Chuck Schumer Caught on Tape Instructing Fellow Dems on How to Spin Media, Networks Ignore

By Scott Whitlock | March 30, 2011 | 16:47

New York Senator Chuck Schumer was caught on tape Tuesday instructing his Democratic colleagues on how to spin the media with regard to “extreme” Republicans and their budget cuts. "I always use extreme...That is what the caucus instructed me to use,” Schumer blurted.

The liberal senator was apparently unaware his comments were being recorded (The remarks were made moments before a conference call with reporters began.) Tuesday’s nightly newscasts on NBC, ABC and CBS all skipped the story. On Wednesday, Good Morning America, Today and Early Show did the same.

The New York Times' Caucus blog explained:

After thanking his colleagues — Barbara Boxer of California, Benjamin L. Cardin of Maryland, Thomas R. Carper of Delaware and Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut — for doing the budget bidding for the Senate Democrats, who are facing off against the House Republicans over how to cut spending for the rest of the fiscal year, Mr. Schumer told them to portray John A. Boehner of Ohio, the speaker of the House, as painted into a box by the Tea Party, and to decry the spending cuts that he wants as extreme. “I always use the word extreme,” Mr. Schumer said. “That is what the caucus instructed me to use this week.”

Other journalists at the Times seemed to follow the proper wording. In a March 30 op-ed entitled "Why We're Fasting," food writer Mark Bittman portrayed the Republicans as willing to “starve” poor Americans “to death”:

"I stopped eating on Monday and joined around 4,000 other people in a fast to call attention to Congressional budget proposals that would make huge cuts in programs for the poor and hungry....These supposedly deficit-reducing cuts — they’d barely make a dent — will quite literally cause more people to starve to death, go to bed hungry or live more miserably than are doing so now. And: The bill would increase defense spending."

While ABC’s GMA found no time for Schumer and his planned spin for journalists, the ABC program did cover breast-feeding dolls and whether it’s “too much too soon.”

CBS’s Early Show featured a former girlfriend of the late JFK Jr. She informed viewers that kissing him was “magical.”

NBC’s Today covered a conversation between two babbling babies.

I feel your pain

Submitted by Blonde on Wed, 03/30/2011 - 7:18pm.

I'll be happy to share Allen West, who hilariously did a Harry Reid imitation last weekend, nancing around decrying the Tea Party as being irrelevant. Then he said, "No Harry, the Tea Party is not going away, because the American People are not going away".

After this incident with Shumer blabbing the democrat strategerie (love that word!) for the world to hear, we know the democrats are frantic about the Tea Party. And as Allen says, it's not over, the last election was merely a shaping battle for the war to come in 2012. And the democrats know this.

I hate to rub it in, but I'm doing the happy dance with 2/3 of my representation right now. Marco Rubio was on Cavuto earlier, that guy rocks, too. 2 down, one to go....Bill Nelson is up next, we need Jeb.

How Can the nets ignore a Horse's Patoot like Upchuck?

Submitted by daveinboca on Fri, 04/01/2011 - 2:45am.

At least the NYT carried it somewhere in their catalogue of disinformation, although they buried it in a blog section. If they'd found Mitch McConnell or some other prominent Republican doing this, it'd be front page-above the fold.

If the Demonrats disn't have a double standard, they'd have no standards at all.

Do We Need..

Submitted by GeneralAl on Wed, 03/30/2011 - 5:40pm.

Do we really need any more proof of how biased the media is? Gee whiz, if this was Mitch McConnell, it would be breaking news from the slimy three. Do these moronic idiots actually think that they will have any credability in the future? If a republican wins in 2012, most people will bow off most of what they say [Except, of course, for the brainless loons who worship at the alter of the Obamessiah!]. Schumer is a piece of trash along with the majority of the Democrats. I wish we could get a good Conservative President with a Conservative Congress who would strip these guys of all their perks including their generous pensions!

defeated old generals who still think they can win

Submitted by MidAmerica on Wed, 03/30/2011 - 7:18pm.

Old Liberal democrats like Schumer don't realize the games up. We are out of other peoples money. Their vision is dead whether they win or lose.

Schumer needs to put medals on his coat, go sit on a bench in Central Park and bother people with stories about how he used to be a war hero.

Mid...

Submitted by Blonde on Wed, 03/30/2011 - 7:33pm.

Here's an excellent piece that was in today's WSJ by Marco Rubio.

Why I Won't Vote to Raise the Debt Limit

Marco knows the jig is up.  I am so pleased that we actively supported both he and Allen West during the last election.  I'm committed to doing the same in 2012, supporting not only my own state's conservatives, but also others.  If these old guard Republicans can't or won't get with the program, we'll just have to primary them.  What Lisa Murkowski did was shameful.

Shumer and the Democrats won't go down without a fight, but we have the momentum behind us if the Republicans don't chicken out.  And with some of the young guns like Rubio, Rand Paul, Allen West, and others, it's going to get very, very interesting.

Rubio is a fine example of the next generation ready to see reality as it is. The old guard, both Republican and democrat, are still viewing todays problems through yesterdays windows. Times have changed. drastically. The boomers need to step aside and let a new generation take over because it is the future that we are fighting for not the present. The future belongs to the young.

Schumer Is The Extremist

Submitted by Blue Collar Todd on Wed, 03/30/2011 - 10:49pm.

Ever notice how Liberals like to accuse others of being what they actually are? In order to get attention off their extreme views, they call others extreme. Senator Chuck Schumer whose extreme views have lead him to celebrate the end of traditional values and come out in favor of gay marriage is calling Republicans extreme over proposed budget cuts.

It's not as if we hadn't already figured out the talking points instructions. When there is suddenly a word or phrase used across the specrum of the liberal media and partisan politicians on the same day, it's not exactly cryptic. The Schumer story is a classic example of Democrats' perfidy. The bonus is the deliberate, purposeful betrayal of the American public by the national news media in ignoring this story.  And then they wonder why Americans no longer trust the "news."

Senator Charles Schumer: God of War

Submitted by thebardofmurdock on Thu, 03/31/2011 - 7:23am.

With apologies to Percy Bysshe Shelley, author of Ozymandias

I met a well-known pundit in D.C.
Who said: Within the Senate leadership
There is against us and our liberty,
One man who carries in his iron grip
The life and death of legislative acts
And temper to destroy, instead of lose,
All those whose voice and vote he feels he lacks
Or those who would his dark demands refuse.
And on his ornate Senate office door
In Latin script of longhand does appear:
“My name is Charles Schumer, God of War:
My bidding do, or I your name will smear.”
And so has he defamed the GOP
With calumny discharged both night and day,
As those uncompromising and extreme:
For they would budget what we can repay.

What a load of schumer. The news media don't even see they are becoming irrelevant themselves now, as their attempts to filter the news are so easily bypassed by the bloggers and e-news stations. I guess all we can do for now is laugh at them.
