Chris Matthews Trashes Perry, Says TX Governor Is Accusing Obama of Being 'Pro-Nazi'

By Scott Whitlock | September 21, 2011 | 17:56

On Wednesday's Hardball, MSNBC host Chris Matthews trashed Rick Perry, accusing him of calling Barack Obama "pro-Nazi." Matthews attacked the Republican presidential candidate for claiming that the President's policy towards Israel is "appeasement." The anchor shrieked that Perry had pulled "the rug out from under [Obama] and accuse[d] him of, basically, pro-Nazi behavior."

Matthews added, "We know what appeasement means. It means Neville Chamberlain." Liberal guest Joan Walsh piled on, theorizing, "He's pulling Hitler into this, which is a very horrible thing to do. It's ignorant, Chris."

[See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Walsh, who writes for Salon, insisted that Jews should be frightened of support from Perry and evangelical Christians. Matthews insisted, "Why is it scary to any thoughtful member who is a citizen of Israel? Because, what use do some of these-right-wing Christians have for Israel? The end of days, right?"

What Perry actually said during a speech in New York: "We are equally indignant of the Obama administration and their Middle East policy of appeasement."

Some more context to what the Texas Governor said:

Simply put, we would not be here today at the precipice of such a dangerous move if the Obama policy in the Middle East wasn't naïve, arrogant, misguided and dangerous.

It must be said, first, that Israel is our oldest and strongest democratic ally in the Middle East and has been for more than 60 years. The Obama policy of moral equivalency, which gives equal standing to the grievances of Israelis and Palestinians, including the orchestrators of terrorism, is a dangerous insult.

There is no middle ground between our allies and those who seek their destruction. America should not be ambivalent between the terrorist tactics of Hamas and the security tactics of the legitimate and free state of Israel. By proposing 'indirect talks" through the U.S. rather than between Palestinian leaders and Israel, this administration encouraged the Palestinians to shun direct talks.

Notice, he did not accuse the President of supporting  the Nazis.

A transcript of the September 21 exchange:

5:07pm EDT

[On Perry saying that Obama's Israel policy has been appeasement.]

CHRIS MATTHEWS: This is the kind of language you use when you go to war with another country. It's certainly not the language you use against your own President as he is about to address the United Nations and when you know he's going to give a strong defense of Israel.

JOAN WALSH: Right.

MATTHEWS: When you know he's going to stand out there all alone in the world, pretty much. I don't know who else is voting with this time Israel this time on this issue. We are, for sure. I have to say any president right now would be, but here he is about to stand there all alone in the world and this guy pulls the rug out from under him and accuses him of, basically, pro-Nazi behavior.

WALSH: Right.

MATTHEWS: We know what appeasement means. It means Neville Chamberlain. It means-

WALSH: He's pulling Hitler into this, which is a very horrible thing to do. It's ignorant, Chris. He's even gone beyond what some Israelis want. He's calling for- maybe the U.S. should cut off its aid to the Palestinian authority. Our aid funds security there. So, he knows nothing about this issue. He is- he's ignorant as ignorant can be, and he also is playing politics because Rick Perry knows he'll have a really hard time getting the Jewish vote if he should be nominated.

...

MATTHEWS: Why is it scary to any thoughtful member who is a citizen of Israel? Because, what use do some of these-right-wing Christians have for Israel? The end of day, right?

Well, at least Neville Chamberlain is one up on the Won.

Submitted by UpNorth on Wed, 09/21/2011 - 6:23pm.

He didn't bow to Hitler and Mussolini. Or, bend over to look either of them in the eye, as the WH laughingly claimed, trying to cover for O bowing to the kind of Saudi Arabia.

And, I doubt that Neville ever bowed to a mayor.

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

"pulling Hitler into it"?

Submitted by michiganruth on Wed, 09/21/2011 - 7:55pm.

erm...how did he do that? it's like when MoDowd "heard" Joe Wilson shout "You lie BOY"--altho I'm pretty sure she knew he didn't really say that, whereas Chrissy seems to believe what he spews.

I heard Perry's speech--twice, actually--and thought it was amazing. right now, he's got my vote in the primaries. (but my heart still belongs to you, Gov. Christie!)

the libs must be terrified to be this delusional.

michiganruth...

Submitted by Jer on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 3:08am.

The Dowd and Matthews episodes aren't quite symmetrical, although both involve unwarranted criticisms of the Republican politicians who were the targets of these two liberal pundits' scorn. Dowd attached implicit language [the unspoken "boy" in Wilson's outburst] and Matthews conjured up an allegation of taboo activity ["pro-Nazi behavior"] via Perry's usage of the term "appeasement".

Liberals and conservatives will generally disagree over the propriety of Wilson's and Perry's remarks. But reasonable minds should agree that both Dowd and Matthews were guilty of flawed logic and rhetorical excess.

Submitted by grammajane on Wed, 09/21/2011 - 7:57pm.

Tingles is getting worse each day with his name calling of Conservatives. What's with radical libs and their always turning to bashing and name calling when they try and get a point across. Usually, a meaningless point. If this continues, he will probably lose his 2 viewers and most people will just go to Newsbusters to hear another profound stupid remark by this Marxist Lover and just laugh it off. Christ, Obama SAYS actual things and they ignore it or "explain he meant something else", here Perry and MANY say one thing and these same (D)-bags explain it as something totally different.

This bozo drank so much of

Submitted by BoilerFan on Wed, 09/21/2011 - 8:20pm.

This bozo drank so much of the Obama Kool-Aid that he can't stand the fact that it's all slowly but steadily coming unraveled. When Obama's cheerleaders in the national media simply make up ridiculous stuff like this, when we're still more than a year out from the 2012 election, it drives home just how desperate these liberals have become. They'll pull every charge possible out of their bag of rhetorical tricks to keep "the One" in the White House. Can't believe Matthews still has his own show. Only on MSNBC, I suppose.

James Carville's advice to Obama - PANIC! and..

Submitted by greggy on Wed, 09/21/2011 - 10:02pm.

that's exactly what the Obama sycophants are doing right now. When you are so openly desperate as to just flat out lie, to create the most transparent fabrications, to blatantly and willfully mischaracterize and misinterpret a statement like this, it shows any thinking person that you're losing your marbles. Remember this from lunatic Schultz a few weeks ago?

"That black cloud Perry's talking about, is President Obama."

When you're on the Left, and even Jon Stewart is calling you out on the crazy - you really ARE crazy.

Speaking of which:
"Chris Matthews is about two glasses of Scotch away from being Ron Burgundy".
(Jon Stewart)

Additionally, the projection here is so obvious it's laughable. The Left has been "pulling Hitler into it" and "calling people Nazis" for at least 50 years. Have they already forgotten all the "BusHitler" t-shirts, protest signs, and bumper stickers? No, of course they haven't forgotten - they just project their own tactics onto us. They're certifiably nuts, and the more calm we remain, the more crazy and panicked they'll become.

Joan Walsh and Chris Matthews are already well on their way to straight-jackets..

Nazism (Nationalsozialismus)

Nazism (Nationalsozialismus) =National Socialism.

Let's review: Obama nationalized GM, healthcare, student loans, labor through the NLRB and is attempting to run the banks. He's increased the size of gov't 30% and is trying to order Boeing who to hire and where to set up shop.

He's a Nazi.

I don't know about him being "pro-Nazi", but one thing...

Submitted by jawebster1 on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 3:51am.

I know for sure and that is, he is our first ever president to not be "pro-American".

I knew he was no good from the first time I read about him. Too bad for our Country not enough people saw him the same way that I did.

Unfortunately, the alternative, John McCain wasn't a whole lot better. Maybe, if we get a good Conservative president elected in 2012, who can turn things around, this hell that we are going through now, may have been worth it.

I guess you can say, I'm hoping for a change.

"if we get a good Conservative President..."

Submitted by texasborngranny on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 2:27pm.

this can not happen if a large portion of the populace continue to listen to the LSM's (liberal slime media) pro-obama propaganda.

It is disturbing that the U.S. public who watch the LSM grow ever more intellectually and morally debased with each hour they watch. Such incompetence and ignorance on the part of a citizenry can easily, as we've seen, lead to tyranny.

Appeasement didn't start with

Submitted by eaglewingz08 on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 7:54am.

Appeasement didn't start with Neville Chamberlain and didn't end with him. Appeasement goes to supporting America's enemies, and thus have been used with pro communist politicians and pro radical islamists. Unless Chrissie wants to call communists and radical islamists nazis, he makes no sense, as usual.
