After Linking Conservatives to Hateful Rhetoric, NBC Skips Dem Who Compared the GOP to Nazis

After spending close to two weeks bemoaning the state of political dialogue in America and wondering about its connection to the shooting of a Congresswoman, NBC has, thus far, completely ignored a Democratic Representative comparing the Republicans to Nazis and the Holocaust.

On Wednesday, Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen smeared, "They say it's a government takeover of health care. A big lie, like Goebbels...The Germans said enough about the Jews, and the people believed it and you had the Holocaust." Both ABC and CBS reported the story, but NBC skipped it on Wednesday's Nightly News and on Thursday's Today show.

Yet, on January 10, 2011, NBC's Andrea Mitchell warned, "While there is no evidence [Sarah Palin's] Web site featuring a target on Giffords' district had anything to do with this attack, some are asking if today's political rhetoric is inspiring the lunatic fringe?"

On Wednesday's Today, Today co-host Meredith Vieira hectored Glenn Beck: "I mean there are people who've criticized you and said...you're part of the problem in terms of anger...you've added to this dialogue of hatred."

In his speech, given on the floor of the House of Representatives, Representative Cohen compared the GOP position on health care to that of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. Considering the NBC's focus on the subject of hateful words, wouldn't this have been an important story to mention?

Over on ABC, Jon Karl discussed the remarks on the Wednesday World News and the Thursday Good Morning America. Co-host Robin Roberts chided, "It's never a sign of civility to compare your opponent's tactics to those of the Nazis. But that is exactly what one Democratic congressman did."

Karl then explained, "Last night, the Anti-Defamation League condemned Congressman Cohen's words. Saying, quote, that 'invoking the holocaust and the Nazi effort to exterminate the Jewish people is offensive and has no place in civil political discourse.'"

A CBS reporter referenced the comments on the Wednesday Evening News, but not Thursday's Early Show. Nancy Cordes observed, "A tentative agreement to tone down the rhetoric was shattered when one Democratic likened Republican claims about the law to Nazi propaganda."

A transcript of the January 20 GMA segment, which aired at 7:10am EST, follows:

ROBIN ROBERTS: Politics, as you know, was put on hold in Washington, in the aftermath of the Tucson shootings. But the new civility seems to be at an end. In the House, voting Wednesday to repeal the health care law and the debate, at times, was, really, not so civil. Jonathan Karl has more. He joins us from the Capitol this morning. Good morning, Jon.

JON KARL: Good morning, Robin. It's never a sign of civility to compare your opponent's tactics to those of the Nazis. But that is exactly what one Democratic congressman did. The Republicans hailed the vote, as a promise kept.

REP. MIKE PENCE (R-IN): Today, House Republicans are going to stand with the American people and vote to repeal their government takeover of health care, lock, stock and barrel.

KARL: Repeal will hit a brick wall in the Senate. But Republicans made it clear, they won't stop there.

REP. MICHELE BACHMANN (R-MN): We will not stop until we repeal a President and put a President in the position of the White House, who will repeal this bill. Until we repeal the current senate, and put in a Senate that will listen to the American people. And repeal this bill.

KARL: Their next plan of attack, starve health care reform of funding. For example, no money for IRS agents needed to implement the law's tax provisions. The debate was, for the most part, civil. But one Democratic Congressman accused Republicans of using Nazi-like tactics to make their case.

REP. STEVE COHEN (D-TN): They say it's a government takeover of health care. A big lie, like Goebbels. You say it enough. You repeat the lie. You repeat the lie. You repeat the lie. And eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That's the same kind of thing. The Germans said enough about the Jews, and the people believed it and you had the Holocaust.

KARL: Last night, the Anti-Defamation League condemned Congressman Cohen's words. Saying, quote, that "Invoking the holocaust and the Nazi effort to exterminate the Jewish people is offensive and has no place in civil political discourse." Robin?

ROBERTS: Jon, has the Congressman apologized at all?

KARL: Absolutely not. In fact, he is standing by his words. And says that he has no intentions of apologizing.

One case, but not the only one

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 12:40pm.

This, IMHO, was just the worst case (so far) of "heated political rhetoric" coming from the left, but by no means the only one that I feel was over-the-top. At least twice, dem congress-critters have invoked the US Constitution to support Obamacare. Rhetorical questions were asked on the floor about them (the congress-critter) and their children being denied insurance, and therefore dying. Last time I checked, NO ONE is denied life-saving medical in this nation, and I'm pretty sure a US congress-critter has some minimal (sarc) health coverage. This ridiculous harping about millions of people dying because they don't have insurance is getting old. But, like so many issues, the "progressives"  can't seem to help themselves. Side note: calling these morons "progressive" is like calling a 320 lb linebacker "Tiny"...

And of course, we also have King Harry flat-out refusing to let this come up for a vote in the senate. My, what big, brass gonads YOU have Harry...

Giant Leap to a Twisted Logic

Submitted by Boil It Down on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 12:47pm.

Cohen stinks of desperation when he rails against those who point out the obvious truth of the massive government control in Obamacare and call THEM liars.  The extreme comparison to the Nazis shows that he's sweatin' bullets about the loss of his union campaign money.  (oops...I said bullets)

Confused

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 1:34pm.

Why is it that when a conservative even mentions the word "nazi", the libs go bonkers. Yet the literally hundreds of instances of liberal protests, media diatribes, and politicians using the word against conservatives is ALWAYS given a pass? Do they really believe conservatives and moderates are that incredibly stupid? I understand they're used to their base (drooling, ignorant, spoon-fed libtards), but applying the same brush to those of different political persuasions seems kind of, what's the word? Stupid?

I see that the LA Times has skipped Cohen's Nazi comparisions..

Submitted by Gary Hall on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 1:16pm.

I see that the LA Times has skipped Cohen's Nazi comparisions, as well.  Well, unless it had something to do with the Memphis Grizzles and MLK Day events.  From the sports section:

Reed is perhaps best known for inspiring his New York Knicks to victory by starting Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals with a severe leg injury.

Several dignitaries attended the symposium, including U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., and Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley.

It does appear that the LAT's knows who he is.

Perhaps the LA Times has been too busy lately trying to make the case that Gifford's shooter was, "Suspect's ideas appear rooted in far right." (note: on-line edition headline is different from print)  as the print edition headline blared, using the radicaly left Southern Poverty Law Center as their primary crutch in pushing the theme. In addition they've been busy taking Palin down, blaming the atmosphere in AZ on numerous Repulbican issues, and fawning over the performance of Sheriff Dupnik.

LA Times readers will continue to believe that only Palin, Beck, Hannity, Rush, O'Reilly, and Coulter have ever been guilty of hate speech and assorted political rhetoric.

"Do they really believe

Submitted by amram on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 2:38pm.

"Do they really believe conservatives and moderates are that incredibly stupid?"

Cappmann1962, I won't address the portion of your quote that says "moderates", as I cannot recall anyone who said he was a moderate who did not turn out to be a liberal. But as for the rest, liberals do not believe conservatives to be stupid. But liberals do know that conservatives are dignified, moral, that they play by the rules of those who wear the white hats. The liberals spew their hateful venom, their outright lies, but the conservatives continue to speak the truth, and speak it in a rather genteel manner. Satan is the father of lies, and he draws liberals to him like a magnet.

Liberalism:

A philosophy that defends evil by any means. It rejects moral absolutes. It calls for total freedom in matters of immorality. It approves of the violent removal of opposition.

...he is standing by his

Submitted by Tom1969ca on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 4:33pm.

...he is standing by his words. And says that he has no intentions of apologizing.

Why would he apologize?  In a liberal's mind, there is nothing to apologize for in comparing Republicans to Nazis.  That's just a simple speaking of truth, right?

Now, if a conservative invokes the term "blood libel", or suggests that professional victims are frauds, or even so much as talks over a liberal, that's a completely different matter.  They must not only apologize, but they must also promise never to speak again...

Fact, the swatika is the original Communist flag.

The nazi salute and the swastika where the first socialist signs and logos in Russia

before nazi socialists adopted these too.

Russian passports and currency sported big swastikas on them,

proving that socialist, democrat, nazi and tyranny are all synonyms!!!

NBC View

Submitted by Jerry Mack on Thu, 01/20/2011 - 8:01pm.

NBC View: Cohen was just informing the less knowledgeable congress members of the propaganda used by the Nazis. Any other interpretation is wrong. He is a good Dimicrat and believes in civility at all times.
