Hypocritical Matthews Slams 'Nasty' Perry's Attacks on Obama

On his syndicated program, Sunday, Chris Matthews slammed Rick Perry for being too "nasty" to Barack Obama. The liberal host also wondered if the fact that Perry is not a Mormon gives southerners a "permission slip" to like him.

Speculating on the Texas Governor's popularity, Matthews theorized, "Do you think part of this southern appeal of this guy, who is to most of us this guy, Rick Perry, is he's not a Mormon. He's a Southern Baptist."

The NBC anchor then suggested sinister motives behind his supporters: "And a lot of it is that permission slip people give themselves, 'Oh, I'm not bigoted on race or religion, but I just like this guy.'"

On his self-titled program, Matthews said of the presidential candidate: "Some people like- apparently on the right- the fact that [Perry's] so nasty against Obama."

Just in the last week, Matthews has used his other program, Hardball, to compare Perry to segregationist Bull Connor.

He also suggested that the governor would have opposed integration. On Sunday, Matthews wondered if the GOP was the "nasty party." Matthews certainly knows something about being nasty.

A transcript of the exchanges from the August 21, 2011 Chris Matthews Show can be found below:

10:10am EDT

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Do you think part of this southern appeal of this guy, who is to most of us this guy, Rick Perry, is he's not a Mormon. He's a Southern Baptist. And a lot of it is that permission slip people give themselves, 'Oh, I'm not bigoted on race or religion, but I just like this guy.'

RICHARD STENGEL: Well, he checks all the boxes on the right and he doesn't have to actually say all those conservative things all the time because people know he does that. So it'll be fine with that. But I think it's not so much about reaction to Mormonism, it's a reaction to Obama. It makes the contrast with Obama seem much greater than it--than Romney does. Romney and Obama, if you blur a little bit, they can seem pretty similar.

MATTHEWS: Yeah.

STENGEL: Perry and Obama, no.

MATTHEWS: Yeah. That's very true. Some people like--apparently on the right--the fact that he's so nasty against Obama.

JOHN HEILEMANN: Yeah.

MATTHEWS: They like that.

HEILEMANN: The Republican Party is a very conservative party now and a lot of people in the Republican Party don't believe that Mitt Romney is a genuine conservative. That is always going to be a huge problem for him going forward.

MATTHEWS: Is it a nasty party?

HEILEMANN: Well, there is a piece of it that obviously is very angry. And just to your point about the middle, the middle--there are a lot of different parts of the middle. There are a lot of suburban mothers who are--moms who are not going to like Rick Perry. But there's an angry downscale part of the middle and they are mad about the economic condition of the country.

Chrissy, should Gov. Perry

Chrissy, should Gov. Perry strike a more civil tone and say that President Obama should "go straight to hell"? Would that be less nasty?

"Do you think part of this southern appeal of this guy, who is to most of us this guy, Rick Perry, is he's not a Mormon. He's a Southern Baptist.

Another example of Matthews' incoherence of late. He can't even formulate a couple of sentences.

Then this:

Oh, I'm not bigoted on race or religion, but I just like this guy.'"

What the H does that even mean???

MATTHEWS: Is it a nasty party?

Oooooh.  A NASTY party.  Perhaps that's supposed to sound a lot like NAZI (pronounced NAT-ZEE by some).

HEILEMANN: " But there's an angry downscale part of the middle and they are mad about the economic condition of the country."

Downscale part.  That's Heilemann's way of saying "ignorant white males."

Chris Matthews' Selective Hatred of Mormonism

Submitted by hoodad500 on Mon, 08/22/2011 - 1:07pm.

I'm more than a little distressed that the conservative media doesn't fight back at Chris Matthews and his fellow liberal "news" hacks about their selective hatred/outrage at Mitt Romney being a Mormon. If anti-Mormonism is really their point, then why haven't they ever gone after Harry Reid for also being a Mormon? Oh, you readers weren't aware that Reid is a Mormon? Well, I'm not surprised because the liberal media hacks never seem to mention that fact.

Don't believe me? Do some research. You don't have to dig too deeply to find that out. Seriously, we need to challenge Chris Matthews and every other liberal media "personality" every thime they talk about Mitt Romney's religion without also mentioning harry Reid's religion.

You Mean Its Real, Not an Act?

Submitted by Comrade Jim on Mon, 08/22/2011 - 1:50pm.

I had a different theory. My theory is that MSNBC has an ongoing competition to see which of its commentators can act the craziest, the most deranged, the most clinically insane. Mathews has led this competition for some time. But now the new heavyweight competitor, Al Sharpton, has put pressure on Mathews to intensify his effort to reclaim the lead by acting ever crazier.

Now you come along and say that it isn't an act. He actually is crazy.

Ummmhh. I'll have to think about that. It never occurred to me anybody could be that crazy and still tie his own shoes. Ummmh, maybe he doesn't wear shoes. I have no evidence one way or the other.

Submitted by Rackie on Mon, 08/22/2011 - 1:21pm.

...it's getting harder and harder to read and/or comment on all the liberal nonsense. Just when you think the libs have peaked with their mendacity, they double down. Like they say, "you can't make up this stuff". It's like the libs are just plain, out of their freakin' minds, bat-shit crazy. How can one respond to "nuts"? Lately, I start an IV of Merlot before I even open my "favorites" and click on NewsBusters. But still, it just gets weirder and weirder. Cheers!

This guy is so unbelievably prejudice and intolerant. In other breaking news, zombies have taken over MSNBC and eaten the brains of all the management. NBC has reassured customers that this will not lead to any discernible drop in service.

Southern Baptists vs Mormons

As a former member of 2 Southern Baptist Churches (2 different cities), I think it is no worse being a Mormon than it is being a Southern Baptist. S.B.'s have some pretty outlandish practices, especially with regards to women!

Submitted by deerjerkydave on Tue, 08/23/2011 - 4:02pm.

I'm Mormon. I've spent my life voting for candidates who aren't Mormon. I vote for conservatives, I don't care what denomination they belong to. Right now I believe the race is between Romney and Perry. I'd vote for Perry in a heartbeat if he is 1. conservative, 2. electable. I don't know much about Perry but I think he is fairly conservative. I'm more concerned about electability in the general election. Would he come across too much like GWB? I look forward to hearing more from Perry.
