| A Buyers' Market |
The Publisher of NewsBusters.org, Brent Bozell, wrote his syndicated column about the media's full-court Obama press just this week. In which he accurately points out that while the journalistic class remains utterly infatuated with the man, it appears that the American people are begining to reach their saturation point.
So let us now turn our attention to an item in yesterday's Daily Times Herald in Carroll, Iowa entitled "Carroll woman's answer to highly visible Obama: Selling her televisions."
A 78-year-old Carroll woman says she's so tired of seeing President Barack Obama on the airwaves that she's selling her television sets - two of them.
Deloris Nissen, a retired nurses' aide and former Kmart employee who was raised on a farm near Audubon, placed a classified advertisement with The Daily Times Herald for Friday's paper.
In the $5.50 ad, Nissen tells readers she has two television sets for sale.
The reason: "Obama on every channel and station."
In an interview Nissen said she is serious about selling two TVs - and genuine about her disgust with what she believes to be an overexposed president.Story Continues Below Ad ↓
"I just got tired of watching him on every channel," Nissen said. "I thought, my gosh, does he ever stay at the White House?"
That is what the public relations experts might call overexposure.
Granted, Ms. Nissen did not vote for Obama last year, so she had a head start towards having seen enough.
Nissen, who voted for U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in the 2008 presidential election, said she could live with seeing Obama come on television to make serious announcements. But he seems to be on all the time, Nissen said.
When the president does appear on a channel she happens to be watching, Nissen said, she quickly turns.
"I have the remote real handy," Nissen said. "I have the batteries. I'm ready for him."
Nissen's annoyance with the president as a frequent presence on her television doesn't mean she'll abandon the medium altogether.
She's keeping a bigger flat-screen television and selling an older 20-inch Sony and possibly a 13-inch set.
So she's hanging in there.
Obama's own advisers and political observers across the ideological spectrum have for months debated whether the now popular president is overexposed.
Well we know who won that White House inter-office brouhaha.
For her part, Nissen said she expects to take some flack for the advertisement in her local paper. After all, Obama did win Iowa and Carroll County in the 2008 election.
But she's not worried about any criticism.
"I'm an old lady, and I don't care," Nissen said.
Like I said, she's hanging in there.
I hope she knows she isn't alone in her Obama overload. Somehow I think she does, but perhaps she doesn't care about that either.
Cheers to her.

Understandable. I no longer watch live TV...
July 30, 2009 - 08:10 ET by jazboI only watch DVDs or internet content that I can control 100%.
As an added bonus, commercial breaks on my streaming sites are generally only 15 sec long :-)
Those who believe in nothing will believe anything.
I stopped watching TV back
July 30, 2009 - 08:20 ET by G. MayI stopped watching TV back around 2001. One of the best decisions of my life.
If my cable company only offered high speed internet without having to get the basic cable package, I'd be all over that.
Exactly why I keep even basic cable. Only for the 'Net.
July 30, 2009 - 08:32 ET by jazboI wonder if the mainstrem media powers-that-be understand how truly obsolete they are. And how disconnected free thinking people are becoming from them.
Those who believe in nothing will believe anything.
Especially obsolete…

Get DSL
July 30, 2009 - 08:51 ET by BlueCat57Get DSL or see if a neighbor leaves their WiFi connection open.
I stopped watching the nutworks - all Ears, all the time!
July 30, 2009 - 12:19 ET by Mary Louise TurnerThe only reason I even have a TV in the house is because of C-SPAN and C-SPAN2, which has opened my eyes to the extent of Congressional tomfoolery, especially with our taxpayers' dollars. Unfortunately, even those channels give us a lot of exposure to "Ears" - you can't escape!
I think I'm on love!

Obama overexposed at NB
July 30, 2009 - 08:38 ET by BlueCat57Well I agree that Obama is overexposed even here at NB. Of course that would be the case because NB exists to point out media bias.
I shut off DirecTV almost 2 years ago because most of the content was junk and I could get enough from the Internet for "free." I doubled my DSL speed for $5 and recently added NetFlix to the mix for $9 a month, saving me about $40 a month. No more Obama 24/7 and more control over what I watch.
I listen to the radio over the Internet and read news off it to.
Now if I could just get my favorite talk show hosts to talk less about Obama (not likely) I would listen to them more. For now I have the "radio" on in the background and listen to podcasts on the topics I want to learn about when I have time to sit and listen.
And I read more books, and so do the kids.
On the flip side, I'm going to get politically active this election season. A lot is at stake even in my backwater neck of the world. Watch out liberals, statists and RINOs - I'm gunning (maybe I should use a different word, I mean that figuratively not literally) for you!
Wow!
July 30, 2009 - 08:41 ET by CaringwhiteguyThis elderly white woman, born and raised miles from anyone with dark skin pigmentation is a victim of her own circumstances and surroundings. Her bias toward the President is understandable, though misguided.
Fortunately, this is a TEACHABLE MOMENT. The President needs to reach out to this woman. She should get an invitation to the White House for a beer.
Hopefully she will accept, and America will be a better place for it.
White Iowans are not automatically bigots, Caringwhiteguy
July 30, 2009 - 10:00 ET by nkviking75As an Iowan, I can confirm that our population is overwhelmingly white. But that does not automatically make us a bunch of bigots. As countless Newsbuster postings will confirm, Obama gets tons of media coverage, much of it uncritical and even bordering on the worshipful. Those of us who oppose Obama naturally get sick of the overexposure.
This is your teachable moment. I don't know what your bias is toward Iowans, but it needs to change.

July 30, 2009 - 10:06 ET by Cool ArrowBut isn't Iowa the "for instance" Joe Biden used to illustrate his opinion that black children are stupid?
I think the blame for the bias falls squarely on the shoulders of Joe Biden and Barack Obama.

Black pol in trouble? Scream "racism"
July 30, 2009 - 10:20 ET by nkviking75Libs also seem to solve every problem a black, particularly Obama, has by screaming "racism". You don't have to be racist to oppose Obama.
When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.
Did you get this one from the tarot cards or the ouija board?
July 30, 2009 - 10:35 ET by SickofLibsAs a devoted Obamaphile, this may come as a shock to you, but an overwhelming majority of your fellow citizens on both sides of the aisle are also at this point sick to their stomachs of 24/7 Obama.
Commenting on my own post
July 30, 2009 - 11:29 ET by CaringwhiteguySheesh. I can't believe how lacking of humor you people are. Folks, what's going on here is illustrating absurdity by being absurd. Obama's little show of inviting Sgt. Crowley and Mr. Gates to the White House is totally ridiculous.
I'm replacing Sgt. Crowley with the woman in Iowa. I'm also using the White House's words about a TEACHABLE MOMENT. Don't you guys get it? It's a joke!!!! Lighten up!!!!

Sensitive
July 30, 2009 - 17:25 ET by nkviking75I'm sorry I didn't catch the sarcasm, but a lifetime of living in Iowa can make one sensitive to comments like that. Some people say such things and mean them.
I make sarcastic comments here too, but I don't like to assume that others are going to catch it. I usually use something like </sarcasm off>.

Bigoited Iowans??
July 30, 2009 - 11:38 ET by grumpyoldbI have lived in Iowa all my life (50+ years so far) and I have seen a lot happen around here. One thing you will find if you actually take the time to get to know us, is that we judge people by what they do, NOT what their skin tone is. Do I have a bias? Yes, against people that make stupid blanket comments......

Agree...to a point.
July 30, 2009 - 15:54 ET by onewiseguyI too have lived in Iowa and Iowans are generally down-to-earth people but this past election was a clear example that too many Iowans voted based on emotion because Barack Obama has accomplished NOTHING even remotely qualifiying him for the Presidency...yet he carried Iowa.

hey, don't forget...

This is why I love this
July 30, 2009 - 15:32 ET by Another Dead KennedyThis is why I love this site: the stories that no one else reports. I might go one step further and suspect the real reason she's selling her 2 old TVs is because of the digital upgrade and her lack of desire to upgrade to that fancy new antenna. After all, she must be using an antenna because there are plenty of cable/satellite stations that don't report on the president.

While I'm not a media junkie by any stretch of the imagination (I couldn't name the actors in any of my favorite shows), from what I do see and hear Obama is everywhere. And if its not Obama it is liberal talking points or Bush bashing or Palin derangement syndrome.
I'll be watching a show, even a children's show, and bam! there's Obama or some poke at conservative values. Read a sports story and they're praising Obama or bashing Bush. What does the way Tiger played the 9th have to do with politics?
Maybe I'm paranoid, but are you really paranoid if something is really happening?
Wah wah wah. Typical

You said it yourself - if you're not a media junkie, then you've already failed to realize there are many, many stations that have no Obama coverage whatsoever. But I take it your post was just meant to pick a fight with a liberal. Now carry on with your children's TV viewing.
