The Washington Post can't find a liberal label anywhere (merely the word "activist") to describe the boutique-left agenda of the Arlington (Virginia) County Board. They're "Targeting Smoking, Trans Fats, and Cars," says the Post headline on Kirstin Downey's story. How anti-car are they?
Board member Jay Fisette (D) will lead Arlington's effort to promote what Tejada called a "car-free diet." Fisette displayed a T-shirt with the slogan, "I lost 2,000 pounds in one day," and referred people to a county Web site, http://www.carfreediet.com, which calculates how much money people could save by getting rid of their car and how much weight they could lose.
Fisette also plans to promote a regional bike-sharing program, as some European cities have done.
Car-free diet? Who's proposed eating a car?
Fisette is usually celebrated by Post reporters for being openly gay.

DC Metro
January 2, 2008 - 10:26 ET by RotorcraftJOEThere are not that many Metro stations that go over into Arlington. Also, Arlington is filled with rich liberal types. I can't possibly see them giving up there cars. Also, most of Arlington is such that you can't just leave your house and walk to anything. I'd love to use my car less, since I do like walking to things, but the DC area needs to expand the rail system to have more stops in more areas. The bus system is pretty comprehensive, but it takes a long time to get where you want to go, and if you're not careful which bus you're on, you could be stuck next to some unsavory characters.
That is wonderful. I love
January 2, 2008 - 10:32 ET by amberThat is wonderful. I love it when people with no children, who live in 60+ degree weather almost year round tell us we need to ride a bike or drive a 2 seater. I have 3 children so we drive a 3/4 ton diesel crew cab long box pickup. It is our only vehicle, other than the 64 dart that does not get driven. How many vehicles do these green idiots own? How am I going to bike my 3 children to town, 15 miles away? It is nine below zero (feels like 20 below zero) today, should my husband stay home from work until spring? Is it really safe for him to ride a bike to work, again, 15 miles away? This is not Europe, we are spread out, towns are not outside of every door, families do not live within 20 miles (mine are 100+ miles away, do I ride a bike there too?).
Enjoy the ride
January 2, 2008 - 10:40 ET by Mulligan22Since it's about 25 degrees today and the wind is blowing about 20 mph I hope those "car free" fools enjoy their bike ride.
The weather right now in
January 2, 2008 - 10:58 ET by RackieThe weather right now in Arlington, VA. is a bit challenging for bikin' or walkin'.
29 degrees and a "Feels Like" frosty 14 degrees.
But y'all go ahead and take that pledge and show the rest of us how it's done.
Farting
January 2, 2008 - 11:02 ET by American TaxpayerGreat idea but it does not go far enough, what about other modern inventions that need to be scraped as well. Al Gore is right, everything is bad and we are all going to die. Toilets waste water, electricity is bad, even farting releases gases into the atmosphere that are 25 times worse than CO2. We should all put a bone through our noses move into a cave and run around naked. Civilatation is very bad thank God the rocket scientist's at the Arlington county board warned us before it is too late.
I tried that, but the bone
January 2, 2008 - 11:11 ET by Ruths husband BenI tried that, but the bone got all yicky and it was cold in my cave, and the bats complained so much I put my pants back on.

Ban Cars
January 2, 2008 - 11:45 ET by allanfI don't live in Arlington, Viginia. But I think it would be a great thing of Comarade Jay Fisette succeeded in baning cars totally from the town. I'd love to see what it does to home prices, local businesses, tax revenues, and the public demeanor.
Conservatives believe the free market imposes natural restrictions on the consumption of oil. There is no shortage of carbon based fuels in the world and their availability is governed by the cost of exploiting these alternatives. Liberals believe the government is a better regulator of the market than market forces.
So let's ban cars in Arlington. Go for it. You will receive praise from journalists and fawning adoration from the New York Times. I can see a Times editorial board member becoming inspired to write of Arlington as she is squired about New York in her limo.
Get rid of those pesky
January 2, 2008 - 11:54 ET by bassndudeGet rid of those pesky lawnmowers to. And motorcycles, gas powered weedeaters and chain saws. Might as well scrap electric to. After all, it would reduce the amount of over all polution in the air. And those cows! Move them all out of the area. All that methane.
Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!
The people in DC could lose
January 2, 2008 - 12:06 ET by Chris NormanThe people in DC could lose a couple pounds a day and three or four on Sundays by cancelling the Washington Post - and save some wonderful trees, to boot - how's that for going Green?
For those who are
January 2, 2008 - 14:45 ET by Gary P JacksonFor those who are interested, there is SEMA, the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association, and more importantly the SEMA Action Network (SAN).
SEMA, which was once call the Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association, is a lobby group that represents every major specialty part manufacturer, as well as car enthusiasts everywhere.
Their mission is to make sure the hobbyist is able to enjoy the sport. They also lobby to make sure government doesn't put undue restrictions and legislation on new cars.
Anyhow, membership in SAN is free, and as a member, you will be informed anytime bad legislation comes up, either local or national. You can sign up at:

These moronic bureaucrats
January 2, 2008 - 15:41 ET by greenfairieThese moronic bureaucrats do not have the experience of having to lug small children around or the "fun" of being a young female walking alone at night without even a gun to protect herself (if these libs had their way).
Wish I could
January 2, 2008 - 16:59 ET by NiftySwellI am one of those nuts who used to ride my bike everywhere in CO even in the snow then I moved to the Richmond area...quickest way to die here is to leave the safety of your vehicle. Every other day a story is on the news of how a pedestrian or biker got run over...it appears to be a sport here. There isnt even so much as a shoulder on most of the streets. You cannot walk across a parking lot without having someone aim at you with their vehicle, dont assume you have the right of way as a pedestrian here, even the police are aggressive drivers- they typically drive in the fast lane on the highway on I- 295 and I-95 15 to 20 over the speed limit quite often tailgating...looking for speeders. As a former cop out west it would have meant my badge to drive that way and citizens would line up to serve me too! Here they are so set in their ways and have so few people move in that it is just expected that cops speed and politicians steal- Google how many Richmond city council members are in jail...sidetrack (sorry)
Every time I see one of these stories, I think about how these nanny libs are telling other people how to live their lives without any concept of what goes on anywhere else. People commute, people work nightshift, people use their cars for work, people carpool, people shop, yet they believe we all should be able put our 2.3 kids on buses and trains to soccer practice.
I've been doing this for two years now
January 2, 2008 - 17:57 ET by UndercoverConservativeit's called a motorcycle-as car free as I need to be. Gets better real world mileage than a Prius even when I'm at politically-incorrect speeds.
http://www.motorcycl...
I put the hard trunk on mine, and it's been my daily work commuter since I bought it in March. Before that, it was an old 600cc Kawasaki Ninja.
better emissions, better real world mileage, less resources used in manufacture-superior to hybrids in every way.
And no, I ain't pedaling. That's the mantra of Control Freaks who want to keep their population in easily controlled urban centers. or the rich who can afford property in those same urban centers...
And I have a nice old Dodge Shelby Daytona (33 mpg real world) when I need to haul passengers or during the whole two weeks of unrideable weather-bought used so right there I recycled over a thousand pounds of various materials, kept 'em out of landfills...plus I didn't burn tons of material to make a "new" car.
Is there anyone out there who'd like to advise in how I could do a Newsbusters type blog that specifically goes after the Green scam industry? I want to call it "I got your Green, right here!". Something that specifically counters alternative fuel scams but promotes any real alternative fuel products, cracks down on bad sellers of snake oil, debunks the myths of "hybrids", etc..
This is hilarious!
January 2, 2008 - 18:19 ET by blackngoldfanThe funniest thing about this is that they're trying to fight "global warming", but the more bikes you put on the streets requires more active chemical plants to produce all of the paints, plastics, enamels, and rubber that goes into a bike! Even if they choose to walk, the rubber and plastics in shoes get produced in chemical plants! That's the equivalent of green-peas chugging up the Mississippi river in a diesel guzzling tug boat to protest my oil refinery (a few years back).
Send them back?
January 2, 2008 - 19:38 ET by justwingingitVolkswagen is in the process of moving their US headquarters to Arlington, VA. The move was even promoted with a bit of money from the local government. That does not seem very "anti-car." As Rush says "follow the money."
Nonsense
January 2, 2008 - 20:22 ET by SeptemberBoard member Jay Fisette (D) will lead Arlington's effort to promote what Tejada called a "car-free diet."
Well isn't that special?
Just sent them a comment noting how hilarious their car-free site is. Gotta laugh. They are so wanting to feel genuinely useful.
What a freakin' luxury to be able to give up your car! I would love to dump the insurance premiums, maintenance, fuel and registration and licensing costs but then I'd be in the local homeless shelter filling out welfare forms.
Have to hand it to them for their immaturity.
Car free is fine if you can manage it
January 3, 2008 - 10:12 ET by GrannyGrump42I teach English in Korea, from one year-long contract to the next. And I do love my car-free Korean living. No insurance, no oil changes, no checking the tires. I ride my bike to work and shopping, walk to church and the movies, and use the bus when I go out with friends. Since I live in a heavily-populated area near Seoul, this is very doable.
Yeah, it's cold now, but I live about two miles from work so I probably spend about the same amount of time outside I'd spend gassing up, putting air in the tires, etc. Bike, feet, and a transit pass are wonderful. In Bucheon, South Korea.
That said, when I'm back to the US, my savings from not having a car in Korea will go to buy a car, because my family lives in a rural area with no public transit. It's just not feasable.
Everybody needs to make the choice based on their own needs.
Hm.... sounds like what the libs say about abortion. How come "Let each person make her own choice" is okay when you apply it to killing babies, but not when you apply it to car ownership?
