Matthews Preposterously Claims Obama Added 'Only 13 People' to Federal Workforce [UPDATED: Matthews Re-Records Audio]

By Scott Whitlock | January 12, 2012 | 18:44

Scott Whitlock's picture

On Thursday's Hardball, Chris Matthews preposterously insisted that Barack Obama added "only 13 people" to the federal workforce in 2009 and that the total number of individuals working for the U.S. government (as of 2010) was 4,443.

[UPDATE, 8:55 PM EST: Two hours later, in the otherwise identical 7 PM EST re-play, MSNBC inserted a new graphic and a new audio overlay in which Matthews corrected his incompetence without noting any change from his first broadcast: Video below features both versions. In the 5 PM EST hour, Matthews claimed “the federal workforce totaled forty-four hundred and thirty people in 2009 when Obama took office. In 2010, a year later, the number increased to forty-four forty-three people – a difference of only thirteen people.” In the re-do, Matthews realized “the federal workforce totaled four million, four hundred and thirty thousand in 2009...”]

According to the Office of Personnel Management (the source Matthews cited), there were 4,430,000 federal employees by 2010 and the President increased the numbers by 13,000, not 13.

It's bizarre that Matthews would credulously repeat such obviously wrong information. After making his grossly incorrect statement, the liberal anchor lectured, "I know it's always great rhetoric to say the government is ballooning, exploding with people. The government is getting bigger and bigger to this leviathan. And it's not." Except, it is.

Audio, MP3 clip which matches the above video with excerpts from the 5 and 7 PM EST editions of Hardball.

It's unclear whether the OPM's numbers come from the start of 2009 or the end, after stimulus. A fairer comparison would be from 2008, the end of Bush's term. Between 2008 and 2010, the federal workforce (total, including military) expanded by 237,000.

To suggest that the government isn't "ballooning" or "getting bigger" is absurd. Fiscal spending in 2008 was just under $3 trillion. It was $3.7 trillion by 2010. That's an increase of more than 23 percent.

Shouldn't have Matthews (or one of his producers) realized what he was saying? Will MSNBC correct?

Matthews during the 5 PM EST live program:

“Well, here’s the numbers, by the way, about the size of government. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel, the federal workforce totaled forty-four hundred and thirty people in 2009 when Obama took office. In 2010, a year later, the number increased to forty-four forty-three people – a difference of only thirteen people.”

Matthews, in a new audio track for the otherwise unchanged 7 PM EST feed:

“By the way, here are the numbers. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel, the federal workforce totaled four million, four hundred and thirty thousand in 2009 when Obama took office. And in 2010 that number essentially stayed the same: just over four million, four hundred and forty thousand.”

At 5 PM, the on-screen graphic listed 2009 federal employees at “4,430" and 2010 at “4,443.” Two hours later, the on-screen graphic was updated to “4.43 MILLION” and “4.44 MILLION.”

A transcript of the January 12 5 PM EST segment can be found below:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

5:20

CHRIS MATTHEWS: But here he [Romney]  is directing his guns at Washington.

MITT ROMNEY: This president puts his faith in government. We put our faith in the American people. This President is making the federal government bigger, burdensome and bloated. I will make the federal government simpler, smaller, and smarter. He raised- He raised the national debt. I will cut cap and balance the federal budget. This President- This President has enacted job-killing regulations. I will eliminate them.

MATTHEWS: Well, here's the numbers, by the way, about the size of government. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel, the federal workforce totaled 4,430 people in 2009 when Obama took office. In 2010, a year later, the number increased to 4,443, a difference of only 13 people. And local government during that time has gotten smaller dramatically. In 2009, it was 14.9 million people were working for state and local governments.

But, the number dropped to 14.7 in 2010, according to the Census Bureau. So, you know, John Heilemann, I know it's always great rhetoric to say the government is ballooning, exploding with people. The government is getting bigger and bigger to this leviathan. And it's not.  And if anything, there's been the reality of the economic reports to come out every first Friday of every month, which are government jobs have been depleted.

They are shrinking. Everybody who lives in places like Scranton knows the pressure on mayors. And Philadelphia, a place I'm familiar with, you're always letting people go. What is- How can they keep selling the idea we have this gigantic growth of government when we also hear daily reports of lost jobs in government?

JOHN HEILEMANN (New York Magazine): Well, Chris, what I think Mitt Romney and others who believe that the federal's deficit's growth is a huge problem for the American economy and long-term prosperity, they will focus on the growth of government in the sense of the monetary, the fiscal growth of government. The size of the deficit. The size of debt. That's what he's going to hit on rather than the specific numbers. I think where he also-

MATTHEWS: But that's a result of the aging population and unemployment. You know that. It's not because they create new ideas to spend money. It's more people turn 65 every day than the day before. More people are getting sicker and  using health care because they've understood what they can get from doctor's and hospital care- are using it more than ever. Those and more people are unemployed than ever before and that's why unemployment benefits and all kinds of benefits are going up.

Amazing, I think even my 9 y.o. niece could comprehend that there would be significantly more than 4,400 federal employees! There would be way more than that in DC alone. I wish that were the case other than the military though.

The Matthews Moment 2012

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 01/12/2012 - 9:24pm.

This is worth remembering as this amateur continues to provide us with insight into election politcs throughout 2012.

How is it that a self-proclaimed veteran political analyst who doesn't catch such a ridiculous error on that employment table -- compounded when he did the math and declared the Federal increase was only 13 people -- can find hidden meanings in conservative quotes and agenda?

The short answer is (of course): He can't.

This pairs up well with his 'thrill up my leg" statement.

Did the two guests fall for this nonsense that the federal government only has 4,443 employees?

I can understand how a talking common tater, (better known as a spud), can misread something on a teleprompter as the text goes by.  But to do a whole segment based on how the federal government only has 4,443 employees is absolutely amazing.

I would hate to be the producer who put together this story.  On second thought, getting fired from MBSNBC and Chris Matthew's show may just be the luckiest thing to ever happen to this guy.  Could turn his life around.

Hay, Chrissy, those numbers are in the thousands. In 2009, the executive branch had over 2,774 THOUSAND employes, not including military members. That's over two MILLION, seven hundred, and seventy four thousand (2,774,000) employees in the executive branch alone! Total federal employes added up to over four million, four hundred, and thirty thousand (4,430,000) employees. That's not a balloon, that's a gas giant!

Submitted by DontFeedTheTrolls on Fri, 01/13/2012 - 6:36am.

Just a guess here: 4,443,000 Federal employees + 14,770,000 State employees = 19,213,000 total, average salary and benefits package $100,000 each.

At an average $75,000 per year salary, each private sector worker pays about $6,000 in taxes to support those government workers.

So how many private sector jobs does it take to pay all those government workers?

I come up with over 325,000,000 private sector jobs needed to support all those government workers.

Just a rough guess, as I said.

The level of general intelligence and professionalism (or lack there of) at MSNBC.
Government statistics released by almost any agency are almost always "in thousands" according to the column headings. Any moron knows that. Plus as others have noted, no person with even a modicum of common sense whould have thought that the Federal Government employed only 4,430 people!

This is what happens when ideology trumps everything in what you do. Why didn't any of the many people who were involved in that segment being broadcast accross the nation just simply pay attention to what was being claimed, and say "hold on there, this isn't right"? Because it met their ideological need to support Obama and attack his critics no matter what.

And then there is Chris himself who reads whatever rolls across that teleprompter regardles. Apparently they don't even reherse the shows anymore or proof read the copy. They just stick him out there and he starts reading.

Unless of course the 5pm EST show is realy just a dress rehersal for the 7pm EST show...

...to use a bit of liberal logic. His original number of 4430 was likely right, or possibly even inflated a bit, if looked at their way. Let's look at it a bit, shall we? The number quoted did not include military. The President is in charge of the executive branch. POTUS is also commander and chief of the military. Ergo, the executive branch is military! So, nobody to count there. Then there is the legislative branch...congress. Hmm, only congress can officially declare war. Ergo, congress is part of the military! So, nobody there to count. Who is left...the courts. Well, they get to decide if the other two branches are being legal and constitutional. And since the other two are military, and everyone knows only military courts have jurisdiction over the military, the courts must me military too!

So, just where do these 4400 people work in the government that is not military?
