Some journalists are so confident that we're already cooked by global warming that they're scolding ignorant Americans in advance for all the now-unpreventable doom that's coming our way. Newsweek's Sharon Begley rings in the new year by shaking her head at the Stupid, Soon to Be Overheated Majority and how we'll have to adapt to being cooked:
As scientists and policy types figure out what changes will be necessary to cope with global warming, it's obvious that massive sea walls will be required to hold back rising oceans, that enormous new reservoirs will be needed to cope with the alternating droughts and deluges that many regions will suffer and that a crash program to develop heat- and drought-resistant crops would be a good idea if people are to keep eating....
It's such a polite, unthreatening word: "adapt." The kind of thing you do as you roll with the punches or keep a stiff upper lip, modifying your behavior to a new situation. But as it will be used in 2008, adaptation is a euphemism for widespread, expensive changes that will be needed to cope with climate change. Although some adaptations will be modest and low tech, such as cities' establishing cooling centers to shelter residents during heat waves, others will require such herculean efforts and be so costly that we'll look back on the era beginning in 1988, when credible warnings of climate change reached critical mass, and wonder why we were so stupid as to blow the chance to keep global warming to nothing more extreme than a few more mild days in March.
I'd love to see Begley face the idea that news magazines and other scientific sages saw the opposite weather threat in the 1970s. As R. Warren Anderson and Dan Gainor laid out in the Business and Media Institute report Fire and Ice:
Weather warnings in the ’70s from “reputable researchers” worried policy-makers so much that scientists at a National Academy of Sciences meeting “proposed the evacuation of some six million people” from parts of Africa, reported the Times on Dec. 29, 1974.
That article went on to tell of the costly and unnecessary plans of the old Soviet Union. It diverted time from Cold War activities to scheme about diverting the coming cold front.
It had plans to reroute “large Siberian rivers, melting Arctic ice and damming the Bering Strait” to help warm the “frigid fringes of the Soviet Union.”
Newsweek’s 1975 article “The Cooling World” noted climatologists’ admission that “solutions” to global cooling “such as melting the arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting arctic rivers,” could result in more problems than they would solve.

December 31, 2007 - 15:59 ET by scamoramaOne thing I have noticed about a lot of Doom-Mongers is that they are not simply predicting catastrophe; they are hoping for it.
Nothing would please them more than to be able to look at the Great Unwashed and say, "I told you so!", thus proving once and for all eternity their superiority.

So in essence Ms. Unhappy is saying that in 1988 we should have done everything that Global Warming believers NOW say we must do. How can that be? I thought only till recently that "concensus" had been reached and that "the debate is over." What were these "credible warnings of climate change" in 1988 and what did Newsweek report on it back then? Are we supposed to act on any collection of "credible warnings" the scientific community dishes out?
What a bunch of hooey. As noted by others here, in the mid-70's Newsweek (and others) claimed "credible warnings" of a Global Cooling setting in. Imagine the stories now if we had actually attempted to melt the polar caps by covering them with pure carbon soot as suggested in Newsweek's '70s articles.
And notice Ms Unhappy uses the new "consensus" word, "climate change," so that hot, cold, wet, dry yada yada can be attributed to a supposed warming pattern.

December 31, 2007 - 17:09 ET by Ralph Hansen Ph. But what's really sad is morons like Sharon Begley can't see past the obvious corruption of these so-called scientists who've sold their integrity to keep the global warming gravy train on track.
They fail to acknowledge that temperatures have been flat the past 10 years, and the next solar cycle looks to be one of the weakest in more than a century.
Global cooling is making a comeback here in North Dakota as we head into 2008. We're expecting wind chills of 30 below zero tonight.

Have to try and save us
December 31, 2007 - 17:33 ET by richb313One common tenant of all liberals is they always have to try and save us from something. The latest cause de-celeb of course is Man Made Global Warming. It is the perfect cause for them because the reults won't be around for over 50 to 100 years, that way none of them will still be around to take the blame for being wrong. The threats are all hyped to dooms day type senarios. And the so called science isn't even science at all but rather runaway statistical analysis in a computer model where the input variables are totally made up. No one has any idea how much of anything will be in the atmosphere 10 years from now, how can they even predict it out to 100 years?
I wish those liberals would stop trying to save us from imaginary dangers and instead focus on the real dangers we face as a nation and a people.

AN little poll
December 31, 2007 - 20:38 ET by pbthinkerThere was a little poll, that hardly anyone participated in, in the Palm Beach Post, who are the heroes and villains of climate change. Gore won the villain, in the poll. Some of the comments were pretty telling such as "Gore used a bogus power point presentation......" pretty funny.
What happened, IMHO, is we had a debate on climate change going. Mr. Gore, ever the politician, inserted himself into the debate and decided to make it like campaign 2000. He did the same things, exaggerating as usual, and it finally caught up with him. Now, those who believe man is causing this climate change, have a uphill battle to convince the public there's really a problem. Before Gore, it was a debate that could have gone either way now, most people are prone not to believe man is causing this and Gore is ultimately responsible for that.

December 31, 2007 - 21:21 ET by NonanonLast night 60 Minutes had a segment on the forest fires that happened this year and how big they were. I figured Pelley would blame GW from the beginning, but he actually reported how for 100 years or so we have been putting fires out as soon as we could and that had caused so much fuel to be available for much bigger fires. It looked as if it would be a decent report but then he took the turn to how the fires were only going to get worse due to GW and how there may not be any forests survive in the future. But he never bothered to stray off that political path to think of any other angle to the story, such as if the climate turns rainy or wet, the fuel won't burn as hot, or how once the fuel is burned, it won't be available again and then fires can be allowed to burn as God intended and clean up the forest floor with much less intense fires. Nor was there any trek into what clearing out could be done to adjust for the previous wrong way of dealing with fires.
I didn't hear him blame the climate change on humans, but it was implied. The firefighter he was using in the report said everyone on the firelines truly believes in GW and has for years. It just kind of ended with no hope for anything good in the future.
Apocolyptarian: Newsweek's Sharon Begley
January 1, 2008 - 09:56 ET by Guy Arthur ThomasThere is in our society a kind of person found in both liberal and conservative bodies that are philosophically identified as "Apocolyptarians". While currently the Cult of Global Warmingism seems to be attracting those with such arrogantly based thinking, it certainly is not exclusive. However, at this time the Cult of Global Warmingism is the predominant group of "Apocolyptarians" influencing social and political beliefs.
"Apocolyptarians" are generally excited about prophecies of doom. While they will tell you they are not, in truth they are because it serves as a source of self-righteous seperation and superiority from and above others. They are the more enlightened if not Messianic in their ego.
Further, the "Apocolyptarian" actually wants apocolyptic events to occur. Of course, because their mentality is based in arrogance they never really believe they will suffer as others because they cannot view themselves as recipeints of the divine or karma based apocolyptic punishment.
Their want of this has in view the destruction of legitimate powers, legitimate authority and legitimate social structure. The "Apocolyptarian" is fueled by the hope and entertained by the idea that such things will be destroyed and rightly punished for not heeding their righteous prophecy of doom. Hence they can, in and of themselves and imaginarily before God, claim the greatest virtue since in their greatness they saw what others couldn't and wouldn't and they warned others.
But in truth, the "Apocolyptarian" is at best an anti-social misfit, generally a narcissitic and neurotic social nuissance and too often delusional about their degree of importance and enlightenment if not borderline psychotic.
This is not, of course, to challenge or compare with genuine Biblical prophecies of apocolyptic events, But then for "Apocolyptarians" distinctions between that which is genuinely Divine in source and that which is in their own mind has little if any seperation.
Whether in the form of Al Gore with highly esteemed social credentials, in the form of an anti-feminie self-hating appearance of Begley or the posturing intellectuals who manage to preserve their appearance in hopes of a few morsels of attention while bowing to the idol of self such as Dowd, Huffington or DiCaprio, in the end "Apocolyptarians" are those who hopes are found in rebellion toward legitimate order and authority.
Shut up and blog! If you claim to be a conservative, please don't disgrace yourself and conservatism by thinking and arguing like a liberal. Go Rudy!
Well, gee, Sharon, seeing
January 1, 2008 - 14:40 ET by MikeBWell, gee, Sharon, seeing as the sea level rise is in the range of one to two millimeters per year, you have about ten thousand years to construct those sea walls you think we need. The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
I suppose, since warming is bad, we need to go back to the ideal climate when Canada and the northern United States were covered by a mile thick glacier. How much food gets grown then, Sharon? It's kinda hard to grow Iowa corn or Kansas wheat under five thousand feet of ice.
You twit! Climate has been changing constantly since the planet coalesced. For much of geologic history the planet has been warmer that it is today. The great biodiversity we have today is because of the warmer climate. Climate changed before Man appeared on the planet, has continued to change since, and will continue to change after we disappear. Human activity did not, does not, nor will not cause climate to change either warmer or cooler. Somebody smack that broad up alongside the head with a clue by four.
