It would be the second coming.

Ann Coulter: Romney is Strongest GOP Candidate (Video)

I hear liberals say that they can accept McCain because he does not want to deport illegals, he does not support torture, he voted against the gay marriage amendment, he recognizes global warming as a serious issue and he supports embryonic stem cell research. I kid you not.

In other words, you hear liberals say they can accept McCain because ... he's a liberal :-)

Rush is right; the Republican party is essentially commiting suicide if it compromises its fundamental principles by nominating McCain or Huckabee just in hopes of beating Hillary.

Fox News is pulling for McCain

Fox News isn't trying to hide their exuberance for John McCain. And quit frankly, I'm pretty disgusted.

Is There An Epidemic of Short-Term Memory Loss??

McCain or Willard could not have won if their records were known...there's just no way!

FOXNews continues to disappoint - pushing for McCain

The WSJ last night was trying to state that McCain has a good tax package. Give me a break. They know he did not vote for Bush's tax cuts. The WSJ is conservative but not on immigration. To big business illegals are cheap labor and good for the bottom line. Which is why Rudy is their ideal candidate. With Rudy slipping, McCain is the next best thing. Rudy is at least better than McCain on taxes but it is obvious that FOX and the WSJ are not pushing for a close the borders candidate. I am noticing more of a rift in the FOXNews staff on various issues.

IMO Huckabee's surge is the result of FOXNews trying to push Rudy too hard early. Then Hannity had Chuck Norris on as a guest host and well the rest is history.

Ditto the posts here

Ditto the posts here concerning the over weighting of McCain's victory vs Romney's.  Note, McCain is even behind Huckabee in total delegates at this point.

Nevertheless, the real story of the weekend was the lavish and false claim that billary won against bambi.  bambi capture more delegates by one.  He clearly was the winner in Neveda, yet the drive bys are playing for billary.  I will concede that she is clearly ahead in the overall delegate count.

Oh sure!!

I saw the coverage this weeknd....I almost hurled my dinner....the MSM with their constant 'momentum, momentum, momentum' mantra. I know what Mccain is!! Hes stifled free speech, pro illegal immigration....the repitition of the word 'momentum' is not going to sway me in the slightest.

There is no way I will vote for Mccain....hes a liberal!!

They push McCain and Huckster

Because they know that either of them can be easily defeated, they will nail McCain on flip-flopping and Huckabee as a religous fanatic. Should either one somehow win the libs will still have a liberal puppet in the white house.

Only Fred can save us.

Why Are These States Uncontested?

There's a reason that these states in the west are uncontested:  the McHucks know that they cannot win vs. Romney.  It also shows that the McHucks lack the funds to do battle in every state.

Rasmussen has a poll out today that shows Romney with a 5 point advantage in Florida.  If Romney wins in Florida it will sink all of the other candidates and finally give the GOP a chance to coelesce around someone before the convention.

Whoa. Rasmussen just ruined Giuliani's day.
