Politico Spins the Media's Pro-Obama Bias: Reporters Just Favor 'Centrist' Politicians

According to Politico editors Jim VandeHei and John Harris, Barack Obama is currently "playing the press like a fiddle" by "exploiting some of the most long-standing traits among reporters who cover politics and government — their favoritism for politicians perceived as ideologically centrist."

VandeHei and Harris pointed out journalists such as Christiane Amanpour for lauding the President as "Reaganesque." They then oddly portrayed Obama's good press as a new thing.

The co-authors of February 7 piece flatly denied a hard-left tilt in the media: "Conservatives are convinced the vast majority of reporters at mainstream news organizations are liberals who hover expectantly for each new issue of The Nation. It's just not true."

The editors added:

The majority of political writers we know might more accurately be accused of centrist bias.

That is, they believe broadly in government activism but are instinctually skeptical of anything that smacks of ideological zealotry and are quick to see the public interest as being distorted by excessive partisanship. Governance, in the Washington media’s ideal, should be a tidier and more rational process than it is.

[Emphasis added.]

Yet, at the same time, Harris and VandeHei freely identified the fawning press Obama has received in 2011:

In the category of You Can’t Make It Up, weeks of stories and columns about the comparison culminated with this cover of Time magazine — "Why Obama Loves Reagan" — and a manufactured picture of the two men side by side, smiling optimistically.

Obama couldn’t buy an ad like that.

Absent from their argument is the fact that journalists have been covering for Obama since the first days of his administration (and earlier). A May 2009 study by the MRC on the President's first 100 days found:

Obama’s first 100 days were defined by massive spending, aggressive intervention in the private sector and proposals for a huge expansion of the federal government. Yet none of the networks aired a single story on whether Obama’s policies were pushing the U.S. toward socialism, and no reporter used the term "socialist" to describe Obama.

Not only that, network reporters never used the word "liberal" to describe either Barack Obama or his agenda during the first 100 days.

The networks lavished good press on every major initiative of the early Obama administration, including the massive stimulus package, all of the various bailouts, health care, stem cells, the environment and foreign policy.

In the days before the President unveiled his unprecedented $3.5 trillion budget — with a record-shattering $1.75 trillion deficit — four out of five statements on the evening newscasts parroted the White House spin that Obama was a deficit fighter.

Perhaps the Politico editors will explain Obama's good press, going back before 2011.

I read this piece this

Submitted by Liberallies on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 7:00pm.

I read this piece this morning. This article is full of Liberal and pro-Obama propaganda. I found it ironic that this guy was bending over backwards praising Obama, kissing his behind and at the same time claiming there is no Liberal media bias. LOL

I found it ridiculous that the writers claimed that Clinton did not get good media coverage!!

This is the Left wing media doing their best to follow the Obama's administrations orders to portray Obama as Reagan. Politico is just carrying water for Obama.

Dimwits

Submitted by SimJim on Tue, 02/08/2011 - 1:12pm.

I love it when liberals try to speak for conservatives.  Rather than conservatives being convinced that progressive liberals hover expectantly for The Nation, we actually believe they hover expectantly for Politico.  Liberals miss the boat again...on purpose.

I'm not aware of any conservative equilavent to The Nation.  Progressives play this same game when they try to compare Fox News with MSNBC.  Conservatives have no match for MSNBC.  I'd argue we don't have a match for CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS either, but at most, Fox News compares with these news organizations a heck of a lot more than it compares with MSNBC.

This liberal trick to compare conservative outlets to unrivaled loony progressive (oops, redundant) institutions is effective in degrading the legitimacy of conservative thought.  Conservative need to stop playing along and set the record straight every time progressives use this deceitful tactic.

Left will run Obama in 2012

Submitted by LAM SON 719 on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 7:29pm.

Left will run Obama in 2012 using the personality cult platform, claim that he is a centerist without ever discussing where he actually was center. The unfortunate fact is that the republicans and useful idiots (independents) will fall for this again. The new republican senators and house members are already back pedailing and pandering to the " bi-parstian" trash the left is spouting.

Non, je ne regrette rien. "You aren't angry because I might be a racist, you're angry because you know I'm right".

And keep our lawmakers on the straight and narrow.

I'll not ever regret again, either.

The media is Obama's Fiddle and they feature HIS tunes!

Submitted by cbeyer on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 8:32pm.

The premise of this article is laughable.  Can you imagine if GWB or any Republican were president with unemployment at 10%?  The media would have a field day with its 'misery indexes', profiles of the poor and constant references to a failed presidency.  The dominant media (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, the wire services and most major city editorial pages) fawned all over Obama leading up to his election.  His notable campaign gaffes were ignored and interviews of Obama were slanted with softball questions while vilification of anything conservative continued.

Obama's self serving 'move to the center' has been lauded in the mainstream media beause they were aware he was losing the independents.  Regardless of the sad state of our economy and a disasterous and perilous approach to energy policy, the media will be the major reason Obama will be reelected.   Is it a conpiracy?  Of course not....media bias is simply based on the fact that poll after poll shows that most media elites tilt to the left.

I find it ironic that the mainstream media and liberals are so bothered by Fox News and talk radio.  These media outlets serve only to provide a slight bit of balance to an otherwise overwhelming tilt to the left in print and the major networks.  If the media is Obama's fiddle and they play him so well, its simply because they want it that way.   They will continue to vilify Sarah Palin with relentless vile and hatred (and other conservatives to a lesser extent).  In the meantime Obama will get a free ride.

the "center" of what??

Submitted by wizardjr on Mon, 02/07/2011 - 9:56pm.

Maybe the center of old Red Square? Or perhaps the center stage of the CPUSA?

Continuing reports comming out of the Waffle House that he is disconnected from all that's going on around him... EXCEPT his reelection. This is so very, very dangerous. Our country is being run by a herd of unelected Alinskys running amok in the West Wing while Nero shoots some hoops.

Thanks a flamming lot 52%.
