ABC Locates Victims of Shutdown That Hasn't Happened Yet, Pleases President Obama

An ABC report that preemptively identified possible victims of a government shutdown was so close to White House spin that Barack Obama touted it at a news conference, Wednesday. The President focused on J.T. Henderson, an American whose tax refund could be delayed, a story first highlighted on ABC, April 6.

Good Morning America's Jon Karl on Thursday proudly recounted, "President Obama saw Henderson's story on World News With Diane Sawyer and singled him out last night." An ABC graphic trumpeted, "Obama Singles Out Father: Kentucky man Counting on Refund." The President on Wednesday night quoted from Henderson on World News.

The original World News segment by Jake Tapper shamelessly featured sixth graders who have a field trip to Washington planned. One young girl lamented, "The government is mean." Karl also included this manipulative footage in his GMA report.

Henderson, Wednesday, recounted in a blog how Tapper used Twitter to look for hypothetical victims:

How It All Went Down...

On Twitter (follow me @jthenderson76), I follow Jake Tapper, who is the ABC NewsSenior White House Correspondent.  Today (at around 12:30pm), he asked his Twitter followers if they were worried that a prolonged government shutdown would delay their tax refund checks.  I responded with "In a word, YES."  Within five minutes, Tapper contacted me and asked me to email him our story and how we were dreading not getting our return.

The Media Research Center's Brent Baker noted that Tapper's piece evoked kids with cancer, Ethiopian refugees and whether zoo animals will starve.

A transcript of the April 7, 2011 Good Morning America segment can be found below:

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: But, let's get right to the latest on the government shutdown. Jon Karl is on Capitol Hill. And, Jon, staff have been working through the night on a possible deal. And I guess one of the most tangible signs of progress, when House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid left the White House last night, they actually spoke to the press together for the first time.

JON KARL: Yeah, absolutely. The first sign of real progress. And all sides suddenly seem aware, George, that they really don't want a government shutdown. After the meeting, signs of progress. But still, no deal.

BARACK OBAMA: I thought the meetings were frank. They were constructive. And what they did was narrow the issues and clarify the issues that are still outstanding.

JOHN BOEHNER: We do have some honest differences. But I do think we made some progress.

HARRY REID: Not there yet. But hope lies eternal.

KARL: With time running out, we're learning more about who would be affected. First up, for 800,000 federal workers, it means staying home. Not even the FBI is excluded from that.

ROBERT MUELLER (FBI): There's a number of our persons don't know whether they will be here on Monday.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

KARL: As for the troops, we learned their paychecks won't be mailed out during a shutdown. Although they will get back pay after the government reopens. As for the tax returns, if you file your return electronically, there will be no delay. But if you filed the old-fashioned way, you'll be waiting for your check. Just like J.T. Henderson of Kentucky, an adoptive dad who mailed in his return.

ABC GRAPHIC: Obama Singles Out Father: Kentucky man Counting on Refund

J.T. HENDERSON: It makes me feel disconnected and, like most Americans, angry and frustrated.

KARL: President Obama saw Henderson's story on World News With Diane Sawyer and singled him out last night.

BARACK OBAMA: He said he is counting on his tax rebate because his family has been scraping by. And he might not get it if the government shuts down. So, J.T. said, if he could speak to all of us directly in Washington, he would tell us that all of this political grandstanding has effects as it trickles down to normal, everyday Americans.

KARL: And there's the sixth grade class at Central Elementary in Coleraine, Massachusetts. They've been looking forward to visiting Washington D.C. on Monday.

LITTLE GIRL: The government is mean.

KARL: But now, they may be due for an entirely different kind of civics lesson, as most of the city may be shut down. Now, members of Congress and the President don't have to worry about a government shutdown, as far as their paychecks. Their checks will come regardless of whether or not the government is open for business.

"Hope lies eternal'?

It's "Hope springs eternal", you idiot. "Essay On Man", Alexander Pope, 1733.

I can just imagine if Palin had misquoted that.

Did someone say cowboy poetry?

Submitted by almostacowboy on Thu, 04/07/2011 - 2:08pm.

There was an ol' cowboy named Harry
who decided he wanted to marry,
but his fiance died
so he kept her inside
'cause she was to heavy to carry.

"He said he is counting on his tax rebate because his family has been scraping by."

Imagine a "less government society" where there was a flat tax and nobody had to wait for the IRS to do their thing. Then this man wouldn't have to worry about his rebate at all.

Mean Government

"LITTLE GIRL: The government is mean."

Yes, little girl, the government is mean. That's why we shouldn't rely on it. That's why we should try and exist with as little government as we can.

65th birthday? By the time she gets old, Social Security will be requiring a person to be 85 before they can collect.

"The government is mean."

Submitted by almostacowboy on Thu, 04/07/2011 - 1:23pm.

Well, Mary. The gov't can be mean. But, mostly, it's bloated, greedy, over-bearing, repressive, disreputable, dishonest, self-centered, selfish, self-seeking, deceptive, and disconnected.

The idea was that we would create a "federal" government to do all the things States couldn't; like defend us from foreign invaders. But, something went wrong, and now the government acts like self-anointed royalty to lord over us and force its will upon its citizenry. And, when the citizenry try to stop the government from acting in a way it was never intended for it to, the government gets angry and takes over private property and businesses and tries to take freedom away from the people while telling them it's for their own good and that they just don't appreciate what it's doing for them. So, in that sense, you are right. The government is mean.

Yes, Mary

Submitted by Joe W. on Thu, 04/07/2011 - 3:11pm.

"Yes Mary; there is a Santa Claus...His name is Barack Obama. He and his little elves, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi, are being held hostage by the mean republicans who don't like little girls, and they eat bunny rabbits and kill puppies, too. Can you say, 'mean, nasty, republicans??' I thought you could". Now go on home and tell your mommy and daddy to vote for Barack Obama, and he will save the puppies and bunnies, and he will put a new Chevy Volt in your Daddy's garage. No matter that your Daddy has no job, Mary, Barack has a laser like focus on getting him one. And tell your Mommy that she can have all the birth control pills and abortions she wants if she votes for Mr. Obama. Oh....and Sarah Palin hunts Santa's reindeer, and if she gets any more, you may not get a Christmas present either. Mean republicans....nice democrats....

Well, duhbama, you and your

Submitted by jdhawk on Thu, 04/07/2011 - 3:25pm.

Well, duhbama, you and your party owned the executive and congressional branches up to Jan of this year. Yet, the bunch of you couldn't find any time to put together a budget. Was it because it would have exposed to a greater extent than you already have your socialist agenda?

Meanwhile, the dimocrats are calling "extreme" a .2% reduction in the current budget! Huh? It's dryer fluff; pocket lint . . . .

To J.T.: file your taxes early and via e-tax if you want your refund back in a timely manner. It's not like they haven't been talking about a possible shut down for over a month. Better yet, stop giving Uncle Sam a free loan by figuring a refund of taxes paid. Which planet have you been on up until now?

To the kiddies going to D.C. on Monday. Sounds like your teacher is the one who is being mean.- the National Mall (all the museums, etc.) is closed on Mondays. My advice: do whatever you can to escape a union teacher taught public school education as fast as you can. As you can see, your teacher is an idiot.

ABCs of the "Tipping Point"

Submitted by metaphorsbwithu on Thu, 04/07/2011 - 3:39pm.

I'll be waiting for the media to start digging into Mr. Henderson's personal life to find all the dirt they can, like "Joe the Plumber" ... not!

Interesting, though, is that he recommends the book "The Tipping Point" which pushes the advance of positive epidemics by doing small things to get the ball rolling ... like somehow being invited to speak for average Americans on a national network news program

.

How fortuitous! See? It works!
