CNN's Sam Feist Attacks Michelle Malkin As A Fox Stalking Horse

Photo of Tim Graham.

The St. Petersburg Times, the "hometown newspaper" for the CNN-YouTube Republican debate, published an interesting story on CNN’s reactions to conservative criticism. Their list of excuses was extensive, and ridiculous. As far as conservatives are concerned, CNN has two choices: either they were extremely cynical in knowingly placing Democratic supporters into a Republican debate, or they were extremely unprofessional in failing to do five minutes of work to prevent the publicity fiasco of allowing Hillary supporters to try and embarrass her opponents on national TV.

CNN is responding by attacking their critics (Michelle Malkin by name) for being stalking horses for Fox News. In their report, Wes Alison and Eric Deggans asked if there wasn’t enough time for vetting (when they’ve been receiving questions for three months?):

And did CNN's method for choosing questions, in which the 60 to 70 available queries were finalized in the 24 hours before the debate, make it impossible for the channel to fully vet any questioners for ties to Democratic campaigns?

CNN's political director Sam Feist said the channel didn't really investigate the political leanings of any questioners, focusing more on the questions they asked.

Feist is offering a bogus defense. Imagine the difference between an average Joe asking Hillary about firing Billy Dale from the White House Travel Office and then subjecting him to a long trial process in which he was acquitted in two hours. Then ask if the question would have more impact if the questioner were Billy Dale. That's why the gay general's question had more impact than if it was asked by Sally in Tampa.

The obvious rebuttal to this is: you narrowed the field down to 33 questions, and you allowed just a few of the questioners to ask press the contenders from the audience for more dramatic impact. Couldn’t you just screen the questioners who appeared live in the audience? But Feist was trying to say it wasn’t CNN’s fault there was a Hillary plant in Gen. Keith Kerr, and they didn’t even pay the man’s way:

Kerr told CNN that he had not thought to tell the network about allowing his name to be included on Clinton's steering committees and that he was speaking for himself. Clinton's campaign also denied any involvement with the incident. The retired general was among several questioners invited to the debate by Google; their transportation and lodging was not paid for by CNN, Feist said.

"We didn't have an ideological litmus test for people," Feist said, noting that one prominent CNN critic, conservative pundit Michelle Malkin, also works as a contributor for rival Fox News Channel. "I'm comfortable with the questions, and I'm comfortable with the process."

So not only does Feist think he doesn’t need to do "ideological litmus tests" for questioners, then he turns around and accuses his critics of being stalking horses for Fox News. Is this the way for CNN to build rapport with potential Republican viewers? Is this the way CNN builds a reputation for professionalism and fairness and receptiveness to public complaints? Feist’s answers are an embarrassment to CNN.

Reporters ought to remember the words that Anderson Cooper began the debate with, words that try to create the illusion that "the people" are picking the questions, when actually, CNN is picking needles out of a haystack, in some cases needles that look like they hope to embarrass Republicans, like the gay Hillary-supporting general.

Over the next two hours, the eight Republican candidates for president will be questioned here on this stage by you, Americans who submitted video questions to us through the Web site YouTube. Now, all the questions tonight come from you.

That gives the viewers at home a strong impression that these people are the authentic American grass roots, not Astroturf activists with cynical agendas. (Remember how CNN and others suggested that opposition to Hillary's health plan in 1993 and 1994 was more "Astroturf" than grass roots? It's time to turn the spotlight around on CNN's Astroturfing techniques.)

Before the debate, Deggans interviewed Anderson Cooper, and Cooper played up the myth that the viewers are making all the decisions of what gets asked:

Q: How is this debate going to be different than the Democratic debate, based on what you learned from the first time around?

A: I think we're going to have a lot more questions to choose from. We had some 3,000 at the final count last time. I think we're already at the 3,000 mark, and we saw a flood of questions coming in the last couple of days last time. So I wouldn't be surprised if we got above 5,000 this time, which is fantastic. It's sort of a bottom-up process. We let the questions and the general tone and the quantity of questions on any given subject sort of determine how much time we spent on any given subject. So it really does come from the viewers. They are the ones deciding which topics get the most focus.

The newspapers bought that spin line. (See the Houston Chronicle's headline: "Viewers Deciding GOP Debate Tactics.") In fact, the more questions CNN receives from the public, the more people they are excluding, and the more editorial control they are exercising.

Skepticism should apply to Cooper's assertion. Was there a question to Republicans if they accepted literally every word in the Bible because 600 people wanted that asked? Or did CNN pluck that out because it was interesting? Were there 600 people who wanted to ask Rudy Giuliani about New York City paying for the security outside his mistress's house? They made decisions that were not based on the viewers at home. They were making their own decisions about what would spice things up -- and maybe give Republicans some indigestion.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't Michele tell Fox to stuff it after she got pissed at Geraldo?

Michelle and Fox

Rick, Michelle is still a contributor to FNC, just not on O'Reily or anywhere Geraldo might be. Her beef with Geraldo is well deserved IMHO.

Stalking horses ?

IS this yet another CNN lack of Research ?........Horses eat Grass, they don't "Stalk" anything.

Lions, Wolves, Eagles, now they "Stalk" prey......

Besides, the whold Web lit up on CNN after the Debates, all Michelle or anyone else had to do was to sit by and watch the "web noise" get louder.

Sorry CNN, you can't pin this one on any "one" person, except CNN.

}}---> William Bennett

I think Bill Bennett called this one early didn't he?

CNN BUSTED...

Yep, & Bennent did so on LIVE TV, nothing could really be done to be ready for that.

Sam Feist & CNN can say what he wants about Michelle Malkin, she busted them dead to right. She just followed Rosie's advice to "google it", & presto. All of these so called undecided objective questioners are not so undecided or obective.

If Feist really gave a damn about this, it would'nt happen. Anderson Cooper seemed upset it happened because I believe he does try to be a stand up guy, & it also made him look bad since he was the host. I don't think he would be in on using plants. Feist seems upset that CNN got caught, since Michelle Malkin took the lead after Bennent first mentioned it, he's throwing a fit, he's projecting.

The Horse I had in Texas wouldn't Stalk anything.....she was scared of cows....I found that out when I tried to move a calf from one pen to another, and hook the rope on the Saddle horn......that was one spooked Horse, I had to get off the mare and lead her and the Calf on the rope to the desired destination.

I'd like to put some CNN guys on a horse.....a wild "stalking" horse.

The definitions above on "A horse trained to conceal the hunter while stalking"...means to me, the Hunter is Stalking, the Horse is trained for "concealment" (B. above).....now that matches Cnn's profile..concealment.   CNN....Concealed News Network.

In any event, "I is one dude" the "stalking horse" comment didn't reach or connect, and I used to own/ride horses.  Real Texans know there ain't no stalking horses.

wait a minute

They made the final decision 24 hours in advance? They contacted Kerr one day before the debate, flew him to Florida on a last minute flight, and arranged for him to sit in the audience - and no one thought to even attempt a simple disclaimer to assure he had no hidden agenda.

Why can't CNN just come out and say they messed up? All this scrambling to cover themselves is making it worse. By lashing out at Michelle for "tattling" on them, they look like whiners and she gets more mileage out of the story.

They knew he was there

CNN is trying to suggest that the general did this entirely on his own, and that they didn't pay his way. It makes no difference. They knew he was there. That alone is enough to discredit their defense. They deliberately picked him out of the audience. It was also clear that the general had a rehearsed answer to the question "did you get the answer you wanted?" That reveals that CNN had pre-planned Anderson Cooper's dialogue with him.

CNN is also now playing the classic ad hominem argument: the criticism against us must be false because it's coming from a rival. That's like a defense lawyer arguing that the DNA evidence against his client must be false because it's being presented by the prosecution.

CNN is quickly compiling evidence of bias and stupidity. I'm sure their lawyers are begging them to just stop talking!

They may have made the final

They may have made the final decision 24 hours before the debate, but they didn't decide from 5,000+ videos 24 hours before the debate. They went through a selection process over a long period of time, and made multiple decisions during that time. The final decision, I would guess, was not what questions to use, but what order to do them in as to ensure the ones that made the points they wanted to have made were sure not to get cut due to time.

typical guilty tactic

trying to attack the credibility of the person making the accusation or pointing out the hypocrisy.

The point is that Michelle was able to find, in a short time, disturbing connections to Democratic/Liberal groups or causes for a significant % of the questioners of the GOP nominee candidates. If CNN had done any due dilligence at all they would have found them as well and been able to pick a different questioner with the same basic question. After all they got over 5000 submissions, right?

Isn't it a credit to FOX News Network that someone they use as an occasional contributer is so good at investigative research and reporting? CNN seems to think that if a journalist from another network points out an error or a bias, it isn't valid. Does that mean that their reports on the Dan Rather memo-gate scandle are not valid because they are a different network than CBS?

What shameless hypocrisy!

Michelle

Someone else made the point that Michelle was not the first one on it. Bill Bennett brought it up on CNN's own airtime in less than an hour.

Why are they attacking Michelle for doing this? That's kinda the point of being a rival. No one at CNN was fixing to break it.

Someone at National Review online caught it, and sent it to BB. MM ran with it, and broke a network after that. Nice.

Fox in the Henhouse?

"attacking their critics (Michelle Malkin by name) for being stalking horses for Fox News"

When all else fails, blame Fox News.  It had nothing to do with Fox... they're just pissed that MM is 10 times smarter than they are.  (She has severed ties with Fox and they know it.)  Actually, this was caught by a number of bloggers which is proof that CNN knew exactly what they were doing.  It's funny how no Republican plants showed up in the democrat debate.

My Theory on CNN plantgate.........entertainment

I think CNN had too much at stake on the Debate, as they have to know about their ratings.....CNN had to Orchestrate the Debate, they had to "produce" via their producers a TV show for consumption...with NO SURPRISES.

Anyone ever watch a CSPAN Iowa Town meeting.....boring...boring....the candidates don't come across as entertaining, the audience is non dynamic, there is NO Drama....thus, CNN calls out for the Scripted debate that includes LOTS of DRAMA, and non-boring questions....

They over medicated the debates in the name of "entertainment"......they went a producer too far.....they over Dramatized in the name of ratings....CNN didn't depend on the Candidates to carry the show.

Enter Scripted plants.

"6-0 against quality teams.

"6-0 against quality teams. Go Heels!"

Yes, those well-known, quality college power-house teams like:

*Iona: 0-6

*S.Carolina State: 1-5

*Old Dominion: 3-4

Maybe they'll actually get around to playing a top 20 team before February 6, though, by the look of their schedule, that's doubtful.

I hope your political views are less delusional than your Tarheel ones. :)

rolls eyes

Nice way to cherry pick their schedule by highlighting the low-end teams and ignoring the big wins.

They beat tOSU and BYU(21) without their starting point guard. You can look at any team and point to easy victories. That really isn't fair and you know it.

CNN

There is little doubt, in my mind at least, that a lot of people at CNN participated in planting these questions, in the debate.  Flying the General in from California should have been a clue to someone.

The beauty of this is, the Republicans survived a debate, that was purposely stacked against them.  The did a credible job answering the questions, all of the questions.  Now, where are the Democrats, who are afraid to debate on Fox News.  I'm sure they wouldn't have been treated this poorly on Fox and, if they were, they would have cried all over the place and their media wing would have had a relentless parade of people screaming about how unethical Fox was.  What happens when CNN does it?  Nothing, of course.

CNN has managed to prove to people that the Republicans are not far off base, calling them the Clinton News Network.  If they were a real news organization, they'd be ashamed. Somehow, I doubt that thought has never entered their mind.
