Absurd Denial: WaPo Claims ‘Goal’ of GOP Attack Pieces Wasn't to Help Dem Nominee

A Washington Post staff writer on Wednesday swore that it wasn’t the "goal" of the newspaper to elect Virginia’s Democratic candidate for governor, despite the paper’s wave of attack coverage against the Republican nominee. Participating in a chat on WashingtonPost.com, Amy Gardner did admit that there’s an "argument to be made" over whether the paper did some "‘prolonged’ reporting" on Republican Bob McDonnell’s 1989 college thesis about marriage and the family.

Gardner, who wrote many of the articles on the 20-year-old thesis about feminism and working women, avowed that the subject was a "legitimate news story that then took on a life of its own and that we continued to cover." Took on a life of its own? In the first 12 days after the story broke, the paper published 11 articles on the subject. Wouldn’t something with a "life of its own" have developed naturally without the aggressive help of the Post?

Gardner was responding to a reader question over whether the news outlet’s extensive coverage actually harmed Democrat Creigh Deeds. She retorted, "Well, certainly there's an argument to be made that we did some ‘prolonged’ reporting on the thesis, but it wasn't with the goal of helping Deeds."

The Washington Post, which has been running stories friendly to Deeds since breaking the thesis story on August 30, endorsed the Democrat on October 25. (The newspaper also supported Deeds in the primaries, giving him a big boost.)

Another person participating in the chat wondered if the Democrat has mentioned that Daniel Snyder donated to McDonnell’s campaign. (Snyder is the unpopular and, thus far, unsuccessful owner of the perpetually struggling Washington Redskin, a football team that has a strong following in Northern Virginia.)

Staff writer Rosalind Helderman, who has also written articles about McDonnell and his thesis, enthused, "I believe we've mentioned it a few times in print. I haven't heard yet from Deeds on the donation, but maybe it'd be a smart strategy for him to start talking about it!"

The entire chat can be found here.

The thesis and Redskin questions are below:

Richmond, Va.: Did your prolonged reporting on McDonnell's thesis actually harm Deeds as today's PPP results -- even though you don't like their methodology -- say people have been turned off by the constant harping on it?

Amy Gardner: Well, certainly there's an argument to be made that we did some "prolonged" reporting on the thesis, but it wasn't with the goal of helping Deeds. It was a legitimate news story that then took on a life of its own and that we continued to cover. Also, as much as I'd like to think otherwise, most of those polled are not reading The Washington Post. They're seeing Deeds's ads, which focused heavily on the thesis for many weeks. Voter turn-off in that instance is directed at Deeds, I think.

...

New York: Has Deeds mentioned that McDonnell has received a $50,000 contribution from Dan Snyder, possibly the most detested person in the Washington area? I would think McDonnell would want to keep that quiet.

Rosalind Helderman: The donation popped up in the McDonnell's most recent fundraiser report. I believe we've mentioned it a few times in print. I haven't heard yet from Deeds on the donation, but maybe it'd be a smart strategy for him to start talking about it!

"Funny"

This is very funny.

Yes, we spread the gasoline, lit the match but then the fire just took on a life of its own.

The sad part is "they really believe it"!!

I dont think...

..the Pocket Poodle Media really even think about truth before opening their corrupt mouths, I dont think they care a whit about anything a decent human being would define as virtue for that matter, they consider those things outdated.

I think they simply say whatever suits the situation and helps them steer the conversation to their side. If she was talking to a leftist group she would have crowed and preened over her hit piece and basked in the applause instead of denying any "wrong" doing.

The media is infested with leftists and they are liars and scoundrels for the most part, ABC/NBC/CBS/MSNBC need to fumigated, but who's going to call the fumigator when the lice are running the operation.

How many McDonnell macaca

How many McDonnell macaca moments did the WaPo announce?

The life of a story is dictated by the teller of the story

"It was a legitimate news story that then took on a life of its own and that we continued to cover."

Classic example of journalist rhetoric. News stories don't have lives of their own. They continue only because reporters continue to cover them. It may well be that McDonnell's thesis was a legitimate story ... the first time it was reported. It expanded into an 11-part series, however, without any new revelations. The story didn't develop because of new reporting of new facts; that would(might) have justified the continued reporting. But as I understand it, nothing (or little) was revealed in the subsequent articles.

What happened was that the Post decided that the reaction to the article was itself a story. But the source of that reaction was entirely from McDonnell's partisan opponents. In essence, the Washington Post exploited the first story to promote (and advance) the partisan campaign against McDonnell.

As Chad Ochocinco would say to her: "Child Please!"

Michelle's "Thesis"

Why haven't we seen the same reporting on Michelle Obama's anti-white rant, otherwise known as her "thesis" from years ago. Don't hold your breath for that one. Hypocrites and liars -- just two of the many ways to describe modern "liberal" "jounalists". Sad.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

I don't consider the WaPo a

I don't consider the WaPo a "news" organization.

An amazing dive

The MSM journalists have taken an amazing dive, and are now lower than whale sh*t at the deepest darkest bottom of the ocean.  Lower even than attorneys were at their nadir.

WaPo is a joke

Yeah.  I'm still waiting to read anything that the great Obama wrote while in law school -- you'd figure that the President of the Harvard Law Review would have written at least a student note that would have been released.  In fact, the only academic writing I have read by the President was a law school exam he wrote for a ConLaw class at U. of Chicago, and which, by the way, had little to do with constitutional law, but I guess that the dormant interstate commerce clause isn't as sexy as Alinsky indoctrination.

So come on, WaPo, let's see some of the smartest president in history's own academic writing.

Matters not to WaPo of the

Matters not to WaPo of the NYTs, others as well, they can lie until they turn blue...

Agenda, agenda, agenda...that is all that matters to these leftists who want to retain power for their favorite tool...heck they all work together....one needs the other the same.

Sickening. Destructive.

Sad ....sad for this country.

Lying about lying

It is an inconvenient fact that the Liberal media is biased – by now that is about as irrefutable as the Pope being a Catholic.  Of course, when confronted by this fact the Liberal Media has to either lie about it or admit and advertise that they are untrustworthy.  It is hardly surprising that they invariable choose to lie about it; doing so is closely related to what the Liberals Media do best and most often: mislead about and distort the news, which is essentially a form of lying.

- Relying upon the State Run Media for your information is like relying upon an embezzler for your portfolio management.

- I didn't leave the Republican Party; the Republican Party left me.

The Compost

The compost realizes it lost and that its influance is not as good or as strong as it used to be, this is just their CYA report.

I have live in Washington for 20 years and the Compost is only good for coupons, fish rap and birdcages.

Not true John

John,

I can personally vouch for the fact that, besides coupons, fish wrap, and birdcages, the Post can be used to start fires in your fireplace and, if you crumple it up, can be used for package padding if you are moving.

The Washington Post- Corruption at it's worst. No one reads that crappy newspaper, anymore.

I dont read the WaPo but

Campaign attack ads against McDonnell have been unrelenting accusing him of being this mysogynist because of a thesis he wrote 20 years ago. Attack, Attack and attack again that is the Dem way. The truth doesn't matter only emotion and perception. However he has led in the polls from day one. Any ad where his opponent actually speaks (apparently without a teleprompter) gives the impression that Deeds is a fumbler, bumbler. McDonnell has countered with several very good ads one an endorsement by his daughter who she claims (I am sure true but not documented by me) that she is an Army Iraq vet with the rank of Lieutant. This was a good counter to the mysogynist, dinosaur theme. And so it goes.
