Do they represent the people in their districts, or Nancy Pelosi?
![]() |
| The Spin Starts Here, or Do As I Say, Not As I Do |
Where do they stand on the federal regulation that served for four decades to remove issues of import from the radio airwaves and left us with 24-hours a day of liberal dominance of the radio airwaves? (Ronald Reagan removed the restriction in 1987, and the rest has been Rush Limbaugh-led broadcasting history.)
These Ds have been this quiet because they are not at liberty to discuss it. What we have been witnessing is a remarkable exhibition of partisan discipline. Last summer Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a diktat that no Donkey was to talk about the Fairness Doctrine, nor meet with anyone who wanted to talk about it. All the while she was repeatedly denying any Democratic interest in its revival.
And her subordinates have all come to heel. Pelosi herself, however, went on a bender and spilled the beans to John Gizzi in Human Events.
| Congressional Democrats need to remember that they are Representatives -- and just who it is they represent. |
Pelosi went on to say that in fact "the interest in my caucus is the reverse" and that New York Democratic Rep. "Louise Slaughter has been active behind this [revival of the Fairness Doctrine] for a while now." When asked if she herself supported the return of the Doctrine, she, again without hesitation, said "Yes."
Madame Speaker revealed herself to be not only virulently anti-First Amendment, but with the Rep. Slaughter disclosure regarding ongoing toil towards reinstatement less than fully affiliated with the truth.
And made an already difficult situation for Congressional Democrats even worse.
On June 11th, Congressman Pence, along with most of the Republican leadership, my boss Brent Bozell, talk radio star Laura Ingraham and many, many others, announced a multi-faceted, multi-organizational push to get the BFA out of committee and on to the floor for a vote.
With Pelosi's blockade in place, the only way for this to happen is with a discharge petition signed by 218 of Pence's fellow members. A month later, 197 are on board - and they're ALL Republicans. No Democrat has crossed up Pelosi, despite the fact that she threw them all under the bus, disobeying her own order and revealing their agenda. One with which few Americans outside the liberals inside the Washington Beltway agree.
The pressure on these holdout Donkeys continues to grow. Their constituents have let them hear it and have it, spending the last thirty days bombarding them with phone calls, emails, faxes and letters demanding that they sign the petition for Broadcaster Freedom. We here at the Media Research Center have already had more than 150,000 people sign on on our website.
Congressman Pence told me that many Democrats have approached him in the halls of the Cannon Office Building and the Capitol saying things like "My constituents are really giving it to me on the Fairness Doctrine and the BFA. Anything I can do, you let me know." To which the Congressman always replies "Great, sign the discharge petition," at which point his Donkey counterparts get flustered and skittish, then silent, and then turn and run (or at the very least walk briskly) away.
Which means that the Pelosi gag order, despite her own violation of it, is still rigidly in effect for every member of her Democratic caucus. And raises the question: just who is it that these Democrats are representing?
On this vital issue of free speech, it isn't the people who elected them. Their constituents have made their will known, loudly and in large numbers, and their cries have fallen on deaf Donkey ears. These Democrats have chosen fealty to the San Francisco Speaker over the commitment they made to the men and women who voted them into office.
Time is running out. Congressional Democrats need to remember that they are Representatives -- and just who it is they represent. Are they an army of zombies, in Washington to follow blindly the orders of Nancy Pelosi, regardless of how they conflict with the will of their people? Or are they in D.C. to be the voice of the people who put them there?
On this, their people have spoken. They want Congressman Pence's Broadcaster Freedom Act to have a full and fair up or down vote, and they have been demanding of their Representatives that they sign the discharge petition to make that happen.
It's time Congressional Democrats finally started listening.

Stations in the top 25 markets reach 90% of the nation, the remainder

audience has a short range to hear the station. Eliminate those in the

The fairness doctine will push conservative talk radio to new heights
that have never been seen before. As the demo-nazis started their
hostile take-over of talk radio, personalities such as Rush Limbaugh,
Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and Mark Levin would simply be pushed to
another medium.......satellite radio. If you thought Howard Stern the
shock jock received a ridiculous deal, can you imagine what Rush
Limbaugh would get? As a member of Rush 24/7 I would gladly follow him
over to satellite radio and laugh with him as the empire he leaves
behind crumbles like Air America did under liberal programming. The
socialists in this country already control the television news media
and we have all seen and heard how their ratings stack up against Fox
News. I say bring on the fairness doctrine and ruin talk radio. It
will just be another shining example of how conservatism and capitalism
will always kick the ass of liberalism and socialism. Sirius satellite
here we come.......LOL

July 17, 2008 - 23:52 ET by Dee BunkI still think the fairness doctrine is horrible, but you are right, we will find a way.
Unfortunately the way things are now even it feels like we have so little influence. I think conservatives need to get better organized in general. We don't write enough letters, make enough phone calls, or donate enough money. We all have to get more involved.
It is horrible

I don't wish for the "Fairness Doctrine" to come back as it is an assault on our 1st amendment "right to free speech". But our rights have been under assault from the left for decades and they are winning the fight. The road to socialism is just a slight grade so as not to alert the people that they are descending into marxism. Sad thing is that so many Americans can't see it happening. My comment about satellite radio was meant to give those who hadn't thought of it a glimmer of hope. The beauty of satellite radio is that it is not regulated by the government (FCC) which is why Howard Stern had to move there. Satellite radio is a shining example of capitalism at its finest. If there was a market for listening to peoples flatulence they could exist on satellite radio. Conservative talk radio would indoubtedly flourish and grow on satellite radio if it was forced to go there. I hope it doesn't have to but regardless of what happens the conservative voice WILL NOT BE SILENCED!

Last one - these are KC's excellent comments
July 17, 2008 - 23:47 ET by Dee BunkA cut and paste of KC's excellent comments below
In the days of the Founders, you sent representatives off to Washington
to represent the interests of your district. As we all know, the
Constitution never mentioned parties, because there weren't any. Back
then, each district was relatively homogenous. The representatives
advocated for the local industry, whatever that was. Since how the
representative was supposed to vote was obvious, the only remaining
issue was the candidates' character and skill. Even the development of
parties was originally based on the competition between a strong or
weak federal government, but people cared about that entirely based on
how it affected their local economy. But those days are long gone.
Slavery transformed politics from economic to ideological parties.
The Republicans weren't elected for their economic policies. They were
elected to preserve the union and abolish slavery. As ideology
increased, each district grew more diverse economically -- so diverse,
in fact, that the local economy no longer matters. We don't have
farming districts competing with ranching districts competing with
districts with a big factory. Every district has hundreds of businesses
in dozens of industries. Family farms are down the street from
corporate parks. The point: Locality now means nothing. The fact that I
live outside Baltimore tells absolutely nothing about me politically.
In the days of the Founders, it told everything.
Now, let's not kid each other. There's zero chance of any of that
changing in the foreseeable future. Even the Sith Lord Obama's idea of
change is for all of us to stop bickering and simply accept radical
liberalism. The existing parties have way too much control over the
political process to allow any change in it.

July 17, 2008 - 21:02 ET by Dee BunkI think he did it on purpose. For months he had only been attacking people's religion so he probably didn't care to be here if he couldn't do that. It looks like TM was spared - then today on the thread about Matthews new column he brought it up again and called Mathew names. I called him out as a troll because he brought up religion and the thread had nothing to do with it. Then Cool jumped in to chastise me - how dare I stick up for Matthew and not want another thread derailed! A moderator was smart enough to delete his attention getting name calling and then he ran right over here and made the comment he did at the top of this thread.
Now THE FIGHT CLUB is all over me. I'm so scared.
THE FIGHT ClUB dude has spoken
July 17, 2008 - 20:40 ET by Dee Bunkall must listen - always fight - never get along. Make sure to fight the most with conservatives - you get more points that way. Make sure you fight about non political issues too. That gives you more points in his FIGHT CLUB. The most points are handed out when the topic has absolutely no relevance to the thread like the one where TM's comments were deleted for name calling the Masthead and bringing up religion in a thread that had nothing at all to do with it. He was the first comment and Cool came right along to back him up.
FIGHT CLUB Dominates by tag teaming and counting on people being afraid to confront them. Sorry - not afraid of you.
Cool is the new King of THE FIGHT CLUB now that his best buddy has been suspended.

July 17, 2008 - 20:49 ET by Cool ArrowI can show you where bt has picked up on me where you left off. Does that make her a tagteamer too? NO. She has opinions too, which I do read, whether she respects me or not.
Stop with the cheerleading already. Do you think I care how big your Getalong Gang is?
