Huh? Chris Matthews to Top McCain '08 Aide: 'We Were All Rooting for You'

Does Chris Matthews listen to himself talk? On Thursday's Hardball, the MSNBC anchor told top McCain '08 aide Steve Schmidt, "We were all rooting for you, by the way. And a lot of us in this business like John McCain a lot."

The cable anchor who famously informed America that Barack Obama gave him a "thrill" up his leg, added, "He didn't think we did and we were tough on him last time. I liked Obama. But I tell you, I've always liked McCain."

[See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Not pausing in this unprompted admission, Matthews added, "[McCain's] still mad at me. Fine. That's the way it is...He ought to be mad at me."

He ought to be mad at me?

Offering a compliment to McCain '08 campaign manager Steve Schmidt, Matthews asserted, "I think you did a good job last time. I mean it." Of course, John McCain did lose the 2008 election.

A transcript of the September 29 segment, which aired at 5:13pm EDT, follows:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Steve Schmidt, who ran the campaign for John McCain, I think you did a good job last time. I mean it. We were all rooting for you, by the way. And a lot of us in this business like John McCain a lot.

STEVE SCHMIDT: Of course. He's a great guy.

MATTHEWS: He didn't think we did and we were tough on him last time. I liked Obama. But I tell you, I've always liked McCain. He's still mad at me. Fine. That's the way it is. Thank you, Steve Schmidt. Thank you, John Heilemann. He ought to be mad at me.

He's just crazy!

I used to think that Matthews was a major hypocrite and liar. Now I just think he's mentally ill.

Unfortunately for the world, mentally-ill is a resume enhancement at MSNBC.

Chris Matthews Slams John McCain for ‘Contempt’ Towards Obama

By Scott Whitlock | September 27, 2008

  • Matthews revised the question, asking if this indicated some sort of “inferiority complex” on McCain’s part: “He never looked at his opponent. What is that about? Is that an inferiority complex? Is that embarrassment? Is that guilt? Or is it contempt? What is it? It’s something.” Robinson eagerly agreed, asserting that “this is part of John McCain’s style that he, he has to make an opponent into an enemy” and adding that the GOP candidate “almost has to demonize the enemy in order to get into that, that, that fighting stance.”

Chris Matthews: McCain Has 'Menacing Smile,' Obama's 'Debonair'

By Warner Todd Huston | October 08, 2008

. . . what Matthews said tonight:

  • Barack Obama is gifted in birth by a wonderful smile...
  • John McCain, when he smiles, has a somewhat menacing quality. It may not be purposeful, but when he smiles, you wonder what he's really thinking.
  • Barack Obama, for whatever reason, comes off as debonaire, even under attack.

That's some rooten tooten, isn't it?

Scott - dig man, dig.

Christophe Matthews?

I was reading a book on cooking where they mentioned some French gourmand from the 19th century who had all sorts of eccentric and silly things to say about cooking. The writer's opinion of this guy reminded me of Tingles the Clown. The writer said, "He is often quoted but never respected".

The fact that Matthews likes McCain, is very disturbing about McCain. Also who exactly are these people "We were all rooting for you" Matthews' is referring to? The Communist Aparat.

Submitted by almostacowboy on Fri, 09/30/2011 - 11:15am.

If he does that accounts for about 25-33% of his audience. I tried - I mean I really tried - listening to to his opening diatribe one afternoon this week and it was literally unlistenable - that nasal, gravelly, staccato delivery is just so grating - and the inane, vacuous, insipid, vapid and fallacious commentary.........
