CBS Downplays Graphic Afghanistan Photos as a GOP 'Distraction,' ABC Minimizes

CBS's Bill Plante on Friday downplayed graphic photos of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan posing with severed body parts of suicide bombers as a GOP "distraction," insisting that Republicans were "somehow" trying to portray this (and other issues) as a failure of leadership. None of the networks wondered if this reflected poorly on Barack Obama.

Since the Los Angeles Times first reported the 2010 pictures, ABC has only offered one report, airing on World News. CBS allowed a lone segment on the April 18 Evening News and a brief mention by Plante on Friday's This Morning. He spun, "...Republicans keep pointing out several recent distractions: this incident, the troops posing with body parts in Afghanistan, and the big party that the General Services Administration threw itself in Las Vegas." [See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Plante derisively added, "And they're suggesting that, somehow, all this adds up to a lack of presidential leadership." Somehow? The correspondent continued, "One thing to remember, of course: it's an election year."

NBC provided the most coverage, so far, on the photographs. The network featured full reports on Wedensday's Today and Nightly News. Today followed up with news briefs on Thursday. On April 18, reporter Jim Miklaszewski explained:

JIM MIKLASZEWSKI: These controversial photos taken by American soldiers were actually taken two years ago, but it makes them no less embarrassing today. The uncropped photos are too graphic and disturbing to show on television. In this shot, Afghan soldiers are holding up the severed legs of a dead Taliban suicide bomber while American soldiers in the background mug for the camera. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta Secretary Leon Panetta today strongly condemned the soldiers' conduct.

When George W. Bush was president, journalists repeatedly tried to link embarrassing incidents that occurred in the military to the then-President. Yet, there has been no similar effort to showcase these current photos as bad news for Barack Obama.

A partial transcript of the April 20 CBS This Morning segment can be found below:

PALIN: The buck stops with the President, and he's really got to start cracking down and seeing some heads roll. You know, he's got to get rid of these people at the head of these agencies where so many things, obviously, are amiss.

PLANTE (on-camera): Well, the President did talk about the scandal last weekend when he was in Colombia. He said he'd be angry if the allegations turned out to be true. Now, the White House is trying to keep its distance, but Republicans keep pointing out several recent distractions: this incident, the troops posing with body parts in Afghanistan, and the big party that the General Services Administration threw itself in Las Vegas. And they're suggesting that, somehow, all this adds up to a lack of presidential leadership. One thing to remember, of course: it's an election year. Charlie, Erica?

How quickly they "forget" Abu Ghraib

Submitted by Galvanic on Fri, 04/20/2012 - 3:47pm.

When those images were discovered, the MSM blasted Bush's leadership, and the leadership of the military chain of command. The HIll's Democrats -- eager to distance themselves from their endorsement of the authorization to invade Iraq -- were beside themselves.

I guess it all depends who occupies the White House, eh?

Liberals want a '2 sets of rules' world....

Submitted by Slyrr on Fri, 04/20/2012 - 4:26pm.

Amen. When the liberal left thought they could use it as a weapon to hurt Bush and the GOP, they splashed pictures from Abu Graihb on the news non-stop, every day, trying to pin it directly on 'Bush's war'.

Dick Durbin took to the floor of the senate to call our troops 'nazis, soviets in their gulags or some mad regime like Pol Pot'. Now that abuse is happening under Obama, it's 'no big deal' to the media or the Democrats.

The liberals in politics, education and the media are a bunch of two-faced swindlers who want a '2 set of rules' world, where there's 1 set of rules to benefit themselves, and another set of rules that punishes everybody else.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

So very true and

so very obvious that the media continue, on a daily basis, to unflinchingly and proudly portray themselves as the conscience of Republicans whilst leaving the opposition party completely unscathed. We are all governed by the media and those who deny that fact are no better than those looney global warming skeptics.

I think this, the Koran

Submitted by ForeverOnTheRight on Fri, 04/20/2012 - 3:56pm.

I think this, the Koran burning, and Abu Ghaib could well have been handled differently if the MSM did not shout it from the mountain top. Seems to me that the MSM is into creating news these days, besides stumping for Obama's relection. But that may be in trouble, Romney and Obama are neck in neck in the polls and it's not even May yet. I hope Romney gets ahead in the polls by a big number. Anybody But Obama!

LOL, nice screen of Plante! "Mommy, they're picking on Barry!"

Submitted by SickofLibs on Fri, 04/20/2012 - 4:14pm.

Yeah, Barry really has been showing some awesome presidential leadership lately.

Let's see, so far he doesn't done squat about Whoregate, Cadavergate, Vegasgate or F&F. Imagine this pansy heading up a major corporation? The board would've tossed him out on his bony ass within days if he did not act decisively when a scandal broke.

But get into a fist fight with your neighbor in your backyard, and he'll be issuing statements left and right.

"When George W. Bush was president, journalists repeatedly tried to link embarrassing incidents that occurred in the military to the then-President. Yet, there has been no similar effort to showcase these current photos as bad news for Barack Obama." They are being honest about these embarassing incidents not being linked to Obama. As far as I know they should not be. On the other hand, needless to say, they where totally dishonest about the embarrassing monents being linked to George W Bush. Jerks!

Karma's a bitch, ain't it?

Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 04/21/2012 - 3:25pm.

"And they're suggesting that, somehow, all this adds up to a lack of presidential leadership. One thing to remember, of course: it's an election year."

What was it that Canadate Obama said. back in 2008? Oh yes: "What’s more, in the dark halls of Abu Ghraib and the detention cells of Guantanamo, we have compromised our most precious values. What could have been a call to a generation has become an excuse for unchecked presidential power."

The "dark halls of Abu Ghraib," eh? Humm, Karma's a bitch, ain't it?
