MSNBC's Martin Bashir Outrageously Compares Rick Santorum to Mass Murderer Joseph Stalin

By Scott Whitlock | February 14, 2012 | 17:40

Scott Whitlock's picture

Ultra liberal Martin Bashir hit a new low on Tuesday, outrageously comparing Rick Santorum to mass-murdering dictator Joseph Stalin. In a fit of vitriol, the MSNBC anchor also connected the Republican to George Orwell's Big Brother from 1984. However, the most repugnant moment came when Bashir spewed, "If you listen carefully to Rick Santorum, he sounds more like Stalin than Pope Innocent III." [See video below. MP3 audio here.]

What prompted this left-wing hate from MSNBC? Bashir began by playing a clip of Santorum in bad lighting. He then contrasted, "...When we last saw the Republican front-runner Rick Santorum speaking before a crowd yesterday, all we could think of was George Orwell's novel 1984 about a society dominated by the most extreme form of totalitarianism." Before showing a clip of the movie version of 1984, he added, "See if you can spot the similarities."

Bashir then highlighted Santorum and a seemingly unrelated clip from the film. Big Brother shown denouncing, "One week from now, in this very square, we shall have a demonstration of our resolve."

The similarities? According to Bashir, "Rick Santorum holds some pretty stern views on a number of important issues and he regularly sounds like a theocrat. For example, he's asserted that the right to privacy does not exist and has equated same sex relationships with bestiality."

(Is Santorum Stalin or a theocrat? Considering that Stalin's Russia was rigidly atheistic, he can't be both.)

Bashir also included this nasty remark: "In reviewing his book It Takes a Family, one writer said "Mr. Santorum has one of the finest minds of the 13th century."

On January 6, 2012, Bashir warned Newt Gingrich to stop using hateful language "before someone gets killed."

When Sarah Palin made a Stalin reference, MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell on the January 30th Last Word, sputtered, "If I am reading that correctly, Sarah Palin is accusing Mitt Romney of being Stalin-esque. This can't -- can this get any better for Democrats? I don`t think it can."

A transcript of February 14 Martin Bashir segment, which aired at 3:59pm EST, follows:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

MARTIN BASHIR: It's time now to clear the air and when we last saw the Republican front-runner Rick Santorum speaking before a crowd yesterday, all we could think of was George Orwell's novel 1984 about a society dominated by the most extreme form of totalitarianism. See if you can spot the similarities.

RICK SANTORUM: -The loud voices that support the Republican Party and the conservative cause!

BIG BROTHER (from 1984): One week from now, in this very square, we shall have a demonstration of our resolve.

BASHIR: The similarities with George Orwell's novel and that movie are not just superficial. No, Rick Santorum holds some pretty stern views on a number of important issues and he regularly sounds like a theocrat. For example, he has asserted that the right to privacy does not exist and has equated same sex relationships with bestiality.

BIG BROTHER: Brothers and sisters, the endless catalogue of bestial atrocities that will inevitably ensue from this appalling act, must, can, and will be terminated.

BASHIR: Mr. Santorum has pledged to repeal all federal funding for contraception and says individual states should be allowed to outlaw any kind of birth control.

BIG BROTHER: The forces of darkness and the treasonable maggots who collaborate with them, must, can and will be wiped from the face of the Earth!

BASHIR: In reviewing his book It Takes a Family, one writer said "Mr. Santorum has one of the finest minds of the 13th century." But I'm not so sure. If you listen carefully to Rick Santorum, he sounds more like Stalin than Pope Innocent III. Thanks so much for watching.

Martin, how do you honestly believe yourself to be a Christian?

Submitted by Mike Bratton on Tue, 02/14/2012 - 6:33pm.

The Bible says "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks."  Or, in your case, the heart and the TelePrompTer.

Nevertheless, how is it you viciously attack Rick Santorum for espousing a Bible-based point of view when you allege to share the fundamentals of that point of view?

You can't have it both ways, Martin.

Funny--the line from 1984 talks about wiping out "maggots" from the face of the earth.  That's what Margaret Sanger wanted to do, and she founded Planned Parenthood to do just that.  Rick Santorum wants to stop Margaret Sanger's work.

"Maggots"

Submitted by ronljl on Tue, 02/14/2012 - 8:03pm.

JeffC; If you will forgive me for hopefully making a correction to what you are saying. "...wiping out "maggots" from the face of the earth." Is not quite what Margaret Sanger was about. She was into killing off, aka aborting, as many black babies as possible from the face of the earth.

We [conservatives] do not think blacks are "maggots," nor does our record even lean in that direction. Progressives and Liberals, it would appear to be a resounding, yes. Santorum is working on UNDOING what Margaret Sanger and later generations of "like minded" Sangerettes [using 'ettes' must a sexist phrasing, sorry, not!] have been striving towards for nearly a 100 years.

Simple straight forward logic; Sanger was a racist and wished to rid the world of blacks through the use of abortion, therefore if you are in favor of abortion in this country, you must support Sanger's goals of racism too. Simple.

Submitted by ronljl on Wed, 02/15/2012 - 3:24am.

No argument here. I'm sure you are quite right. It was a dark period in our history of forced eugenics [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_Integrity_Act_of_1924] and semi-volunteering the abortion of blacks and “less-than-desirable” whites in this country.

It was a sad and deplorable part of our history. Just to bad that it’s not behind us; that it still lingers in the shadows and in organizations like Planned Parenthood.

Winston, gets a picture of life in the future by O'brien

Submitted by lrgon on Tue, 02/14/2012 - 8:27pm.

"... imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever."

In context: "There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always—do not forget this, Winston—always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. ... the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless.

If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever."
—Part III, Chapter III, Nineteen Eighty-Four

Seems that those promoting "Big brother" are not only politicians like Rick Santorum but Bashir and his MSNBC bosses who daily bleat out "doublethink" and are on a constant 24/7 mode to make those that challenge their lies "unpersons" via the "Ministry of Truth" that is allied with the central government authorities.

Both political parties in America have contributed to the growth of government , and while Bashir is correct about Santorum, (check his votes in congress if you think Senator Santorum is not a ally of building "big brother") the liberal pundit can throw in Obama in his Orwellian analysis.

Conservative rightfully fear another 4 more years of "Obama-think," but no one built "big brother' more than Bush 43. Dubya was on an 8 year war, surveillance and bureaucracy binge that comes closer to the "Stalin-esque" label than Santorum but only because Santorum has not had 8 years in the White House to wage "perpetual war for perpetual peace."

Stalin persecuted the church and drove it to virtual nonexistence in Russia. who, if anyone, is acting like Stalin right now?...I'll give you a hint: His initials are B.O.

This really was about the worst "news" clip I've seen in a while- its definitely early front runner for turd of the year. Maybe Bashir is upset about being snubbed at the Dishonor Awards last time.

Ironically, the only Orwell comparison I see is with Bashir himself: he reminds me of a pig from Animal Farm.

By the way, Martin, I'd be careful about bandying around those Orwell analogies, if I were you. Don't forget, the "Ministry of Truth" was actually a media news source, just like MSNBC!

Can't Have the Words "Bashir" & "Credibility" in Same Sentence

Submitted by Motormouth KOS on Wed, 02/15/2012 - 1:10pm.

I remind you of the following to show how this lying clown sells sensationalism, not truth...

In 2003, Bashir conducted a series of interviews with pop singer Michael Jackson. Following the broadcast, which was viewed by 14 million in the UK and 38 million in the US, several media personalities accused Bashir of yellow journalism, claiming that he deliberately doctored the recordings in order to paint Jackson in an unflattering light, as well as emphasizing the allegations of child molestation made against Jackson. Even the rag called The New York Times called Bashir's journalism style "callous self-interest masked as sympathy."

In his defense and in response, Jackson and his personal cameraman released a rebuttal interview, which showed Bashir complimenting Jackson for the "spiritual" quality of the Neverland Ranch, thus contradicting the journalist's previous statements that it was a "dangerous place" for children. Bashir also describes Jackson as a wonderful father and says that Jackson's relationship with his children "almost makes him weep".

I am no defender of the King of Pop, but this little vignette shows how deep MSLSD has to dig in the gutter to find charlatans to come on the air and utter lie after lie.

Could Bashir have been correct about Santorum's voice?

Submitted by MOSwas71331 on Thu, 02/16/2012 - 8:14pm.

Bashir said, "If you listen carefully to Rick Santorum, he sounds more like Stalin than Pope Innocent III." Although Bashir undoubtedly (and ridiculously) meant that Santorum's advocated policies are bad, his statement uses the verbs "listen" and "sounds." I've heard Santorum speak, and I've heard recordings of Stalin speaking. As Pope Innocent III died in 1216, I've no idea what his voice sounded like. Perhaps Bashir has channelled Pope Innocent III, and he truly believes Santorum's voice is more similar to Stalin's voice than to that Pope's voice.

We already know Bashir is an idiot, and he reinforces that conclusion every time he speaks in front of a TV camera. Perhaps someday MSNBC will realize that people with English accents aren't necessarily intelligent.
