Angry Democrats Threaten Boycott of Maryland Hotel with McCain Sign

  • Bookmark and Share

The Colony South Hotel & Conference Center in Clinton, Md., has hosted fundraisers for Barack Obama, held a prayer breakfast for a local Democrat, hosted a meeting for the African-American Democratic club and hosted a home foreclosure program for Democratic Rep. Steny Hoyer. But now that they had the audacity to put up a McCain-Palin campaign sign on their front lawn they are being threatened with an angry response from Obama supporters. (h/t Big Dog)

The act has enraged so many Obama supporters that even the NAACP has weighed in on the issue. Other Democrat activists are stirring talk of a boycott with explicit reference to shutting the hotel out of consideration as host for future political conferences; a strong arm tactic that has severe financial repercussions so close to Washington DC.

The sign went up Sunday evening, bold black letters against the stark white background of the marquee at the Colony South Hotel & Conference Center in Clinton: "Country First. McCain/Palin."

By daybreak, pandemonium had broken loose all across heavily Democratic Prince George's County. Many local supporters of Democrat Barack Obama, jolted by the message as they headed down Branch Avenue on their Monday morning commutes, grabbed cellphones and BlackBerrys to notify friends. Operators of neighborhood e-mail group lists cried foul to their memberships. The NAACP logged calls. Community leaders demanded boycotts of the hotel, a common venue for Democratic events.

The Washington Post reported this episode of angry Obama supporters in section C01 of their Sunday paper; which probably explains why you might not have heard about it. The WaPo reporter did however include mandatory mention of Republican rage as a buffer to blunt the acts of Democrats that abhor conservative political speech.

The outcry over the hotel marquee tapped into the passion -- and sometimes anger -- that has characterized this fall's presidential campaign. Supporters of Republican candidate John McCain have vented their rage at rallies this week, applauding thunderously as McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, accused Obama of "palling around with terrorists."

[...]

And Democratic activists started talking boycott. That could mean canceling political events at the hotel and urging residents to skip its Wednesday night karaoke events and Sunday brunches.

"While a business has the right to display what it chooses, the public has a right to show its contempt for that decision, including boycotting," said Mel Franklin, president of the Greater Marlboro Democratic Club.

What I found most interesting however was the characterization and vilification of the business as being disrespectful to area residents.

"Businesspeople have to be mindful of the sentiments and sensibilities of their market trading area, and Prince George's County is overwhelmingly for Obama," said community activist Arthur Turner of Kettering, who was among those advocating a boycott. "People I have talked to look at the sign as a slap in the face. They feel it was blatant disrespect. . . . I have heard people say they will no longer patronize Colony South because of that disrespect."

One professor was quoted in the report as equating the sign to a stinking smoke bomb.

The marquee supporting the GOP ticket in "an area that is strongly African American was like putting a stink bomb in the middle of the living room," said University of Maryland political Professor Ron Walters. "What it does show is the emotions that are around this campaign and this election."

Can you imagine what tomorrow's headline would be if anyone said "supporting the Obama ticket in an area that is strongly white is like putting a stink bomb in the middle of a living room"? Whites are already being called racist for opposing Barack Obama's policies and associations. A statement like this would be spoon fed to the mainstream media.

The story turns comical as business owner and Obama supporter Mary Brantley is described as being heartened to see that the marquee had been removed only to be filled with hand wringing consternation at seeing it had been replaced by a McCain Palin banner with the Country First slogan, again!

Mary Brantley, a travel agency owner from Upper Marlboro, belongs to the health club at Colony South and was among those who complained to the hotel. She was heartened to see the marquee changed Wednesday. It now advertises football games.

But as she drove past the hotel Friday afternoon, she couldn't help notice the two large banners in the front yard proclaiming: "McCain Palin. Country First." Again.

Ah the irony.

Brainwashed liberals again forget that

freedom of speech applies to all.    It's so sad .

It's a business. If you

It's a business. If you take a position in politics, you must be prepared for the result.

true in a sense

the  proper response is if individuals dont want to stay at a hotel that the owner has put up a Mc Cain or Obama sign up then they are free to do so ....if they are that thin skinned or feel that somehow they might be tainted by staying there ....but an organized response threatening the business is way over the top

Signs

I agree that the business is free to do as they wish. And the organized response is ridiculous. I can't imagine the response if GOPers were threatening a boycott of someone who put up in Obama in a GOP stronghold. I know we would be considered RACCIIISSSTTTSSSSSS!

Anyway, the locals should be thrilled they actually have people willing to do business in that area. It isn't exactly a place I want to hang out.

So were the organized

So were the organized responses to the Dixie Chicks "ridiculous" and "over the top"?

Not even remotely comparable

The Dixie Chicks did not merely have bumper stickers on their tour bus. The Bush insult was made at a big concert in London, England. Not only did they have a national bully pulpit, they went international with it.

Compare this to a local hotel putting up a standard political sign. I do agree that if a business chooses to take sides, they can't complain about any consequences.

Dixie Chicks

Nope. The Dixie Chicks were evil commies. :o) Just kidding. I didn't do anything other than stop buying their music and turning the station whenever they came on.

Obviously, the business will have to deal with the repercussions of the sign. And yeah, I think getting the NAACP involved is a bit freaking much. It's racist to put a McCain sign up in a heavily black area? Huh?

Brilliant Business move

The owner probably had a problem with democrats wanting to rent rooms by the hour , shooting heroin in the lobby, and hold NAMBLA meetings in the mens room of the lobby.

Put up the sign and the riff raff stays away.

The MARINES don't have that problem."

In a strange alignment of

In a strange alignment of the stars, I actually agree with you. There are a few small businesses in our little village with Obama signs in their windows or out in front. I think it's foolish for any business to advertise their politics, chancing alienating potential customers. Of course, this also applies to television entertainment shows...

Every once in a while the

Every once in a while the cosmic tumblers click into place. :-)

Works both ways, if ever I

Works both ways, if ever I find myself in Maryland anywhere near this place I know exactly where I'll stay.  And proud to do it.  From my experience, the democrats that stay in the hotels I've been in, trash them and are up all hours of the night anyway, so in that sense it was a good business decision.

Wow

What a dumb response!  Do you actually ask your fellow hotel guests which party they affiliate with, or just assume everyone who doesn't behave like you is a Democrat?  Lame.

Awaits all who dare

Awaits all who dare question the great and powerful O

Democrats

Terry,

You don't have to put the word "angry" as an adjective to Democrats.  It's already understood that when you use the word "Democrat" that "angry" is part of it.   :)

Worship

The one thing I can say about Conservatives, at least they don't worship their elected. Reagan was the closest thing to that, and it seemed more of an admiration of what he stood for rather than cult of personality.

I dare say, much support from the Right for McCain is like of that for Bush. It's more about defending him against the rabid ridiculousness of the Left.

On topic: It's idiocy for a business to broadcast its politics (unless you're Google). Just ask the network news divisions that are hemorrhaging viewers.

Ridiculous

This goes beyond the absurd.  Everyone of us, businesses included have a right to show support for the candidate of our choice.  To allow people bullying rights because they don't like the choice is ridiculous.  I hope the hotel continues to display their signs.  I know the area and I find it hard to believe that the hotel will suffer from much of a business loss from most of the population.  It's just not an affluent area.

First Ammendment Rights

I thought that people were perfectly within their rights to voice their displeasure, but I thought the level of hatred was a bit much, the mass burnings of CDs, etc.

I don't think I'd take part in a boycott of this hotel.

So, you did agree with the

So, you did agree with the principle - it's just how one voices displeasure, which is really up to them, as long as they didn't hurt anybody else. The burning of CDs, etc, is just a matter of personal taste in protest.

Correct. I didn't agree with it, but the principle is okley-dokley.

but I thought the level of hatred was a bit much, the mass burnings of CDs, etc - It was discust and burning the CD's was a really effective way to show ones discust of the Dixie Witches.  It was perfect capitalism, it did not affect the witches income and was totally on the burnees dime.

I doubt if teh boycott goes anywhere.  Remember the Disney boycott, Disney is still around.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Perhaps they need to explain

Perhaps they need to explain teh economics of the decision.  Obama wants to tax them 5% more than normal thereby passing the taxes to its patrons.  The business is only looking out for its patrons well being.  A hundred dollars a night instead of 105.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Aint it awful

Aint it awful, but what is one to do?

A look to the Future

An angry Obama administration is reacting to the 2010 Congressional elections. "We discovered that a Republican nominee was actually put on the ballot in the state of Virginia" VP Biden said today. "That kind of advertising shows racist hatred towards the Congress and this great nation. We are going to call for a protest, and ask that all public funds be immediately halted to Virginia, and that Virginia return all its matching funds of the past two years".

In related news, the Obama Attorney Journal is looking into reports that a plumber in Scottsdale, AZ started his own business and reported income of $250,001 in 2011. "Joe the VP believes this plumber received help from the illegal Republican immigrants that have been moving to Arizona. This plumber clearly thinks he's better than anyone else, and needs to be punished". Obama's attorney general has taken steps to fine this plumber 95% of his gross earnings. "When we said we were going to give tax breaks to 95% of the people during our campaign in 2008, we meant it. We really didn't expect anyone to make $250,000 in this country due to the George Bush's Great Depression that began on 19 January 2009; which is why we believe it's necessary to use this man as an example", said Obama while visiting the Acorn Palace along Chicago's lakeshore drive. Obama said this would probably be enough, and did not feel the need to send in his MSM Swat Team in this instance.

This is already reality....

These scenarios are already real in some places like academia, Hollywood, SNL, etc...

I wanted to include the states of NY and CA but they are not there yet. Maybe next year.

Conservatism is no only not allowed but punished. I'm starting to believe that this could be worse than the Carter years.

And the libs try to convince me that they are tolerant and open minded. Yeah, right.

Or maybe what they mean by tolerance is "appeasement to the enemies" and open mindness is "my brain fell off"

The NAACP?

They really had to call the NAACP?  Why?  Please explain to me how a business putting up a sign violates the civil rights of black people in the area.

MC, you can't explain this.

MC, you can't explain this. You just have to know that it will. The seriousness of the charge is all that matters.

Oh, I know there is no

Oh, I know there is no explanation for it, which was kind of my point in asking the question.

I find it asinine that someone would call the NAACP because a business dare put up a sign they didn't agree with.  If you don't like it, don't give that business your money - simple as that.  But to call the NAACP?  Overreact much?

I fear for the Republic.
