Networks Predict 'Death Blow' and 'Doom' for Cain, CBS Skips Accuser's Legal Problems

By Scott Whitlock | November 29, 2011 | 12:14

All three morning shows on Tuesday trumpeted the latest woman to make accusations against Herman Cain, hyping this as a possible "death blow" and sign of coming "doom" for the "Sixth Sense" campaign. [See video below. MP3 audio here.] Ginger White insisted that she and Cain had engaged in a 13-year affair.  CBS, unlike NBC and ABC, made no mention of the woman's past legal problems, which include claims of stalking.

On Tuesday's "Good Morning America," co-host Robin Roberts pounced, "Campaign bombshell...Do [White's] shocking revelations spell doom for his troubled campaign?" On CBS's "Early Show," correspondent John Dickerson proclaimed, "At the worst, it's a death blow to the campaign."

Over on NBC's "Today," Chuck Todd preemptively declared the campaign over, announcing, "Now we're in sort of the 'Sixth Sense' mode. Everybody knows this candidacy is basically dead except the campaign."

(In the 1999 film "The Sixth Sense," one of the characters is dead, but doesn't know it.)

Guest David Gregory agreed, decrying, "Now he's had gaffe after gaffe when it comes to foreign policy. I think he's being taken less seriously, and so there's less conversation about these kinds of personal allegations, though I think their impact will be felt."

While "Early Show" reporters eagerly covered the new accusations in three separate segments, they made no mention of White's questionable past. The New York Daily News on Tuesday explained:

[White] is middle-aged, has two children and was evicted from her Atlanta home earlier this month, according to a background check done by the TV station.

WAGA reporters also found records showing she has been hit with several eviction notices in DeKalb County, Ga., over the past six years.

She filed for bankruptcy 23 years ago, the station reported. In 2001, she also filed a sexual harassment suit, which was later settled, according to the station.

Her former business partner, Kimberly Vay, once sued her and accused her of stalking, the station reported.

Vay, who did not respond to calls for comment Monday, also sought an order of protection against White, charging that she was bombarded with emails and texts “threatening [a] lawsuit” and defaming her character.

Reporter Nancy Cordes simply told viewers: "She says she's coming forward to tell her story, in part, because she feels bad for the women who accused him of sexual harassment."

"Good Morning America's" Brian Ross mentioned legal problems twice, noting, "Court documents obtained by ABC News shows that Cain's accuser, White, a single mother, has a long history of legal and financial problems, including an eviction notice earlier this month."

Lisa Myers on "Today" also observed that White "has had financial problems, including a bankruptcy filing and eviction notices."

All three evening newscasts on Monday covered the accusations with full reports. However, at that point, details of White's legal problems hadn't yet surfaced.

A transcript of the November 29 Today segment, which aired at 7:06 am EST, follows:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

MATT LAUER: David, let me start with you. The first reaction is this is almost anti-climactic after the first drip drip drip over the last month or so. I think people are almost numb. What impact do you think this story has on this race?

[ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Cain Under Fire; How Will New Claims Impact The GOP Race?]

DAVID GREGORY: I think some of the impact from the allegations has already started to materialize in Cain's poll numbers. He's fallen some, particularly in early states and in the national rankings. Whether it's among women or social conservatives in an early state like Iowa, and they are really important in the Iowa caucuses. Some of that support has started to fall away.

But remember, it's not just this, Herman Cain got on the political map because he was talking about tax reform, 9-9-9. He was performing well in the debates. Now he's had gaffe after gaffe when it comes to foreign policy. I think he's being taken less seriously, and so there's less conversation about these kinds of personal allegations, though I think their impact will be felt.

LAUER: And before I turn it over to Chuck here for a second, this statement from Lin Wood, the attorney for Herman Cain, saying basically this is none of our business and that a consensual sexual – or an alleged consensual sexual relationship between adults falls outside the media's right to know, does that statement do more harm than good?

GREGORY: It certainly raises some questions. That is to say, "Look, those other allegations, those were legitimate questions, we can deal with that, and this is a private affair." I don't think that's going to work in this case. It suggests that, you know, maybe he doesn't want to get into this. Maybe something may have really happened, though Cain denies it. I also think it's a way to target the media here yet again and say, "Here's another example of the media coming after Herman Cain."

LAUER: Yeah, exactly, this is not, Chuck, this is not about that lawyer telling the media to back off, this is for the people out there who don't trust the media in the first place, especially what they consider to be the mainstream liberal media. They're firing up the base with that statement.

TODD: They are, and the first time that did seem to work when the first round of allegations, the sexual harassment stuff, because they were anonymous accusers and so you could rally the base there, the Tea Party conservatives that are really –  that were really behind Herman Cain. They got into that and they loved attacking the media.

This, though, the accusation is not really coming from the media, it's coming from this woman. And I've already noticed you're not seeing the same rallying around Cain that you saw the first time. But just to go to the point that you started with earlier, Matt, this was a campaign that was withering on the vine. Now we're in sort of the "Sixth Sense" mode. Everybody knows this candidacy is basically dead except the campaign.

LAUER: So 36 days to go until the Iowa caucuses. Is Herman Cain at this point doing damage? I mean, he's talking about everything but policy right now. Is he doing damage to the rest of the GOP field or in some odd way, guys, and David, you could tackle this, is he helping some of the other candidates?

GREGORY: Well, I think to the extent that somebody like Newt Gingrich, who has told people, "Look, I'm not going to attack Herman Cain for any of his problems, but I'm going to wait patiently for his supporters to reluctantly come to the point of view that he can't win, as Chuck says, and get some of that support and look where Newt Gingrich is in the polls right now. He's on top. I think that power begins to consolidate against the one anti-Romney candidate. For the moment it's Newt Gingrich, some of the others have had their time, it gets difficult then to come back a second time.

LAUER: And Chuck, your take on that?

TODD: Well, yeah, I think that Cain is not necessarily hurting the field anymore. He's become a sideshow. It's almost a shiny metal object at this point. And the campaigns themselves, the other ones, Newt Gingrich was asked about this yesterday and said, "No, no, no, I'm not talking about it." It really is, yeah, a distraction, but I don't think it's hurting the field, say almost the way I think it actually was hurting the entire field during that week of focus on sexual harassment.

This is getting tiresome.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 12:28pm.

It would be much better if Herman Cain had run as a Democrat, where all this crap they keep throwing at him is considered a resume enhancer.

I think that the objective of the MSM and the DNC is more sinister than just trying to slime one candidate. I believe that they are attempting to scare the hell out of ANYONE who would consider running now or in the future for public office as a conservative.

If you ever played "Catch'em and Kiss'em" in elementary school, that could be spun as "sexual assault" by today's media standards.

I’m sticking with Cain (although Newt is looking better and better). Nonetheless, I want to see Cain somewhere on the ticket.

Tiresome is too mild

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 12:53pm.

But I think this is going to be the fatal stab for Cain. I hope he remains in the race until at least after Florida (since we are in the clean-up batter position).

I see this shaping up thusly: After Florida, it becomes Romney vs. Newt. Perry will stick around, as will Ron Paul. I think Cain, Santorum, and Bachmann all drop out, and endorse Newt.

Palin will endorse Newt. That will be the thing that puts him over the top. Palin trumps Coulter.

Because of the same state thing, Cain won't be on the bottom of the ticket (I'm dreaming Rubio, but I doubt it). Not sure who Newt would pick as his VP, that, as we say, would be interesting.

I would love to see Herman Cain kick little Turbo Tax Timmy to the curb. Remember, Herman Cain has the experience of running the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank....it would be hard for the democrats to fault that qualification.

Seriously, I am ABO all the way. I would actually vote for Ron Paul in the general if that were to become the choice. I wouldn't like it, but I'd do it.

This proves that Herman Cain is still the Lefts #1 Target

Submitted by gopcongress on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 12:31pm.

I have always maintained that Iowa and New Hampshire may set the initial direction of the primary season, but it is South Carolina and Florida that will give the biggest impetus into the actual race. And so far, Herman Cain has led in both those states' polls. So THIS is the candidate the left fears the MOST. We ALL know that the left wants Romney to be the GOP candidate DESPERATELY, because A) It depresses the conservative vote, B) It provides the impetus for a potential "Reform Party"-like candidate to go third party from the right of Romney, or, at worst, C) If Romney beats Obama, then he will at least not reverse Obama's destructive policies.

This whole sequence is key as to why the new allegations on Herman Cain have been trumpeted by the left. Pure and simple.

Either Herman Cain is the

Submitted by Gat New York on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 12:50pm.

Either Herman Cain is the most clever womanizer in history or this is the worst character assasination I have ever seen. Based on the evidence (or lack there of) I believe in the latter.

Woman number one who happens to work for Obama came out but never said what the actual allegation was. However based on her next sex harassment allegation in her very next job, it could be a matter of someone sending dirty jokes via email.

Women number 2 and 3 never came out.

Woman number 4 was that blonde gold-digger who just happens to live in David Axelrod's apartment building in Chicago. Not only could she not produce a shred of evidence, she felt so angry and violated by that incident she claimed to have happened, that she pushed her way into a Tea Party event in Chicago to meet Cain and take a photo.

And now woman number 5 cannot produce anything more than phone records and two signed books. A 13 year affair would have produced at least some photos, love notes, romantic gifts. This woman could not produce anything so far.

In the end what you have is a string of unkown allegations, insinuations, and flimsy circumstantial evidence.

Not to worry Gat, If this

Submitted by dscott on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 3:41am.

Not to worry Gat, If this attempt fails against Cain, they will then try again with another woman, with a naked or compromising photo shopped onto a picture with Cain. Sooner or later something has to stick... The point is guilt by accusation works because the accused can never prove a negative, i.e. he didn't do it.

Cain is guilty of the liberal's stereotype of black males because it's the liberals doing the accusing. If blacks as a group were really paying attention they would be greatly offended at the racist behavior of their plantation masters, the liberals. The smear campaign by liberals against Cain proves beyond doubt that they believe no black male can be faithful to their wife, that no black male can be financially successful on their own without the support of the liberatcy or their race based policies. By engaging in plantation politics, the liberals prove their own racist belief that blacks are inferior to all other races. It's disgusting to me, but apparently to blacks as a group, they accept the liberal belief that they are inferior and thus must have preferences. Herman Cain by his personal success puts all that in doubt and removes the excuse that White Society is keeping them down. A black person like Cain, Watts or Rev. Peterson is the exception to the rule. The fact that liberals believe the rule and seek to enforce it by smearing Cain proves their own disgusting racism. Or did we imagine an Uncle Tom of the liberal plantation calling Cain a minstrel?

Predictable as the clock striking midnight...

Submitted by Spoker on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 1:33pm.

This was as predictable as the clock striking midnight. The WH re-election goon squad and their willing LSM toadies will now move on to their next target.

It is so sad that so many Americans have encouraged this to happen by buying into it. What is worse is that so many voters are willing to allow these prepaid slime attacks to determine who will run against our OJT leader-from-behind and chief.

There should be no doubt, we are certainly going to get what we deserve in 2012. It will be what we choose through either our actions or inaction. And of the result of our choice we should have no doubt either, Obamas re-election will make the last 4 years look like a Sunday School picnic. We have no one to blame but ourselves, we are going to allow it to happen.

Submitted by Dave. on Tue, 11/29/2011 - 11:32pm.

I don't believe he had an affair, or that he ever sexually harassed anyone, but I just do not see him rebounding from this.

Whoever orchestrated this political assassination (and I believe that is exactly what this was) of Herman Cain obviously has some clout - and probably a pile of cash.

Since most all of his accusers were and are having financial issues, I say down the road we should look to see how many suddenly have paid-off mortgages and other loans, as well as have made big purchases, too.

If it is proven these women are lying, every last one of them should be sent to prison for a very long time.

I see this as nothing less than election tampering, which could result in Obama being reelected.
