ABC's Claire Shipman Swoons Over 'American Icon' Michelle Obama, Compares Her to Jackie Kennedy

By Scott Whitlock | November 10, 2010 | 12:18

According to Good Morning America, Michelle Obama is the second coming of Jackie Kennedy. Co-host Robin Roberts enthused on Wednesday, "...First Lady Michelle Obama is drawing comparisons to the first first lady of fashion diplomacy. That, of course, being Jackie Kennedy." An ABC graphic lauded the "American icon."

Correspondent Claire Shipman highlighted Michelle Obama's trip to India with her husband and hyped, "It's a charm and style offensive that has all of us reaching for that inevitable comparison. India just as besotted by this glamorous First Lady as it was by that ultimate style icon Jackie Kennedy, almost half a century ago."

Shipman has been reporting on the Obamas since 2007 and has made little attempt to hide her enthusiasm. On January 18, 2007, she rhapsodized about the "fluid poetry" of Barack Obama. On May 6, 2008, she gushed, "...I think it says it all that [Michelle Obama's] Secret Service code name is renaissance."

On October 31, 2008, the journalist wondered how Michelle Obama deals with her husband being "lusted after by all of these women out there" on the campaign trail.

On Wednesday, Shipman narrated as though she were at a fashion show: "From the moment Michelle Obama arrived in a classic gray sheathe with pearl buttons, a nod to a traditional Indian tunic, she's turned the fashion wattage up daily."

She added, "But, while her oh-so-divine predecessor captured hearts with her sheer perfection, Michelle Obama gives the role a thoroughly modern, approachable twist.

A transcript of the November 10 segment, which aired at 8:01am EST, follows:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

ROBIN ROBERTS: But, coming up right now, as the Obamas make their way through a whirlwind overseas trip, First Lady Michelle Obama is drawing comparisons to the first first lady of fashion diplomacy. That, of course, being Jackie Kennedy. [Onscreen: side by side photo of Jackie Kennedy and Michelle Obama.] Here's Claire Shipman with more on that. Good morning, Claire?

ABC GRAPHIC: American Icon: First Lady's Fashion Play: Michelle Obama Up Close

CLAIRE SHIPMAN: Good morning, Robin. Well, As President John Kennedy so famously quipped about his own life on a trip to France, I'm sure it won't be long before Barack Obama realizes that he's just the man who accompanied Michelle Obama to South Asia. It's a charm and style offensive that has all of us reaching for that inevitable comparison. India just as besotted by this glamorous First Lady as it was by that ultimate style icon Jackie Kennedy, almost half a century ago. "Dancing queen rocks India," proclaimed the local papers. And "Michelle steals Barack's thunder." From the moment Michelle Obama arrived in a classic gray sheathe with pearl buttons, a nod to a traditional Indian tunic, she's turned the fashion wattage up daily.

MARY TOMER (Founder/contributing editor, Mrs-o-.org): She has been very respectful to the host country and their fashion tradition.

NEWSREEL FOOTAGE OF JACKIE KENNEDY: The First Lady's visit has been a personal triumph.

SHIPMAN: But, while her oh-so-divine predecessor captured hearts with her sheer perfection, Michelle Obama gives the role a thoroughly modern, approachable twist. Hop scotching in J. Crew with delighted kids of Mumbai. Happily busting a move to the magnetic sounds of Bollywood, later cajoling her husband to join. And she wowed everybody with her stunning version of traditional dress for the India state dinner. A very American interpretation of a sari. As she moved to Indonesia, Tuesday, she added trousers to her wardrobe, an acknowledgment of the more conservative culture in the country. The only note of controversy, one minister who doesn't believe in shaking hands with females outside of his family later e-mailed his followers saying Mrs. Obama reached out first. But in this video, he seems to be eagerly reaching out towards her, just as smitten as the rest of the world. Now, as the President continues his trip in South Korea, Mrs. Obama's on her way home. And I'm sure, Robin, he's wishing about now he wasn't losing such a valuable, headline-grabbing asset on his trip.

ROBERTS: And thinking on that lean-in, it was about a tie with the hand shake. It was tough to see who was going for the hand shake.

SHIPMAN: I guess so. I guess so. But it didn't look like he was telling the truth to me.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: He's been getting a lot of heat on Twitter.

ROBERTS: He is getting a lot of heat. That's right, George. And, George, you can appreciate that the president can't bust really a move like his other half. You like a guy who can't dance.

STEPHANOPOULOS: He doesn't even try that hard.

Preposterous! Michelle is not, by any streach of the imagination, even close to Jackie Kennedy. Jackie had poise and class and style. Michelle has none of that. She has no class, no poise and style is a lost cause with her. Jackie had diginity. Michelle reeks of getto.

How interesting

Submitted by CobraMan on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 2:11pm.

How interesting, you seem to object to the implied racism of a "ghetto" remark (not everyone who lives in ghettos are black, you know), but don't seem to have any complaints when Michelle is constantly being compared to a famous WHITE WOMAN! Doesn't that comparison alone reek of racism?  You can't tell me that there's no famous Black women (Opra comes to mind) that could be used as a comparison, especially when it comes to fashion sense.

Bassndude,

I'm glad that we clarified that you weren't at all referring to her race in a derogatory way.

Sorry if I took the comment the wrong way.

What did you mean by she "reeks of getto"? Did you mean that she reminds you of impoverished people? Or dilapidated buildings?

There are certainly white people who live in ghettos. In fact, I would venture to guess that someone, or at least a few people, of every race or color lives in a ghetto somewhere.

I can't decide what is the most insulting-to-America's-intelligence comment of all these nauseating statements. "Bust a move"?? Are we now so besotted by ghetto culture that we all go around talking like gangsta rappers? Showing off bling and name-dropping designer names? All it takes is a visit to an inner-city school to see how that trash has destroyed a generation of black kids, with poor whites close behind. And talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations -- MO is praised extravagantly for dancing barefoot, but Sarah Palin is a redneck?

Michelle can come out dressed like this and still be declared a fashion icon!

The howler of it is that the writer said it "highlights her small waist nicely."   And let us not forget this....   Oh, and this....   Here is what I posted in another thread on this very subject:     It seems like they just decided early on that she has to be "Jackie O,"

And she liked the idea too.   And check out the hair too!  Here's Jackie Kennedy   OK, so now I'm on a rant about MO!   But you started it!!   Remember Peggy Noonan's paean to her arms???   She has come under attack for exposing her arms. They are toned and muscular, burnished and beautiful. That has to be threatening to some.   Good everlovin' grief!!   Does Noonan know what "burnished" means?   Did she think MO oils her arms like a bodybuilder to give them sheen?   No, Ms. Noonan, people are not "threatened" by her showing her arms.  We're just laughing at her exhibitionism.

Here we go again with the Jackie Kennedy comparisons...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 1:03pm.

Everytime the MSM seems to feel that MO needs a boost, they haul out the 'ol "Let's compare her to Jackie Kennedy" garbage...Now, while I wasn't the biggest fan of Jackie Kennedy, I have to say that the lady did know fashion. Jackie Kennedy had flawless taste in fashion, and to compare MO to her, in ANY way, is almost obscene.

To be fair to MO, she is very tall, has long arms, tends to hunch her shoulders (which drives me nuts!) and has a rather generous backside. She obviously has no control over most of these areas...This is the way God made her. But, these body "issues" can present a challenge to what she wears, and from what I've seen over the past several years, MO rarely does herself any favors when it comes to how she dresses. She needs to stop wearing those sheath-type dresses which just call attention to her derierre, and she also needs to stop wearing the big, floral prints that she seems to be very fond of. I also wish someone would tell her to stop wearing her hair so short, and to not put it up into the bun that she sometimes wears. MO has a big underbite which gives her a very prominent lower jawline, and wearing her hair short at the jawline, just accentuates that. She looks best when her hair is longer, like back at the time of the Democratic National Convention in '08. The way she wore her hair then looked quite good on her...Softer, less austere and more feminine. One would think that 2 years into her time as first lady, that she would have made some corrections to her "style" but as yet, I haven't seen any.

True, but they are hardly an unbiased audience...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 1:17pm.

You're right...She could wear a burlap sack, and the MSM would hail it as haute couture! However, based on what I've seen written and heard said about what MO wears, from "average" Americans (as well as others overseas as well), her "style" could use correcting and tweaking.   Worrying about what the first lady wears is all rather trivial and generally inconsequential in the big scheme of things, but, like it or not, it does factor into her overall image, much in the same way as did Obama's horrendously poor choice of a set of DVD's as a gift for Queen Elizabeth, factor into his. That little epidsode made him appear to be a classless, clueless dolt, which he of course is.

Perhaps Michelle O can follow in Jackie O's footsteps

Submitted by Gary Hall on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 1:30pm.

Well then, perhaps Michelle O can follow in Jackie O's footsteps. Michelle already has corporate experience under here belt - once serving on the Board of Directors for Tree House Foods (while, at the same time, making a small fortune at that Chicago Hospital in her "Community Reach Out" executive position).  If and when.. she could perhaps marry big... like with someone like..

Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Sokratis Onassis, or Jackie's late life companion Maurice Tempelsman, Lazare Kaplan Chairman , who in 1998 was reported to be developing a romantic relationship with Secretary of State Albright, a man former leftist US Representative Cynthia McKinney charged was deeply involved in Africa's horrific "conflict diamond's" (Blood Diamonds) business.

That way the national MSM could continue their life blood's work of treating her like an angel in Camelot, instead of smearing her for hanging out with all those people and industries that they claim to despise so much - just as they continue to do w/ Jackie O.

Fashion Statements

Submitted by CobraMan on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 1:40pm.

It's interesting in how hard these people are trying to kindle some type "historic legacy" for  Michelle.  They have nothing of consequence , no actions by her of any real importance, in which to invoke the admiration of others, so they try, in vain, to equate her with other famous people, and they do so by one single venue: her fashion sense!  They claim, time and time again, that Michelle is as fashionable as Jackie O, but that it!

She's being compared to the least notable aspect of someone famous. Now that's down right insulting.

The wife of the vp is pretty inconsequential...

Submitted by PrairieSky on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 1:42pm.

Historically, most people don't pay much attention to vp's wife, for good or bad, unless she says or does something really great or really stupid, or, if the MSM doesn't like her, as was the case with Marilyn Qualye. The press didn't like her, and they especially didn't like her husband, and so she was a target from time to time.

  1. Oh yeah, I remember clearly when Jackie Kennedy told us she wasn't proud of her country. Let's see, when was that?....
  2. And, and -- I remember when Jackie Kennedy went on a vacation to Spain on Taxpayer's dime and booked 40 rooms at $2500 apiece for her entourage. I can't remember the exact date on that one, either.
  3. And remember when Michell's salary nearly tripled just after her husband became Senator and provided a grant to the hospital she worked at? Wasn't that just like Jackie, too? Too bad the $317,000 position wasn't important enough to retain after she quit.

Yes, overall -- Michelle is just as classy as Jackie Kennedy. NOT! This is just another "equivlancy" claim by the liberal left, who is assuming we're gonna swallow it hook, line, and sinker.

Trying Too Hard to Fit In!

Submitted by gruyere cheese on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 1:49pm.

I don't take away the fact that MO is an educated woman with some executive experience under her belt. However, she is now the First Lady of the US and such behave as such. It does not mean that you cannot hug, shake hands with foreign dignataries or even play with children during your overseas trip. As the first lady being photographed constantly, she is also promoting US culture. Most foreign countries follow a cultural protocol and as a guest, one has to follow.

Michelle & Obama have made may faux paus in their overseas travel, often overlooked and if not, praised by the American media. Don't they have a cultural secretary or anyone that advises them on what to wear and the proper protocol when you meet diplomats in their homeland?

We, Americans are very friendly and welcoming people, but sometimes our simplicity is viewed as ignorance in other countries. For that reason Ms. O could show more class during her trips overseas. Elegance and class are not dictated by what you wear, but rather "how you wear it". The comparison with Jackie O is simply without merit.

What do you mean by she's looking better and better? When did she ever look bad? Laura Bush is 15 years older than MO, so while first lady, she never dressed, or tried to dress "cool" or "hip" or "trendy". Laura Bush had a style that was very much her own...Mature, classic, and ladylike. I think Laura Bush was one of our prettier first ladies, and always dressed very appropriately and attractively.

While they gush and slobber

Submitted by Van Halen on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 2:09pm.

While they gush and slobber over ME-Chelle, remember what ME-Chelle is up to: This whole 'healthy foods' thing is a smokescreen for something sinister. This is how it works. Lib leaders and the local, state and federal level suddenly get a bee in their bonnet about all of us eating healthy (note that not ONE of them are eating healthy themselves). Then it goes to step two: 'alerting' the populace about the dangers of food or drink X. Then step three: Banning or heavily regulating food or drink X. Then step four: moving to the next food or drink X. Ultimately, after enough foods have been banned or heavily regulated, the government simply steps in and takes control of the growing, storage, distribution and finally the serving of most, if not all food. Once under government control, those workers in the food industry become government workers and voila! The Ace in the Hole is played - Unionization under SEIU. Now, a portion of all contracts and paychecks go to SEIU and hence, Democrat coffers. And the best part is, only the rich are allowed to eat whatever they want while the rest of us are stuck with horrid tasting healthy snacks and meals.

What they have in common is

Submitted by buddyc on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 6:04pm.

What they have in common is they were both married to losers.  As for their looks it is an insult to compare Michelle to Jackie.

FIRST LADY:  Is Mass out?

PARISHIONER:  Ye-e-e-es, ma'am.  But don't worry.  Your arms look toned, and it all looks great.

Now that schools are no longer allowing birthday treats because of the high sugar content, I think the Feds need to halt Shipman from spewing this nonsense on ABC.  I feel a sugar rush coming on...

Gushing over Michelle

Submitted by NotFondOfLibs on Wed, 11/10/2010 - 7:14pm.

With people like Claire Shipman and Caty Couric just to name a couple, gushing constantly over the Obamas, it is no surprise that  viewership on evening news broadcasts is dropping.  After hearing Michelle Obama announce that she was finally proud of her country, I decided the less I heard about this woman, the better.  Michelle Obama would do well to take care of her own weight and not lecture Americans about what they should or should not be eating.  It's none of her business.
