Networks Spin Violent 'Occupy' Protesters as 'Pushing Back,' Minimize Rock Throwing
According to the network morning shows, violent Occupy Wall Street protesters are fighting back against government officials who are trying to rein them in. Early Show's Erica Hill highlighted "this growing crackdown on the anti-Wall Street protests around the country." She added, "In Oakland, California, the protesters are pushing back."
The "pushing back" came in the form of throwing rocks and bottles at police officers who attempted to remove them from a public encampment.
Co-host Matt Lauer teased the segment by wondering, "Crackdown...What's driving the rising tension?"
Today offered one sentence references to the rock and bottle throwing. The show also gave the least amount of coverage, despite being the longest program. Just 49 seconds were allowed over four hours.
On Good Morning America, news reader Josh Elliott buried the lede. He narrated, "On the street, it had the look and feel of a war zone. Police firing stun grenades, bean bag projectiles and rubber bullets."
The news anchor treated as fact the claim that rubber bullets were used. However, the L.A Times reports:
Protesters had also thrown paint "and other agents" at officers, he said. The crowd reached about 1,000 at its peak, [Oakland Interim Police Chief Howard] Jordan said, noting that police used bean bag rounds to disperse demonstrators. He said no rubber bullets were used -- a claim disputed by protesters.
Yet, he waited until the very end to explain what prompted the violence near a government building: "Police said they had no choice but to use tear gas after protesters began throwing rocks and bottles at them."
Elliott even tied a new Congressional Budget Office study, into the protests. He linked, "Of course, much of what's fueling these protests, the sense that only the rich are getting richer. And this morning, a new report supports that belief." The CBO study claims the wealthiest one percent saw their income grow by 275 percent over the last decade.
The ABC journalist appeared to be trying to distance the Occupy Wall Street brand from the violence in Oakland. (100 people were arrested.) In the first segment, he mentioned, by name, the group once. In a follow-up piece, Elliott didn't even use the words Occupy Wall Street at all.
On CBS's Early Show, reporter John Blackstone insisted, "Yet, a new CBS News/New York Times poll shows that 43% of Americans agree with the Occupy Wall Street movements, while 27% disagree."
But, he left out a key point from CBS's own poll. According to the survey:
Opinions on Occupy Wall Street Movement
Favorable 25%
Unfavorable 20
Undecided/Haven’t heard enough 53
Isn't the fact that 53 percent of American's are undecided or haven't heard enough important enough to mention?

JOSH ELLIOTT: But, we're going to begin in Oakland, California, where one man said, and I do quote, "It sounded like bombs going off." [Video of the protest.] Police clashing with anti-Wall Street protesters, cracking down on hundreds of demonstrators, who refused to give up their ground. On the street, it had the look and feel of a war zone. Police firing stun grenades, bean bag projectiles and rubber bullets. Tear gas flying. From the air, panic. The crowd, seen here dispersing in seconds, running for cover. All the result of a day-long encroachment by police, who moved in the early morning, dismantling the protesters' tent city.
DEANNA SANTANA (City administrator): I made the decision with the team that was in place to put an end as to what I see is a very, a very critical situation, that posed significant risk.
ELLIOTT: But the protesters returned. Trying to take back the plaza that had been theirs for more than two weeks.
BRADLEY JUDD (Protester): Taking away people's right to peacefully assemble in this country. You know, this is really outrageous.
ELLIOTT: Also overnight, arrests in Atlanta, with protesters defying orders to vacate a city park. This scene ended peacefully. But in Oakland, a far different result. More than 100 people arrested, two police officers injured. And other people, like this woman in her car, left in disbelief at the violence and chaos, unspooling in her streets. Police said they had no choice but to use tear gas after protesters began throwing rocks and bottles at them. Of course, much of what's fueling these protests, the sense that only the rich are getting richer. And this morning, a new report supports that belief. It found, over the past three decades, the wealthiest one percent of Americans saw their wealth grow some 275 percent. But, people in the middle three fifths of the population saw their income rise only 40 percent.

I'm sure the OWS protesters threw the rocks and bottles "peacefully". Everyone knows, only the teaparty is violent.
Tea Party Comparison

How many times were there "push back" incidents at ANY Tea Party rally? At how many Tea Party rallys were "crackdowns" needed? How many bottles and rocks were thrown? How many cops had to be diverted from their regular duties, how many sanitation workers had to clean up after, how much verbal abuse (for anyone other than politicians) or racial slurs were uttered? And finally, how many Tea Party rallys had media top-cover?

65% of the people surveyed had either heard only a little, or nothing about OWS (34% had heard "a lot") yet 43% agree with it? Maybe I need another cup of coffee to understand this.

I would have had a follow-up open-ended (or at least a multiple choice) question to only the people who'd actually heard about it - asking what their interpretation of the movement was. And then I would have only polled those people on their opinion to see if they agree.
It's pointless to ask people if they agree with something if you have no idea what the bleep they are agreeing on.
I agree.

Polls seem to be irrelevant since they are skewed by how the quesion is phrased or what options are available to choose from. It seems applying logic to polls takes a back seat to "making news".
Push back?

Let's see now: Knowingly and willfully breaking a clearly-written law, followed by physical assault and battery against uniformed police who then legally seek to stop the overt, unlawful behavior, is now quaintly defined as "push back."
Sort of like when Bonnie and Clyde "pushed back" against police who dared to interfere with their free-spirited string of undocumented/unauthorized cash withdrawals as they sought to "punish" greedy, evil, capitalistic banks.
Seems perfectly peaceful and justifiable to me, how about you?
And some flying pigs are more equal than others.....indeed....

Local Oakland TV was funny
Submitted by Fredy on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 2:27pm.
Last night the local tv tried to push the same idea that the cops were at fault and simply randomly attacking protesters.
Then they swung to a reporter that was asking a cop why they were using tear gas in such an obviously provacative manner.
The problem was, the cop they were asking was covered in paint and other 'stuff'. (I guess he must have come to work like that.) He explained how he had grabbed a 'protester' that he saw throwing a rock and was putting plastic handcuffs on as part of the arrest. He then said that ~200 other 'protesters' then pushed in close and started hitting him and throwing more stuff, eggs and such. He then stated that was the point at which they used tear gas.
They immediatly went back to 'earlier footage' and claims that it was all the fault of the police.

Wow, 43% agree that we should wipe out capitalism and throw all the "Jew bankers" out of the country? That's troubling.
Or could CBS have cherry picked a more benign, sanitized aspect of the protesters' beliefs for their poll?

It's amazing that 43% of the country agrees with a movement that, to this point, has no real focus and seems to be all over the board in terms of what they want. I guess the unifying factor is that most of them want their bills paid by someone else. How can 43% of the country agree with this? I bet many of these OWS protestors don't even know why they're there and probably don't even agree with many of their cohorts.

Watched it on the local news. I though that overall OPD was very restrained.
Until the rocks and bottles flew at the cops there was no trouble. The Occupy folks
had been given an eviction notice to clear Ogawa plaza last week. The mayor a Democrat
didn't take any action on that notice. It was only after the Democrat mayor was
out of town on business that the folks were bounced out of the plaza...by an underling of the mayor.
When the criticisms start getting hurled over police brutality Mayor Quan can truthfully say
it wasn't her because she was out of town during the police action.
Very important since the mayor is facing a recall for being soft on public safety.
