Did Feminist Katie Couric Exploit Men to Climb the Ladder to Fame and Fortune?

On Friday, National Review writer Myrna Blyth unwrapped some of the nuggets in the forthcoming Ed Klein biography of Katie Couric, the one the Katie camp is trying to squash, in very Hillaryesque fashion, as "old news." [Klein appeared Monday night on FNC's Hannity & Colmes.] Before she kindly noted that the MRC has piles and piles of examples of Katie's liberal bias, Blyth dished Klein's claims:

In fact, there is not much unexpected here including the portrait of the young Katie as wildly ambitious and manipulative when she was desperately trying to make her dream “of becoming the next Barbara Walters” come true. Though a bit surprising, Couric, who in her prime was always seen as a feminist icon, often relied on relationships with important men to help her in her climb. According to Klein, she had affairs with both a married CNN executive who saved her from being fired a couple of times, and a media spokesman for Metro Dade Police Department who tipped her off on big stories when she was a TV reporter in Miami.

At The Today Show, Katie’s success was primarily engineered by another man, her whiz-kid producer Jeff Zucker, the now president of NBC. The biggest splash in her early career, the serendipitous White House interview with president George H.W. Bush, was among those orchestrated by Zucker. While conducting a live TV tour of the White House with Barbara Bush, the President joined in, probably expecting a few moments of genial chit-chat. Instead “Couric grilled him for nineteen minutes on topics from tax policy to Iran-Contra…Bush seemed frazzled.” Katie’s reputation was thereby established as someone who could handle both morning-TV fluff and more substantive journalism. What was not known at the time was the important role Zucker played; he remained outside parked in a satellite truck in the White House driveway, shouting questions in her ear piece.

Klein also describes Katie’s testy relationships with her Today co-hosts Bryant Gumbel, whom she practically drove off the air, and Matt Lauer, whose air time she tried to cut into, and her jealousy of news reader Ann Curry, whose assignments she restricted. For a long time on-air on Today she was perkiness personified and her popularity grew while off-screen she was dressing down the staff and making enemies of many of her colleagues. Enemies who told Klein, for example, that employees at NBC were so cynical about her lack of compassion for her husband Jay Monahan, who was dying of colon cancer, that they started betting on how long it would take her to capitalize on his death. According to one NBC reporter, “some said 72 hours, others just 24 hours.”

Eek. While the Couric camp might attempt to pick apart the book as anonymously sourced gossip -- and any journalism debate can certainly begin there -- Couric and NBC (and CBS, for that matter) never let that argument stop them from promoting books slandering Republicans like Reagan or Nixon. Paging Kitty Kelley, or Anthony Summers....

Don'y you know?  It's all

Don'y you know?  It's all about cultivating relationships. It's who you know, not what you know. <sarcasm>

In Katies case, its more

In Katies case, its more like who you do, for what they know.

The Reporterette Factor

Except for Barbara Walters claiming she has a big bladder as the reason for her success, does anyone believe these talking head chics don't use their skirts to get ahead?

I know of one local powerhouse of CBS who employed nothing but red headed women with D cup size. I was always mind boggling as I never knew that many red heads were in the world.

WCCO in Minneapolis just had a piece on their blonde bimbo. What was amazing it showed her working beef cattle as she was a down home gal, but when questioned she never corrected the reporter on the difference between steers and bulls.....and boy is there a testicular difference in the 2.

These women all get into this racket, because they are gossips and love attention. A little extra smile, a little extra flirting, a little extra phone call "for information" and they soon got every dufus guy or dyke marked they can play for a lead.

Why do you think Congressmen go nuts when they hit Washington? It is because they all get the flattery treatment all these chics perfect like Katie Couric did learning that her little cheerleader outfit made all the boys do things for her and all the girls want to be her pudgey legged best friend.

That is why I challenged Bill Maher to come clean on all the pedophiles and rapists he knows in the executive end of the propaganda industry as everyone knows who takes vacations to Asia or how that cute assistant got the morning after pill after the boss got her stoned and now she is doing the weekend news.

They all do it and that is why they don't want anyone looking into their immoral lives. Just think about it in how many women these women savage when they are raped by a Kennedy or Clinton???? They never treat it like a big deal is because they use sex as a weapon and grew up in liberal land where guys rape women as part of the sexual interaction between liberal couples.

Goodness Lee Woodruff wrote on Huffington the treatment for sex perverts should be handing out Penthouse and Playboy. She is the wife of brain scuffed ABC anchor Bob Woodruff....those people are not in the least bit normal........so a reporterette whoring herself is not a big deal. NBC might not pay to get interviews, but if you shook enough bed posts you would find interviews were getting more service than a smile.

Ouch

It's extremely overgeneralizing to assert that all female journalists have used their wiles (or "skirts") to get ahead. I would never claim that. In Couric's specific case, you can say that while it should be obvious to anyone that Jeff Zucker at NBC was instrumental to her rise, it's also obvious that during their era at Today, the show was often dominant in the ratings, a big profitable success, and so the show was also instrumental to Zucker's rise up the ladder at NBC.

As Klein (and nearly everyone else) acknowledges, Couric had morning-show chops and perky appeal. But it's also strongly emerged in the last decade or so that success went strongly to her head. Couric is successful and famous enough to deserve a biography. I'm not sure she deserves all of the stories that Klein is dishing, or if they're all 100 percent true. But it is interesting to see the shoe on the other foot. Media figures can dish out the dirt, but they're not so great at taking it.

Oy, I don't want to know

Oy, I don't want to know what Olbermann has been doing to Phil Griffin in order to stay on the air.

Or maybe what Griffin is doing to Olbermann?

In any case, let's just move on.

Ohhhh... I get it now...

I just knew it wasn't simply her sparkling personality, winning smile and obvious intelligence. There had to be something more to her status as a major talking head pulling down millions a year.

All the aspiring young female journalists should take note. This is what it takes to make it to the top.

Happy Trails...

I think Olbermann has been

I think Olbermann has been "doing" Phil Griffen.

Katie’s secret of success?

Climb the ladder of  fame and fortune by having the executives climb you.

And they say women are the weaker sex. Not when all they have to do is snap their thong and make a man turn into a quivering mass of testosterone and forget he has a family.

Katie, down girl.

You mean to say Katie climbed up the ladder by going down first?

I'm shocked at this Max Escher image.

Liberalism is a convenient lie.

Couric

No wonder MSM was never to bothered by Clinton's filandering and womenizing...when the ones watchdogging are doing the same thing, what's the big deal?

Well, I'm one of the few where it matters to me in both my personal life and those around me, as well as the politicians and celebrity figures. I don't care typically what they do, but don't tell me, its no big deal to try to minimize it and make it "ok". Its simply not "ok".
