Joy Behar and Barbara Walters Politicize bin Laden Death: Just Cancel 2012 Election Now

View co-hosts Joy Behar and Barbara Walters on Monday immediately politicized the killing of terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden. After giving credit to Barack Obama for the successful strike, supposedly straight journalist Walters giddily announced, "I would hate now to be a Republican candidate thinking of running."

Liberal comedienne Joy Behar played off a months-old comment by token conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Behar crowed, "As Elisabeth always says, they should just skip the next election."

As the crew sat next to guest Brian Ross, Hasselbeck refused to join in: "Wait a minute. I think it is insane to politicize this event right now and I refuse to partake in that."

[See video below. MP3 audio here. ]

Earlier in the show, Hasselbeck showed the most class, declaring, "But, I have to credit the Obama administration for continuing this pursuit and taking the baton from the Bush administration. Neither of these men wanted to bear this burden. Neither of them would ask for this. But to go ahead and act on it is outstanding."

[Thanks to the MRC's @Keder for the story tip.]

A transcript of the exchange, which aired at 11:22am EDT on May 2, follows:

If the election were held

Submitted by Newsbusterbrown on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:51pm.

If the election were held today, Obama would still lose, but not as much as he would have without UBL's death.

By November 2012, however, any benefit from bin Laden's death will be virtually non-existent.

Having said that, Obama deserves some credit here. Feels weird saying that, but it's true.

some credit

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 12:58pm.

The way the LSM is going about it, you'd think the Chairman came up with the idea all on his own.

In reality, he probably had the information brought to him, had some advisors make suggestions, had military/CIA (since this was apparently CIA led) draw up plans, and he just had to sign off on it.

He could have easily said no.  So yeah, just saying yes or no to a mission, that's about all the credit he really deserves, especially when he made it about him (way more than necessary) even after crediting the forces that took the actions.

If a real leader had been in place, that leader wouldn't have credited himself in any way at all.  He would have thanked the soldiers and call them heroes.

Agreed Jon.
The problem I have is that even though the president should get some credit for this, the president himself will be the first to say he deserves every bit of praise that rains on him for this op.

If he wasn't such a narcissistic, classless boob, with a sycophantic media right in lock step, it'd be a lot easier to give him some props on this.

That's the only credit I'm giving him, Jon. Beyond that, GWB deserves far more credit at the executive branch level, IMO.

As if. Which program did Bush put into place that is specifically responsible for the death of bin Laden? Was it the Navy SEAL program?  Or was it simply the "go find bin Laden" order he gave back in '01?  How about crediting the intelligence that led us to bin Laden?  Or the SEALs who risked their lives to capture the most notorious criminal in American history?

The ignored reality is that the only way to prove Bush had any effect in the death of bin Laden is if Bush was still president.  But that time has passed.

There is plenty of blame to go around, from the CIA to the FBI, but to place it all upon one person makes it sound like one person was responsible for the entire safety of America.  Knowing so little about the operation at this time it is impossible to know who exactly is responsible for the event, but there is one thing that is certain: President Obama gave the kill order as Commander in Chief.

ADK.

I'm not really sure what your reply is trying to say- what blame? what details are you missing from the operation?- but I'll try to respond as best as I can.

Gorelick was a political appointee to the DoJ -as I'm sure you're aware- who followed leftist dogma to the tee regarding intelligence gathering and sharing among the nation's intelligence centers and law enforcement agencies. Like all leftist, she apparently believed that every "criminal" -be it a wartime act, within or out of our geographical boundaries and citizenship laws- is a democratic voter and should be afforded every protection known to man; even some made up by woman.

Had the protections she put in place as a civilian political appointee of the Clinton administration remained in effect throughout the war on terror, not only is likely that we would have released KSM on Miranda grounds, but every high-valued terrorist would have been immediately bused to the nearest ACORN facility and registered to vote. We surely would not have had "actionable intelligence".

Fortunately this is not the case and Ms. Gorelick is busy defending BP rather than terrorist master-minds. The only proof needed that term-limits are a saving grace.

As for Obama giving the order: would you suggest that Bush would not have given that order?

Curiously, there wasn't a word said about the Gorelick "wall"

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 7:13pm.

during the 2000 campaign, nor was there even the hint of an effort by the Bush administration to amend the policy regarding the sharing of evidence/information prior to 9/11. Perhaps that's because Gorelick didn't build a wall from scratch, but simply clarified pre-existing but blurred guidelines which had led to confusion.

We do know this: If McCain had been elected and had adhered to his campaign pledge, Osama Bin Laden would still be sitting comfortably in Pakistan contemplating ways to kill Americans.

You didn't like the comedic

Submitted by bkeyser on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 7:48pm.

You didn't like the comedic value of that post Jer? I thought the part about democrats and criminal voters was pretty funny.

But of course your right, since the Gorelick wall wasn't mentioned during the 2000 campaign, it's debilitating effects on international intelligence gathering is a red herring. It had nothing at all to do with the successes gained by Al Qaeda during the years leading up to 9/11, because, well, GW didn't mention it on the campaign trail. And, apparently since it wasn't brought up during the 2000 election campaign trail, the Gorelick wall -as it is commonly known- was just an ancillary observation by the 9/11 commission and was one of those "eh, if you feel like altering this policy, go right ahead" afterthoughts.

Maybe I should put it this way: The tendency to assign praise or blame on a political philosophy is the result of a country polarized by events past. And yet we should still be capable of looking beyond politics and learn the lessons of past mistakes. The "Gorelick Wall" was a major mistake in the era of Radical Islamic terrorism; one that was based upon ideological grounds and secured in place by ideological partisans. It was exposed largely by the theretofore unforeseen 9/11 attacks and corrected by the Bush Administration. When Guttermouth asked what specific policy initiated by Bush that led to the killing of OBL, I offered that, that one --removal of the Gorelick Wall-- was instrumental in the ability of our vast network of intelligence gatherers to focus their efforts and share their findings to piece together the puzzle that led to the bullet in OBL's horseface.

I appreciate your desire to defend the Clinton administration at the drop of a hat, but in this case, their policy was wrongheaded and damaging to our country. Surely not intentionally, but it was proven to be so. Denying that is childish. Thankfully it was illuminated and corrected. I would hope that you could agree on at least the last point.

Slade Gorton is a RINO.

This is in you link : "Congress created the walls that were in place before September 11 — such as the National Security Act’s prohibition on U.S. intelligence agency spying on Americans and the Posse Comitatus Act — that have nothing to do with the Department of Justice memo."

Gives a clue about what BS the article is. The National Security Act doesn't cover foreign nationals in the US, especially ones with expired visas, which describes several of the 9/11 hijackers. The Posse Comitatus Act (1) didn't stop Clinton from using the military against the wackos in Waco and (2) the CIA is not the Military. That would be the DIA. Moreover, the CIA and DIA would merely have told the FBI that these persons of interest were inside the US ... had the Department of Justice memo not prevented them.

There is more BS later in the article claiming that Ashcroft could havce simply revoked the 'wall' with a stroke of the pen if that was all that Gorelick used to create it. This of course presupposes Ashcroft even knew about a policy that by that time was S.O.P. I think it likely no one at the civil service career level mentioned it to him because it was 'routine', nothing remarkable. Are you going to risk your career standing to elevate routine as an issue? I don't think so.

And .. as a kicker,Gorton apparently doesn't think Gorelick's participation in the 911 Commision where she in part investigated her own conduct, was a conflict of interest.

I'm familiar with Gorelick, so I'll skip over that section of your dissertation.

So the relevant portion would be your last line, a rhetorical question (perhaps?) that wasn't necessarily up for debate.  Do I think Bush WOULDN'T have given the order?  Only if I bought the Michael Moore conspiracy, which I did not.  But still it appears you're assigning the task of national security to one person.  And at no time has anyone credibly linked the killing of bin Laden to policies no longer in place credited to Gorelick.

It's speculation at this time. The Gorelick wall coming down, which undoubtedly led to advances in intelligence gathering, does nothing to explain the accomplishment of the mission.

How can you say that it wasn't a change in strategy ushered in by Obama that led to the death of bin Laden?  It's as possible a scenario as crediting the Bush administration.

As of 11/09

Current U.S. policy includes the use of missiles fired from unmanned drones on insurgent locations limited to roughly 50 miles inside the western border; training in two military camps for the Pakistani Frontier Corps; and intelligence exchanges. It prohibits kinetic, or active, operations by U.S. ground forces inside Pakistan.

Now today we know that US troops conducted a ground operation in the killing of bin Laden.  And I know my logic isn't well respected, but please tell me you recognize yesterday's mission as a change in strategy, or at the very least, policy.

Don't confuse strategy with tactical operations

Submitted by bkeyser on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 8:48pm.

We use JSOC all the time, you just don't hear about it. And there's a reason for that.

In this case there was a high-value target, possibly the most highly-valued target there was, and reasons not to destroy evidence of the kill. This particular aspect of the policy I completely agree with. Whether Osama was within 50 miles of the border was immaterial; he was too important a target to not act upon. Plus, he was located at his residence; a place he was likely to remain for some time; we were aware that he was there for at least a period of months, if not years. Had we not known his location but was observed in a vehicle along a dusty mountain pass, then yeah, send in the Predators. I'm sure both Bush and Obama would have done that. Clinton too.

The particulars of the mission are defined by the five paragraph order SMEAC. The "S" stands for "situation". Once that is determined, the mission proceeds with that as it's backdrop. This was not a change in policy or strategy. Is was a tactical operation specific to an ongoing strategy- that being, kill OBL.

In fact, nobody came or went. And no telephone or Internet lines ran from the compound. The CIA soon believed that bin Laden was hiding in plain sight, in a hideout especially built to go unnoticed. But since bin Laden never traveled and nobody could get onto the compound without passing through two security gates, there was no way to be sure.

Despite that uncertainty, intelligence officials realized this could represent the best chance ever to get to bin Laden. They decided not to share the information with anyone, including staunch counterterrorism allies such as Britain, Canada and Australia.

BK, you'll not convince these brainy liberals anything....

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 05/03/2011 - 1:07pm.

...about military operations. They know it all. You, my friend, are arguing from experience and first hand knowledge, which in liberal land doesn't matter.

Here's some more interesting info, from the British papers which are usually better informed, faster, than what we're getting here.  The CIA was apparently convinced back in February that Abbottobad was where OBL was holed up, but the situation became more complicated:

America's strained relationship with Pakistan was plunged into fresh turmoil by the arrest of Raymond Davis, a CIA contractor who had shot dead two Pakistanis in January.

U.S. officials feared that he would be killed if Bin Laden was executed. A tense few weeks ensued until Davis's release on March 16.

Then there was the matter of WikiLeaks. Just weeks before Sunday night's raid, the whistleblower website had published a tranche of new secret documents.

These made reference to named ‘couriers’ carrying Bin Laden’s message to his followers, and also to Abbottabad as a possible Al Qaeda bolthole.

The liberals and liberal media are holding this decision out as some sort of brilliance on Obama's part.  Not from where I'm looking at it.  It was the only decision to make.  He was painted into a corner.  Using cruise missiles inside of Pakistan's borders is just as provacative as sending in troops.  Furthermore, missiles leave open a couple of bad results, as well...."collateral damage" (as this was in a residential neighborhood), and blowing to smithereens any remains, thereby leaving uncertainty as to proof of who was actually killed.   A six month basic recruit would reach the same decision as Obama did.

We'll hear more in the future, naturally, as the details of the operation get out.  Obama is fortunate that the downed helicopter didn't result in a Desert One situation (which I've read about extensively, what a mess)....but I wonder how high Barry's blood pressure got as he micro-managed this operation.

Sad to politicize this

Submitted by MissMinPhx on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 1:32pm.

The death of a man should not be a political issue, and pretending that only Democrats wanted Bin Laden captured or killed is delusional. If dems try to make this a campaign issue, it will fail. In the end, having Bin Laden on the loose made little difference in the lives of most Americans. Al Queda has never been able to carry out another significant attack on America since 9-11. The economy and gas prices will be the big issues in the campaign if things don't improve. I wouldn't want to be Obama, going into the election, with $5 gas and a double dip recession, saying "well, at least we got Bin Laden." That won't go over very well. Now if gas prices improve and we don't get hit with another gas-related economic slow down, Obama will be very hard to bean.

People who have to make their own living are having a difficult time in America right now. There's this little thing we call "economics" (you'll learn about it in school some day) where the current administration is not very skilled.  Their many missteps and bad policies are causing a lot of people to be out of work, and the dollar to be very weak (you'll learn about that concept some day, too), and the country to be at risk because of enormous debt and deficit (again, the difference between the two will hopefully be part of your curriculum one day).

For now, it's OK for you to enjoy yourself while you're still living with your folks.  Believe what you like, and hope that, by the time you have to make your own way in the world, America will have a different president and a better economic profile.

Oh, and we'll expect you back to take your licks the next time your hero is in the news for his own policies instead of his predecessor's.

Funny, the Dems had the same

Submitted by dscott on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 2:47pm.

Funny, the Dems had the same arrogant attitude to the run up of the 2010 elections. How did that work out for them? There are a number of issues of which energy is just but one major failing of this regime. There are millions of unemployed people who in all probability will be holding Obama responsible for their joblessness. Bush did it, won't fly on Nov 2012. Will the price of food be coming down anytime soon before the elections? Not likely and we know who is to blame for that one, don't we...the bitter AGW ethanol clinger.

But it will be interesting to see under what circumstances the price of gas will come down. Would that be because Obama gave in to domestic drilling? Continued to allow fracking even though liberals oppose it? If you are still around NB on Nov 3rd 2012 we will see who gets to eat crow.

If gas prices go up to $6 or $7 a gallon, the afterglow from this will be snuffed right out.

In Nov. 2012, our debt will still be out of control. Corn-based ethanol will still be driving up food prices. We STILL won't be drilling our own oil. Even more of that awful ObamaCare will have come into effect, making things much worse for businesses who are unable to get exemptions. God knows how many jobs will be killed and businesses will go under thanks to Obama's authoritarian EPA. Unions will still be bullying taxpayers and job-providing companies. Those companies that can will flee overseas, but the taxpayers are stuck with SEIU thugs.

Obama's policies will still be hurting this country. But "he" got Bin Laden, right? You really, actually think THAT'S going to be the only thing on people's minds when they go into the voting booth?

Oh wait, you're just an Obama fanboy-troll trying to rile up people who don't salivate over Obama as much as you. The only problem is, "alternative energy" doesn't actually exist right now, and even if it did, depending on its composition, there is no national distribution system set up for it, and that will take years to build, just like it did with our current energy distribution infrastructure.

Someday someone may stumble onto a viable alternative energy source or develop a realistic technology, but that will be years down the road - perhaps decades, and most of us won't be around to see it.

In the meantime, we have to survive as a nation with a vibrant economy so as to be able to take advantage of what alternative sources might come along. $7/gal+ at the pump isn't going to get us there.

And if/when those sources or technologies are discovered or invented, it won't be the bloated, clumsy federal government that wills them into existence, but a healthy, efficient private sector, which we aren't likely to have if we stay on the road we are currently traveling.

I just don't get why these green energy people cannot see this.

Then again, they have never exactly been all that supportive of a healthy and expanding economy to begin with.

This is the same ridiculous fantasy the make believe media wanted in 2008! The MBM is still carrying Ears' water, but they can't hide forever the fact that he is in b-i-g trouble.  Here are three good reasons:

  1. The rotten economy continues to bleed jobs:
  2. Gas prices are out of control:
  3. The government keeps on spending and spending!

Come on, GOP!  Get a candidate with real nerve and put him/her against Ears next year!

As Shawn said on another thread, (I paraphrase) just because Obama gets one thing right doesn't erase all his other screw ups.

So now that Obama as a Democrat surpassed what Clinton would not do when he had 10 chances to do, he has the necessary killer instinct to be a leader? Yet for some reason Obama wasn't given very much credit for killing terrorists with drones? It seems to be a real leader/killer you have to risk a soldier's life to make your bones? Sorry Behar, you are going to have to do way better than that. Leadership is NOT a popularity contest any fool who thinks so should be boiled in their own seething caldron of stupidity.

..."Obama took out Osama" bandwagon.

There are a lot of questions that have yet to be answered, and more are cropping up as each hour passes.

There are several aspects of this whole thing that just don't feel right to me, and it isn't just the timing, either.

And I am still questioning why it is that a total media whore dog like Osama suddenly gave up making his threatening videos and sending them off to his friends at Al Jazeera right around 2002 (there have been none since) shortly after which two reports surfaced that Osama had either died of natural causes, or had been assassinated - both of which reportedly happened during that same year, and either of which, if true, would explain the dearth of any further videos.

And now you have a POTUS and CIC who is considered by many not to have the stones for a fight, who kisses Muslim behind at every opportunity, has plummeting poll numbers, and in the space of a week finally releases his (alleged) BC, and then trots out in front of the media with Osama's body (allegedly) in tow - said body which has already reportedly been buried at sea.

I'm not trying to wax too conspiratorial here or anything, but I'm sorry, it all just seems a little too convenient, as Dave's smell meter is getting a couple of hits when sniffing around it.

Americans (and these two) have short memories

Submitted by Restless Legs on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 3:43pm.

Don't they remember that Bush 41 had an 89% approval rating in February 1991... and it plummeted to 29 percent by July 1992? Everyone was hyped about Bush during the early phases of the Gulf War, but the glow faded quickly. Americans tend to have short memories and weak loyalties regarding such things. What delusional reasoning makes them think this incident will have any staying power with voters? 18 months from now, this will NOT be an issue at the ballot box. Dream on, ladies.

The situations are starkly similar.

Both have a military success over a year and a half before the next election. (Though in Bush-41's case, he successfully concluded a war. In Obama's case, the death of bin Laden is welcomed, but does not end the wars).

At this point, the opposition party had no strong candidates yet identified.

Analysts figured that Bush-41 was a shoe-in for er-election.

An unknown governor wins his party's nomination, and runs on perceptions of a week US economy (Data would later show that the US was actually recovering fro recession).

Experts write-off the challenger, but the challenger wins.

Election 2012

Submitted by Crumpets on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 4:36pm.

The election is a long way off and who knows what may lie ahead. The death of bin Laden is 'not the end, it is not even the beginning of the end. But it is perhaps the end of the beginning.' There is still plenty of war on terror left. We can be glad bin Laden is dead, but the Hydra still has many heads left. There is also an economic crisis with $4. gas and massive unemployment. There is still a massive national debt. I doubt that the death of bin Laden will be the major campaign issue that these airheads think it will be.

Great Recession

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Tue, 05/03/2011 - 2:37pm.

Bush should have done everything possible to restrict the crazy lending practices by the GSE's that resulted in the housing bubble, and the bursting of that bubble in 2007-8.  He also should have insisted on some other remedy besides TARP, which was totally flawed.

Bush doesn't get off the hook, but Obama has exponentially compounded the problems and created some new huge ones all on his own.

"Bush doesn't get off the hook, but Obama has exponentially compounded the problems and created some new huge ones all on his own."

I concur. Bush made several bad decisions when it came to government spending and financial issues. That's is true. It is also true that the Democratic controlled Congress also contributed greatly to the increases in spending. And it is also true that Obama has made the situation much, much worse especially the two years in which the Executive and Legislative branches were completely controlled by the Dems.

So I think the 2012 election will boil down to issues which are reflected in a Clintonian catchphrase (or more accurately a Carville-onian catchphrase). Namely, "it's the economy, stupid!"

Submitted by dscott on Wed, 05/04/2011 - 8:44am.

Point of clarification on the GSEs, Bush tried repeatedly to restrict them, he was blocked by Congress and got zero cooperation from the Clinton appointed CEOs at the GSEs.

In fact US Senator Obama on one of the rare occasions he didn't vote PRESENT, voted against reform of the GSEs. Imagine that, the former lawyer for ACORN who forced Citibank to lend money to people who couldn't afford to pay it back voted to block GSE reforms to end such unsound mortgage lending practices. Yes, Obama exponentially made the problem worse by blocking reforms that could have blunted the debacle to a mere recession instead of the Depression we are now experiencing.

On TARP, I would agree with you, he was buffaloed by people whom he thought knew better.

Even with the prognostications of these two dried up has-beens, the fact remains that the '12 election will be won or lost on pocketbook issues. Fortunately, the cretins that watch The View/Oprah/Dr. Phil will not tip the election one way or the other.

As for our present "Commander in Chief," I don't think he has the backbone to command a menu at Spago's. We know that he and the angry wife don't care for the military.

However, there is hope for a change in the family occupying the public housing known as the White House in '12.

No credit to Obama

Submitted by russedav on Mon, 05/02/2011 - 9:06pm.

As with Gates, Obama deserves no real credit for this military operation that was but a hold-over from the prior administration (I didn't say "Bush" since the person in office is irrelevant to our military); the deranged infantile fop is on auto-pilot, having never done an honest day's work, being too busy on the links to actually work or take personal responsibilty, just steal credit from the military personnel that alone deserve credit and ultimately God, sole Creator and Sustainer. If it had been an adult, even Bush, he'd have taken no credit for the operation, the accompanying humility of a true, great president, so unlike the present counterfeit.
And speaking of the operation over which "conservatives" are as giddy as "liberals" in their rejoicing, to introduce a cold blast of reality, remember the dangers of Nuremburg: we were stooges/accomplices of grossly hypocritical and evil soviet self-righteousness (cold-blooded stalinist butchers of 20-30 million) sitting in jugment over relatively innocent nazis (cold-blooded hitlarist butchers of 6-10 million Jews and others), FDR being Stalin's fellow commie-fascist whore, and are now paying for it with the price of 50+ million of our unborn, under God's jugment (and still ignoring the same) for ignoring His warning that vengeance was His alone, having abandoned Christian legal principles for the trials to get the vile soviets on board and so engaging in a vile spectacle of soviet-inspired ungodly lawlessness that made FDR's slavemaster uncle joe proud. This is a time for sober reflection in the fear of God (not disallowing thanksgiving for the death of an evil butcher that has Biblical precedent), not whooping and hollering that should be too much like Joy and Whoopi and Barbara for "conservatives" not to be disquieted. God save us all.

Submitted by m1xram on Tue, 05/03/2011 - 3:54am.

While this is a great day and reaffirms that the Bush Administrations interrogation methods were a great success, people will still have to balance Obama's victory against...

  1. His attacks against the people of Wisconsin.
  2. His siding with drug cartels against the people of Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, and California.
  3. Our government supplying automatic weapons to Mexican drug cartels.
  4. Our government printing money to cause oil prices and inflation to rise.

Wouldn't cancel the election just yet, depends completely on the Republican ticket.
