Barbara Walters Slams 'Uninformed' Sarah Palin: Many Find the Idea of You as President 'Scary'

By Scott Whitlock | December 09, 2010 | 12:02

Barbara Walters dismissed Sarah Palin as "uninformed" on Thursday, telling the former Republican governor, "...Many people find the thought of you as president a little scary."

The View co-host appeared on Good Morning America to promote her upcoming 10 Most Fascinating People special. She derided Palin, "You hear, 'Oh, she's very charming, but she's uninformed.'" [MP3 audio here.]

Video below the jump.

Previewing the program with GMA co-anchor Robin Roberts, Walters explained how she retrieved a famous question from Katie Couric: "And you know, the Katie Couric question that caused her so much trouble? What do you read?...I gave her another chance."

In the clip of the special, Walters condescendingly reworded the critique: "Would you like to tell us what newspapers, magazines or books you are reading right now?"

One might remember that in 1981, Walters famously asked Katharine Hepburn this deeply thoughtful question:  "What kind of a tree are you?"

The full interview airs at 10pm on December 9.

A transcript of the excerpt can be found below:

[Preview of her Fascinating People special]

BARBARA WALTERS: And Sarah Palin, for the third year, we have had Sarah Palin. Because every year, she does something fascinating. And you know, the Katie Couric question that caused her so much trouble? What do you read?

ROBIN ROBERTS: Sure.

WALTERS: Okay. I gave her another chance. And here's the answer. [Cut to interviw] Well, you know, governor, many people find the thought of you as president a little scary. You hear, 'Oh, she's very charming, but she's uninformed.' Would you like to tell us what newspapers, magazines or books you are reading right now?

SARAH PALIN: I read a lot of C.S. Lewis when I want some divine inspiration. I read Newsmax and Wall Street Journal. I read all of our local papers, of course, in Alaska because that's where my heart is. I read anything and everything that I can get my hands on, as I have since I was a little girl. And that's one of those things, Barbara, where that issue that I don't read or I'm not informed, it's one of those questions where I like to turn that around and ask the reporters, why would it be that there is that perception that I don't read?

WALTERS: So, there.

ROBERTS: And everyone, of course-

WALTERS: So, she does.

ROBERTS: And always, people want to know if you think she's going to run for president.

WALTERS: Her husband joined us, by the way. He wants her to run for president. The day she says I'm not running, you know, the curiosity goes.

ROBERTS: That's true.

WALTERS: So, she's very close to throwing her hat in the ring. She doesn't say no. She doesn't say yes. She says almost.

ROBERTS: Keeps her in power like that.

WALTERS: Keeps her in power.

Let's put two threads together

Submitted by KC Mulville on Thu, 12/09/2010 - 12:19pm.

  1. Over the last couple days, we've seen the Lawrence O'Donnell thread where he basically shows up a number of liberals, several who are journalists, for their ignorance of tax laws.
  2. Now we see a journalist relay the challenge that Sarah Palin has to prove that she's "informed" by telling us what media reporting she reads.

I reject the notion that feeding at the trough of the media's slop constitutes being "informed." They don't understand what they're reporting, so the notion that reading the media will give you a proper understanding of current issues is simply nonsense.

The media, of course, make their money selling the fiction that their reporting increases knowledge. But information isn't knowledge.

And therein lies the crucial difference: being informed by this media doesn't make one knowledgeable. Put another way, the media doesn't deliver knowledge ... they deliver mere information. That  information might be genuine knowledge, but a large percentage of it isn't. Much of what the media puts out is merely the "buzz" of reaction to a very small assembly of facts.

Good grief, what does the president read?

Submitted by StarAZ on Thu, 12/09/2010 - 12:24pm.

He tried to tell people during the campaign that he curled up with Niebuhr and other arcane philosophers and so-called intellects. Then he carried Franzen's book FREEDOM around on some vacay--that book was vapid in the extreme. If he read it, I am ashamed a president did not have better things to do like read a briefing or something.. I guess he reads biographies--or does he...most presidents do because they want to see how they measure up, not how to avoid the mistakes others made.

Most Americans don't read much of anything, including newspapers. Tweets--pretty much it.

What does Babs read? Katie? Are they slamming with Milton Friedman, The Atlantic, New Yorker, etc. ?

Hey, Barbara--Notice the pecking order--you are asking HER the questions. You are trying to increase your ratings with HER. Not the other way around.

If the MSM had as much

Submitted by MidAmerica on Thu, 12/09/2010 - 12:32pm.

If the MSM had as much power and influence as we fear would the Republicans have gained all that they did in November?

Even back in the days of total airwave dominence by the MSM the people still were more likely to vote for a Republican for President because the candidates the dems put up didn't connect with average Americans.

Sarah could win the 2012 election if the Republicans are united behind her.  But as we saw in the last election she was shot in the back by friendly fire because she didn't have the correct pedigree or allegiances to the right people.

We have to keep an eye on the so-called insiders who are willing to thwart the will of the primary voters so they can get in their guy in order to keep their power and influence.  When we see prominent Republicans taking shots at Palin that's what they are doing.

The MSM Retains Significant Power to Influence the Public

Submitted by Smartypants on Thu, 12/09/2010 - 3:08pm.

Despite the mitigating effect of the alternate media, the msm still retains significant power.  It was, after all, the msm which helped seal Obama's victory in 2008.  Much of the power of the media resides in what they choose to not tell us.  Had the msm performed its job in 2008, B.O. would have been properly discredited as a presidential candidate, because he was not, and is not, fit to the the leader of the free world.  The press chose to ignore his shady and inexperienced background and foisted him on us as a savior, someone who would change the world for the better.  Meanwhile, the media eviscerated the McCain/Palin ticket.

There are millions of Americans who rely on their nightly news and rags like the NY Times, Wash Post, etc. for their information; these people still believe most of what they hear and read, many of them are even politically conservative, but the medis still holds a lot of power over what they think.

Submitted by MidAmerica on Thu, 12/09/2010 - 3:49pm.

Yes they have influence, but only influence.

A better Republican candidate and a unified Republican Party could have beaten BO.  Many Republicans were caught up in the historic thing.

People do not vote according to the evening news.  They vote according to their personal circumstances.

Right now all the Republicans have to do is field a decent candidate and that candiate wins even if the evening news evicerates that person every night.

Do you think Nixon (twice), Reagan (twice), Bush I, Bush II (twice) were elected because the MSM didn't oppose them?

Submitted by TheHistorian on Thu, 12/09/2010 - 12:35pm.

Is dumber than a box of rocks.  She has spewed as many ignorant Democrat talking points as Olbermann and Matthews.  For example, look at her Thanksgiving interview with President and Mrs. Great One.

The stupid repeated question about "dark meat vs. white meat" when they said they liked a little of both.

Her swallowing Obama's lie that Presidents always lose Congress in mid-term elections

Her swallowing the lie on "taxing the rich"  that Obama was still spewing at Thanksgiving.  In fact, she keeps pushing for "taxing the rich more" in the interview.

So, her comments on Palin don't particularly bother me.  Sarah needs to find an honest interviewer in the MSM if she doesn't want to be constantly stabbed in the back like she was by Katie Couric.  So far, I haven't seen one.

Um....no, Babwah - the 'curiosity' hasn't 'gone' since you idiots first sniffed her scent back in 2007. In what form were those "challenges"?  Further, allowing you your point, where did these "challenges" go when it was a Democrat (Obama) against a Republican (McCain).  In the big stage of the nationwide debates, when more are watching, there were no questions made about Obama's past and present relationships and questionable dealings.  Meanwhile, Palins was being grilled about what she does and doesn't read and had a pack of journalists dispatched to her Alaskan home for no other purpose than to dig up dirt on her.  Had this same effort been made for Obama, what would they have found?

Yeah, I agree that the media didn't treat Palin fairly.  But I also think that the McCain campaign inadvertently sabotaged her.  They kept her under wraps, and let her out for only a few interviews.  That gave the impression that McCain had no faith in her, and it magnified the  significance of each negative sound-bite.  She has a great TV personality, and should have been flooding the airwaves.

Man of a thousand usernames, using the word credibility in a snarky  post about Sarah Palin?

Married or not, PDS makes you come across as a metrosexual moron.

Like I said, this woman makes you people piss yourselves, and the best you liberals can do, nicely,  is to turn into a Rachel Maddow snark machine; and then when the PDS really starts eating away at your sanity, you get nastier than Perez Hilton on a flaming flamers rant.

The cap Sharpie moment?  You are really reaching.

Gazillionaire?  Supreme jealousy.

What politician ever had ALL the answers to ALL the questions?  You are being either whiny, or downright stupid.

Respect is successfully earned, not successfully demanded.

I am quite sure Sarah Palin could not care less about having a piss-ant liberals respect.

Has credibility in my mind because she turns liberals and Democrats into the whiniest, snarkiest, nastiest sonsabitches on the face of planet Earth.

Who you trying to kid, you pusillanimous popinjay?

You think I am naive enough to believe anything "credible" in my point of view about Sarah Palin is going to bring paeans of praise from your liberal lips?

What crap.

A liberal with PDS asking someone, who respects Sarah Palin for who she is and what she has accomplished, about what she has done to gain credibility,  knowing full well nothing offered will suffice in the liberal mind, is playing a fools game.

There have been a number of long posts at NBs listing Palins accomplishments, in Alaska, alone, and I know full well you have read them.

If you choose to disbelieve or discredit anything viable or complimentary that is said about the woman, that is your right, and your problem.

Don't try that idiotic, simple-minded bullshit phrase "Can you answer it?" , and walk away thinking you have won some great debate because the answer doesn't fit comfortably within your liberal parameters.

The answers reference Sarah Palin's credibility have been all over these threads the whole time I have been a member.

As have been the mightily asinine questions, statements, remarks, and pitiful drooling epithets laid on Palin by your slimy liberal ilk.

Only a stooge would hide behind a stupid ass question like yours.

If you didn't strive so hard to come across as a liberal dork, you could appreciate the fact that there is a worthless poseur in the Oval Office, and comparing what he has and has not done, even alongside Palin's fairly minimal political record is most certainly enough to to convince me she could do a better job than the Messiah.

Why don't you romanticize Palin the same way as Obama?  Her looks dwarf his.

Or is there more to your "concerns" about the acceptance of homosexuals by society than you are letting on?

I don't carry the requisite white guilt necessary to obtain a liberal guild card, so it is not inherent in my nature to cast about for a melanin-enhanced individual to fill a particular position just because it is the politically correct thing to do.

Aside from the fact that Ms. Rice is an intelligent, accomplished, and attractive lady, you once again show your stupidity.

If an inexperienced, lying, dung-heap escapee pos like Obama can reach the top job, you show your idiocy by asking what makes Palin, a decent person, worthy of the presidency.

The controversy is MSM bias

Submitted by JakeMo on Thu, 12/09/2010 - 4:52pm.

Satch, it's the "some say" routine from Walters that gets old. It's a common MSM tactic that we've come to understand is really just code for "my liberal friends all agree."

Walters' use of "many people" is deliberately conflating two groups and pretending they both oppose Palin for the same reason (thus creating an illusion of popular consensus that doesn't exist). Liberals oppose her because she holds conservative views. They are unconvinceable. Establishment Republicans oppose her because they believe she's unelectable. Both are "scared" but for different reasons.

When Walters poses her question, she's not trying to draw forth information that will convince the establishment Republicans or even independents. She's trying to build on the theme that Palin is unelectable by repeating the left-wing meme that she's "scary" and uninformed.

This is not unique to Palin. This routine will be repeated over and over with every conservative that throws a hat in the ring. The MSM's goal is to perpetuate a myth that conservatives are stupid and unelectable.

It's that "bias" that folks here at NB find objectionable.

Tired Theme

Submitted by Smartypants on Thu, 12/09/2010 - 3:27pm.

Republicans are never qualified for office, according to the liberal media.  This has been the case as long as I've been alive and paying attention.  Ronald Reagan was not qualified, HW Bush was not qualified; GW Bush was not qualified.  Yet, a one-quarter term Senator from Illinois with a bunch of thugs and questionable characters as friends and role models is qualified.

When a Republican, such as Palin, is questioned by member of the msm, he or she is almost always put on immediate defense with accusatory questions.  You rarely see this line of questioning of Democrats, unless they have done something to really anger the press--and, in these instances, the critical questions will generally be made from the left perspective (i.e., questioning Obama for "caving" to Republicans in tax policy).  This is not objectivity; it is pure ideological nonsense, and anyone who defends this behavior is either stubbornly naive or partisan themselves.

What you're experiencing is what all conservatives experience as they view the media.  I started making note of this when I was pretty young.  They regularly blast any conservative politician, pundit, writer, you name it, as being some kind of outrageous extremist.  When you actually listen to the person firsthand, invariably, this extremism is absent.  Listen to Rush Limaugh for a while, then listen to how the media portrays Rush Limbaugh.  It is as if there are two different people: the media created Limbaugh and the real Limbaugh.  Of course, Rush loves the publicity.  When we talk about politicians, the problem is more dangerous.  Republicans are regularly discredited on very little evidence while Democrats can  be open racists, homophobes, anti-American dingbats and survive just fine.  As evidence of this:  Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House; and they crucified Bush for being a dolt?  I'd be GW Bush's IQ doubles that of Nancy Pelosi.

Have you ever seen someone write a post with wrong information?  Haven't you personally busted me in the past making statements you knew I knew were wrong?  We make mistakes.  The president knows how many states we have.  Palin knows who we're allies with.  They both made mistakes, now if we could just move on.

I really don't think the point is who made the biggest gaffe; that is an endless loop of idiocy to argue.  The point is there is a distinct difference in how a conservative is treated by the media and how a liberal is treated.  Perhaps if Obama were painted into a corner by the press as much as Palin, he too would make even more gaffes; in reality, he is generally fairly coddled, particularly when he was still running for the presidency.  Contrast this with how GW Bush was treated.  Let's have the media treat Obama the way they treated Bush and see how B.O. handles it.

Saying there are 57 states and not correcting yourself is pretty incriminating.  Nobody makes this mistake, nobody.  How early do we learn how many states there are?  It is ingrained in all of us like the alphabet.  This is not just a slip of the tongue, the guy is not as bright as has been presented.  He called his own grandmother a "typical white person" and said this directly to the media.  How dumb does someone have to be to say something like that?  I'm not even calling him a racist, mind you, just a lot less intelligent than has been stated.

Like MM said below, it was a blanket statement. Like BW is the arbiter on what makes someone informed. Funny thing is everyday she sits right next to probably THE most uninformed idiot in all of media... Behar.

But I suppose it would have been worse if she said Palin is "mentally challenged", but it's pretty much the same thing.

Again I agree Palin is not treated fairly and even flamed by some so called jounalists Ok for example when SickofLibs put "Shawn is uninformed" in the subject line to prove his point. If a poster actually told me I was uninformed, I might be slightly offended. However if he said Shawn some posters think you are uninformed and lack a moral compass and don't defend your points, and ask me what I would say to those people. I would not be offended at all, and would love to have an opportunity to tell the truth about my critics. Sorry MM, the rest of the interview might turn out to be a hit job, but the teaser they gave us is not a cheap shot at all

Submitted by yutsnark on Tue, 12/14/2010 - 9:37am.

Actually, I'm not suggesting she lie at all.  When a politician is asked a question like, "What do you read," that's a gift.  Presumably, she reads all sorts of stuff, and she can pick what she wants to emphasize.  She chose to emphasize her interest in religion, local events, and conservative values.

But yes, I am implying that she might want to "look good to people who don't like her anyway."  That would increase her chances of getting elected, I'd think.  But maybe I'm wrong.  After all, she's got along pretty well without my advice so far.

I fault Palin for going on this show. Only because a woman like Barbra Walters, who's been a media whore her whole life-so much so she should be outside the holland tunnel wearing fishnet stockings-is a totally irrelevant and represents everything that's wrong with old media.

however, this "what do you read" bullshit has gotten a little out of control.  Go read her book. And if you want to tell me that she ghost wrote the book, I'll tell you that most politicians who write books dont write them at all, ie: GW Bush or Hillary Clinton. And even if Sarah Palin did have a ghost writer--I can assure you it wasn't someone like Bill Ayers.

But go read her book.  Also, if you want to continue to push the idea that she can't or doesn't read, I'll ask you this:

Do you really believe that a woman who grew up in a house run by TEACHERS can't read or doesn't read???

Too bad, Barbara WaWa didn't follow up on the Newsmax mention by Gov. Palin. One might have expected her to attack Palin over the conservative leaning news group. Perhaps Walters was aware that Bill Clinton had recently visited Newsmax's offices and spoke highly of the folks there. She certainly wouldn't want that out there for her audience to go check out.

"Right now? Well, Barbara, right now I'm sitting in on an interview with you and as you can see, there are no books, newspapers, or magazines on my lap at the moment. However, if you're asking about what I read in my spare time, I would say that first, I don't subscribe newspapers or magazines in print since that information is available in nearly the same format online. Would you like me to list the six or eight news-related websites I browsed in the last day or so? As for books, well, I'm here promoting my new book, so I haven't had a whole lot of time to sit down and cozy up to a new novel lately. The last one I read was __________.

"But to your point about being un-, or under-informed: I would absolutely agree with you. Like right now I have no idea what the temperature is in Tokyo? Do you? I also don't know what that cameraman over there is doing for dinner tonight. Do you? I'd love to know if the NFL will play football next year, but the principles in that negotiation aren't keeping me informed on their progress. Are they, you? See, we're all uninformed about some things, and what you just asked was a snarky question based on a broad and unquantified bar, that all I can do is be honest and say, 'I guess so.' And, since you couldn't answer any of my questions, I'll have to assume you're equally uninformed? Scary, isn't it?"
