| And the Best of Randi Rhodes |
To reassign the estimable Bill Cosby's Fat Albert assessment, Air America's Randi Rhodes is reminiscent of school on Saturday -- no class.
Captured is a five-plus minute video (here below the fold) in which Rhodes -- utilizing language and manner more sailor than lady-like -- excoriates both the junior Senator from New York and former Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro at length as the "W" word (not "Woman"). She also touches on the Governor Eliot Spitzer story, commenting a bit on his "W" and her over-pricedness, and finds a little time to slam "Dina McGreevey", wife of disgraced former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey.
Rhodes was so gracefully serving as an emissary for the liberal radio network for the alleged benefit of one of its affiliates. So appreciative and proud was Air America that they suspended her - an apparently rare (in fact unprecedented -- big time h/t to The Radio Equalizer) disciplinary move by the network.
What is decidedly less exceptional are similar invective-laden screeds from the hack broadcaster whose show and network have fewer listeners than the number of people who read their VCR operator's manuals.
There was the time she aired a fake commercial which stated that Mitt Romney supporters were going to go on a mass-murdererous rampage were John McCain to win the nomination (no signs yet of Mormons taking to the streets).
Or how about when she declared that the Katrina-induced evacuation of New Orleans was "so much like the Holocaust", accusing the Bush Administration of Nazi-like handling of the people of the Big Easy. "People were taken one place. Their children were taken another place. ... And here you have people being loaded onto transportation vehicles, not being told where they're going, and their children are being taken someplace else...."
Or perhaps litigation is more your speed. In which case, we have the Randi Rhodes defamation lawsuit, filed by government contractor CACI International Inc. who was somehow and inexplicably offended to hear the elegant Ms. Rhodes accuse their employees of raping and murdering Iraqi civilians at Abu Ghraib prison.
There are many more than merely these.
You will note that none of these tirades netted her a suspension, while yesterday's did. The subterranean level of discourse remains the same throughout - the only difference is the target of the vitriol. Air America will stand by their Randi through all of the tort claims, the fascism-invokings and her general banality, so long as they are aimed at Conservatives and Republicans.
But they will not let stand an elementary-school naughty let fly against one of their own. For that, she must sit in the corner - in Time-Out - and await permission to rejoin the rest of her un-listened to class.
Please remember all of this the next time Rush Limbaugh accurately describes phony soldiers as phony soldiers and the Jurassic Press - and Congress - have one giant collective conniption fit.

April 3, 2008 - 16:40 ET by scamoramaIn those groups, she'd have been tossed as a wannabe. Say what you will about them, they believed in action. Rhodes is a mouth; that's all she is.
I used to catch bit of her show on the drive home (my other choices were Tom Lykis and Mike Savage, who I have no use for) for the comedic value. She lost that over a year ago.
She's pathetic.

TO BE FAIR...
April 4, 2008 - 01:21 ET by danybhoystratman,
I know where you are coming from, but to be fair to Rhodes, she enlisted in the United States Air Force in 77, & was honorably discharged. She was an Airman First Class.
No I know honor & class are not usually the things I think of when her name comes up, but she was busy serving in the military when the groups you mentioned were prominent.

April 5, 2008 - 01:23 ET by stratmanPoint taken danybhoy.
If I were to talk with her personally I would thank her for her service to the country while in the Air Force. Current military personel and veterans deserve at the very least a simple expression of gratitude from the citizens they helped to safeguard.
At some point, like any other person, current and former military personel do not get a free pass on criticism when they act like complete jackasses, such as Rhandi Rhodes, DKos founder Markos Moulitsas Zúniga, and Scott Thomas who's phony article "Shock Troops" was published in The New Republic. Of course there is also John Kerry and his slanderous testimony before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations in 1971, the pathetic throwing away of (not) "his" medals, and his (didn't happen) Cambodian riverboating on Christmas Eve 1968 "seared" into his mind.
The groups I mentioned were all essentially defunct by 1977.

I also served, but that says something only about a two year period of my life. Formative? Yes. Definitive? No.

I would not have thanked
April 5, 2008 - 11:41 ET by stratmanI would not have thanked Oswald or Timothy McVeigh for their service given their inexcusable and abhorent behavior post military service. They can rot in hell.
Wright and Rhodes have displayed disgusting behaviour but have not sunk beyond the point where I could or would not be appreciative of their service if the situation for that type of interaction presented itself. That said, I would not go out of my way to compliment them.
From the little I have heard, I don't like nor would I care to associate with anyone we've mentioned.

April 4, 2008 - 01:35 ET by danybhoyMany Obama supporters are angry, but that's not in play here. Randi Rhodes has always been angry, at least when I've tried to listen to her. She could be supporting puppies being cute & come across as a lunatic.
The funny thing is, since I have XM, I can listen to AAR on channel 167, & Rhodes ain't the biggest whackjob on AAR, Mike Malloy is straight-jacket crazy, he just does'nt go to the F-Bomb the way Rhodes did here. Just for the record, Malloy is on AAR on XM-167, but is on something called Nova-M Radio, & his show is carried by some of the few AAR stations left. Plus since he comes on at 10pmEST/9pmCST, & most of these stations have singles that can't be heard unless your driving within a couple of blocks of the transmitter, so no one knows who he is.

I Caused Air America to Hire Randi Rhodes
April 3, 2008 - 19:27 ET by P.J. GladnickOkay, a confession here. Your humble correspondent was the one who enabled Randi Rhodes to be hired by Air America. I kid you not. Let me recount how this happened:
In July of 2003, I was "typing" the "Al Gore At The Movies" reviews which appeared in the Laissez Faire Electronic Times on a regular basis. In the review of the movie, The Italian Job, "Al Gore" discussed Randi Rhodes at length. Although the Laissez Faire Electronic Times is no longer online, you can read the review reprinted HERE at the Free Republic. Keep in mind that at the time, Randi was only known in South Florida. Here is what "Al Gore" said about her:
Anshell never hired Randy mainly because it faded from existence. However, this review did bring Randi to the attention of Air America and the rest is history. Oh, and Randi did send me an e-mail sort of thanking me a while later.
So there you have the entire bizarre reason why Randi was brought to national exposure in the first place. Just as a goof for an "Al Gore" movie review.

April 3, 2008 - 20:30 ET by lunaticcringeradioi like to play the game, retarded, head injury, or drunk whenever i hear randi rhodes talk. but i aboslutely have to defend her right to say what she wants to no matter what. i don't think she should have been suspended for saying something unpopular amoungst her cohorts outside of her job, as opposed to when she is on the microphone. i have taken this stand many many many times before and just because i personally despise this butterhog radio host for everything from her speech pattern, to her appearence, to her political stooopidity, i will defend her right to say what she manages to conjour up as a thought in her fetal alcohol syndrome brain. i can't stand her but i force myself to tune into the loser party to keep tabs on them, but if i ever plan to defend something that michelle maulkin(oooh i just need to take a second here to address a quick fantasy.........................ok) or ann coulter, or neal boortz(no fantasy there), then i have to consistanly have to support the losers out there or else i can't very well call myself a conservative.

April 3, 2008 - 23:28 ET by ckc1227I agree, she can say pretty much whatever she wants. And her employer can suspend her for it if they choose. I have no problem with either.
What's interesting about this story is that she was most likely suspended because she spoke badly about democrats. Had she said these things about republicans/conservatives, there would be no issue. It's not about what she said, it's who she said it about.

April 4, 2008 - 00:03 ET by shawn228She did not say any of these comments on the radio. She said them at a event outside of AA. Dems are such f**king hypocrites when they say they want freedom of speech.
Shawn, I agree, even though I am no fan of hers.
April 4, 2008 - 00:30 ET by R D HelmAs a libertarian, I have a huge problem with anyone getting suspended or fired for what they say, period.
As you rightly point out, she wasn't even doing her radio show when she said these things. Yet, even if she was doing her show, I would still have a problem with her being penalized for what she might say.
My suspicion is that Broom Hilda might have had something to do with this, either directly or indirectly.
Remember what happened to David Shuster, who, IMHO rightly pointed out that Hill Billary was pimping Chelsea out.

Not to defend her, because, well, she's an idiot, but she was attending this event as a representative for AA.
Maybe that's why she's being punished.
April 4, 2008 - 07:47 ET by sarcasmoThink about it, she's making offensive/controversial statements when she's NOT doing her show, at their "event"? I'm totally with the free speech right for her to be offensive, but they're paying Randi to be offensive on her radio show. At their own schmoozefests, they're paying Randi to talk nice, hopefully not drink too-much booze, & most-importantly kiss the asses of rich Democrats who might buy ad time, keeping in mind the fact that some of them may be Hillary-fans.
