Chris Matthews took his sloppy and blabby talk routine to The Tonight Show on Wednesday and after a few minutes trying to dig out with Media Matters and Hillary fans for saying she got where she is through her husband's wild sex life, he compared the Republicans to Iraqi factions. The Laura Ingraham show played this clip repeatedly today:
Nobody seems to be the leader yet. Nobody's Ronald Reagan. They don't seem to have a -- used to be the Democrats were the disorganized political party. Now, the Republicans are like the -- like the Iraqis. Have you noticed? They got their Shia wing, the fanatics. They've got Huckabee. This where I get into trouble. This is just where I get into trouble. [ Laughter ] Huckabee and Thompson are the Shiites, and the Sunni, the more moderate guys, are McCain, and -- who else they got over there? And uh, Rudy Giuliani. And then they got Romney, the Kurd. I mean, they're all over the place. Who's gonna unite them?
Leno added: "And Senator Larry Craig is the guy with the sheep."
MRC's Geoff Dickens reported to me that Matthews used a variant of this attack line on Hardball yesterday, too:
I was suggesting, I know this is gonna cause trouble, which is what I like to do but the Sunni wing of the Republican Party has got McCain and Giuliani in it, the more extreme people, the zealots, are Huckabee and Thompson. Then you’ve got the Kurds, Romney. I mean who’s gonna put all these guys together?

And this guy...
January 17, 2008 - 12:24 ET by Prester John....actually gets paid to come up with this stuff?
ugh....
January 17, 2008 - 13:20 ET by dronetekI saw this on hardball when he said it. He actually says,
"I know this is going to get me in trouble", before he made the comparison.
I wonder what specifically
January 17, 2008 - 14:23 ET by tracheostomyI wonder what specifically happens to him when he gets, "in trouble."
A stern look?
Someone shakes their finger at him?

The lunatics have taken
January 17, 2008 - 12:26 ET by stratmanThe lunatics have taken over the asylum.
Killing them with kindness isn't working. Time to get scrappy with the Donkeys.
Missing one point...
January 17, 2008 - 12:42 ET by shannon20He's missing the most important point, our leaders aren't running around killing their opposition.
I do agree Matthews (yuck),
January 17, 2008 - 12:50 ET by Chris NormanI do agree Matthews (yuck), only to the extent of noting that, so far, no Reaganesque candidate has emerged who can unite the party and give it a strong direction - down to the wobblies in Congress - who have lost their way. I keep hoping there's a candidate out there who will in affect, kick the door down and say, "Okay, play time is over. Now, here's what we're going to do..." Fred?
I don't get it
January 17, 2008 - 12:50 ET by landsharkI'm assuming that he was being funny - as only Matthews can be, which is to say not at all - but I just don't see where the joke is.
If he actually thought he was being insightful, well that's just sad.
What part
January 17, 2008 - 13:07 ET by cvgbuckeyeWhat part of that goes over your heads, if not all?
Let me turn it around a little and see if the objectional reactions are warranted.
1. Obama is the Radical Muslim wing of the democrat party and a proponent of exterminating all white people.
2. Hillary is the Nazi wing of the democrat party who espouses dismantling the family structure and taking children away from the parents to be raised by the community (neighborhood).
3. Edwards is the communist wing of the democrat party who is for killing all the babies a moment before birth.
4. Chris Matthews is the anti-Protestant wing of the democrat party and a forerunner of the anti-Christ crying out in the desert.
What reaction do you think that Bill Kristol would get if he went on Bill O'Reilly with this?
One more thing. I have heard some bits and pieces of a poll taken by Sacred Heart College (or something like that) that is creating quite a stir with their results about America's opinions about the news media. Has anyone heard any details about this?
discussed a few days ago
January 17, 2008 - 13:40 ET by SouthJersey1953The poll that I belieive you are talking about was discussed here a few days ago.....(do a search....I don't have time to find it for you).
It addressed the fact that most Americans' do NOT trust the MSM
It's not Right vs. Left; it is Right vs. Wrong
Matthews
January 17, 2008 - 13:20 ET by iveseenitallMatthews is what he is--- an ignorant partisan who represents almost all the MSM. I remember the day I discovered that Peter Jennings was a high school drop out. It may be different today, but I am part of Jenning's generation and I recall what most people thought of high school dropouts back then. Yet millions of people listentened to that moron for decades. (Maybe because the MSM kept it so quiet). The "liberals" crawl like roaches on the boob- tube every night and so many sheep are taken in by them. Sad.
NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"
Someone may want to inform
January 17, 2008 - 13:27 ET by TESomeone may want to inform the Tonight Show and Jay Leno that no one knows who the hell Chris Matthews is. His show attracts a humiliating few hundred thousand viewers. I'd be surprised if one out of ten Tonight Show viewers know who the hell Chris Matthews is, and not a single one of them gives a damn once they discover who he is.
I know Matthews full well.
January 17, 2008 - 13:46 ET by Chris NormanI know Matthews full well. However, I'm embarassed to confess that I don't know a lot of the younger actors and entertainers who appear on The Tonite Show. :)
Chrissy is just trying to
January 17, 2008 - 13:46 ET by DaBirdChrissy is just trying to keep up with his new boss Olbermann. "Who can be more controversial?" They've decided to go the route of shock-jock. With the thinking that maybe people will tune in to "see what they are going to say next". Which would work if it was just everyday mundane subjects. But when they are attacking us directly as repuclican/conservatives, we don't want to hear what they are going to say next. They are basically only feeding the trolls what they want to hear. Good luck with that MSNBC.
Analogies R Us
January 17, 2008 - 15:05 ET by pilsenerMatthews has recently been on a search for a signature schtick.
Hardball now has movie references every night - not always apt, not always movies anyone else saw - but designed to make Matthews more "hip" or something.
Having Dan Rather on his Sunday morning show has also got Matthews using Rather-like analogies. "like the clams in the chowder"
His continuing favorite comparisons are to historical or political figures (a rasputin-like intensity).
All of the above combined with Matthews adoration of the sound his own voice creates some of the most nonsensical question set-ups imaginable. But his guests seem happy not to mock him, no matter how off-the-wall the reference or question.
us vs. them
January 17, 2008 - 15:55 ET by NCConservative"...who else they got over there? And uh, Rudy Giuliani. And then they got Romney, the Kurd. I mean, they're all over the place. Who's gonna unite them?"
Not surprising at all that he keeps referring to the R's as "they" and "them," but it is very telling.
So much for impartiality.
