Networks Thrill Over 'Awesome,' 'Amazing Atmosphere' of Clinton and Obama Press Conference
The network morning shows on Saturday thrilled over Bill Clinton's impromptu return to the White House. Commenting on the ex-President and Barack Obama's appearance on Friday to promote the tax bill compromise, Good Morning America's Dan Harris raved, "That was an awesome bit of political theater. An amazing atmosphere in the room, I have to imagine."
Reporter David Kerley saw Clinton's Q&A as a return to the 1990s and "the form that he showed in that White House briefing room when he was President." On NBC's Today, Mark Halperin touted Clinton holding court with reporters for 20 minutes (after Obama exited) as "great political theater."
Finding lessons for the current president, he enthused, "Bill Clinton figured out how to compromise, but still show people he was true to his principles and fighting hard for the middle class."
CBS's Early Show offered the most skepticism. Political analyst John Dickerson asserted that the ex-President is "quite popular and quite good at selling" the tax bill. But, he also joked, "Well, you imagine if the cleaning crew didn't have to come in, [Clinton] would still be there talking."
On Friday's newscasts, World News' Diane Sawyer appeared enthralled by the two Democrats. "A political double take," she announced. Evening News' Katie Couric hyperbolically described the event as an "unprecedented encore appearance."
Nightly News' Brian Williams ended a piece on Clinton and Obama by offering a note on socialist Senator Bernie Sanders' day long speech against the tax deal. Even though the spectacle wasn't technically a filibuster, Williams lauded, "At one end of town, two presidents in the same room. And at the other end, a genuine Mr. Smith Goes to Washington moment on Capitol Hill."
A transcript of the December 11 Good Morning America segment, which aired at 7:07am EST follows:
DAN HARRIS: And now to that fight over your taxes in Washington. President Obama brought out a very big gun yesterday to endorse the deal that he cut with Republicans, which has triggered a huge revolt within his own party. Bill Clinton was holding court in the White House briefing room yet again yesterday. Meanwhile, the liberal senator, Bernie Sanders from Vermont, literally spent the entire day blasting the bill in a prolonged filibuster on Capitol Hill. And Capitol Hill is where we find David Kerley this morning. David, good morning to you. Time is tight. They're running out of time. How do they get this thing done?
DAVID KERLEY: By doing some reading, Dan. In fact, Senators are waking up this morning with some reading material. They got, late yesterday, they got the actual text to this bill to cut taxes and reduce others. Now, the senators are expected to pass this bill despite all their grumbling over the last couple days. But in the House, it's a much different story. They are livid on the House side, the Democrats. They say they're not going to consider this bill. Well, President Clinton came to the White House in an effort with President Obama to try and silence those Democratic critics.
BILL CLINTON: The agreement taken as a whole is, I believe, the best bipartisan agreement we can reach to them largest numbers of Americans and maximize the chances that economic recovery will accelerate and create more jobs.
KERLEY: Former President Clinton also said this is really a stimulus bill. But he can't use that word, Dan. Stimulus right now is a dirty word in this town.
HARRIS: That was an awesome bit of political theater. An amazing atmosphere in the room, I have to imagine.
KERLEY: Yeah, it was remarkable to see the two of them walk in with very short notice. And then after President Clinton opened it up for questions, President Obama tried to extradite [sic] himself or get himself out of there, extricate himself as gracefully as he could.
BARACK OBAMA: I've been keeping the First Lady waiting for about a half hour, so I'm going to take off.
KERLEY: Mr. Clinton continued to take questions for another 20 minutes, Dan. It was a little bit of deja vu. Kind of the '90s with Mr. Clinton and, really, the form that he showed in that White House briefing room when he was President.
HARRIS: He seemed very happy to be there. Before I let you go, let me just ask you, I know they are livid over there on the House side, the Democrats but what are the odds that this thing this tax cut bill, what are the odds of this tax cut bill passing both the House and the Senate?
KERLEY: It looks like the Senate will pass it on Monday. And Democrats admit on the House side they've put themselves in a box, saying they wouldn't consider it. So, they're going to look to change it slightly, that they can get the Senate to agree on. A lot of work left, but not much time left.

These brown-nosers are WAAAAAAAY too late to spin this disaster!
Obama looked and sounded pussywhipped, Clinton was his usual blustering Bubba-self, and damage is done.
Obama is a wimp. He's done.
Agreed with above comment.

Agreed with above comment. This is major late to be spinning this disaster. And it was a PR disaster for Obama. Abandoning your own news conference to a previous president because you want to head off a temper tantrum by your wife over a Christmas party? And this while the nation's economy is in shambles, the deficit numbers coming out earlier that day are horrendous, two wars continue to burn - one with a record death toll, the Wikileaks scandal continues to worsen, and the Democrats (his own base) are filibustering the very topic the news conference was about?
Stupid JournOList media. You're so far into the tank for Obama you've grown gills.

My favorite part of that whole scene was when Clinton said to Obama: "Please go."
Yeah, that part

Yeah, what was that, a dismissal?
It couldn't have been something like "hey, I got this, take it easy." I thought it was more like "get along, doggie, don't need you here."

It punctuates the whole bizarre image of a President who appeared to be so disengaged from the politics of his office that he turned the matter over to the former President.
The MSM is still euphoric over the mere sight of their hero -- impeached former President Bill Clinton -- returning to save Obama and the Democratic Party, that it never crossed their minds that it appeared as though Obama was deferring to the old master.
To me, it appeared that Obama was publicly surrendering. He's appeared weary of the job for months now, and the way he left the Press Room to attend a holiday party just capped it off.

Yes, I think Clinton's choice of words spoke volumes, considering how many other ways he could have put it. I think it was clear that he really wanted Obama to GO!
And then when BHO made his exit, I was left with the impression of a junior executive who had been granted permission to leave work early to pursue something frivolous, because he wasn't essential to the important business anyway.

Hey Dan Harris, sorry Skippy, the TINGLE up and down your leg shtick was already copyrighted.
"I have to imagine" now someone explain to me how that is not simply vapid cheering instead of what this washed up in Mass POS should be doing like maybe REPORTING?
This was a weak disgrace for a SITTING president to give up the podium and leave someone else to explain YOUR TRILLION DOLLAR PLAN while you eat cookies and your wife eats FULL HAMS at a Christmas party.
Would that actually be holiday party oh fraud in chief?
On morning Schmoe they called this a brilliant move by Obama.
Sure, “W” bringing Daddy in and leaving midstream would have gotten the same reception............. YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME?
It is no longer a case of media bias; it is now strictly a working relationship.
This Clinton/Obama debacle
Submitted by celator on Mon, 12/13/2010 - 5:21pm.
This Clinton/Obama debacle will be described by historians as the beginning of the end of the Obama adminstration. In one fell, very public swoop, Obama's "I'm outta here" action solidified what many already believe about Obama: a lack of leadership, an insecure presence, clueless understanding of what is expected of a President, the wrong temperament for the job, someone else doing the heavy lifting, etc, etc, etc.
I was listening to a very left, black radio station last night on the internet. The host and callers were screaming about cutting out of the press conference to go to a Christmas party. "Where's his backbone? Why is he not willing to fight for what he believes? He's a traitor!" This from black callers. If he loses these folks, he's lost the whole thing.
Hasn't Clinton realized yet that he's no longer POTUS?

The goons in the media are too entranced by Clinton and Obama to realize how disgraceful this whole episode was. Bill Clinton is no longer POTUS. Putting himself in the position that he did amounted to acting as a presidential stand-in. If someone was going to "fill in" in this circumstance, it should have been the VP. I still recall Clinton's "long goodbye" on his last day. It was shameful. The man has no class at all. And Obama gets no points for allowing this situation to come down the way it did. Anyone who would believe the media spin on this is just plain twitterpated.

Clinton is trying to create a legacy that never was

The disgraced former President wants people to love him for being a great leader. His prolonged turn at the podium Friday was just like an old actor back in the klieglights, reprising a role that once defined him. But it's not t o save Obama; it's to create in the minds of Americans that he really was a Mt. Rushmore candidate.

I guess Obama never saw Clinton's ssllloooooww exit from DC in 2001. Otherwise he never would have left Clinton at the podium while he went to a party. Can anyone confirm whether or not Clinton is still there at the podium?

Clinton no doubt has essentially the same agenda as the Comrade Chairman, but at least he knows when to stop pushing it.
Obama has appeared to me as about 2" tall since he came to power. When I saw him turn on his heels and exit that presser, he shrank to 2 mm.
And the MSM can spin this for all they are worth, but they can't cover up the fact that this was a total disaster for Obama. Why his handlers let Clinton anywhere near that press room is beyond me.
