ABC's Jake Tapper Pokes Holes in Attempts to Blame Conservatives for Arizona Shooting

By Scott Whitlock | January 10, 2011 | 13:01

Good Morning America's Jake Tapper on Monday provided some balance to the numerous journalists who are attempting to blame the spree shooting in Arizona on Sarah Palin. The ABC journalist said of Jared Loughner, "The shooter's motives remain unclear. One acquaintance from 2007 described him as liberal."

Tapper discussed the "cross hairs" graphic created by Sarah Palin's Political Action Committee in 2010 (which targeted Democrats for political defeat). Unlike other journalists, however, he pointed out that the investigation into Loughner's interest into Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords "ties back to 2007, three years before Palin's map."

As the MRC's Brent Baker reported on Sunday, many network reporters attempted to make a connection between the shooting and Palin, the Tea Partiers and conservatives in general. ABC's graphic on Monday announced, "Politics of Vitriol: Is Rhetoric Getting Too Rough?" Additionally, Tapper played a clip of talk show host Joyce Kaufman asserting, "And if ballots don't work, bullets will."

However, he balanced that out by reading from conservative Glenn Reynolds, writing in Monday's Wall Street Journal. Tapper repeated, "He says, 'Those who purport to care about the health of our political community demonstrate precious little actual concern for America's political well being when they seize on any pretext, however flimsy, to call their political opponents accomplices to murder.'"

Additionally, when referring to Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik and his incendiary comments that this act of violence could be linked to those that would "inflame" with their political speech, Tapper made sure to identify him as an "elected Democrat."

A transcript of the January 10 segment, which aired at 7:45am EST, follows:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

ROBIN ROBERTS: This weekend's shooting and tragic shooting and assassination attempt of Representative Giffords has ignited a firestorm over the power of heated political rhetoric and whether it played some role in the violence. Jake Tapper much more on this.

ABC GRAPHIC: Politics of Vitriol: Is Rhetoric Getting Too Rough?

JAKE TAPPER: The sheriff in Tucson, an elected Democrat, immediately suggested that political rhetoric played a role in the massacre.

SHERIFF CLARENCE DUPNIK (Pima County, AZ Sheriff's Department): To try to inflame the public on a daily basis, 24 hours a day, seven days a week has impact on people.

TAPPER: And there is no shortage of examples of heated rhetoric.

JOYCE KAUFMAN (Florida talk show host): And if ballots don't work, bullets will.

TAPPER: But, exhibit A for many Democrats is Sarah Palin, who last spring targeted for defeat Giffords' district and 19 others with this imagery. One columnist says she has blood on her hands.

PALIN: Don't retreat, reload. And that is not a call for violence!

TAPPER: Giffords, for one, was not buying it.

GABRIELLE GIFFORDS (D-AZ): We're on Sarah Palin's targeted list. But, the thing is, that the way she has it depicted has the cross-hair of a gun sight over our district. And when people do that, they've got to realize there's consequences to that action.

TAPPER: There's no evidence that the shooter even heard of Sarah Palin. And Palin aide Rebecca Mansour in a podcast interview says the image was not violent.

REBECCA MANSOUR (Sarah PAC): We never, ever, ever intended it to be gun sights. It was simply cross-hairs like you'd see on maps.

TAPPER: The shooter's motives remain unclear. One acquaintance from 2007 described him as liberal. Democrats say, regardless, the rhetoric has to be civil.

REP. DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ (D-FL): You just never know what words are going to set off someone who is mentally unstable. And we have to be careful with our choice of words all the time.

TAPPER: But in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal today, Robin, conservative writer Glenn Reynolds calls this call this hypocrisy. He says, "Those who purport to care about the health of our political community demonstrate precious little actual concern for America's political well being when they seize on any pretext, however flimsy, to call their political opponents accomplices to murder." And, of course, Robin, we know from the investigation that the shooter's interest in Gabrielle Giffords, Congresswoman Giffords, ties back to 2007, three years before Palin's map. Back to you, Robin.

ROBERTS: And we also know that he did act alone.

Was George Stephanopoulis there for this bit of wisdom?  I absolutely LOVE that he quoted Glenn Reynolds from The Wall Street Journal.  I saw Stephy on the ABC Sunday show almost giddy thinking the newly elected Republican House would have to drop ALL their plans now for some reason.  Heh, Georgie.

Ignorance is Bliss

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 1:21pm.

There are many good arguments being put forth against this "Palin and conservatives are responsible for this shooting" rhetoric. But one MAJOR point that is getting very little publicity is why all of the sudden is Palin's target list so heinous? See paragraph 8 of the link: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/01/10/arizona-massacre-prompts-political-cheap-shots/ . Not only has the same graphic been used for years by both the right and the left, but in this example additional "inflammatory rhetoric" was used - "Targeting Strategy" and "Behind enemy lines" as if this were a military battlefield maneuver.

And I'm not saying "they did it so why can't Palin". I'm saying it (the graphic and term) are legitimate political tools. Congressional seats ARE targeted, and what other symbol would be used on a map for such a targeted seat? If the graphic was a set of cross-hairs on the person targeted, then it would be a problem.

Finally, if one example of this is to be condemned, ALL examples should be equally condemned.

however you have to admit, more comes from the right.

but the bigger question is: is it healthy for a society to seem so comfortable with so many violent and war-related metaphors?

as someone who does not live in the USA but is heavily influenced by american culture (who isn't. outside the US), i can attest that american's fixation with war, violence, guns and therefore aggression is not healthy and quite foreign in many places outside america.

make this event a time for everyone to reflect on these violent tendencies. the assassin was goaded by the worst rhetoric. and there is so much out there, so many references, (coupled with the ease in which someone can access such a deadly weapon - which furthers my point about america's violent tendencies) - it is a time to pause and reflect.

And I should remind you at the forefront of this Dem vs. Repub idealogical separation was the Red State, Blue State idea formed in the minds of our leftist media. America's fixation with war, violence, and guns?

Apparently you haven't gotten out much.  As I recall, we don't have teens walking the streets with AK-47's and RPG's.  We don't stone women for adultery or hold public hangings of homosexuals.  We don't engage in constant battles of ethnic cleansing or target religions for elimination.  You can walk down our streets without fear of tripping over a land mine or being car bombed at the local store.

You need to head to the nearest Universal Health Care provider in your country and demand a Windowdectomy so you can at least see the outside world while your head is shoved in your rear-end.

Please spare me the 'America is a violent society' crap. I don't know where you live, but to me, their is much more violence in the Middle East; Africa; Indonesia; China, need I go on?

You seem quite happy to accept America's music, clothes, and music; all borne out of freedom. You also seem quite accepting of the liberal American 'blame game' philosophy.

Limbaugh discussed this earlier today, and showed how it provides another example of (shock!)  lefty hypocrisy. When conservatives express concern about the bloody violence in movies and video games, fearing that it will influence people to commit violent acts, the lefties poo-poo it and defend it as harmless. "No, no, noooooo," they say. "People can understand that it's just fantasy." But they CAN'T understand that a target symbol on a map is just a metaphor? And a SYMBOL can incite violence, but slaughter shown graphically in movies can't?

Those "cross hair" symbols are survey symbols and if she had used dots or circles or whatever, she might have been accused of "painting target symbols" anyway.  She can't win with these liberals.  Hell, a liberal would look at a map and say "gee, looks like target areas."

A liberal's perception of things are WAY different than a normal person's perception of things.  Yeah, libs, you guys are NOT normal.  You keep proving time and time again how mentally deranged you guys get over certain things and time and time again when an incident occurs, it's one of YOU guys instead of a conservative.

It's stunning that the

Submitted by Cooltom on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 3:22pm.

It's stunning that the languange from the left reactting to the Arizona tragedy make the incoherent ramblings of a nutball almost seem more rational by comparision. Someone should collect the more Palin-deranged quotes, type them up using white text on a black background, and sumbit them to YouTube. Something like this:

Sarah Palin posted a graphic with Con. Giffords district in a crosshair.

Con. Giffords was shot by a gun.

Therefore Palin is responsible for the Tuscon shooting.

All accusations that link Palin in anyway to the shooting make as much sense as saying that J.D. Salinger caused the shooting of John Lennon, The Beatles are responsible for the Sharon Tate murders, and that the real villian in The Manchurian Candidate was the evil manufacturers of playing cards.

Boy, just when it appears

Submitted by Barack_must_go..... on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 4:19pm.

Boy, just when it appears Tapper has gone back over to the ' Dark Side ' ( no that's not a racist Obama reference ) , he surprses me by attempting another futile '  live ' pitch for a job on the " FOX NETWORK ".

He ( Jake ) better watch his back around Snufalufagus though, cause that little mean girl will scratch his eyes out, pinch and hit him over the back of the head with his purse, when he's not looking over this one.

IMMEDIATELY after this

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 4:47pm.

IMMEDIATELY after this accident happened the media, in unison, used it to denounce Sarah Palin and the Tea Party movement.  It almost seemed like they planned out a generic assault on those parties and kept it on the back burner until they could expolit some tragedy.  Now since the leftwing media no longer has 100% control over the flow of information, the entire assault seems to be coming apart.

Now comes the final part.  Now that the disparaged party has plenty of proof to clear their name the media and other Leftists will start crying for the end of the partisan bickering that THEY created.  Sorry Mr. and Ms. Latte Sipper.  You can't just accuse millions of people of being mindless blood-thirsty murderous savages and then demand the conversation go away because you have been proven to be liars.

I'm certain you didn't mean "accident"...

Submitted by ontheright on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 6:59pm.

...just wanted to make sure, however.

The tragedy itself was no more an accident than the MSM feeding frenzy that ensued.

Just my 2 cents.

However, a school chum of this sicko, named Parker, knew him in high school and in college.

Guess what,  he was a left wing liberal.

So what should we conclude?

There is no way to rationalize schizophrenia.

Submitted by drsamherman on Mon, 01/10/2011 - 8:28pm.

Schizophrenia is a complete departure from reality, hence the commonly used psychiatric term "dissociative" disorders as a group to describe the contortions that the patient experiences in terms of functional deficits.   Some of the defining characteristics of the dissociative diseases group are hallucinations involving one or more senses, inability to communicate with others ranging from lack of empathy to catatonia, and the uncontrolled emotional spectrum.  Paranoia is common among schizophrenics, but not always to the same degree.

What we sometimes term an overlay, meaning the presence of another debilitating mental illness, is common and may involve anything from a treatable mood disorder to an untreatable personality disorder or combination.
