Stephanopoulos Gloats: Will My Interview With New Accuser 'Spell the End' for Cain?

By Scott Whitlock | November 30, 2011 | 13:28

George Stephanopoulos, who as a Democratic operative in the '90s coordinated with ABC to save Bill Clinton from scandal, on Wednesday teased an exclusive with Herman Cain's accuser, openly gloating, "Will our interview spell the end of the one-time front-runner's presidential bid?" [See video below. MP3 audio here. ]

The Good Morning America co-host could barely contain himself as he opened the show: "Cain's final turn. She claims to be Herman Cain's 13-year-mistress. Now, Ginger White is speaking out live, here, exclusively, on GMA as his campaign reels from her allegations." An ABC graphic hyped, "End of Days for Cain Campaign?"

Reporter John Berman wondered if "victory is now impossible" for the Republican.

The contrast between Stephanopoulos' excitement over Cain's accuser and ABC's hesitancy for Bill Clinton scandals is stark. On page 26 of  "Pattern of Deception," the MRC's Tim Graham explained how the network assisted the 1992 presidential candidate deal with past draft problems:

Then, one of Clinton's ROTC officers, Clinton Jones, released a 1969 letter from Clinton he had kept for years thanking ROTC commander Eugene Holmes: "I wan to thank you, not just for saving me from the draft, but for being so kind and decent to me last summer, when I was as low as I ever have been."

The response was protective. ABC producer Mark Halperin handed Clinton aide George Stephanopoulos the Jones letter on February 10. [Strange Bedfellows author Tom] Rosenstiel recalled the discussions within ABC: [World News Tonight producer Paul] Friedman did not want to go with the story yet, and Peter Jennings worried about "piling on" and "manipulating the process." Friedman and Jennings thought the letter was simply too complicated for the nightly news."

[Emphasis added.] For Clinton, the response was disinterest and attempts to help the Democratic candidate. With Cain, Stephanopoulos repeatedly pressed Ginger White to call on the Republican to step down: "Finally, do you believe Mr. Cain is fit to be president? Or should he end his campaign?...So, should he end his campaign?"

A transcript of the November 30 interview, which aired at 7:04, follows:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

7am tease

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Cain's final turn. She claims to be Herman Cain's 13-year-mistress. Now, Ginger White is speaking out live, here, exclusively, on GMA as his campaign reels from her allegations. Will our interview spell the end of the one-time front-runner's presidential bid?

7:04

STEPHANOPOULOS: Let's get right to the woman at the middle of the firestorm right now. Ginger White joins us this morning. Thank you so much, Ms. White. And I want to begin with the fund-raising letter Mr. Cain sent out last night. In it, he calls you a troubled Atlanta businesswoman and says your story is completely false. Your response?

GINGER WHITE: Um, it's very disappointing that he would- that he would call me troubled. And, you know, it's unfortunate. I'm not here to say anything negative about Mr. Cain. I'm only here to state the truth and what's happened in the past.

STEPHANOPOULOS: And what is the truth?

WHITE: Well, to begin, our relationship was on and off for the last 13, 14 years. This was not a consistent love affair that went on every day for the last 14 years. So, he is correct when he made that statement. And as far as I can tell, or what I'm hearing, that is the only thing he has been correct in saying.

STEPHANOPOULOS:  He also says he has helped you- Excuse me. He also said he has helped you financially over the past few years. Has he given you money?

WHITE: Yes, he has.

STEPHANOPOULOS: On what occasions?

WHITE: I've received gifts and money for the last two and a half years consistently.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Did he ask for anything in return for that money?

WHITE: No. This was nothing- this was not sex for cash.

STEPHANOPOULOS: One thing I'm struck by is that you've also shown phone records showing at least 61 phone calls over the last several months. Even after the physical relationship ended. And, and, and most strikingly, you just gave us earlier this morning, phone records from October and November, showing multiple texts, back and forth, between cain, just as these other stories about sexual harassment allegations are breaking in the press. He seems to be calling you in late October, on November 2nd. November 3rd. November 4th. November 5th, November 7th. November 8th, 13th, 14th and 18th. He's texting you all month long, all this month!

WHITE: That's correct. Our communication has, you know, just up until last week, when, you know, the leak- several leaks and media- the media was- they were calling my cell phone. They were calling family members. And just up until last week, that was my last contact with Mr. Cain. And you know, the thing is, I can't imagine waking up one morning and deciding to come out with this, if this was not true. This has been a very difficult situation for myself, for my family. And it's nothing that I am proud of. The truth of the matter is-

STEPHANOPOULOS: Go ahead.

WHITE: The truth of the matter is, when I entered into this inappropriate relationship with Mr. Cain, I was single. I was not married. Mr. Cain has been married throughout the entire relationship. And, you know, it's unfortunate. As far as any proof, which has- you know, I was watching several media shows just last night. When you enter into a private relationship that you really do not care to share with the public, you really don't enter into something like that holding on to receipts. Holding on to gifts or if there were any notes or anything like that, to come out eventually and say, "Yeah, this is what happened and here is my proof." That's absolutely something that --

STEPHANOPOULOS: What was the relationship, exactly? Was it an affair? Was it fun? Was it just sex? Tell us about it.

WHITE: It was a very casual affair. Am I proud to admit to that? No, I'm not. It was a very casual affair that Herman flew me to- on several trips. I went on several trips with Herman. We- one particular trip was the Mike Tyson/Holyfield fight in Las Vegas. You know. I can't make this stuff up. And frankly speaking, I wouldn't want to make this up.

STEPHANOPOULOS: In these texts the last couple of weeks, was he texting you to try to get you to not tell your story?

WHITE: Absolutely not. The funny thing about Herman Cain is, never in a million years did he probably think I would speak out on this. And honestly speaking, I never wanted to.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So, why did you?

WHITE: I wanted to come out with this to tell- to tell my side of the story. I came out being very honest. And, so far, I have been absolutely humiliated, embarrassed, and I look at the women who came out with, you know, the sexual harassment allegations. And, you know, we're really comparing apple to oranges. But, it's been very, very hurtful. I feel their pain. This is a completely different scenario. But I'll be honest with you, it's not been fun. And, you know, have I had financial problems? Absolutely. Have I ever been evicted? Never.

STEPHANOPOULOS: You have-

WHITE: Where I reside now-

STEPHANOPOULOS: You have been sued for libel by a former business partner.

WHITE: Yes, I have.

STEPHANOPOULOS: And how do you say to those who say it calls your credibility into question?

WHITE: Sure. I mean, I don't think my dealings with my business partner is any other business that may have had a partner and they had disputes or disagreements. Did I handle it? You know, at the time, it was very emotional and it was upsetting. It was disappointing. And you know, I am- I'm human. And it was a mistake. I apologize. I actually sent an E-mail stating, you know, my apology and my sincere regrets. She continues to want to move forward with this when I thought this was put to bed and sue me for money.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Finally, do you believe Mr. Cain is fit to be president? Or should he end his campaign?

WHITE: In my opinion, no, I do not. I honestly do not think that he is, in my opinion, would make a good president, as far as I'm concerned. Our- my views are different than his views. But at the end of the day, this is not political. This is absolutely not political.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So, should he end his campaign?

WHITE: And I never tried to make it out to be that. I'm sorry?

STEPHANOPOULOS: Should he end his campaign?

WHITE: That's something that he has to look himself in the mirror and ask himself. You know, last night, I slept very well, telling the truth. I'm not sure what's going on in his head right now. But it's unfortunate that any of this is going on.

Submitted by kinijane on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 2:22pm.

I don't know if hes guilty or not, that being said you can find anyone to say or do
anything for a dollar. I don't think Cain had a prayer from the beginning but the
media mouths have made darn sure of that.

you hypocrit! you worked your a$$ off trying to cover up for your boss and all his sexual antics by blaming the women involved. Now you sit and try to bash Cain when there is still questions as to his behavior. So it is okay for a white guy but, a black guy continues to have to be held responsible. Sounds racist to me.

Me thinks...

Submitted by freedomguardian on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 2:25pm.

...she is lying.

I'm happily married with two wonderful children.

Now for my confession:

I have women text me on my cell phone and even call my cell phone. I even call or text them back. I sometimes pay for women co-worker's lunch on their Birthday's. I've traveled on the same plane with women co-workers. We even checked into the same hotel.

Oh the scandal of it all... no, these are business trips that men and women do every day and the same goes for my male co-workers.

Big deal!!!

The media will obviously stoop to any level to bring Herman Cain down. He is the most feared candidate of the left because he can beat Obama.

I'm sticking with Herman Cain for President 2012 ----- 9-9-9

Go Herman!!!

You're probably a white guy,

Submitted by killa37 on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 2:50pm.

You're probably a white guy, and you're NOT running for President on the Republican/Conservative side..............because if you were (white or black), those texts, phone calls, lunches, dinners, plane trips, and hotel reservations would be headline news, and you'd be spending all your time and energy dealing with them instead of trying to put together a coherent and workable plan to win the election. Distraction, deflection, disinformation, deceit, disingenuousness, disdain, disrespect, dis'n'dat.......................
whatever it takes to bring somebody down.

when the going gets tough

Submitted by MidAmerica on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 2:53pm.

I hope Mr. Cain stays in.  We have to try and stop the assassination squads of the media.

If Bill Clinton can be accused of sexual harassment and rape and still be the greatest modern President to the dems then Herman should just hang tough.  if they continue to harass him he should bring up the multitudes of democrats who have done far worse.

If he really wants to make Liberal heads explode he can joke that he was planning on being the next JFK.

Ginger White is lying

Submitted by Monica2 on Thu, 12/01/2011 - 12:02am.

I agree, this person is such a pathetic liar it amazes me how they dared to put her in front of a camera where everyone could see it. Herman Cain is a well known personality in Atlanta, and he could not have gone anywhere with a woman who was not his wife without being recognized and it becoming a topic for gossip in the Atlanta media.

Has anyone in the media

Submitted by ckc1227 on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 3:31pm.

Has anyone in the media revealed what any of these texts say? I assume not, which doesn't make a lot of sense. With all these texts going back and forth, there should be at least one implicating Cain in this.

Meanwhile, got a chuckle out of this comment at Politic:

"Herman Cain is beginning to understand why Obama had all his old bath house boys killed off."

Still curious

Submitted by Model850 on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 3:54pm.

Although it was not of nationwide importance Herman Cain did run for the Senate in 2004 in Georgia. Yet none of these allegations of sexual harassment or an extra-marital affair surfaced then.

Why not? I don't know if he's guilty or not but I am curious why all of this has come up now rather than seven years ago.

I dunno...

Submitted by mawendt on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 4:46pm.

I think I can claim to be a bit of a subject matter expert on this.... being a guy, and having seen a bit of cheating going on while working as a private detective formany years...

I don't want to be sexist with this, so understand me when I say this first: the accuser is just not attractive enough to have had a 13 yr affair with Cain. Even if it was 'on-and-off' as she claimed.

That being said, its not to say that there is a possibility of a one or two time tryst many years ago, but successful guys like Cain don't go picking that kind of woman for long time affair. One night stand, when you are having severe marital problems, when you're so drunk that your math makes a 4 a 10.... but not something for that long with that kind of woman's appearance and carriage.

And don't even start by saying that she may have a great personality.

Having that kind of contact, by cell phone, doesn't cover it. There should be emails, gifts, tryst locations, receipts for dinners and hotel rooms for collaboration. Witnesses, disinterested third parties, bellhops and maids who were tipped. No one is so good they can hide everything but the cell history. Heck, if Herman was that good, he'd had a throwaway phone just for sex buddies, which wouldn't be traced to him.

Still, what was Cain's response?

"I do know Ms. White. I have helped her financially at times over the past few years, just as I have helped many friends and acquaintances throughout the years. I thought Ms. White was a friend in need of a supportive hand to better her life. Ms. White has made it apparent that she was abusing the friendship."

I don't like the response, or the fact that Cain's wife didn't jump into the national spotlight stating she was aware of this casual relationship that involved help and money, throughout the years, and how insane she believed the accuser was. There is a stand by your man, particularly if you believe people are lying about your husband. I'm hearing crickets from the wife.

Finally, it's Cui Bono - who benefits? Not just who benefitted from the allegations, but who benefitted from the alleged relationship? Political connections make these allegations more suspect. The last accuser that came out was such a liberal democrat, her word was not believeable. What if Cain's enemies trolled about looking for a RINO willing to take him down for money or a job? Is she being compensated for these 'interviews'? We'll see.

This woman keeps claiming how she wanted to come out, how difficult it was for her reputation, how its not for money, etc. What is White's political affiliation? History? Management of finances and relationships? She has yet to establish reasonable credibility, in my eyes. Further, by stating in public her opinion Cain wouldn't make a good president - well, she just moved herself from a moral and ethical position to a political commentator. (I see JFK and Clinton were judged to be lousy presidents based on all the women they slept with).

I don't buy it. Theres more to it here, maybe a true past indescretion by Cain many years ago, but not as it is potrayed. It may be a 'jump on the bandwagon' thing against him, as some people saw how effective the other believable but unfounded and unproven allegations were.

In any case, as much as I believe Cain to be what the nation needs, I'm thinking this drip-drip-drip of innuendo is taking its toll, just as an opponent would want it to. Just my thoughts.

I sure as hell won't be voting for that liberal, Romney, no matter what. The party - the Republican Party - is over.

This Is The End of ABC

Submitted by Avitar on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 7:54pm.

The Klan Party representative Stephanopoulos has to realize that the political dirty tricks don't go away at the end of the election. For a hundred years his people could make the election questions go away. That ended in 1994. Newt Gingrich still has the jugement he got against the Democrats for phone hacking hanging over them. The world has shifted against Stephanopoulos and will shift further in the future.

Disinterest?

The Vietnam draft letter was leaked to ABC News a few days before the NH primary in Feb. '92. It was reported on ABC's World News Tonight and Koppel grilled Clinton about the letter on Nightline--prior to the primary vote. So much for "disinterest".

Stephanopolous interviews Ginger White

Submitted by Monica2 on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 11:40pm.

I am soooo sorry to burst your bubble, George, but no, your interview with this loser will not end Cain's campaign. On the contrary, your gloating is so repulsive that I tripled my donation to his campaign for this month. I stopped watching your program a long time ago, due to the absurd angles used to cover most stories; however, this one is so beyond absurd that it must be addressed. Keep this up, and it will be the end of your career, because too many of us are getting fed up with biased programs like yours, and your audience is ever shrinking.
