Jon Stewart Rips Michelle Malkin, Fox News for Daring to Question Obama, Cheering at Rally
Jon Stewart on Thursday again jumped to the defense of Barack Obama, slamming those who questioned the cheering at Wednesday's memorial for the Arizona shooting. After playing a clip of Michelle Malkin complaining about the event, he derided the conservative: "You're not a primitive nematode, capable only of autonomic response to outside stimuli. You have a choice."
Trading jokes for straightforward insults, Stewart mocked, "You went to Oberlin." (Malkin attended Oberlin College.)
The liberal comedian expressed outrage over the fact that Brit Hume dared refer to the blessing, involving feathers and given by the University of Arizona's Carlos Gonzales, as "peculiar." Stewart mocked, "Yeah, yeah, I like my benediction like I like my coffee. Christian!"
[See Video below. MP3 audio here.]
Shifting into an impression of Hume, he continued, "I got to say, I also think the people of Arizona made a dire mistake afterwards eating sandwiches and a corn pancake instead of on a more American slice of bread."
The Comedy Central host even defended those who hooted and cheered throughout the service: "I have never been sadder and laughed harder in my life. And I got news for you guys, amen ain't that far from woohoo!"
This certainly seems to be a far different Stewart than the comic who bashed George W. Bush for almost everything. Remember, Stewart is often credited for speaking "truth to power."
A transcript of the January 14 segment, which aired at 11:01am EST, follows:
JON STEWART: It was a message not lost on the purveyors the of the next news cycle who across political lines roundly praised the President's speech for nearly two to three minutes before allowing politics, point scoring and pettiness to kick off the reunion tour.
CORNELL BELCHER (Democratic strategist): We saw Barack Obama at his finest.
UNIDENTIFIED: President Obama did a wonderful job.
MARC THIESSEN (Bush speechwriter): I thought that speech was particularly courageous.
MICHELLE MALKIN: You do have to question the timing of it.
STEWART: No, no, you don't have to. You're not a primitive nematode, capable only of autonomic response to outside stimuli. You have a choice. You went to Oberlin. Yes, once it had been established that the President successfully delivered a healthy infusion of support, inspiration and comfort to a community in dire need there was nothing left to do, but just really wonder about the seating arrangement.
BRIAN KILMEADE: I thought it was kinda strange that they didn't put the people that tackled, that tackled the shooter and knocked away Ms. Masch [sp?] why weren't they in the first two rows?
STEVE DOOCY: Absolutely. It would have been better if they had them in the front row.
STEWART: Yeah, yeah that would have made it much better. That would have made it a better show. But, you know, it's a memorial service, not the Emmys. Even the blessing, by Dr. Carlos Gonzales, a member of the U of A faculty and the Yaqui tribe came under scrutiny.
CARLOS GONZALES: Oh, creator, I have come to give a blessing.
KILMEADE: The Native American who opened up the show which I found very strange.
STEWART: It's not a show! He didn't open up a show! It's mourning with a U. You are confusing a morning show which you are on with a show of mourning which is what this is. Didn't you wonder why no one threw to commercial? Veteran journalist Brit Hume was even more perplexed.
HUME: Gonzales, who by the time it was over with, he had blessed, you know, the reptiles of the sea, prayed to the four doors of the building, and while I'm sure that's all, that's an honorable tradition with his people, it was most peculiar.
STEWART: Yeah, yeah, I like my benediction like I like my coffee. Christian! [Doing Brit Hume impression.] I got to say, I also think the people of Arizona made a dire mistake afterwards eating sandwiches and a corn pancake instead of on a more American slice of bread.
STEWART: but if there was one thing everyone agreed on it was that the memorial service audience. [bleeped] it up for everyone.
ALISYN CAMEROTA: The students at the University of Arizona didn't get the message. They thought they were at a pep rally.
CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER:: The audience, mostly students was reacting with cheers and yells in what was supposed to be, intended to be a very solemn memorial.
DAVID GERGEN: But, instead, it turned into much more of a pep rally.
UNIDENTIFIED MAN: You can either have a pep rally or a memorial service. You can't have both at the same time.
STEWART: Have you ever been to an Irish wake? I have never been sadder and laughed harder in my life. And I got news for you guys, amen ain't that far from woohoo!

but you just can't tell. Remember Clinton, laughing and joking out of the memorial for one of his cabinet, until on camera, and then the tear. Politicians will appear however they think will garner them the most votes.
What I found interesting was the t-shirts. Who is the mental midget that thought up the Marxist slogan for them, and put them on people? Why did people put them on? I would have told the organizers to "pound sand" if they handed me one to wear.
Again, Obama's White House is in over their head if they can't even preview a site where he is going to talk. Remember the Hoorah about the cross at Notre Dame? Looks like they are so desparate for photo-ops for Obama that they will take anything now. Damaged goods.

You may not have a problem with the medicine man Stewart, but did you ever figure that the families would have preferred to have someone of their own faith deliver the benediction? It would be the same as a Catholic priest giving the benediction at Jewish memorial service. Maybe that comparison will make it sink into that thick skull of yours.
You, Jon Stewart are at the point where you will defend the indefensible for only one reason...winning one over those you perceive as personal enemies. Notice I didn't say political opponents because your side has made this completely personal after this travisty in Tucson.

That was more a basket ball game, or a high school pep rally than a memorial. These idiot kids were not raised properly, to show respect when it is called for. That I lay at the parents feet. I'm Irish, and yes the "wakes" can be funny at times, but they are held OUTSIDE of the Church service. At the church service you would NEVER do what those morons did, and you conduct yourself accordingly. There is a time and place for the whoops and hollering, NOT at a memorial service.
EDIT: I'm surprised Zero didn't do any "shout outs". I was fully expecting those morons would break out with "Yes we can, yeas we can"......that was as big a circus I have ever seen.

is that the audience, the families, the city of Tuscon and most Americans apparently found the event to be positive and uplifting. This was a community that was shocked and hurting, and the reaction was cathartic.
And, frankly, it seems to me that most of the criticism--although unlikely to be acknowledged by the detractors--is rooted in an "Obama must fail" attitude.

Liberal supporters try every way possible to support Obama's speech but it didn't appear to be a "memorial" service. T-shirts were handed out, Obama was yelling in parts, applause, etc....not a somber or serious look to it. One big photo-op for the president. The police chief was sitting there looking smug yet he should be explaining how this well known disturbed person wasn't being monitored. Loughner was making statements and taking actions that should have been alarming. There should have been more said about getting help for disturbed individuals and being aware of dangers in public. The more the liberals focus on the "hate talk on radio", etc the more they will hurt their cause. Americans can see the problem was a disturbed person going unchecked.....not websites or talk that was anti-left.

Mr Stewart mistook comments made at funeral for a pep rally.
There's certainly nothing wrong with a few light moments at
something like this; but the crowd at this event was inappropriate.
And Mr Stewart criticism of Fox is misplaced. On Special Report
and O'rielly obama was given credit for good comments. It was the
crowd that Fox felt was at fault. And they were. At least during the
Presidents opening remarks when it was obvious that he meant it to

I just don't see why people think he is so sharp and funny. He gets off an amusing line here and there, but being on five days a week, the odds are with him. All of the lines quoted in this post just simply were not funny and him making a face after delivering them does nothing to change that.
I am certain that you already

I am certain that you already know the answer to your question. Jon Stewart is NOT sharp and NOT funny but he IS a liberal. Therefore, he gets a lot of special attention from everyone else in the MSM that is a liberal.
Case in point: Dennis Miller is very, very funny but HE is a conservative. The man is even a Christian and he liked Ronald Reagan!!! He will get no publicity whatsoever. Most people have never even heard of him.

I think political humor is funny only to those who agree. I can assure you that many liberals find Jon Stewart, Stephen Cobert, and Bill Maher to be hysterically funny. Dennis Miller gives us the creeps.
I've asked this before: Why are there not more conservative political satirists?
Why are there not more conservative political satirists?

Because we have Ann, Laura, and Mark. Others are not necessary

I'm guessing you mean Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, and Mark Levin. But do you consider them to be satirists?
Yeah, I agree with you about Rush.
Why the Medicine Man?

Two of the six people who were killed (we don't know anything about the others because the media were too fixated on blaming Sarah Palin) are Catholic and Gabby Jeffords is Jewish. Yet there was no Priest and no Rabbi. Instead we get a medicine man who had to spend several minutes cheerleading about his Mexican heritage. If even one of the victims had been muslim do you suppose we would have gotten the medicine man? The scriptures were read by government officials instead of clergy of any kind. Even if as the White House claims that Obama knew nothing about the rally atmosphere, he could have instantly put a stop to the inappropriate antics of the tee shirted crowd. What a pathetic and inappropriate display. I feel doubly sorry for the families of the victims.
Why would Obama want to stop it?

Those are HIS voters, wearing those t-shirts. He won't stop it this close to 2012, even if he does think it inappropriate. And I believe that Obama has a tin ear for the appropriateness of something like this.

"Yeah, yeah......that would have made it a better show. But, you know, it's a memorial service, not the Emmys."
Actually, Stuart, it was not a memorial service. It was, in fact, a media circus, meticulously planned, right down to the souvenir t-shirts, by the White House press monkeys to make Obama appear "presidential". Of course, as we've seen over the last two years, its going to take a lot more than cheers and applause from his cherry-picked audiences to make this buffoon look presidential.
