MSNBC Regular Donny Deutsch Slams Marco Rubio With Racially Charged Attack: He's a 'Coconut'

MSNBC and CNBC contributor -- and professed Charlie Crist admirer -- Donny Deutsch used racially charged language on Monday night, smearing Republican senatorial candidate Marco Rubio as a "coconut." Deutsch appeared on HLN's Joy Behar Show and used the word, which both the New York Times and Urban Dictionary define as a "person who is tan on the outside" and "white on the inside." Rubio is the son of Cuban exiles. [Audio available here.]

Deutsch employed the derogatory term while hitting politicians with no experience. He noted the success of such candidates and derided, "...You almost need that blank piece of paper. That's the new model. Like, you know, this coconut Rubio down in Florida."

UPDATE: 2010-02-23 18:20 Deutsch responded on his Twitter page: "I said 'coconut' meaning simple, goofy, bananas...wasn't even aware it could be a racially charged word."

The word has previously inflamed racial tensions. The New York Times reported on October 3, 1996 that Democratic House candidate Victor Morales called a Republican Congressman who endorsed his opponent a "coconut" and was forced to apologize:

But some editorial writers and political operatives feel Mr. Morales may have gone too far last week when he accused Representative Henry Bonilla, the only Hispanic Republican in the Texas delegation and a Gramm supporter, of being a ''coconut.'' The term is used to depict a person as being brown on the outside and white on the inside.
Mr. Morales later apologized. ''In the heat of a deeply felt disagreement, I used terms I should not have used,'' he said.

Ironically, just seconds after calling Rubio a coconut, Deutsch lashed out against tea partiers, slamming them as racist: "No, they're angry- they're basically- their argument is- and I think there's a lot of racism underneath it- is- 'He, they, are taking your civil liberties away. They're stomping on the Constitution. They're telling us how many bullets we can have in our guns.'"

Deutsch regularly appears on CNBC and MSNBC's Morning Joe. Will those networks call on him to apologize? Will they distance themselves from such language?

A partial transcript of the segment, which aired at 9:19pm on February 22 at 9:19pm EST:

JOY BEHAR: Let's talk about the Republican Party. They're becoming- You're a brander. You know about that. They are the party of no. And that's not a good thing.
DONNY DEUTSCH: It's not a good thing. But what they figured out, finally, unfortunately, in the last six weeks, if you think about Brown winning, if you think about in Virginia where they won, if you think about this guy Rubio they're pushing in Florida, they're understanding that just this vitriolic, "We hate Obama. The world is bad," the Sarah Palins of the world, the Dick Cheneys of the world, the Rush Limbaughs, is unelectable. Let's put forward a fiscal conservative, socially- what appears to be socially moderate in terms of whatnot [sic], that's the electable candidate. So they're getting it. There's a difference between-
BEHAR: Who is that person?
DEUTSCH: It's basically it's a Scott Brown. And once again. It's amazing. They're talking about presidential timber. He's never done anything in his whole life. That's the whole thing. It's the blank piece of paper people can assign things to. One of the reasons, interestingly enough, I think we are a society of no right now. One of the reasons Obama got elected, because he was a blank page. You could assign hope to him.
BEHAR: That's true.
DEUTSCH: We're such a media frenzy, 24/7 world that almost anybody that's been around too long, there's so much "no" attached to it, that you almost need that blank piece of paper. That's the new model. Like, you know, this coconut Rubio down in Florida. You know-
BEHAR: What's his name? I don't know him. Rubio?
DEUTSCH: Marco Rubio. He's running against Charlie Crist, who I think has done a great job. And he is the new great, you now, hope down there.
BEHAR: So, basically, these people, the tea partiers are basically angry with the right and the left for the same reason, that there's fiscal irresponsibility?
DEUTSCH: No, they're angry- they're basically- their argument is- and I think there's a lot of racism underneath it- is- "He, they, are taking your civil liberties away. They're stomping on the Constitution. They're telling us how many bullets we can have in our guns."

I could not believe it and of course Behar said nothing.

I've seen his act before and all I can say is "He is living proof that anyone can be a success in America.

Marco Rubio was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000 (that's ten years for you Donny, since you're factually challenged). He was the youngest Speaker of the House ever elected in Florida. How does that stack up to your no-experience messiah, Donny? You know, the Vain Obama.

I had a woman of Puerto Rican extraction who worked for me....when she'd get really frustrated and angry, she'd call someone "a pineapple". It used to make me laugh, because she'd say it with a New Yawk accent. But I never bothered to ask her what it meant, since it was so obviously a term of derision. Well, I've never heard the term used in that manner, and didn't know it had any kind of connotation. Without reading the explanation, the video wouldn't have seemed unordinary to me and I would've assumed he meant "crazy". But, Joy's 'huh, who?' moment seemed to be a purposeful attempt to deflect attention from the description to the name, meaning she probably picked up on it right away. If that's the case, then she's equally complicit for not calling him on it. Of course, she's got plausible deniability.

With all of the trouble Crist has -his own staff is jumping ship- maybe he can get an endorsement from Deutsch. That'll help.

We've decided to call a POS a "Kiffen".....he's a young punk football coach who sandbagged one of the SEC Schools....accepted their $4 million a year, only to defect back to California after one (awful) season, leaving Tennessee in a super hole...because all of the "good" coaches had been hired.

As long as you call a sufficient number white conservatives "racist" on a regular basis, you're pretty much innoculated from being called a racist yourself. I see a difference in your example and what Deutsch did grammatically speaking. Deutsch called Rubio "a coconut" which if we were to use your analogy with the same grammar it would be calling Kim Jong Il "a banana" which grammatically is quite different. The more common use of coconut in regards to craziness is "going coconuts" just as "going bananas." Although "going coconuts" is more archaic. So I see a definite problem and double standard with Deutsch use of "a coconut" and his subsequent excuse doesn't really hold water.

This reminds me of a parable, maybe I am a dreamer of dreams but with this, we all ought to learn a lesson. There once was a man who had a stately house on a hill. All of the wretched townsfolk despised this man, not for being miserly or unkind for he was quite generous with his bounty. No they despised him for his success. One day the man came home from being at the market. Amber flames flew through the air with such force and passion; he looked up, his house was falling down. He asked the townsfolk for assistance in putting out the flames, but they rebuked him and went on their way. Soon though the flames became more violent and underbrush caught alight. Without warning or notice the howling wind picked up the fire and it began to spread throughout the town; engulfing the homes of the townspeople who laughed and mocked the man for his absent mindedness. In the end the town was destroyed. Not one house was left from that baptism of fire!

A friend used to live at Carolina Beach (the year that three hurricanes, including Fran, came ashore at Wilmington). Used visit and vacation at Wrightsville Beach, Wilmington, Carolina and Kure Beaches. The point is that there was a recent newsbusters blog entry about Rush being on a list of conservative journalists. Noel Sheppard took offense that Rush wasn't listed number one on the list. Of course, Rush isn't a journalist, and putting him on a list of journalists doesn't make him one, just as putting Hispanic as a race on the census doesn't make it one. That's the point.

First of all, watching the video, you can tell both both Behar and Deutsch realize he'd f'd up as soon as he said it.

Secondly, Deutsch's excuse (made well after this thing had gone viral on the web) that he only meant "goofy/crazy" doesn't jibe with anything else Deutsch said about Rubio. It wasn't like Deutsch was going on about Rubio's extreme positions or wacky behavior leading up to calling him a coconut. And he didn't imply it afterwords. Called him "this coconut down in Florida", then says Rubio is the "new great hope down there". Period. i.e., Deutsch didn't make any remark remotely related to Rubio being off-kilter.

Gee. Why would Deutsch call Rubio "crazy", for example, out of the blue, without any further explanation? Answer: He wouldn't. And didn't. He didn't mean "crazy", or "wacky" or "goofy". He meant something entirely different. He'd either been saying it a lot or hearing it a lot from his liberal pals in reference to Rubio and it slipped out on air.

Deutsch's excuse is laughable.
