Are Women Responsible For Growth in Goverment?

Photo of Terry Ann Rendon.

John R. Lott, Jr. makes a compelling case in his article posted over at Fox News. Lott writes:

Women's suffrage also explains much of the federal government's
growth from the 1920s to the 1960s. In the 45 years after the
adoption of suffrage, as women's voting rates gradually increased
until finally reaching the same level as men's, the size of state and
federal governments expanded as women became an increasingly
important part of the electorate.

But the battle between the sexes does not end there. During
the early 1970s, just as women's share of the voting population
was leveling off, something else was changing: The American
family began to break down, with rising divorce rates and increasing
numbers of out-of-wedlock births.

Over the course of women's lives, their political views on average
vary more than those of men. Young single women start out being
much more liberal than their male counterparts and are about 50
percent more likely to vote Democratic. As previously noted, these
women also support a higher, more progressive income tax as well
as more educational and welfare spending.

Mr. Lott continues his article surmising why women look for government solutions:

Because women generally shoulder most of the child-rearing responsibilities, married men are more likely to acquire marketable skills that help them earn money outside the household. If a man gets divorced, he still retains these skills. But if a woman gets divorced, she is unable to recoup her investment in running the household.

Hence, single women who believe they may marry in the future, as well as married women who most fear divorce, look to the government as a form of protection against this risk from a possible divorce: a more progressive tax system and other government transfers of wealth from rich to poor. The more certain a woman is that she doesn't risk divorce, the more likely she is to oppose government transfers.

I have an alternative theory. Many big government ideas tug at the heart strings. Emotional arguments appeal to women. For example, those who argue for universal health care cite the millions without health insurance. How can one not want health insurance provided for everyone? Big government types also believe the quality of education will improve if we spend more but forget their logic just doesn't hold up to the actual statistics. Environmentalists also use sentimental pleas by sounding the alarm of having a clean environment for "future generations," all the while calling for the federal government to institute a cap and trade system for carbon emissions.

Every American, male or female, should want accessible health care, a
quality educational system, and a clean environment. However, where liberals
and conservatives differ is how hands on our government should be to deal with these issues.

I _knew_ we never should

I _knew_ we never should have let women vote! /s

There's this comedian I can't stand who has one funny line: "You know, there was a vote to decide whether or not women got the right to vote. How the f*&! did we lose that?!"

Sorry Terry

I have to agree with Lott.

Given the increasingly sad track record men have displayed, there is a certain inevitability that women would look for a little more insurance than the family unit has provided them since the days of Rosie the Riveter.

At some point, Americans embraced the idea that they could work blue collar jobs and live like rich people.  Rich men can afford to support two families.

It's not all the fault of men. Women are responsible for choosing the sorry men they choose to be with. Somewhere along the way, it became in vogue to tie one's future to the sorriest of individuals. Perhaps choosing better partners to begin with would be a good place to start.

Some truth to it ckc

But we're into the 3rd generation of this fiasco now, and the role of fathers is so downgraded in significance that daughters don't have much interaction with their real fathers, and sons don't have a father to emulate.

I don't think the desertion factor can be easily quantified, but I've seen it in action too many times.

I think you miss the

I think you miss the greater problem.

Anti-father bias in the Family Law systems of every state, which is now so pervasive that divorce seldom leaves a father with any role to play in the lives of his children.  This is the work of the N.O.W. crowd and their feminist allies together with the GLBT folks.  The latter are being influenced heavily by the Lesbian element.

When a diovorce occurs involvng small children, there is a legal principle called the tender years doctrine, which will generally place the children with the mother unless she is incarcerated.  Mental illness and even drug and alcohol addictions will not disqualify mothers from custtody.   I have seen the Family Court return children again and again to unfit mothers who yoyo in and out of jails and treatment centers.  The fathers are never even considered.

There is another legal doctrine wich calls for the children to remain together.  As long as any child amongst siblings ius under ten, the tender years doctrine will favor the mother.

Beyond all this is child support.  This evil institution is no more than a privately funded welfare system for women.  In our jurisdiction it is routine for prosecutors to pursue and even jail men for child support arrears.  I have seen the same courts simply excuse mothers who have been found to be in arrears for 5 years or more.  These women belong in jail just like the men of similar circumstances.

Then there is the conduct of the custodial mothers.  Many of them seem bent on alienating the child from its father.  They violate visitation agreements and manipulate and brainwash their children.  many of them file false child abuse complaints in order to induce courts to terminate visitation while the allegations are investigated.  months later, when visitation is finally restored, the father finds his relationship with his child has been badly damaged if not destroyed.

Unless this hopelessly corrupt and broken system is drastically reformed, the issue of fatherlessness is going to get worse.

A case in point:  The State of Texas siezed those children from the FLDS Searching for Zion compound.  The rationale behind this siezure was routine.  The CPS received an anonymous telephone call alleging child abuse in the form of statutory rape in the compound.

Anyone with a shred of knowledge of our system of law should recognize the problem here.  The State of Texas violated the 4th Amendment rights of the FLDS on the basis of a rumor.  The telephone call was not a sworn statement to the police.  It is not a legitimate basis for a search or an arrest warrant because it has the same legal status as a rumor.  This thuggish bnehavior is the same in my jurisdiction as well.  CPS routine forces its way into homes and violates the privacy of families based on reports whose authenticity is not sworn.  the reporters are not held to any standard of truthfulness.  Indeed, my state actually forbids the prosecution of any person who calls the CPS "hotline", no matter what they say.  It should come as no surprise the 70-84% of these reports prove false.

NL... Excellent points

NL...

Excellent points all.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Yes, excellent points

But I think the shift towards the Nanny State began some time before Child Protective Services began its assault on the family.

Perhaps it's a regional thing, but the majority of the broken homes I'm personally aware of have little or nothing to do with fathers being banned by social services from visiting their children, and everything to do with the parents splitting up and remarrying other spouses.

Further, there seems to be a rash of stepdads who look at stepdaughters the wrong way.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Irrational.  Ask some

Irrational.

Ask some operative questions:  Who got custody of the minor children?  Is anyone paying child support?  Was the mother allowed to move to another city and re-marry, leaving the father chained to his current employment in his current city by rapacious child support exactions?  This situation effectively ends the father's relationship with his children.

Stepdads who look at step-daughters the wrong way?  This might be a sound argument for Dad to have custody, might it not?  And mom is so stupid as not to see this under her own nose?  Such women are unfit parents.

Let's talk double standard.  In my state, the tyrants who administer the family law system invariably insert relocation clauses in divorce decrees.  However, they equally invariably waive these in court when a mother seeks to relocate for one of two reasons:  A better job, or to re-marry.  I have seen with my own eyes a Family Court Tyrant deny a father who had been LAID OFF, but had custody of the minor children, permission to relocate to another state to accept a position that paid significantly more than the job he had lost!!!   This would have been a no-brainer had the mother had custody!  The mother in this case was on welfare and was paying no child support.  The Court was concerned that she would have insufficient contact with the children were the move allowed.  I would ask why?  So she could infect these children with her own shiftlessness?  The dad in this case wound up commuting to his new job, which of course, let the state award custody of his kids to the ex-wife because he was out of town all the time.  He now pays child support to this woman, lives in another state from his kids, and has no relationship with them.  This after he had custody of these kids for something like 7 years.

I can tell you another similar story where a dad lost custody to mom after he had held it for two years.  She was released from an alcoholic rehabilitation center and managed to convince the Tyrant in the Family Court that a drunken sot is the better parent as long as it has a vagina.  The system is so broken it hasn't a clue it is broken.

Guess I stand corrected

Inasmuch as your stories prove women are generally worse single parents than men, And deadbeat moms are the worst.

I'm OK with that.

Fortunately after 31 years together we haven't yet tested your premise.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

I am merely illustrating

I am merely illustrating that the courts do not consider the actual circumstances of each divorce.  They cookie-cutter the situation with some extremely biased laws and policies.  The results are a debacle.  50% of all marriages end in divorce.  In cases where there are minor children, the statistics in my state still show about 90% of the time, mom has the kids, regardless of her relative fitness as a parent.  In the remaining ten percent, the mother is most often, in jail, in rehab, absconded or denies any interest in the children.  The 90% number is a great improvenment.  Ten years ago that number was 95%.

I agree with NL207

and I would add that child support/alimony are a debt. We as a nation supposedly rejected the idea of debtors prison as unfair and counter productive. So why do men go to jail for a debt and while in jail stack up more debt which they cannot pay. It is systemic sexism pure and simple.

In this country when a debt is owed there are many remedies including liens and garnishment. Why are these ignored and criminal charges opted for instead? If a man can pay and won't, his money can be attached. If a man is poor, homeless, bankrupt and cannot always pay and falls behind, but the ex-wife is well off with a decent income, why punish the poor man, why not help him with positive programs, and reduce his tax burden until he can work his way up? If he were a woman, she would be helped, but because he is a man, he is despised and cast aside, and locked out.

What of the love and guidance a father can contribute to his children in the mean time. The formative years of a child's life can never be gotten back when they are missed. But no, too many consider a poor man as a worthless pig who has no parental value or rights even though his heart bleeds to see his children. Who will stand up for this man? Who will correct this tyranny of sexism and discrimination and favoritism in our laws and our courts?

Personally, I have one child and was sued for divorce by an unfaithful wife. Because of the horrific injustice I have experienced (and my case is far from the worst), I have chosen to never remarry and have no more children so long as I live in the United States.

I love America, but I grieve for the damage that has been done to her and I don't see any hope on the horizon that our legal system will ever be overhauled and corrected.

So for now, I wait for the Kingdom of God to arrive on Earth to cast aside man's laws and replace them with God's perfect laws.

Q. Is Panamanian born John McCain a "Natural Born Citizen"

Are women responsible for

Are women responsible for more growth in the govt?

Of course.

My great grandmother in Illinois marched with the suffragettes, I have her picture up on our mantle..I'm proud of her...

I am also one who has written that only people who pay property taxes should be allowed to vote, male or female...

Really it is an endless circle at times...as far as I am concerned the leftist women have really screwed it up with the voting parties, but it was intended that way by the left...the govt. also have made it easy or hard depending on how you look at life and your own self pride with all the hoops you have to jump through at times to be on your own if you need a little help to start with, that is where they catch millions of women intentionally, it is easier to get welfare and stay pregnant if more money per baby comes to the household...especially if you are basically lazy, or have been raised to think it is owed to you, which the msm helps with that everyday for decades.

Oh well...on and on it goes...we need to get rid of the majority of these programs/rules/regulations completely and learn to be responsible for yourself and let charity help you out til you get your good leg up and move forward...that way you will become more informed about who you want representing you and who you vote for...it is called pride.

Never gonna' happen though...

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

I agree bigtimer

But much of the problem is irresponsible men.

I'll be married to the same wife 31 years in June.  Neither she nor our children have had to rely on government assistance during those years.

And though my tax dollars have regularly gone to assist the families of those who made irresponsible choices, the Government never so much as sends me a thank you letter in recognition of not having been a burden.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Yeah Cool... Since this

Yeah Cool...

Since this was about women for the most part and their contribution to govt. expansion...

I agree with the irresponsible men, but there must come a time when women hold themselves responsible, equal rights and all that jazz... pride is a beautiful thing, this is all they need to feel that will give them the urge to keep moving forward and not repeat the same mistakes for the most part...something the govt. has no plans on encouraging.

Btw...I hope all went peachy-keen for the wedding for your daughter...

Mr. Lott speaks for Women ? I don't think so

I have a Single Woman (daughter) living at home....and the Govt. seldom enters any of her conversations.

Mr. Lott's "Government this"...Government that...scenarios is a little beyond his Grasp ....being he is a Male talking about what Females want/do.

While he cetainly is capable of reflecting upon the thinking of a few, I don't believe he has a Grip on the "Majority" subject matter.

Example...his comment that women "look to the government as a form of protection against this risk from a possible divorce" is just a lot of baloney.

Ali-money laws in Calif. is all  the Women wanted from the Govt.

I'm with the heart strings alternative theory

But I think the pernicious propaganda effects of socialist ("public") schooling add a lot to it. I don't have the stats handy, but I'd be happy to place a wager on the small-government proclivities of most homeschooled females vs most socialist-schooled females.

The homeschooled girls would at least have a chance to learn a few logical things about free market economics, which tend to counteract emotional tugs at the heart strings. As long as both sexes remain largely ignorant on economics, they'll continue making crappy fiscal choices within both "major" political parties. That's why centrally planned schooling has failed, and needs to be entirely defunded.
