Matt Damon dressed as gas pump? Ben Affleck as an ear of corn? No, it’s not “Good
Will Hunting,” the sequel. It’s a new set of videos promoting ethanol mandates on the Web site cleanmyride.org.
The Clean My Ride site is run by the Center for American Progress Action Fund, an arm of the liberal think tank Center for American Progress. The purpose of Clean My Ride is to urge Congress to mandate ethanol as a fuel.
Earlier this week, NBC’s Lee Cowan admitted it was ethanol’s fault milk prices were “skyrocketing.” So which is it? Do environmentalists want better gas mileage or cheaper milk?
One of the other main points of the Web site is to try and get people to stop “running scared from Big Oil.” The first video, which features Affleck in a corn costume – it’s better than “Gigli” – even shows a sequence where “Big Oil” executives are chasing down an ear of corn and then bludgeoning it to death.
The site encourages visitors to send this message to Congress (emphasis added):
Dear Representative:America must increase its energy independence and stop global warming. To accomplish these goals, I strongly urge you to vote for provisions that require cars and light trucks get 35 miles per gallon by 2020, and to require some service stations sell ethanol for flexible fuel cars. These two measures will reduce oil use, save families money, and lower global warming pollution. Please support them as essential parts of energy legislation.
The site also features six videos following the main character “Phin” who does whatever he can to try and convince people to help him on “his quest to save the environment.”
Other videos feature celebrities Sarah Silverman, Jason Biggs, Joshua Jackson and Jennifer Garner.

Why Stop There?

Global Laming
August 16, 2007 - 17:56 ET by third eyeDear Representative: Global Laming is a very real and difficult problem today. America must increase its resources and funds to stop global laming. To accomplish these goals, I urge all Americans to resist laming, whenever one is faced with it. It wont be easy, as millions todays in society are really quite lame, and scientists are still working on a cure. However with your support, we will make global laming a thing to the past.
What's annoying about that
August 16, 2007 - 18:26 ET by HypocriteHaterWhat's annoying about that Clean My Ride website, is that the graphics have that drawn-by-a-10-year-old look. Of course, we're talking about the brain power of people like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. I guess they have to dumb it down so the enviro-wackos can understand. Plus it serves to indoctrinate our kids, so they're killing 2 birds with 1 stone.

August 16, 2007 - 19:12 ET by dabalStrange, I used to think of Affleck as a conservative, or at least centrist.
He must own a bunch of farm property in Iowa, or whatever combination of drugs and propaganda inherent to Hollywood Boulevard finally got to him.
Or, perhaps, I'm confusing Affleck with some of the roles he's played. If the only movie you ever saw with Alec Baldwin in it was The Hunt for Red October , you might think he was a conservative as well.

August 16, 2007 - 19:51 ET by c5thenEthanol produces more pollution then gasoline. A recent study finds that E85 engines (85% ethanol) produced more CO2, CO and unburned particles (potential lung problems and smog) than plain gasoline. The only benefit to ethanol is it is from renewable sources and thus reduces the amount of oil that is needed. That "benefit" however is offset by higher food prices, higer emmisions and worse air quality.
I for one do not define "progress" as one step forward, two steps back.

So, Ben and Matt, disadvantaged people in other countries must suffer more so that we can accomplish nothing other than feel less guilty about a mild phenomenon that we have no role in causing?

August 17, 2007 - 10:23 ET by BeowulfAdd to it the fact that we could convert every ear of corn the US produces and still only put a small dent in our oil consumption.
Could it possibly be that those promoting ethanol own vast corn fields, and therefore anticipate cashing in on hugely increased corn prices?

hay PT,
August 16, 2007 - 21:01 ET by upcountrywaterSay I was wondering, how many acres of corn does it take to produce 1 barrel (30 gallons) of ethanol?
Does it take more energy to make ethanol than the amount of energy one can get out of it?
One needs to buy it, to plant it ,weed it, harvest it, process it and then ship it.

Ethanol Numbers
August 16, 2007 - 22:33 ET by PopularTechThe 2004 national crop average was 140 Bushels of corn per acre.
Now depending on where you read, Ethanol production is at 2.5-28 gallons per bushel.
Now I believe a standard oil barrel is supposed to represent 42 U.S. gallons.
Which gives you 350-392 gallons per acre or 8.3-9.3 barrels of Ethanol per acre.
The big problem with Ethanol is the BTU rating which means you will get WORSE mileage and have to fill up more.
The Anti "Man-Made" Global Warming Resource
thank U PT
August 16, 2007 - 23:45 ET by upcountrywaterSoo that's about 9 barrels/acre/per year. Assuming one corn crop per year . Our oil use is about 20 million barrels per day, or 7.3 BILLION barrels /yr.
Now that 9 barrels didn't get to the pump for free, there are some losses in production.. 50 % 75% some say 110% ?
In 2020 the dream of the earth savers is to run 20% of the country on this fuel. 7.3 Bb times 20% 1.46 Bb devide by 9 is
162,000,000 acres in corn! at 100% conversion factor. that is twice the area that is under culivation at the moment. forget food
It would be cheaper to build 200 new nuclear power plants, and it would take up WAY less space!

Bravo!
You have hit the nail on the head...
August 16, 2007 - 22:44 ET by c5thenI do not know the specific numbers...but
When the energy to plant, grow, harvest and ferment the crop to produce ethanol is all taken into account, it takes more energy to produce a gallon of ethanol than you get out of it.
Hydrogen has the same problem as do almost all the "alternative" fuels.
The only two energy sources that I am aware of that are energy positive (takes less energy to produce than you get out of them) are oil and nuclear power.

The Costs of Ethanol
August 17, 2007 - 08:20 ET by EllisWyattHere's what my favorite investment newsletter had to say:
"The success of corn-based ethanol production in the U.S. relies on large government subsidies, as well as on hefty tariffs against Brazilian imports. Furthermore, ethanol production consumes about as much energy as it delivers...if not more. And making the stuff requires prodigious amounts of water...and corn. The rapidly shrinking Ogallala Aquifer provides most of the water. The degrading soils of the Midwest provide the corn."
If that wasn't bad enough, there's this:
"Farmers know that they must practice crop rotation to maintain the fertility of their soil. But with the price of corn rising and the allure of a corn goldmine, some farmers are throwing caution and common sense to the wind."
"By planting corn on corn and not using proper rotation practices, farmers will almost inevitably face the prospect of growing corn in nutrient-deficient clay. Soil deterioration is a perennial condition in the Corn Belt."
"Make no mistake; many experts say crop rotation is vital, no matter what the flyer at Wal-Mart says. Rotation serves several ecological and agronomic purposes. It makes it harder for diseases, weeds and insect pests to persist. The right rotation also builds soil fertility. Soybeans are a natural partner to corn because they capture nitrogen from the atmosphere, leaving more in the soil for the next year's crop."
"Some farmers and scientists disagree, saying that with new technology corn on corn is very possible to do effectively. I hope the corn on corn people are right. But I have my doubts. When farmers start ignoring centuries of wisdom, just for the sake of cashing in on next autumn's corn price, something must be very wrong. Probably, what's wrong is ethanol itself. This boom is probably going to go bust, even with government subsidies."
So much for the ethanol solution!
If you're not outraged at the media, you haven't been paying attention.

August 17, 2007 - 08:41 ET by Cool ArrowThat's another war waiting to erupt.
None other than T. Boone Pickins owns the rights to the deepest dipstick into the Ogalala (Amarillo, Tx) and has been threatening to pipeline it as far away as El Paso to meet the demands of thirsty West Texans.
The draw rate on the Ogalala has far outstripped its minimal recharge for years.
Sure, we have plenty of shady ways in West Texas to make water flow uphill, but if we put such demands on the same aquifer used all the way up to Nebraska, they may frown a little, what with the demand for corn.

August 16, 2007 - 20:48 ET by Conservative in the ArtsSome day, I'm going to hear a reporter tell me how evil "Big Corn Growers" are. Frankencorn
August 17, 2007 - 01:05 ET by Lame CherryFrankencorn, soy and canola are already in the food supply and are a literal poison to humans as well as animals. The fact is immuno diseases including allergies in humans and animals eating this stuff are skyrocketing. It is too complex to explain here in detail, but as my inspired findings from God revealed, the amino acid base in the engineered foods is combing with the human absorbing process on the sub cell level and changing the bodies eating this stuff into something the immune systems do not recognize and then white blood cells attack their own bodies.
The death is here already along with the preservatives and growth hormones which are turning people into a race of giants now.
None of it is natural and is a violation of Biblical law. It is even mutating on the pollen levels and infecting bees as bees only eat pollen which is concentrated DNA.
I have no problem with creating super oil soybean or super sugar corn for ethanol, but the bi products must be burned to break them down to base elements again and never eaten.

Corn shortage a-coming - go nuclear.
August 16, 2007 - 23:50 ET by Parker1227As farmers shift to selling corn and other crops for government subsidized bio-fuel, expect prices of most if not all foods to go up.
Most of us eat chicken, beef, pork and even farmed fish which is fed with various grains and soybeans etc. All of this will increase in price as farmers apportion more and more land to bio-fuel production. Simple supply and demand.
Even basics like bread and corn tortillas will go up. Of course, all this will hurt the poor in third-world countries the most.
Then we can expect top soil depletion as every scrap of plant matter is put into bio-fuel instead of soil replenishment.
Even with all this, bio fuel is expected to supply at the most 12% of fuel consumption.
Oil sounds much less harmful to me - if the crackpots will allow is to extract the oil we have.
Nuclear power seems the only long term solution with enough capacity to meet our growing energy needs. Convert non-polluting nuclear energy into electricity, and use electricity to convert water into hydrogen to power non-polluting autos etc.
Ethanol Corn IS STILL ANIMAL FEED
August 17, 2007 - 00:57 ET by Lame CherryGreetings Parker,
I wanted to explain to you and other posters a few things about bio fuels and where you are wrong about land and crops.
Bio fuels only take out the starch or oil out of crops. They do not take out the feed value, but in fact break the crops down into more digestable products after being processed. This means they are still animal feed or if people wanted to they still could eat them.
I broke this story on my blog a year before anyone was even starting to consider crop shortages or price rises. I also predicted that the wacko left would start making bogus statements in dealing with it. All of that has happened. What no one has figured out yet are these facts which I know George Bush knows.
First, America and South America produce the viable food reserves in the world. This means Europe self sustains itself, Russia plods along attempting to feed itself as Africa does when communists are not committing genocide and China with the Mideast are a black hole incapable of feeding themselves.
Second, the United States can with import cut offs, uncapping our oil wells in the west that are capped, along with bio fuel inclusion can be self reliant.
Third, and this is the big third, America is having an economic war waged upon us by the Eurasians from central European naroc bankers, Russian Bolsheviks in Putin, Islamocommunists in the Mideast, the latino banditos and the Chicoms. The one thing that is the great equalizer in this is food.
Iran can make oil a thousand dollas a barrel. China can implode the dollar. Terrorists can vaporize American cities bankrupting the American economy.........but in the end America will still be producing food and the more food rises in price the more it will topple Muslim regimes, Chicom regimes, plunge naroc banking profits being eaten by their own inflation and causing comrade Putin's FSB state to crumble.
They started this, but America will finish it on food. They can try and eat their oil or their dusty Chinese dirt.....but in the end the entire regime system allied against America will implode in 90 days without American supply.
While others were like Limbaugh mocking Bush on switch grass fuel, I perked up immediately as I knew that President Bush knew something horrendous was coming. He knew it for certain and he has planned for it. Bio fuel plants are going up all over the midwest and Bush stated America is not getting out of Iraq, but the entire Middle East in 2009.
There is as General Patton's uncle told him in 1930 "a hell of a war coming" and there is a hellish war coming on the world soon. The Eurasians after the coming Mideast WMD blow out are going to arm like the world has never seen and then it is going to be Russians, Chinese, Indians, Muslims and central Europeans slugging it out using weapon systems you never dreamed existed with no holds barred.
Bush knows this and has placed America in the best possible position to survive. The war should have been fought using American firepower out of Iraq on the Asian steppes, but ignorant democrats have now doomed this war to be fought from the Balkans, into Prague, Bohemia and into the Rhine and there going to be nothing left as it flows back into the valley's around Jerusalem.
There is no stopping this as the war has already started. Food will be the breakpoint trigger in response to the resource triggers being aimed at America.
America will still have the food, bio fuel and livestock feed supply, but the rest of the world is going to have almost 4 billion furious, starving, Islamists, communists and murderous democracies locked into Eurasia and they will be at war.
Do not every underestimate Bush. I may not agree with his latest ideas, but those people have been planning for a war a decade from now or then when they started. Bush is a historian and knows it is about to repeat itself.

The NEW Poor and Hungry
August 17, 2007 - 11:13 ET by Special KayI found one good thing on that website. I used their pre-filled letter to send my own letter to my Representative. Thanks Clean My Ride!
Dear Representative:
Although I agree we need to lessen our dependency on foreign oil, we need to look at other forms of bio-fuel, using coal-to-gas, hydrogen, trash, or (*gasp*)NUCLEAR!
Our grocery bill is OUTRAGEOUS - conservatively last year I would spend $200/bi-weekly and this would feed us until the next payday. Today (payday), we have been out of bread, milk, and cereal, not to mention meat since Tuesday, last. Thank God we still have the vegetables from our garden, or we'd be filing for food stamps.
Cheap cuts of meat and ground beef are becoming outrageous, and who can afford to pay $10 for a cut-up egg-laying chicken with no meat on it?! Are you KIDDING ME?!
This is all tied to Ethanol. STOP IT RIGHT NOW.
We are the new POOR and HUNGRY - a household income of $70,000, with a mortgage and car payment, 3 kids to clothe and insurance (don't get me started), this Ethanol scam is KILLING US.
