ABC Hits 'Billionaire Boosters' of Tea Party, Uses Liberal Film to Slam Conservatives

By Scott Whitlock | October 07, 2011 | 11:46

ABC's Brian Ross on Friday investigated the alleged misdeeds of "billionaire boosters" to the Tea Party and even used a liberal documentary to attack the conservative group. Appearing on "Good Morning America," Ross touted a Bloomberg report hitting the "secret sins" of Koch Industries and whether the corporation traded with Iran.

An ABC graphic linked, "Billionaire Boosters of the Tea Party: Donors' Company Under Fire." Ross used a clip of businessman David Koch and simply added, "...A documentary filmmaker was rolling [sic], as David Koch appeared before Tea Party leaders and spoke of American values." There was no information that "(Astro)Turf Wars" is a liberal documentary trashing the Tea Party, in addition to David and Charles Koch. See video below. MP3 audio here.

The film's trailer offers an attack very similar to the ABC correspondent's take. The documentary was screened at the progressive Center for American Progress.

The CAP site touted:

But are these grassroots actions in fact examples of 'astroturfing'?—The practice of manufacturing citizens groups for the purpose of delivering corporate messages. Curious to find out, Australian filmmaker Taki Oldham went undercover to investigate. What he found was astroturfing on a scale greater than he could have imagined, threatening not only the heath of American democracy, but that of its citizens and the planet as a whole.

ABC only offered a text graphic with the film's title, but nothing about its left-wing ideology.

Ross described a new report by Bloomberg Markets claiming that a Koch subsidiary allegedly traded with Iran and that another one in France paid bribes.

But, it wasn't until the very end of the segment that Ross allowed, "But the fact...[that these events] took place with this company is not likely to sit that well with Koch's conservative friends in Congress and in the Tea Party."

Other international companies, such as General Electric (which owns NBC), have faced similar allegations. As the Washington Post explained in 2008:

GE has long had a corporate presence in Iran, which U.S. officials say is providing weapons and training for Shiite militias in the Iraq conflict. Under growing criticism from the public and its own shareholders, GE announced in 2005 that it would accept no new business in Iran and would wind down existing contracts, which mostly involved sales of oil, gas and energy and health-care equipment.

However, ABC hasn't seen fit to offer an ABC investigation into that company.

Finally, ABC didn't make much of an effort to get the Koch side of the story. (The network did hide outside David Koch's apartment for an ambush.)

In the Washington Post, Koch lawyer Mark Holden responded to the charges.

A transcript of the October 7 segment, which aired at 7:13am EDT, follows:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

ABC GRAPHIC: Billionaire Boosters of the Tea Party: Donors' Company Under Fire

ROBIN ROBERTS: We're going to turn now to an investigation of the secretive billionaire brothers who are a huge financial force in the conservative movement here in the U.S. Contributing over $100 million by some estimates. Now, their company attracting some unwanted attention for questionable activity. ABC's Brian Ross has definitely been looking into this. Good morning, Brian.

BRIAN ROSS: Well, good morning, Robin. The billionaire Koch brothers, David and Charles, the men said to be behind the scenes at the Tea Party, are masters at trying to keep secrets both their political and business dealings. But, now the covers have at least been partially pulled back on their privately held oil company, Koch Industries, what reporters for Bloomberg Markets call its secret sins. Other than a night out on New York's cultural scene, the Kochs rarely appear or speak in public. But on this occasion [Graphic: Courtesy: (Astro)Turf Wars], a documentary filmmaker was rolling, as David Koch appeared before Tea Party leaders and spoke of American values.

DAVID KOCH: The American dream of free enterprise, capitalism, is alive and well.

ROSS: But, now questions are being raised about the American values of the source of the Koch's wealth, Koch industries, a $100 billion a year oil and energy company, based in Wichita, Kansas. This week's edition of Bloomberg Markets reveals one Koch Industry subsidiary was trading with Iran and that another in France was paying bribes to get business in six different countries. In a previously undisclosed document, Koch industries even admits the payment are "violations of criminal law."

DAVID EVANS (Bloomberg Markets Reporter): It's a document right there in the court record, out of the lips of Koch industries.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: Mr. Koch, ABC News. How do you respond to the allegations?

ROSS: David Koch declined to speak with ABC News when we caught up with him outside his Park Avenue apartment in New York City. The company says it fired those responsible for the bribes when it learned of them in 2008. But as a private company, it was able to keep all of that secret until this week's article.

PROF. JOHN COFFEE (Columbia Law School): There were enough of these payments that I think any prosecutor would want to look further.

ROSS: As for the trading with Iran, it involved key components for a huge state-owned petrol chemical plant from Koch subsidiaries in Germany and Italy, despite a U.S. ban on trade with Iran since 1995. One order was placed the day after President Bush told Congress Iran continued to be a threat to the U.S.

GEORGE W. BUSH: Pursues weapons of mass destruction and supports terror.

ROSS: Koch industries says the trade with Iran was legal because it was done through a foreign subsidiary and that no Americans were involved.

UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: You're still dealing with a state that is considered by the State Department to be a sponsor of terrorism.

ROSS: Koch industries says it voluntarily stopped trading with Iran in 2006. But the new revelations that it went on, even through a subsidiary and that other modern international companies also traded with Iran- But the fact is that it took place with this company is not likely to sit that well with Koch's conservative friends in Congress and in the Tea Party, Robin.

ROBERTS: Thank you for your investigation there, Brian. Thank you. Have a good weekend.

Every time I watch PBS I see that they're funded by grants (also know as "donations") from David Koch. So, where's the protest over his "influence" with PBS?

following is accurate:

For many years, they have been involved in politics but not terribly open or transparent about it. It is true that David Koch ran as vice president on the 1980 Libertarian ticket, to the right of Ronald Reagan. According to New York Times columnist Frank Rich, “his campaign called for the abolition not just of Social Security, federal regulatory agencies and welfare but also of the FBI, the CIA, and public schools.” Since the Libertarian party’s 1 percent showing in 1980, David Koch has very much been behind the scenes, until now.

However, it appears Koch has been very supportive of the arts, so maybe that's the key.

And the lock that this key fits has "politics" written all over it.

If the same man who financially supports the "arts" and isn't being denigrated for that financial support or that financial support isn't even mentioned, is "discovered" to support something that liberals in general oppose, like the TEA Party, well, then that support is suddenly ominous and the thing that he supports is suddenly suspicious and worthy of "exposure." That's blatant hypocrisy on display.

Submitted by ThisnThat on Fri, 10/07/2011 - 12:59pm.

ABC needs to learn how to spell two things:

  1. George Soros
  2. Hypocrisy

They also need to learn how to pick up on real corruption, like paying Hispanics to march in the so-called march on wall street protests in Wash DC. Apparently, these people were holding signs written in English -- and they didn't even know what they said. Now that's what I would call news -- not some made-up thing about Conservatives.

Speaking of illegal Hispanics -- did anyone see today that o'bama is now going to sue Alabama on its immigration law, arguing it invites discrimination against foreign-born citizens? Hey, o'bama. If you have a particular instance of such discrimination, bring it to court. Otherwise -- enforce the damn law, you whiny bast@rd.

Most of the rich brats who are occupiers are just bored and trying to escape from college classes. Wonder what will happen to them when mom and dad cut off the cell phone service and the credit cards and they are left with the school automatically withdraw or expel them for not attending classes? Hope the brats can pay the student loan debt, because it starts to become payable once they are no longer attending an educational institution whether by their choice or the institution's.

The other occupiers seem to be a combination of the usual 60's has-beens and discards brought in as astroturf. The occupy movement to them is nothing more than a four to five decade anniversary to their original antisocial conduct now with 4G and iPads. The discards are hired occupiers receiving a paycheck from one of the many leftist conspiracy usual suspects (Soros, etc.) who are bussed in and given a script to follow.

So many of the occupiers don't even know why they are there. I still can't imagine the filth, smell and otherworldly environment in those occupied hellholes.

Submitted by CobraMan on Sat, 10/08/2011 - 1:34pm.

If you protesters are 99 percent of the "disenfranchised people," as you claim, then, as there are only a few hundred thousand of you, total, you must be a VERY small group. You don't have the numbers, the power, the influance, to actually change things in a country with a population of over 350 million. All you have the "power" to accomplish is to disrupt, which is really all you seek to do.

Conversely, the TEA Party, which you so easily dismiss, numbers in the millions. You group is nothing more than a rounding error in regards to membership numbers. So, good luck trying to negate the power of the TEA Party. For every one of you, there are 30 of us. Which group do you think will have the biggest impact at the voting booth?

So, Jer, just how much financial influence does the Koch Brothers actually have over the TEA Party in general? People keep claiming that the Koch Brothers are "heavily" funding the TEA Party, but they never actually tell us just how much finding the TEA party actually receives.

But it has now come out how involved they have been in funding Tea Party groups, Americans for Prosperity, FreedomWorks, and Citizens for a Sound Economy ($12 million).

That is it. That is the entire scope of the articles discussion of the tea party groups. The article was a history lesson, and what political style stuff the Koch brothers are up to nowadays kind of thing. The tea party line, and even the entire line was not devoted to the tea party was one out of twenty-five that were discussing notteaparty things.

When I got to "Oddly enough, the fiercely capitalist Koch family owes part of its fortune to Joseph Stalin." that's when I started to think possibly... maybe ... it was a bit biased.

The Koch brothers can pay lobbyists all they want.  A purely libertarian movement (as proven by Ron Paul) is not going to make it to the federal ballot box.  The Tea Party is just a name for a platform that politicians have tried to tie their name to.

Most people who are "tea party" (lower case letters) are merely "sympathizers" who have never taken a single dime of money .  They are people take their time to scour the political landscape for people who are for small government and fiscal responsibility.  They are not activists.  They have lives and a job and responsibilities.  They are active in their own communities and most people would never know they'd crossed paths with them.

You know matthewdean is gonna pop a rivet when he hears about this. You pointed, here on NewsBusters, a piece thorough debunked as bull, BY NEWSBUSTERS.

How high are you? Look, I am searching you room again. Sorry. I know it sucks but we don't want a repeat of the great naked squirrel hunt of 2007 incident. The neighbors still remind me of how the property values never did return since. They still have not replaced the potshot statue of Davy Crockett downtown. And i just finished paying off the replacement costs of Bob's Big Boy iconic Big Boy Icon out front.

Don't worry.  I'll take care of the anticipated matthewdean onslaught.

I recall the NB article. I believe--but not positive--I posted a comment on it although they have all been scrubbed. Mr. Gladnick did a good job demonstrating biases of Mayer and her sources and taking yet another opportunity to slam George Soros, but as far as completely debunking any and all claims of Koch association with predecessor Tea Party organizations and the brothers directly or indirectly providing generous seed money for same, the debunking was far less persuasive.

Speaking of biases, you may want to re-examine sentry's link. One of its most prominent advertisers was a big tipoff regarding possible slanted agendas--as well as was the ideological leaning of every opinion columnist on the staff. Bottom line: It is a well to the right, conservative/libertarian website.

In any event, I simply posted the link to the US News & World Report blogged article [with the embedded link to the New Yorker piece] without comment, to be taken fwiw.  I made no representations otherwise, nor did I attack sentry's source or any allegation of Soros involvement with OWS.

I'm appealing my grade.  I now think I deserved a B+.

Where is your proof the Koch brothers "heavily" fund the Tea Party?

You done shoulda commented, maybe the lost Cisco days would not so bad. You let the article speak for you. Always a bad idea.

For heaven's sake, Vet...

Submitted by Jer on Sun, 10/09/2011 - 8:49pm.

Radical said there wasn't any proof of funding by the Kochs and mentioned Soros and OWS. zimmer talked about heavy funding. sentry challenged zimmer for proof of heavy funding by the Kochs. I linked an article which mentioned Kochs relationship with the Tea Party and also contained a link to the Mayer piece. And the ONLY statement I made was "Here's an article about the Kochs and the Tea Party". [I had opened the embedded Mayer link and in hindsight I probably should have posted THAT link since it contained more detail.] He replied with the Soros link. As you can see, my post and sentry's were extraordinarily brief, and our exchange did not extend any further, and neither post was an undertaking to provide indisputable objective "proof" about either Koch or Soros.

RESTLESS...

Submitted by Jer on Sun, 10/09/2011 - 10:30pm.

Sorry to waste your time. It was not offered as "proof" and I didn't ask you to read it.  The article certainly can be considered as a source of evidence of Koch connections with the Tea Party.  However, people are clearly entitled to question Mayer's credibility and draw their own conclusions regarding the value of the evidence and the liklihood of authenticity.  That said, maybe you would prefer watching a brief video instead of laboring over the tedium of the printed word.

But proof?  There is probably no convincing evidence which would satisfy everyone or even a significant number of members here at NB.  I constantly read claims of Soros financial involvement in or support for or influence over practically every liberal cause, website, blog, movement, pundit, politician, broadcast network, periodical, left-leaning organization, etc. on the planet.  But in most cases the actual evidence is either non-existent or skimpy or speculative or inconclusive, and unassailable proof is just as elusive as is it is for establishing the myriad claims regarding the Kochs and their foundations.

I didn't intend to waste so much of my time with this either--only to provide a courtesy informational link to sentry indicating  the Tea Party funding claim wasn't something made up out of thin air.  It was never intended as absolute proof of the connection however.

The tedium of the written word

Submitted by RESTLESS 1 on Sun, 10/09/2011 - 10:57pm.

doesn't bother me. The tedium of that particular article did. If I wanted a dissertation of the history of the Koch brothers, I could have asked the five or six people who showed up to occupy San Antonio. As I think about it though, one of them was pretty hot, walking around with red, white, and blue hair, with her tits covered only with tats, (sorry, trying to keep with a theme here).

Then there was the one Mexican national, demanding that only tequila made from 100% agave, from well, Tequila, be called tequila. I actually got along with that guy. He spoke no English, and of course it didn't help that I don't speak Russian. Didn't matter though. After a few margaritas, neither one of were speaking coherent Mandarin.

Next thing I know, I'm waking up on the couch with the wife looking down at me menacingly, (usually a good thing, but not this time), wondering just where I found a habit at that time of night.

Come to think of it, protests are fun!!!!

From what I've seen so far regarding the physical appearance of the occupiers, they would be wise to keep all parts of their anatomy completely covered, assuming the objective is to attract crowds rather than repel them.
