WaPo: Hey, Bailout Snivelers: Hush. You Don't Need It.

  • Bookmark and Share

Hush all you sniveling bailout hating troublemakers. Just shut up, you don't need the money. That is the message from Washington Post personal finance commentator Michelle Singletary.

In his first address to a joint session of Congress, President Obama declared that he was going to "speak frankly and directly."

That's what I want to do as well. I want to speak frankly and directly to the many people who have written to me complaining that they aren't directly benefiting from the federal government's efforts to resuscitate our gasping economy.

The sniveling sentiments of these people come down to one question: "What about me?"

It appears that Singletary has an axe to grind. Apparently she sees the same sniveling sentiments across the country and wants to shut them up before they sour the President's bailout efforts.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

"We have lived through an era where, too often, short-term gains were prized over long-term prosperity," Obama said.

I understand that people who did the right thing are frustrated. They saved. They scrimped. They crunched the numbers and bought homes they could afford long term.

I understand their need to have someone pat them on the back.

So consider this your pat.

But I'm getting increasingly weary of people carping that they aren't getting a piece of the billions of dollars in debt the federal government is amassing to try to dam up this economic mudslide.

Thankfully she understaaaands, she feels your pain, your carping frustration. But she is weary of all you complainers. Hush it.

For a personal finance expert I find it intriguing that she makes these claims. I actually thought that people in her profession were supposed to preach the dangers of over extending and praise the acts of responsible spending, saving and investing. But not this time around.

What is it about the government's bailout plan that spells long term prosperity? I wonder because commentators like Singletary enjoy dipping into President Obama's speech and use such phrases like confetti; as if they provide some validity to their point. Yet I fail to see the point and they fail to explain what they mean when they say "short-term gains were prized over long-term prosperity"? How is massive deficit spending going to ensure long-term prosperity? Why doesn't Michelle Singletary, personal finance expert, explain this one to all us complainers instead of using it for an anchor in her article?

Not insulted enough? Singletary was just getting started; you big baby.

These people are suffering from what I call "WAM Syndrome" or "What About Me?" disease.

My children have WAM. I see them looking as I pour juice or cut a piece of pie. They watch closely to see whether their siblings get more. If I give one child a little extra of something, the other two pout and whimper, "What about me?"

But I expect this from children. They often don't understand that sometimes one person -- whether he or she deserves it or not -- will get more. They can't comprehend that life isn't fair.

Really, life isn't fair? But isn't that what all this class envy and bullying is about; making life fair for everyone except those that played by the rules?

Mind you that Michelle Singletary claims that she is using the same kind of frank and direct talk that President Obama uses. Perhaps that is the takeaway as she tells you that you don't need the tax break, you don't need a bailout. Stop whining.

Am I upset that my home value has dropped? You betcha.

However, why are you grousing that you aren't getting money or a tax break if you don't truly need the help?

This is the kind of presumptuous rubbish that is designed to guilt you into falling in line, getting with the program. And she justifies it one more time by dipping once again into words spoken by President Obama.

If you're susceptible to WAM Syndrome, the cure is to be thankful for what you have and to have compassion for those who are hurting. Think of all the personal agony or broken marriages or stress that accompanies the threat of foreclosure.

Obama called on us all to make the concerns of others our cause.

"If you haven't been personally affected by this recession, you probably know someone who has -- a friend, a neighbor, a member of your family," Obama said during his speech.

Okay, so you're not getting bailed out. But the reward for doing right when others didn't is that you're living better than they are. So stop whining.

Stop whining you money grubbing, grousing, carping, childish, what about me diseased, WAM syndrome laden, sniveling, responsible capitalist. Hush.

My message to her...

Go to Hell Lady!

"I hope he fails too"

yeah

She says we don't need it, but she's too STUPID to realize they're going to take it FROM ME to give to those who she deigns 'needs it'. Money grubbing, hand in my pocket thief...

I was just waiting for

.....you people are racist!

Kind of funny if you think about it - A Liberal actually complaining about handouts?  I thought that was their party platform!

No, no, no, you have it all

No, no, no, you have it all wrong. She is complaining about handouts to people that ACTUALLY DESERVE THEM, those people have no right to complain. They should just shut up, open their wallets, and hand over everything they own to uncle sam so he can give it to those that are "needy".

AMEN! I'll admit, I have

AMEN!

I'll admit, I have a sort of WAM syndrome, but it's more like, "What about my taxes paying for all this nonsense!"

Republicans believe every day is the 4th of July.  Democrats believe every day is April 15th ~ Ronald Reagan

I don't get it

It Makes no sense!

So they sell this whole stimulus package by saying "It's going to help you!" and "It's going to SAVE YOU!"

and then turn around and say

"Stop bitching about not getting anything, you don't need it..."

I mean, isn't that like a classic case of false advertising?

Considering my 5-yr old kid and his children and his children's children will be paying off all this excess and stupidity I sure as hell am upset nothing is happening for them.

I just don't get it about the current generation in charge. We've always worked hard so that the next generation has better opportunities than us. We risk our lives in the armed forces so that our children can live in freedom. We work our butts off at hard jobs so our kids can grow up healthy and goto college. We sacrifice for the next generation because isn't that in our genes? Isn't sacrificing and taking the hit for the sake of the children, our future, the whole point of having children in the first place?

What we've done is the oppossite. This country has signed our unborn children away to a life of impossible debt for a quick fix. We have chosen the NOW over the future and are really making a horrible example for our children to follow by avoiding any iota of personal responsibility and just passing on the pain to the next generation. Why can't our Lawmakers realize that we need to liquidate all the bad assets and allow the market correction in order to reset the economy?

As Glenn Beck said the other day. We shouldn't be saving this sinking boat, we should be building a new boat for the future.

Oh well... guess my next option is to move back to Vietnam. At least the commies are honest about being commies over there

Hey!  It's the new

Hey!  It's the new Socialist States of Amerika.  In socialism you get what you need not what you want.  And Dear Leader decides what you need so shut up and get back in line.

Telling

IMHO this is very telling.  She sees people complaining about the bailout.  She ASSUMES that they want their piece of pie, because she would (does) feel that way.

The real estate bubble...

has inflated home prices by approx. 100%. The average home price adjusted for inflation should hover around 100,000.00 +/- approx. 20% in normal times. That being the case, homes are now hovering around 170,000.00 and Obama is trying to stop the decline at this point(about 50,000.00) above the high average...the price of homes still has another 50 grand to fall yet...but the gov't is going to interfere and try to prop up the market. This will only delay the market correction...and the eventual pain...so why not let the market work...go through the pain...and let the economy recover? Nobody wants to ever have to go through tough times...even when it HAS TO HAPPEN.

Let's be frank

If a white, conservative Republican were pushing all these proposals, Singetary would be fiercely against them. She's been in the tank for the Messiah since the beginning.

Notfernuttin

BUT HOW THE H$&& DO YOU THINK THOSE PEOPLE GOT THAT WAY?

Just emailed her

I couldn't stand this article either........ I emailed her asking “Why don’t you write an article on why folks are upset instead of insulting those who pay their taxes! “ and “Why don’t you go out to a middle class neighborhoods (not the “wealthy”) and ask them how much their taxes have gone up and their home value has gone down”    This keeps up, us snivelers won’t be paying taxes due to no home values or investments, just employment taxes if we are still lucky enough to have jobs!

They just don't get it!

Those of us who have scrimped and saved, made responsible decisions, and taken care of ourselves are NOT asking for handouts (bailouts), Ms. Singletary. What we want, IMHO, is that our hard-earned money not be doled out to the true WAMmy folks with outstretched hands, most of whom lack the personal responsibility to take care of themselves and their families.

So many folks are being bought out, and it's happening by the billions (of dollars, that is). It's almost unbelieveable to see how corporate America is happily sticking out their grubby little hands and sticking it to those of us who helped grow their businesses with our responsible, hard-earned dollars.

Another ACORN-like example...throw around money to buy future votes! What these WAM-afflicted folks don't realize is that there are no free handouts. They have been bought into governmental slavery and are no longer free. And if (or when) they finally wake up, it will be too late for them. I only hope it won't be too late for the rest of us as well.

The pie

the pie is being divided like this:

Mom and dad worked to earn the pie and mom baked it.

The neighbor took the pie for himself, gave half to the other neighbors who never helped to earn the pie, left the crumbs for the kids and told them they "That's all you need".

When mom and dad ask, "What about me" they're told "you don't deserve any pie, you were selfish to earn it in the first place. I'll be back tomorrow and you better have another pie for me."

Jesus Loves You

Thomas Jefferson

"Any government big enough to give you anything you want is strong enough to take away everything you have"

What she's really saying is

"Be quiet, we'll get our reparations and call them anything we want!" This is nothing more than a power play for a constituency, and if the primary benefactors were whites, she would be up in arms (or whatever liberals use) about this.....the 'evil rich' versus the 'righteous' poor; the power hungry versus the hungy.....such drivel never ceases...

Now we are whiners?

When Phil Gramm said we were a nation of whiners, back before bailouts and stimulus packages, he was roundly chastised. Now the government is in the process of doling out trillions, and she has the audacity to chastise people for complaining they aren't getting a share? How does she know they don't need it?

"They can't comprehend that

"They can't comprehend that life isn't fair."

Wait a cotton-pickin' minute.  What about all of herr obama's talk of "leveling the playing field" and making the tax code "fair for all" and all that crap???  The whole housing mess stemmed from the liberal mantra that everyone deserves a house because THAT'S WHAT'S FAIR!!!!!!!!!!

Conservatives are the only people in this country that truly believe that life is not fair.  Liberals have spent their entire lives b****ing about life not being fair and trying to stick it to people who are actually successful.

I don't want your damn bailout and I don't think that people who made stupid decisions should get one either.

obama's notion of bi-partisanship is telling conservatives to shut up and do what he wants.

I'm going to change her argumant back on her

This might offend some people, for that, I'm sorry.

If we change the argumnet to one of race, then she is arguing that we shouldn't listen to her because she is black. Of course she is going to support her first black president. It is the nay-sayers, in her biased opinion, that should be silenced because they are racist. But she, because of her background, is not.

Now back to the actual subject.

The rewards, that Obama is just instituting,  for doing what is right are that you are now going to be forced to pay for those who didn't do what is right. That will be a future disincentive for anyone to do what is right. Thus causing the economy to furhter weaken and take longer to recover.

Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!

Alan Keyes / Sarah Palin - 2012

Wouldn't you just love...

...to be a fly on the wall the day she gets "downsized"? I got a sawbuck on her sounding exactly like the very people she's bashing. Why is it that libs project their own faults so much? Internal guilt over what they know is wrong or just to have a target?

OK, sorry about this but quick CoS. Click to see AGW irony at it's finest.

However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results. - Sir Winston Churchill

WAM this... Mam

These people are suffering from what I call "WAM Syndrome" or "What About Me?" disease.

For the record, Ms. Singletary, that is exactly how this entire housing bubble turned into sub-prime mortgage crisis began:

Nov. 2000 -- [The big WAM] HUD ANNOUNCES NEW REGULATIONS TO PROVIDE $2.4 TRILLION IN MORTGAGES FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR 28.1 MILLION FAMILIES

Village Voice - Aug. 2008 -- Andrew Cuomo [Mr. WAM] and Fannie and Freddie - How the youngest Housing and Urban Development secretary in history gave birth to the mortgage crisis.

Candidate Obama - Sept. 17, 2007  -- Well, I uh, think there are a lot of folks who have to take some responsibility. The original idea [HUD, sub-prime mortgage fiasco, etc.] was a good one, which was, let's if we can distribute risk more broadly and make it easier to provide loans to people [WAM] who otherwise might not be able to get it [them].

WAM bam mam.

Michelle Singletary is a retard

Bailout = black gold rush.

But in the end, the stimulus blobmonster will destroy the incentive of white folks to work hard, innovate, and create companies to employ people. Result: blacks will end up with inflated stimu-dollars with nothing to buy on store shelves.

That's racial socialism, folks.

WAM=ACORN But I'm getting

WAM=ACORN

But I'm getting increasingly weary of people carping that they aren't getting a piece of the billions of dollars in debt the federal government is amassing to try to dam up this economic mudslide

Is it ok to carp about the millions being spent on Tatoo removal?  What about Swine Odor? Are all earmarks off limits? I guess it's totally out of the question to carp about pouring billions into GM as UAW refused to make concessions?

Ok if I whine about Obama sending 900 million to Gaza? Funding overseas abortions? Obama & Michelle's lavish WH parties? Congress trips abroad (with their wives)?

I promise not to complain when you quit taking MY tax dollars!

If I give one child a

If I give one child a little extra of something, the other two pout and whimper, "What about me?"

From now on, when her children do their homework, they also have to do the homework of the kid next door - who spent his evening playing video games.

Uncle Sam is on his way to Ms. Singletary's home to take away her children's toys.  They will be given to a kid who has stolen toys, but needs more.

Ms. Singletary's children no longer get to play little league, have dance lessons, or take vacations, however, Ms. Singletary will have to pay for other's children to enjoy these activities.

As newsprint is feeling pinched, Ms. Singletary is required to write three extra articles per day for other journalist who take the day off to go to the beach.
