Like His Dad? MSNBC Hypes Ron Reagan to Trash GOP as a 'Haven for Bigots'

MSNBC on Thursday again featured Ron Reagan to trade on the legacy of his father, trashing  the Republican Party as a "haven for bigots." The liberal son of the former president appeared on Hardball to slime the GOP and Mitt Romney for discriminating against gays.

Matthews tossed Reagan a softball, complimenting his "Republican family" for not discriminating against gays. The son of a Republican president slimed, "Since the civil rights era, the Republican Party has been a haven for bigots." He added that not "all" GOP members are bigots, but the party "has provided a refuge for bigots and it has exploited their fear and anger." [See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Reagan appeared to discuss a gay Romney aide who resigned from the campaign. Matthews deemed this a "witch hunt."

Reagan continued, insisting that in addition to Mexicans and African Americans, "Gay people will always, and are still to this day, are people who under certain circumstances can be demonized and they are demonized on the right."

A transcript of the exchange can be found below:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Let me go back to Ron this because I want to get some thought- Ron, you're thinking about this. Growing up in a Republican family, one thing I really liked about your family, although they were conservative, your parents, they didn't care about gay people.

RON REAGAN: No.

MATTHEWS: This whole thing has gotten to be- metamorphosing into this weird witch hunt thing going on. Your thoughts?

REAGAN: Yeah, it has, but this isn't entirely new, and it goes back farther than the '80s or '90s. Since the civil rights era, the Republican Party has been a haven for bigots. That is not to say that all Republicans are bigots, far from it. But, it has provided a refuge for bigots and it has exploited their fear and anger. It could be communists, of course. It could be African-Americans, Mexicans, women who want to stand up for their rights, but the most reliable "they" that the Republican Party has had, and there's always a they in the Republican Party, it's out there to undo family values and somehow drag down the America of their dreams, the most reliable they are gay people. Gay people will always, and are still to this day, are people who under certain circumstances can be demonized and they are demonized on the right.

MATTHEWS: Well, Allen West down in Florida hasn't gotten the message yet. He's still going after what he calls the 81 communists in the Democratic caucus. Anyway, let's get back to serious business. I worked in Capitol Hill for years, as you know. I knew a lot of gay people worked up there. They were part of- As somebody said to me today, that place would close down if they didn't have gay people working there. At all levels, from the robo-rooms to the top aides. They were there on both sides of the aisle, right? So, how did these women survive culturally, socially, morally, in an environment where this kind of gay bashing still goes on as of this moment? Because Romney- Mitt Romney will not defend this guy. He will not say, come back to the campaign. Right now, if he's watching this show, Governor Romney, ask the guy to come back, we stop talking about it. But he won't.

Reagan Vs. Reagan

Submitted by djwolf12 on Thu, 05/03/2012 - 6:52pm.

M-BS-NBC, well, DOESN'T HAVE THE GUTS to put Michael Reagan on their network. They settle for this clown to be the be all, end all know it all about Republicans and twist their progressive narrative to fit the story of the day. I'd love to see Michael Reagan debate Ronnie Jr. in politics. Michael does it every day. Ronnie just goes on M-BS-NBC and chucks hate bombs and hides behind skirts. Chickensh*t.

Terminal Rhetoric

Submitted by guein on Thu, 05/03/2012 - 7:43pm.

Ron Reagan is a prime example of why there can not be any consensus reached between liberals and conservatives in the current political climate. We are simply too far apart ideologically and rhetoric like this only serves to widen the chasm.

Feel sorry for young Ron

Submitted by TheHistorian on Thu, 05/03/2012 - 7:50pm.

After all, with the same name, he has had to live in the shadow of a giant. It could make someone bitter.

Ron, grow up. Republicans don't care what you do with your genitalia, it is what you do with your mouth talking about your genitalia that upsets us. We believe in equal opportunity, not equal outcome that is decided by some bureaucrat. If you kiss up to the bureaucrat, you are then considered "less equal" despite really having more. That is the whole reason for 'gay rights', 'affirmative action', feminism, etc. Did you know that in the Islam that you admire that being 'gay' would get you a neck deep haircut?

Finally, someone in your family should kick your a$$ for the ways you have defamed your Father. Ever read the Bible, Ron? ""Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you."? Where is YOUR mouth, Ron (besides on one of those)? Start showing some respect for the man that gave you life.

Now for history. Ever hear of the KKK, the poll tax? The filibuster on the 1959 Civil Rights Act? Those were inventions of the Democrats, NOT REPUBLICANS. But like many of the left, Ron, you wouldn't know history if it were standing next to you. You are out there worshiping Obama, FDR, and Woodrow Wilson, three of the people who are responsible for making this country less free.

Chrissy, it never mattered with whom you spent your nights; it was what you did during your days. We saw several Republican abusers (both gay and straight) given the door by their party. Yet people like Bill Clinton, Teddy Kennedy, and Gerry Stubbs wound up being lauded by you guys. It is NOT the sexual orientation that matters, or how you treat other people. It is your party politics, pure and simple, that drives your party. Prove it isn't so, Chrissy.

The guy didn't resign because he gay, he had to resign because he tweeted some pretty nasty stuff about women, like Calista and Hilary. It's one of those things that's o.k. to do when your on the left, see Lawrence O'Donnell, but if you're on the right, forget about it.

But of course the anti gay crap fits the left's narrative, and most voters are to uninformed to know the truth.

Poor Ron Jr., I suppose I

Submitted by lesterwink23 on Thu, 05/03/2012 - 8:30pm.

Poor Ron Jr., I suppose I might be able to understand why he is so far removed from his father's greatness and values. Being the son of the greatest American president of the 20th century and only being able to get gigs on a flea-bag outpost like MSDNC, who only invites him on to piss on his father's legacy, has got to be really goading him. It's like a preacher's kid rebelling by listening to death metal and getting skull tattoos, except he's a man in his 50s. Quite sad, really.

Ron Reagan Jr - why tigers eat their young.

Submitted by drsamherman on Thu, 05/03/2012 - 11:42pm.

If there is an earthquake in Southern California, it's Ronald Reagan Sr. turning over in his grave at the thought of his sexually and morally ambiguous son lying through his teeth.

He didn't earn the name Repulsive Ron Junior by mistake. It is not surprising the lefties embraced him. They don't give a damn about him personally--they just love the idea of a Benedict Arnold son crapping on his father's legacy. Tells you what kind of scum THEY are.

I guess he's right

Submitted by jon_torlin on Fri, 05/04/2012 - 9:06am.

I don't consider myself a Republican at least not in the GOP establishment sense, but in the conservative sense, and after reading what Ron said, I have to admit he's right.

Based on his assertions, I am a bigot, a racist, whatever you want to say about it.  I don't approve of the gays who have a militant agenda and are trying to force into our faces(gee, isn't that what the libs accuse the TEA party of, tea-bagging?) that same agenda expecting more rights than everyone else(ain't no equal about it), and etc even though they represent less than 20% of the population at large.  But nevermind, just cut that sentence short after "I don't approve of the gays."

I don't approve of the blacks who have the agenda of continously dividing the Americans on a race issue that they themselves always bring up just when you think we get past it, like Jackson and Sharpton and DuhOne(even though he's more white and more arabian than he is black, but he's a fraud anyway), but cut that sentence short to "I don't approve of the blacks."

I don't approve of the women who are out there making so-called issues about contraception and abortions and etc, but cut that short to "I don't approve fo the women."

You get the idea.  So according to the above and Ron's assertions, I'm a bigot because I don't approve of gays, blacks, and women.

Have a nice bigoted day.

-Jon
