ABC Sets Up Sting Operation to Find Racism in AZ Immigration Law, Hires Actor to Play a Bigot

By Scott Whitlock | February 03, 2011 | 12:58

ABC and reporter John Quinones on Thursday stretched the bounds of journalism, hiring an actor to play a racist security guard as a way of testing how the people of Arizona would react to the state's "anti-immigration law."

Previewing the network's "What Would You Do?" segment for Friday's Primetime Live, Quinones explained the undercover concept: "So, I go undercover, pretending to be someone who is about to be arrested and deported, simply by the way I look."

The piece featured a cartoonish "security guard" harassing Mexican actors in Tucson, Arizona. Presumably, ABC chose a security guard because impersonating a police officer is illegal. The actor walked into a restaurant and spewed, "I'm just looking to make sure these guys are legal citizens. And if they're not legal citizens, they shouldn't be here. They should be deported. They look Mexican."

Of course, having this man pretend to be a security guard really makes no sense. (A security guard is going to deport people?) Secondly, for journalists that often attack conservative sting operations, it's rather odd to see ABC manipulate such a scenario.

[See video below. MP3 audio here.]

The Radio, Television and Digital News Association ethics guide states: "Use surreptitious newsgathering techniques, including hidden cameras or microphones, only if there is no other way to obtain stories of significant public importance and only if the technique is explained to the audience." Was this the only way ABC could do such a story?

Previewing the segment, Quinones misstated what Arizona's law actually is. He asserted, "So, we took our cameras down to Arizona, where a controversial, new law would give police the authority to question and perhaps deport anyone who, in their eyes, appears to be in the U.S. illegally."

This is false. Byron York of the Washington Examiner explained in an April 26, 2010 column:

Critics have focused on the term "reasonable suspicion" to suggest that the law would give police the power to pick anyone out of a crowd for any reason and force them to prove they are in the U.S. legally. Some foresee mass civil rights violations targeting Hispanics.

What fewer people have noticed is the phrase "lawful contact," which defines what must be going on before police even think about checking immigration status. "That means the officer is already engaged in some detention of an individual because he's violated some other law," says Kris Kobach, a University of Missouri Kansas City Law School professor who helped draft the measure. "The most likely context where this law would come into play is a traffic stop."

After playing clips of the "security guard" arguing with patrons as he harassed Mexicans, Quinones lectured, "And what we kept hearing over and over from folks was that they all knew about the anti-immigration law. What they didn't realize until we staged our scenario was how it might affect innocent people, Latinos, George who are in this country legally."

Notice the use of "anti-immigration" rather than anti-illegal immigration.

A previous "What Would You Do?" segment featured "ugly Americans" in Paris. In January of 2009, overweight and wearing George W. Bush t-shirts, these actors showcased obnoxious behavior in Europe.

Quinones smeared, "They're the ugly Americans. And for more than a century, they've been fixtures in American literature and film."

A transcript of the February 3 segment, which aired at 7:44am EST, follows:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

7:30am tease

ROBIN ROBERTS: Also this morning, imagine being threatened with deportation, even though you haven't committed a crime and it's all because of how you look. John Quinones goes undercover to Arizona's controversial immigration law.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: His ultimate, "What would you do?"

7:44

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: We're going to turn now to our undercover report from the front lines of the border wars. Arizona's immigration law passed last year. It stirred up a lot of controversy. So, John Quinones went to Tucson to put people's attitudes to an unusual test. And as I said earlier, this is sort of an ultimate, "What would you do?"

JOHN QUINONES: Yes. We took it all the way to Arizona. You know, what does, George, an illegal immigrant look like? What does he sound like? So, we took our cameras down to Arizona, where a controversial, new law would give police the authority to question and perhaps deport anyone who, in their eyes, appears to be in the U.S. illegally. So, I go undercover, pretending to be someone who is about to be arrested and deported, simply by the way I look. [Video of protests.] These people are protesting for and against Arizona's new immigration law. We travel 70 miles north, to Tucson, Arizona and install our hidden cameras at this popular restaurant. BK. Carne Asada and Hot Dogs. This security guard is an actor hired by What Would You Do? And so are the people he's harassing.

WHITE "SECURITY GUARD": Excuse me. Sorry to interrupt. If I could see some identification. You don't belong here.

QUINONES: How will patrons react to the guard asking for identification from a Latino man, a Latino family or even me?

WHITE "SECURITY GUARD": I just want to see some ID and make sure everything's okay. Everybody's like, "Oooh!" It's no big deal. I'm just looking to make sure these guys are legal citizens. And if they're not legal citizens, they shouldn't be here. They should be deported. They look Mexican.

QUINONES: The wheels in this woman's head are turning. But, wait until you hear her plan.

WHITE WOMAN: He just called for a ride. He's going to try and get him deported because he doesn't have any papers. You gotta get those two guys out of here.

WHITE "SECURITY GUARD": All I'm doing is I'm just looking out for everyone's safety.

WHITE WOMAN: You're racial profiling. You totally racial profiled!

WHITE "SECURITY GUARD": Looks like a duck, smells like a duck.

WHITE WOMAN: Looks like [bleeped] is [bleeped].

QUINONES: She then unveils her incredible plot to help me escape.

WHITE WOMAN: You guys have to get out of here. Do they need to go out the back door, do you think? Where's your car? Where's your car? Where's your car? I can drive over there and meet you right there.

QUINONES: Did she really say what we think she said?

WHITE WOMAN: You run out that door. And I'll bring your car right over there.

QUINONES: I'm a reporter. I'm with ABC News. I'm John Quinones.

WHITE WOMAN: Oh. I know who you are.

QUINONES: You jumped right in. You were going to take us in your car.

WHITE WOMAN: I was actually going to get your car and bring it around and meet you over there.

QUINONES: Why get involved?

WHITE WOMAN: Maybe you have family, mothers, children. And I would feel bad if you got separated from them and shipped across the other direction.

QUINONES: It's amazing how people responded. And what we kept hearing over and over from folks was that they all knew about the anti-immigration law. What they didn't realize until we staged our scenario was how it might affect innocent people, Latinos, George who are in this country legally.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Boy, it looks like a fascinating report. Okay, thanks, John. You can see it tomorrow night on Primetime. What Would You Do?"at 9/8 central.

I write and produce Christian radio programs, and I was just this week editing a sermon and the pastor made the exact same reference to the abortion industry as sacrifices to Molech. It's funny that the MSM considers a contrived issue like this immigration thing to be newsworthy, while you and I pay our taxes so millions of babies can be slaughtered every year. ABC doesn't see anything newsworthy there.

From what I've been able to tell, Molech was more a god of pleasure and hedonism than anything else.

Setting aside that many women go through extreme emotional distress afterwards, there can be no question abortion is aimed at allowing women to carry on as they did before.

There is also a belief among Democrats that Blacks, in particular, are incapable of controlling their mating instincts, hence the building of abortion clinics in close proximity to black inner-city communities. (Ruth Bader Ginsberg ("undesirables")

I recently had a fruitless back and forth with a lefty commenter on another site. He claimed the American Psychiatric Association has released a study saying that abortion patients have no negative psychiatric or emotional problems post-abortion. Besides the fact that the moron believed everything he read, isn't this the same group that removed Narcissistic Personality Disorder from their list of mental disorders in what was most likely a political move to protect Obama? Of course when I pointed out that he should go talk about this study with Dr. Gosnell's "patients", I got no reply.

Interesting... I've found him

Submitted by dmntd1 on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 6:59pm.

Interesting... I've found him to be another Sun god. Regardless, I found this quote in the Jewish Encyclopedia:

The motive for these sacrifices is not far to seek. It is given in Micah vi. 7: "Shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?" In the midst of the disasters which were befalling the nation men felt that if the favor of Yhwh could be regained it was worth any price they could pay. Their Semitic kindred worshiped their gods with offerings of their children, and in their desperation the Israelites did the same. For some reason, perhaps because not all the priestly and prophetic circles approved of the movement, they made the offerings, not in the Temple, but at an altar or pyre called "Tapheth" (LXX.), erected in the valley of Hinnom (comp. W. R. Smith, "Rel. of Sem." 2d ed., p. 372). "Tapheth," also, was later pointed "Topheth," after the analogy of "bosheth." In connection with these extraordinary offerings the worshipers continued the regular Temple sacrifices to Yhwh (Ezek. xxiii. 39).

Going with Micah 6:7, although it doesn't explicitly state Molech, or his multitude of variations (Molek, Moloch, etc), I love how it readily explains the vast majority of abortions... the fruit of her body, for the sin of her soul.

We dare not tempt them with weakness. For only when our arms are sufficient beyond doubt can we be certain beyond doubt that they will never be employed.

It's disgusting how the media in this country are spinning this law.  It clearly states that a person needs to be under police scrutiny for a crime before the issue of illegal immigration is even brought up.  This scenario would never be allowed to happen in AZ and it's an insult to every police officer in that state to infer that it could.  How can a major US network get away with crap like this?  It's lies, total lies and the sheep go along with it.

Continuation of liberal...

Submitted by okiehawk44 on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 1:24pm.

Liberal (i.e. Democrat) dogma is that the offer of proof (not made for tv proof) in any one instance is proof of all instances offered by an opponent except when that proof (i.e. ACORN or Planned Parenthood undercover videos from multiple locations) is actually used against liberals (i.e. Democrats/liberals/leftists/progressives).

Half my immediate family lives in the Southwest and are Latino and support having a closed border and well regulated immigration policy.  To do otherwise is not only idiotic but dangerous and completely unfair to those who try to be good citizens many even before they are citizens.

BTW--any (ANY) person or business that knowingly -- that means not using E-Verify or even asking the most legal but simple pre-employment question like where were you born and what high school did you attend -- should be fined then jailed.  A person hiring a nanny can go on the internet and look at the public records. Will it identify all illegal aliens all the time? No, but it will net most and then our elected leaders in DC will actually have to interact with their children and mow their own estates or HIRE AN UNEMPLOYED AMERICAN CITIZEN.

Exactly

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 3:10pm.

The fist flaw in their scenario is that S1070 is not in effect, thanks to an injunction obtained by the US Department of Justice, so NO ONE can exercise its provisions whether they are legitimate law enforcement officers or not.

The other question regards ABC News and the "What Would You Do?" series.  Decades ago, CBS had a program called "Candid Camera," where they would stage just such outlandish incidents to capture the reactions of innocent bystanders on hidden cameras.  But Candid Camera was done for laughs.  ABC apparently wants to play Gotcha.

Frankly, the stings on ACORN and Planned Parenthood are much more professional, and that says a lot.

" security guard "

Submitted by sarge329 on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 1:37pm.

It's a well-known fact that security guards, or loss-prevention associates in reality, are not there to prevent people from coming in, or even checking IDs. Their sole purpose is to check to be sure that packages leaving stores are paid for. They cannot stop people from leaving the premises. If an individual is suspected of stealing, all they can do is ask them not to leave. If they do, they are to get a physical description of the suspect , their vehicle, and license plate number. I know of LP personnel who attempted to stop theft, and were rewarded for their efforts by being fired. Professor ( now AG ) Kobach has it right. In order for a LEO to detain someone, they have to have been stoppped for a legitimate ( traffic stop, random drug check, etc. ) reason. You simply can't stop someone as in a bad B-movie and say, " Papers, please " . This isn't the former Soviet Union. Not yet anyway. But then, I can see ABC making the attempt. After all, their primary function is entertainment based on fiction. And this whole thing sounds like a third-grade school play. So, based on its wild departure from reality, should we give it a grade of D for content and an E for effort, as transparent is it is?

What if ABC staged "Code Pink" activist calling for "revolution"

Submitted by Gary Hall on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 2:00pm.

What if ABC staged a "Code Pink/MoveOn.org/SEIU/NewBlackPanther/DailyKOS/laRaza" activist type sting calling for "revolution" in the streets of the US - like what's happening in Egypt right now - with the actor staging an activist calling for the overthrow of our government and our republic - our businesses?

I refer to the Common Cause/Code Pink/MoveOn.org progressive mob protest this past weekend, where one of the male activists was ranting:

Revolution now. Revolution now. What's happening now in Egypt. Same thing needs to happen here.

The actor could also cary a sign - w/credit to Bill Ayers (friend of O):

The essence of the SDS strategy is to build a white, para-military organization designed to carry our guerrilla warfare in the urban areas of America – they are totally committed to revolution (Principles Schminiciples – New Left Notes, Nov. 21, 1969 - page 16 of 71)

The typical reaction to such from average Americans would truely test the agenda of the average MSM reporter - don't ya think?

Ahhh... even using a "Security Guard" outfit may be illegal

Submitted by gopcongress on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 7:24pm.

In Arizona, security guards, or their employers, have to be licensed to work. So if someone even impersonates such an individual, that in itself may be construed as a violation.

Finally, if the purpose of wearing a security guard outfit is to frighten individuals and mistake them for REAL police or other law enforcement authorities, a case can probably be made against ABC and the actors that they are, indeed, impersonating police officers by inference. Such cases should be looked into.

Submitted by ROSIE RIGHT on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 8:14pm.

It's OK if You're a Liberal

Submitted by IrateNate on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 9:15pm.

OK, I'm a bit confused.  So what motivated this "white woman" to get involved?  It would appear she assumed this Hispanic man might not be here legally, and would possibly face separation from his family.  So she was willing to "help him escape the authorities" - all without any proof of this man's citizenship.

Was her assumption of imminent deportation solely based on his Hispanic appearance?  Whoa!  Hold the phone - I believe we call that "racial profiling", ma'am.

As in "You're racial profiling. You totally racial profiled!"

Didn't Juan Quinones pull something like this before?

Submitted by Dave. on Thu, 02/03/2011 - 9:24pm.

I tried to do a search of the archives and got no returns, but I seem to recall he was involved in a similarly idiotic stunt a year or two ago, and it prompted one of the NB contributors to post an article about it.

LOL - Or is my memory faulty?

Stopping the travesty of illegal immigration

Submitted by Brittanicus on Fri, 02/04/2011 - 3:44pm.

SAVE YOUR STATE NOW

The ACLU (American Communist Lawyers Union) is just part of the conspiracy to tame each State legislator, in threaten them with a court proceeding. But like all radical groups who see America as multinational country, multi-national language and the free flow of foreign workers with families is going to be overwhelmed by more and more States taking the same route of authoring bills to stop the invasion such as Arizona and New Mexico's Governor Susana Martinez. Whereas the prior Governor Bill Richardson had an open house for illegal aliens, to even issuing drivers licenses, the new Governor sees this as a bad move. As a start the lady has issued her own executive order, for law enforcement to question criminal foreign nationals. State Capitols finally realize the insane ideology of Liberal extremists is certain to bring their individual states to insolvency if not corrected, as with the Sanctuary State of California with a 26 billion dollar deficit. This nation can no longer serve the rest of the world by taking their destitute, their uneducated with an intermix of criminals. When we cannot even offer health care to our own, then why should we be an HMO to the planet? Why are we giving welfare to foreigners, who never paid into the fund? Why are we educating their children when they broke our sovereign laws to come here?  The ACLU might have intimidated small towns like Farmers Branch, TX, Hazleton, PA, but not individual states such as Georgia?

More than ever it makes sense to demand of our lawmakers to introduce--MANDATORY--E-Verify. If it was enforced nationwide there would be no excuse for every company to use it, big and small. No matter the size of the business, not matter who owns the company, every commercial enterprise should be held accountable if they are audited and found to have hired illegal workers. Every blog has shown that hundreds of thousands of companies, whether in construction, entertainment or the service industry or any other business have as many as 50 illegal aliens working. Yet countrywide millions of American citizens-legal residents are either trudging around looking for work or having to file for unemployment benefits. Any company that hires more than five illegal workers should be painfully fined, with no exemption from business asset confiscation and 6 months to five years in prison.

E-Verify would have been mandatory months ago, if Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) had not tried to table the enforcement tool, it could well have been a permanently installed as federal law required. E-Verify provide an automated link to federal databases to help employers determine employment eligibility of new hires and the validity of their Social Security numbers. All employers must first complete an I-9 form for every new hire, within three business days of the date the employee starts work. Employers may not begin the I-9 process until after the individual is hired. As yet it's not perfected, but now the program has included photo identification methods, to correct the fraudulent use of deceased, military and infant Social Security numbers.

The GAO (General Accounting Office) describes a nationwide Driver’s License pilot program that is planned to get underway in 2011. Now is the time for all US citizens and green card holders demand there States legislators allow the federal government to cross reference the SSA and DHS databases with  Department of Motor Vehicles. The open border groups and radical ethnocentric organizations have plotted against its use. The arch Liberals hidden within the ranks of moderate Democrats have used the media and left wing blogs to polarize it, but they are failing miserable as thousands more respectable business owners are access the simple process online.

With more than 16 million queries ran by more than 243,000 employers in fiscal year 2010, this much is certain: E-Verify is here to stay. Just as with any new innovation, eventually the E-Verify system will be have a success rate of identifying illegal workers an opening jobs for Americans and legal immigrants.
