My friend Cam Edwards proclaimed he was going on a "rant" on Friday night on his radio show "Cam & Company" (on Sirius satellite radio and at nranews.com) about the latest example of the national media ignoring stories of armed self-defense. While the networks were charmed by the story of 14-year-old Michael Six fending off a burglar with a baseball bat in Arizona, there was this eyebrow-raising story from the Orlando Sentinel:
An armed citizen surprised four men who robbed him at gunpoint last week.
After being ordered to his knees, Russel Olofson warned the men that "they should think about it," according to an Orlando police report released this week.
A private investigator with military training, Olofson, 24, told police the robbers snatched his cell phone and a wallet containing his concealed-weapon permit shortly before 10 p.m. Friday outside Ridge Club Apartments.
After the robbers took his items, Olofson stood up, drew his Springfield XD sub-compact 9 mm handgun "and fired two rounds toward male #1 with the silver handgun, possibly striking him," the report states. "Males #2, #3, and #4 then ran southeast . . . and male #1 ran northeast . . ."
A search by police quickly turned up a pistol likely used in the holdup, the report said.
The .45-caliber Ruger pistol and clothing believed to have been worn by male 1 were found in the backyard of a home on Alrix Drive, reports state. The serial numbers on the pistol had been scratched off, a common sign the weapon may have been stolen.
Cam felt a story like this had all of the inherent drama and suspense that the networks can find in a human-interest story. But we suspected that TV assignment editors like "kids with a bat" stories better than a trained man with a gun.

Very Nice
January 19, 2008 - 18:49 ET by OldSailor88Great story. This man had much more composure than me. I would have found an earlier opportunity to shoot. The media will never cover this. A registered gun user protecting him or herself is against all their talking points. If this would have been a story about three armed thugs shooting an innocent citizen who wasn't armed, it would be splashed freely across the local and state news.
As I've seen posted here before.
62 million registered gun users didn't commit a murder today.

Those 9's might as well be marshmallows
January 19, 2008 - 19:22 ET by Lame CherryUnless "to quote Ted Nugent" one has Corbon loads in the 9's they really suck as life saving weapon. They just do not have the "square load" to coin an old black powder shotgun phrase to do what needs doing.
The old American Rifleman printed an entire analysis of handgun loads and the FBI collected data on police shootings to stop crime with one shot were that the old 38 Special loaded with the FBI load, which is the 158 gr. semi wadcutter was what stopped most human criminals with one round expended. They surpassed the 10 mm Eagles, 44 Magnums and even the 38's big brother the 357 Magnum which is allot of noise.
I would think a military man would know better than to have a 9 mm in any form. The now decade old 40 Smith & Wesson is a much better tool and in those Rugers are simply a lovely package if you have to go semi auto. I still maintain though the 38 revolver is superior as those critters never have hang fires or jams. They just shoot when you need them and with 5 shots it should have given you one to spare with 4 thugs.
PS: Baseball bats beating on criminals..............I demand Congressional hearings and Pig Nose Waxman to tax baseball and to have background checks on all bats, with serial numbers and a special carry permit from your local police for every T ball 5 year old as those bats are deadly.

I shot a friend's XD9,
January 19, 2008 - 20:13 ET by amberI shot a friend's XD9, they are really nice. It was very accurate and felt great in my hands. For all those big gun people, a 9 is a fabulous cary weapon. You are responsible for all of your rounds. Overpenetration is a bigger issue with a 45, even if you use hollow points. I have a 9, not the XD, and I chose it for that reason, plus I like to practice and the 40 and 45 are a much more pricy round. The XD9 is a great weapon. I am a little sorry I have my beretta, but I figured there are a million of mine (92F) and if I ever need a part I can always find one.
I wish more people realized that their safety is their responsability.
Hard to say for sure ...
January 20, 2008 - 12:23 ET by masslibertarian... but I have to believe if I fired 2 rounds at close quarters there would at least be a corpse to account for. Of course, I've been shooting for longer than our protagonist has been alive.
In any event, he had the composure to get himself through the situation and deserves kudos for that. Shame he couldn't have done a little civic improvement along the way.
That Springfield XD is a nice pistol. It's reasonably priced, reliable and accurate. Our local police department carries them, and they're becoming pretty popular with law enforcement.
I wouldn't trust my life to the 9mm, though. .40 S&W is pretty much the minimum in my book.
Caliber vs placement

Ask a veterinarian the caliber of the humane killer they keep to put down horses--it's .22. It's all about knowing the right spot. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

No, it's not "fair" or "sporting", but who cares? The more of these parasites taken care of, the better.

9mm vs.
January 20, 2008 - 21:49 ET by MaximusBraveheartThe media is so biased against gun owners it is unreal. Very madening.
I say use what you have... Better to have a .22 than nothing. I have a S&W .380 Sigma w/ Hydrashock. I would like another like a compact .45 but don't have the $ for that right now. My wife has a NAA very compact .32 auto (really neat gun if you have seen one). We also have full size Ruger 45 & 9mm but those are big for concealed carry but are good for in the car or by the bed.
Also, I have been shot w/ a .22 during a breakin to my apartment in college. Trust me when I say I don't think a robber would be too encouraged in continuing his plan after getting hit w/even a .22. All you care about at that point is where is the ambulance.

January 21, 2008 - 00:36 ET by sixgunAlthough I'm mostly a blackpowder shooter anymore, I always used to carry a S&W 38cal. Matched with the 158gr semi-wadcutter and a speed loader, not much to worry about. But, the MSM will rarely mention anything about an armed citizen doing anything good. It doesn't fit their agenda.
